New year, new book, same old Cersei (pretending to be #New for the High Septon). Margo helps us retrace the steps of Cersei's life and unpack the complexities of her familial and romantic relationships (which are kind of one and the same at times). Where to find Margo https://x.com/King_Margosha https://bsky.app/profile/kingcersei.bsky.social References from Lo Essay: A MOST UNCOMMON WOMAN: Cersei Lannister's Gender Trouble Essay: Maidens, maidenheads, and the patriarchy- Virginity norms in ASOIAF Lo and Virginie's podcast, Ragman's Harbour Mentioned Quotes Susan Stryker definition: "I use [transgender] in this book to refer to people who move away from the gender they were assigned at birth, people who cross (trans-) the boundaries constructed by their culture to define and contain that gender. Some people move away from their birth-assigned gender because they feel strongly that they properly belong to another gender in which it would be better for them to live; others want to strike out toward some new location, some space not yet clearly defined or concretely occupied; still others simply feel the need to get away from the conventional expectations bound up with the gender that was initially put upon them. In any case, it is the movement across a socially imposed boundary away from an unchosen starting place- rather than any particular destination or mode of transition- that best characterizes the concept of ‘transgender' that I want to develop here." From Leslie Feinberg's Transgender Warriors: “Didn't Joan of Arc wear men's clothes?” I asked a friend over coffee in 1975. She had a graduate degree in history; I had barely squeaked through high school. I waited for her answer with great anticipation, but she dismissed my question with a wave of her hand. ”It was just armor.” She seemed so sure, but I couldn't let my question go. Joan of Arc was the only person associated with cross-dressing in history I'd grown up hearing about. I thought a great deal about my friend's answer. Was the story of Joan of Arc dressing in men's clothing merely legend? Was wearing armor significant? If a society strictly mandates only men can be warriors, isn't a woman military leader dressed in armor an example of cross-gendered expression?" ibid. : "No wonder you've passed as a man! This is such an anti-woman society,” a lesbian friend told me. To her, females passing as males are simply trying to escape women's oppression – period. She believes that once true equality is achieved in society, humankind will be genderless. I don't have a crystal ball, so I can't predict human behavior in a distant future. But I know what she's thinking – if we can build a more just society, people like me will cease to exist. She assumes that I am simply a product of oppression. Gee, thanks so much." From Alica Spencer-Hall and Spencer Gutt's Trans and Genderqueer Subjects in Medieval Hagiography: "Marginalised identities are often written out of the historical record by those with the privilege of formulating “historical truth”. The Middle Ages is frequently viewed as a time “where men were men, women were women, everyone was the same race and practised the same faith, and no one was corrupted by technology, sexuality or democracy”. This is not how any medievalist worth their salt would put it. Disingenuous interrogation of the presence of trans people in history is rarely about the factual specifics of the past alone. If talking about trans lives is “anachronistic”, then “trans-ness [is] not an inextricable part of humanity or human diversity”. The transphobe's dream is an imaginary medieval past in which everyone knows their (gendered) place. Similar themes emerge in the usage of the Middle Ages by the alt-right and beyond: those who fantasize a past in which everyone who mattered was straight, cisgender, white, and Christian. White supremacists and fascists weaponize the Middle Ages to justify their hatred. ------ Eliana's twitter: https://twitter.com/arhythmetric Eliana's reddit account: https://www.reddit.com/user/glass_table_girl Eliana's blog: https://themanyfacedblog.wordpress.com/ Chloe's twitter: https://twitter.com/liesandarbor Chloe's blog: liesandarborgold.com Intro by Anton Langhage

Send us a textCersei learns that Dragonstone has fallen but that Loras has paid with his life - or at least he lies at death's door. She delights in sharing this news with Margaery - who is stricken, but remains hopeful. Cersei dreams of her childhood run-in with Maggy the Frog and the details of the woman's terrifying prophecy. Simon and Mackelly probably should have seen this coming.Chapter Review:Queen Cersei Lannister learns from Aurane Waters that Dragonstone has fallen but that Loras led the assault to his doom. He was grievously wounded multiple times and lies unconscious beyond the skill of any maester to heal. Cersei is delighted. She carefully hides this as she shares the news with Margaery. The young queen is devastated, but latches on to the fact that Loras still lives and seems determined to seek to revive him.More non-Tyrion dwarf's heads are placed before her. The High Septon sends an emissary rather than himself to Cersei's annoyance. The faith is trying to shut down the brothels on the Street of Silk also to Cersei's, and every sailor's, annoyance. Grand Maester Pycelle reports that Lord Gyles Rosby seems to be dying. She dreams of her meeting with Maggy the Frog, the details of whose prophecy continue to come true (she did marry the king, she did become queen), which wouldn't be a problem but the prophecy turns a lot darker