The Final Draft podcast is all about books, writing and literary culture. We're dedicated to exploring Australian writing, looking into the issues that drive our storytelling to discover more from the books you love. These are the stories that make us who we are. Holly Throsby is novelist and musician and whether it's a three minute folk pop tune or three hundred page novel, she knows how to spin a yarn. Holly's novels Goodwood and Cedar Valley have been nominated for Ned Kelly, Davitt and Indie book awards and her new novel Clarke is destined to continue the tradition of exploring the warm welcomes, community and dark underbelly of 90's regional Australia.. In a nondescript street in Clarke, Barney Clarke (no relation) is woken by a knock on the door. A veritable platoon of police have arrived to execute a search warrant on his house and backyard. Next door Leonie observes the police's arrival, thinking to herself that they are six years too late to help her missing friend Ginny Lawson. From these simple but compelling beginnings Holly Throsby weaves a story of the lives, community and institutions we come to rely on, and how they too often fall short in protecting those most vulnerable. In a nondescript street in Clarke (a city since the seventies) Barney Clarke (no relation) is woken by a knock on the door. Clarke is told through the alternating stories of Leonie and Barney. As the police scour Barney's rental property for clues to the disappearance of Ginny, we learn that both Leonie and Barney have their own secrets. Six years earlier Leonie and Ginny were neighbors. Leonie struggled to manage the expectations of her aging mother and awaited the infrequent return of her older sister. Leonie and Ginny would talk over the fence but rarely visited each other. Ginny's husband wouldn't allow it; didn't think it was good for her. Lou was an upstanding member of the community. Successful businessman and member of the local hunting club. They were the picture of the perfect suburban family and everyone thought how devastating it must have been for Lou when one day Ginny simply disappeared. Across town Barney and Deb had their own picture of suburban idyll. Members of the hiking club and with their boy in high school, Deb and Barney formed the core of a large social circle. So how is it that now Barney still wears a ring but lives alone. Why does Leonie mother Joe and where did he come from? Clarke unfolds these stories with the question hanging over how we maintain the relationships that form our communities. Throsby shows us friendships hard won and worked on everyday and acquaintances that rely more on conjecture and hearsay. Into this space she leaves the fate of Ginny as open question; when nobody asks who will ever know the truth? I love Holly Throsby's novels for their mystery and for their warmth. Over three books she has crafted the wide expanse of the fictional Gather Region and populated it with people not dissimilar to ourselves. In holding up this mirror she is able to call into question the morals, the values, even the stories that seem fundamental to our sense of ourselves. Clarke's central mystery is not just ‘what really happened to Ginny Lawson' but how it was allowed to happen. An open secret. A culture of keeping up appearances is called into question and through Barney and Leonie we see a blossoming hope that we are more than the events of our past. I'm a fan of Clarke and I'd have to say that while the Jacarandas are still purple and the sun's not too hot, it's the perfect read for an afternoon sitting in the sun.
Myf and Zan are back and oh boy, there's a lot to catch up on. We've been glued to the telly with the Kath & Kim specials, news of Neighbours returning (what?), and the promise of even more White Lotus. The Macquarie Dictionary are offering up their contenders for word/phrase of the year and there are some Bang On classics in the mix. And speaking of Bachelor's Handbags, there's more bird talk this week. Maybe we should rebrand to Bird On? Dolly Parton has finally been inducted to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, and we look back at the road to this momentous moment. And the Paris Olympics have unveiled their 2024 mascots. Holly Throsby is one of my favourite people to chat with. As a prolific songwriter, she's put out five solo albums, as well as a kid's record and the Seeker Lover Keeper project; a collaboration with Sarah Blasko and Sally Seltmann. Over the years I've had the chance to sit down with Holly and talk music and writing many times, and she's forever inspiring in the way she sees, and then writes about the world around her. In the midst of making music a few years ago, the opportunity came up for Holly to write a novel, and she jumped at it. It was literally a dream come true to write long form, and what came out of that was Goodwood; her debut novel. It was critically acclaimed, and now she's just published book number two. With that in mind, I asked Holly to Take 5 with songs that set the scene. Music that evokes a story or paints a picture. She knocked it out of the park, and the way she speaks about music is as lyrical and beautiful as her song and story writing itself. Nina Simone - 'Feeling Good' Paul Simon - 'Graceland' Cat Power - 'Metal Heart' Joni Mitchell - 'Carey' Kate Bush - 'Wuthering Heights'

Holly Throsby has created 'Goodwood', a small town where it is impossible to keep a secret - so how and why did two people disappear? The summer season of Published or Not brings us a replay of 'The Serpent's Sting' by Robert Gott. A Scribe Publication.
Songwriter Holly Throsby has given us four albums exploring themes of darkness and wonder, a kids album, written and illustrated her own comics and can now add novelist to her list of achievements. And even though writing songs and books are different pursuits, there are similarities in the way the use of language can spark an emotional response and become part of the lexicon, something she came to appreciate through a stream of consciousness song by Scottish rock band Life Without Buildings.

Holly Throsby is a songwriter, musician and author. As an accomplished singer and songwriter, Holly has been performing since 2004, and has released five albums. In 2010, she joined forces with her friends Sarah Blasko and Sally Seltmann to form the indie pop group Seeker Lover Keeper, which released one album the following year. In 2016, she became an author: her first novel was published in September by Allen & Unwin. It's named Goodwood, and it's about what happens to a small town in New South Wales when two prominent members of the community go missing within a week of each other. The story is narrated by a 17 year-old named Jean Brown, and everything we see is filtered through the young narrator as she grapples with the dramatic turn of events. It's a combination of a mystery narrative and a portrait of a town experiencing a collective trauma. Goodwood offers a wonderfully lush and well-realised depiction of several aspects of contemporary Australian life, and it announces Holly as a major talent in fiction writing. I first met Holly in April 2013, when she invited me into her home in Sydney to talk about drug use for my book Talking Smack. In late September 2016, Holly's book was launched in Brisbane by previous Penmanship guest Kathleen Noonan at Avid Reader bookstore. The morning after, we met at an inner-city hotel room for a conversation which touches on her extensive research into the creative process as she began the book's first draft while pregnant with her daughter; why she likes the distance and anonymity that comes with writing fiction; how elements of the story and its characters draw on her upbringing in Sydney's inner west; how she snuck some of her favourite Australian expressions into the book's dialogue; what inspired her to record an album for children, and what led her to write an op-ed for The Sydney Morning Herald about same-sex marriage. Holly Throsby is a Sydney-based songwriter and musician. She has released four solo albums and a children’s album called See! She is known for summoning melodies that sound beautifully crumpled, worn and decades-old, and matching them with hushed, cutting lyrics that read like a Carver short story. Holly has been nominated for four ARIA Awards: two for Best Female Artist, one for Best Children’s Album, and one as part of Seeker Lover Keeper, her band with Sally Seltmann and Sarah Blasko. Goodwood is Holly's debut novel.
