For years, Keenan Tamblyn has wanted to know about his mother's dreams of being a musician. When Megan Banning was younger she recorded music that never saw the light of day. With the help of an American podcast and Halifax musician Rich Aucoin that's changed - and now k.d. lang wants to hear the songs! Hear why as the CBC's Carsten Knox brings us the story.
Send us a textWe're joined by indie music star and film geek Rich Aucoin to talk the controversial JOKER: FOLIE A DEUX. And ONE OF US loves it! Is the movie a $200-million troll act, and is that ok? Plus, some of our favourite movie controversies.
On this week's podcast, Kyle Semmel—translator from the Danish and author of Book of Losman—discusses his debut novel, life as a translator, articles he wrote on Tourette's Syndrome and Author-Transaltors, how he tried to promote his book with Justin Murphy (Your Children Are Very Greatly in Danger) and Chad W. Post. The music on this episode is "Wav" by Rich Aucoin. (Would've chosen a Bob Dylan song in Kyle's honor, but not after he told me how much Dylan's people wanted to charge him for using a line or two as an epigraph. I can not afford a lawsuit.) If you don't already subscribe to the Three Percent Podcast you can find us on iTunes, Spotify, and other places.

Rich Aucoin is a Halifax-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, and actor. His live shows are legendary as being multi-media dance and sing-along extravaganzas, and he's well-loved for his ability to connect with his audience in ways that create a feeling of community and also mutual trust and respect. Rich's most recent project is an ambitious undertaking of massive scope: a quadruple album entitled Synthetic: A Synth Odyssey. It is being released over 2 years. Synthetic Season 1 (2022) was recently awarded "Electronic Recording of the Year" at the East Coast Music Awards (ECMAs). The album employs 37 synths (all played by Rich), many of them legendary vintage instruments made famous by people such as Brian de Palma and Stevie Wonder. Rich is currently on tour for the release of Synthetic, Season 2. For more information on Rich and his amazing adventures, go to richaucoin.ca. This week, Brian, Chad, and Kaija discuss the first half of Passages, arguable Quin's most poetic book, and definitely most experimental one to date. They talk about the way the two characters try to define themselves and create their identities, flow versus points, geometry and parallax, masks and threesomes, and more. It's a dense—yet fun—episode, much in keeping with the text itself! This week's music is "Future" by Rich Aucoin. You can watch next week's discussion of Passage live on YouTube. (Reading schedule can be found here.) And you can find all previous seasons of TMR on our YouTube channel. In 1994, Elizabeth Murphy, Patrick Christopher Carter, and Jean Morpurgo staged a now-legendary, free production of Twelfth Night in Point Pleasant Park. On that summer weekend, Shakespeare By The Sea was born, anchoring every summer in Halifax with a slate of Shakespeare and a company-created family show. As its 28th season dawns, Murphy—the surviving co-founder who's been running the company with Jesse MacLean—has decided to step away from SBTS. Her retirement tour stops by the show this week for a deep dive into the company's history, challenges—hurricanes! fires! beetles!—its legacy in the theatre community, and her next act. Plus a new song from Rich Aucoin.
Welp... The psychopath of the group is the first one to contract COVID. And the narcissist is convinced he's immune. This week we had to forego our FGF recording because Bri Guy is down and out. But fear not. We're going back in time (to March 13th, 2020 to be exact) to relive the moments where sh*t began hitting the fan. Before we truly knew what we were in for. It's the end of the world as we know it. Or is it? Do we even have the rights to use that song? Anyway, Jeremie, Brian and Lauren talk COVID-19. From underestimating the effect this may have on the immunosuppressed to overstocking on toilet paper, the gang gives you an update on this rapidly evolving situation. The bottom line — it'll be ok (boomer). Take care of yourself and the ones you love by taking precautions, using a bidet and listening to our friend Rich Aucoin's Feel Good Playlist For Anxious Times. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0CibVbewQMQvS92XYXyUss *Join the post-episode conversation over on Discord! https://discord.gg/expeUDN

This week on the Richard Crouse Show Podcast: Chart topping songs like "Why Does It Always Rain on Me?" and "Coming Around" and albums like album, "The Man Who," which spent nine weeks at number one on the UK Albums Chart, made Scottish rock legends Travis one of the most interesting bands of the last few decades. They are back with an emotionally charged & deeply heartfelt ninth studio album simply called "10 Songs." it’s a record about life’s challenges and how love can help weather those trials and tribulations. Joining me today is Travis lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Fran Healy on Skype. He’s been called one of the UK’s finest songwriting exports. Then "Aladdin" star Mena Mossaud stops by to chat up hius new book "Evolving Vegan." Finally, Halifax-based Rich Aucoin’s fourth studio album, “United States,” is available now wherever you legally buy or download music on sites like bandcamp. He has been long-listed for the Polaris Music Prize twice and has built a reputation for putting on some of best live shows in Canada. So that’s where we began… by talking about the lack of live music in our lives right now.
