Allan and Darren begin this episode by stepping back from a very busy first two months of foreign policy for the new government. If one were to build a model of the making of Australian foreign policy, what could we learn from from this particular case study and how would it stand out? Turning to events, the analysis begins with PM Albanese's trip to Europe for the NATO summit, then turns to the travels and speeches of FM Wong and DM Marles, including Wong's important meeting with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in Bali. Next they turn to the recent Pacific Islands Forum meeting in Suva and the withdrawal of Kiribati from the grouping, and finish with a discussion of the latest Lowy Institute Poll. Jessy took me on a journey into her life and how it all unfolded. She is a beautiful soul and everything she does her soul shines through. Jessica Chapnik Kahn shares how she immigrated to Australia as a child from Argentina. Growing up raised by Jewish Polish Catholic Italian Argentinian parents. How motherhood was like a welcoming home to this land in Australia. How she struggled with belonging and identity and how this shaped her driving force and the fire that ignited her to stay on her creative path and reach her goals to find her place. She used to play in the bands of Sarah Blasko, Old Man River, and Ben Lee. She acts. Jessica shares how meeting Ben Lee reconnected her back to the music. She shares of her experience meeting her beloved Nadav Kahn, and how it felt like destiny when they first met, and shares about motherhood and finding space to create. But it was in this time, immersed in an exquisite difficult bliss, that she found herself inadvertently drawing his face and scribbling down her new experiences without restraint. Holly Throsby is one of my favourite people to chat with. As a prolific songwriter, she's put out five solo albums, as well as a kid's record and the Seeker Lover Keeper project; a collaboration with Sarah Blasko and Sally Seltmann. Over the years I've had the chance to sit down with Holly and talk music and writing many times, and she's forever inspiring in the way she sees, and then writes about the world around her. In the midst of making music a few years ago, the opportunity came up for Holly to write a novel, and she jumped at it. It was literally a dream come true to write long form, and what came out of that was Goodwood; her debut novel. It was critically acclaimed, and now she's just published book number two. With that in mind, I asked Holly to Take 5 with songs that set the scene. Music that evokes a story or paints a picture. She knocked it out of the park, and the way she speaks about music is as lyrical and beautiful as her song and story writing itself. Holly Throsby is a songwriter, musician and author. As an accomplished singer and songwriter, Holly has been performing since 2004, and has released five albums. In 2010, she joined forces with her friends Sarah Blasko and Sally Seltmann to form the indie pop group Seeker Lover Keeper, which released one album the following year. In 2016, she became an author: her first novel was published in September by Allen & Unwin. It's named Goodwood, and it's about what happens to a small town in New South Wales when two prominent members of the community go missing within a week of each other. The story is narrated by a 17 year-old named Jean Brown, and everything we see is filtered through the young narrator as she grapples with the dramatic turn of events. It's a combination of a mystery narrative and a portrait of a town experiencing a collective trauma. Goodwood offers a wonderfully lush and well-realised depiction of several aspects of contemporary Australian life, and it announces Holly as a major talent in fiction writing. I first met Holly in April 2013, when she invited me into her home in Sydney to talk about drug use for my book Talking Smack. In late September 2016, Holly's book was launched in Brisbane by previous Penmanship guest Kathleen Noonan at Avid Reader bookstore. The morning after, we met at an inner-city hotel room for a conversation which touches on her extensive research into the creative process as she began the book's first draft while pregnant with her daughter; why she likes the distance and anonymity that comes with writing fiction; how elements of the story and its characters draw on her upbringing in Sydney's inner west; how she snuck some of her favourite Australian expressions into the book's dialogue; what inspired her to record an album for children, and what led her to write an op-ed for The Sydney Morning Herald about same-sex marriage. Holly Throsby is a Sydney-based songwriter and musician. She has released four solo albums and a children’s album called See! She is known for summoning melodies that sound beautifully crumpled, worn and decades-old, and matching them with hushed, cutting lyrics that read like a Carver short story. Holly has been nominated for four ARIA Awards: two for Best Female Artist, one for Best Children’s Album, and one as part of Seeker Lover Keeper, her band with Sally Seltmann and Sarah Blasko. Goodwood is Holly's debut novel.  Show notes and links to what was discussed in this episode: http://penmanshippodcast.com/episode-33-holly-throsby/ Holly Throsby on Twitter: @HollyThrosby Penmanship on Twitter: @PenmanshipAU penmanshippodcast.com