after that: she'll be replaced by a younger more beautiful queen, her three children will die, and the valonqar will choke the life from Cersei. Send us a textCersei gets an update on Margaery court, while being waylaid by sparrows. She negotiates a deal with the new High Septon. He'll bless Tommen and erase the crown's debt to the Faith for a law allowing the re-emergence of the Faith Militant. Finally, she makes a veiled threat to Margaery. Mackelly and Simon bow their heads in prayer that she knows what she's doing.Chapter Review:Queen Cersei Lannister rides to the Great Sept of Baelor with Taena Maryweather. Taena fills Cersei in on the men in Margaery's court. The list is filled with most of the young, handsome knights in King's Landing. Therefore, the addition of Grand Maester Pycelle stands out. The going is slow. The litter is blocked by sparrows clogging the streets. Ultimately, Cersei walks the remainder of the way. Upon seeing a pile of bones of slain faithful, Cersei promises to seek revenge. However, the sparrows want only protection for the living.Inside the sept, Cersei is shocked to see septons on hands and knees scrubbing. When she meets the High Septon, she says he should have met her in his finest robes and a crystal crown, not wet and dirty. He explains that they've sold their crowns and fine robes. Cersei asks to speak in private. They kneel at the feet of the Crone. Cersei wants the sparrows gone from King's Landing and a blessing from the High Septon for King Tommen. The High Septon wants better protection from the king for the faithful throughout the realm. Cersei suggests they protect themselves, but a law prohibits the faith from taking up arms. She offers to abolish the law for a blessing for the king and forgiveness on the crown's debt to the faith. The High Septon agrees. On the ride back to the Red Keep, Cersei's festive mood is killed by the sight of Queen Margaery and her court. The two queens exchange pleasantries and barbs. When Cersei sees Margaery and Loras together, it reminds her of Jaime and herself. An idea takes root and laughter bursts forth. Cersei meets with her new handpicked Small Council who blithely make momentous decisions with huge ramifications. Simon and Mackelly watch on in despair.Chapter Review:Queen Cersei is, not for the first time, disappointed to find the severed head of the wrong dwarf presented to her. She offers no punishment to the murderers for fear of deterring those hunting Tyrion. She and Qyburn head to the Small Council. He has prepared the skull to be sent to Dorne to satisfy the Martell's grievance against the now, presumably dead, Gregor Clegane. The Small Council is at full complement - with men Cersei has personally elevated not because of obvious talents for their positions, but due to perceived loyalty. It doesn't make for a very thoughtful meeting. They decide to stay out of the trouble in the Vale, but demand that no harm befall Petyr Baelish. That they'll ignore the flock of Sparrows that continues to descend on King's Landing. That they have no idea who the next High Septon will be. That the grumblings from the masses about the crimes of the Red Wedding are best dealt with by waiting for Lord Frey to die and hoping that his successor will give up a few rivals as scapegoats. That to pay for a new royal fleet the crown will default on its loan payments to both the Faith and the Iron Bank of Braavos. That Lord Manderly should execute Ser Davos who came to ask for White Harbor's support for Stannis' claim. That news of dragons in Essos can be safely ignored. And that Jon Snow has betrayed the neutrality of the Night's Watch by siding with Stannis.Cersei arranges a complex plan involving Osney Kettleblack seducing Queen Margaery, being caught in the act, sent to the Wall by King Tommen, murdering Jon Snow, being pardoned, and then becoming Cersei's concubine for his service. A tall order, but if he pulls it off, then a Lannister always pays their debts. She tells Taena to let Margaery know that the handsome Osney is smitten with her, but discreetly.  Characters/Places/Names/Events:Cersei Lannister - Mother to King Tommen, Queen Regent of the Seven Kingdoms.King Tommen Baratheon - Child king of the Seven Kingdoms.Jamie Lannister - Twin and lover to Cersei. Myrcella sets sail for Dorne, via Braavos. Riding back through the city a riot breaks out. Lives are lost, but thanks to the Hound not Sansa Stark's. Jacelyn Bywater informs Tyrion that the smallfolk consider Tyrion the root of all their problems. With Bronn and Varys, Tyrion begins to consider replacing Joffrey with Tommen. Simon and Mackelly weigh the options. Chapter Review: Myrcella Baratheon is shipping off to Dorne where, when older, she will marry Trystane Martell. She's going a circuitous route, which will significantly reduce King's Landing's already insufficient naval force, but Cersei wants her daughter safe. Ser Arys Oakheart of the Kingsguard will travel with her as her personal bodyguard. Her arrival in Braavos is the signal for the Martells to move into the passes that border the Stormlands with the intent of holding some of Stannis' forces from the envisioned assault on King's Landing. The royal party heads back through the streets, lined with hangry citizens. The king is struck in the face with excrement, and rather than hastening a retreat to the Red Keep, he stops to set his Hound on those he perceives to blame. A riot ensues. Several in the party lose their lives including the High Septon. But Sansa Stark, briefly lost, is saved by Sandor Clegane. Hours later, the gold cloaks have regained control of the city, but Bywater warns Tyrion that the situation worsens daily. The smallfolk believe their suffering began when Tyrion was named Hand of the King. Tyrion is hurt by the insinuation. Bronn notes that Tommen is a much nicer kid than Joffrey and Westeros would be so much nicer of a place if the younger brother was to somehow become the King. Tyrion cannot help but imagine the prospect. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Queen Cersei Lannister - Widow of King Robert Baratheon, twin sister of Ser Jamie Lannister. The Stranger has come in the year of 54 AC and the Fingers explore one of the biggest mysteries of Fire and Blood in Episode 092:  the death of Aerea.  We also lose another Queen, a High Septon, nearly a whole Queen’s court including her consort, oh and a Westhill...a what?  Also, laws are written, progresses taken, High Septons appointed, and peace largely maintained during the years of Jaehaerys' early rule. We only have 3 more episodes before capping off our coverage of Fire and Blood.  What SHALL we do next, who knows!  But if you want to drop us a line with a suggestion we can be found all over the place: wearedavosfingers@gmail.com, @davosfingers on twitter, you can find and follow us on Facebook, or our Tumblr site davosfingers.com.  You can also check us out on Patreon at patreon.com/davosfingers. Show Notes Episode 169: “Shame In Vain” This week Host Dave Bledsoe explores that nagging feeling of remorse he experiences waking up each morning to find himself still alive. On the show this week we explore the most useless approach for moderating behavior after the “Time Out”: Shame. Along the way we examine the history of shame and have a good long laugh at the name “Hester”! (Admit it, you are giggling now.) We take special care to demonstrate how hard it is to make a sociopath feel bad about something they did. (So, you're telling me ax murder is a BAD thing?) The we see how shame is weaponized by both sides of the political aisle. There is a LONG string of dick jokes which we are inordinately proud of, and a couple of pedo priest jokes that we know we know we SHOULD be ashamed of, yet totally are not. (See, shame is useless!) Finally, we offer up a simple suggestion on how to deal with the problems in our society. (Ahem: LOCK HIM UP! LOCK HIM UP! LOCK HIM UP!--damn that really is cathartic we see why they chanted it now.) Our sponsor this week is Catholic Guilt, the guilt that keeps on working long after you leave the church! We open the show with High Septon on redemption and close with The Computers who train us in vain. This Week on the Podcast: All of our hopes of a Jaime hostage situation are for naught. He made it back to his evil sister, fraught from watching his men die, and with dragon breath still in his hair. We all love to love Jaime, but he is an utter fool when it comes to Cersei. He is also terrified of her. We all should be. All is not a soul-crushing Lannister make-out session, we still get a (convenient) Tyrion and Jaime reunion. The two negotiated an armistice, because of course they did. Politically due North, Littlefinger is playing our darling Arya like a fiddle. It’s sad really. The Stark girls don’t understand how much their own house means to one another. If they did, their alliance could be ice solid. Except, they don’t know what we know. It’s maddening. What is also frustrating is how Samwell, our faithful informant at the Citadel, emotionally glazes over a High Septon’s diary entry about performing an annulment for Rhaegar, and marrying him to someone else at the same time in a secret ceremony in Dorne. You guys. This means Lyanna and Rhaegar were wed. Jon Snow is legitimate AF.

This week's episode of Game of Thrones was season 5's most action-packed installment yet, thanks to the rise of the Faith Militant and the growing threat of the Sons of the Harpy. Joining us in our in-depth discussion of the events that took place is We Got This Covered writer Sam Woolf, who has some of his own interesting theories and reactions to this week's shocking cliffhanger. In case you missed it, “Sons of the Harpy” ramped up the events in King's Landing when Cersei decided to arm the Faith Militant and name the High Sparrow the High Septon of the realm. She taunted Margery by having the Sparrows arrest Loras Tyrell for crimes against the gods and left the newly crowned King Tommen to pick up the pieces. While all hell broke loose in the capital, Jamie and Bronn landed in Dorne and continued their suicide rescue mission for Princess Myrcella. The Dornish storyline also brought us our first look at Oberyn's bastards, known as the Sand Snakes, and we try to decide if they live up to his legend. In northern Westeros, Jon Snow survived Melissandre's first seduction attempt while Stannis finally revealed the softer side of his hardened heart. He continues to be one of the most controversial characters on the show and we weigh in on the merit of his methods, intentions and recently discovered love for his daughter. Finally, we round out this week's exciting discussion by talking about the climactic skirmish between Greyworm, Barristan Selmy and a band of harpies that had us clamoring for more. Will Barristan pull out of the battle in one piece, or have we seen the last of the greatest living night in Westeros? Tune into the latest episode of The Cast Beyond The Wall to find out!   Subscribe on iTunes Follow us on Facebook Watch us on Youtube Don't miss all of the latest Game of Thrones updates at We Got This Covered