Things shift in Ada, or Ardor this week, with Van's second trip to Ardis being much darker, much more perverse and troubling than the first, "more innocent" summer with Ada. There's also another couple hints about Terra, and the possiblity of Ada having another lover . . . And, as is par for the course, some amazing writing from Nabokov. This week's music is "Reset" by Rich Aucoin, another protest anthem of sorts from his new America album. (With another great, powerful video.) Another week of the Canucks scoring a lot of goals, all while Milan Lucic makes a name for himself for all the wrong reasons. P Mac, Ryan and a returning Geeta gather this week to discuss an impressive week for the Vancouver Canucks. Production from all four lines but injuries slowly begin to mount. Can the Canucks weather the storm and continue to compete in a rather injured western conference? Dave skypes in from Ottawa to talk about Milan Lucic who's about to serve a two game suspension for a random act of violence on Kole Sherwood. Lucic's skill and abilities are declining at a rapid rate, is there still a spot in the game for a player like Lucic? Or has it completely passed him by? They discuss which coach will be fired first. Which 'win now' team is running out of patience? There's several candidates who are on the hot seat right now to say the least. The gang also talks about the surprising Arizona Coyotes, Jason Spezza's treatment in Toronto and answer some great listener questions. Support the show on Patreon! Rich Aucoin joins us to talk about his triumphant year in 2011, headlining the Pop Explosion and releasing his long-awaited album. Arts editor Stephanie Johns is also here with stories of outrage from The Coast printing a swear word on its cover. It's pretty fucked up. All this plus the city hits peak scandal. This is a good one, folks! The Coast presents: 25 for 25. A year-by-year audio archive. This is VOICES, Stories of Change – a series of podcasts and interviews from Engage nova Scotia. Fusion Halifax is a network of young professionals committed to fostering opportunities for connection, professional and community development. On May 18th the group hosted a full house audience for a panel discussion dubbed “How Do I Stay?”. What follows is an unedited recording from the event. The event brought together 3 young professionals who shared their experiences living, making a living and choosing to remain living in the city, and the province. While rural communities sometimes experience more severe or visible signs of out-migration of youth, cities like Halifax also wrestle with the evolving expectations, ambitions and conditions that attract and root young professionals to their home of choice. Sharing stories like those featured on this panel will continue to be part of the VOICES series as Engage seeks to highlight the emerging new narrative of a changing Nova Scotia. The first voice you’ll hear is Ali Breen of Fusion, the panel facilitator. You can learn more about Fusion at fusionhalifax.ca As you will hear, even on a small panel of three, experiences vary greatly and advice from young Nova Scotians who choose to live and stay in the province is broad and varied. Throughout Nova Scotia you’ll find – if you look – people like Rob Carver using the resources around them, their imagination and passion to bring communities together. On a particularly gorgeous, sunny and warm spring day earlier this month I met Rob at his family home on a hill overlooking the ocean to hear about the Lost Shores Grand Fondo, a cycling event in the Italian Tradition. A Big Ride he dreamt up that attracted almost 300 cyclists to the area last fall. With more than 100 volunteers, bbq’ed ribs, local beer, music, and the support of the municipality, Rob’s created a unique draw for Guysborough. One that promises to grow in it’s second year this fall. Learn more about Guysborough’s Lost Shores Grand Fondo at lostshoresgranfondo.ca The event will take place September 9th. Registration is now open. Though he's already amassed over 50 million plays for his remixes and original material, Grandtheft opens up about his first "formal" collection, the Quit This City EP. We also speak with Zach from Vancouver indie pop outfit The Zolas about the band's latest release, Wino Oracle" - a teaser EP featuring three tracks from their upcoming full-length. mFinally, we speak with Jason Burns, the founder of Burnt Tree management who, along with clients including Hey Rosetta!, Rich Aucoin, and Plants & Animals, has just joined Arts & Crafts' management division.
Rich Aucoin made his latest record Ephemeral to sync up with the the 1979 claymation film version of The Little Prince (or Le Petit Prince if you are francophone). Rich also does a really great job of creating a unique experience during his live shows. He describes his show as “screaming along with your friends to songs you don't know” or “group karaoke.” Getting Rich Aucoin to talk about any of these interesting things is …challenging. Am I up to the challenge? You'll have to listen to our chat! Tracks played on the show... 1) Rich Aucoin, Ephemeral (2014) “Want to Believe” 2) Rich Aucoin, Ephemeral (2014) “Are You Experiencing?” 3) Rich Aucoin, Ephemeral (2014) “Want to Believe” (partial/background) 4) Rich Aucoin, We're All Dying to Live (2011) “Hope For the Flowers” 5) Rich Aucoin, Ephemeral (2014) “Let It Go” ALL songs CANCON
When I sat down with Canada's resident electronic party-maker Rich Aucoin backstage at Vancouver's Media Club, he told me he'd just been to the University of British Columbia's Museum of Anthropology. “I just like to keep learning,” he told me. In fact, Rich visits the big museums in every city he hits while on tour. As I watched Rich set up his trademark parachute for his show, my mind was flooded with questions. Does he really give out his cell number to the audience at the end of each show? Did 500 musicians really work on his record? How did he end up as Girl Talk‘s hype man one night? His music is so uplifting, does he in fact bleed rainbows? I get to the bottom of everything! Tracks played on this show... 1) Rich Aucoin, We're All Dying to Live "Brian Wilson is A.L.i.V.E." 2) Rich Aucoin, We're All Dying to Live "P.U.S.H." 3) Rich Aucoin, We're All Dying to Live "It" 4) Rich Aucoin, We're All Dying to Live "Living to Die" 5) Rich Aucoin, We're All Dying to Live "Dying to Live" (partial) ALL songs CANCON
