Prophecy Radio episode #105 discusses Fox Snare by Yoon Ha Lee, the final book in the Thousand Worlds series! We also break down the latest Riordanverse news, including updates on Survivor season 45, the SAG-AFTRA strike, and those STUNNING new covers for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series exclusively found at Illumicrate. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:02:37) Khadijah Khatib shared her paintings for Chalice of the Gods and the first three Percy Jackson and the Olmypians covers. A Drop of Venom by Sajni Patel got a starred review from Publishers Weekly. Read Riordan has an exclusive excerpt of Fox Snare, as well as a spotlight on Captain Chaewon. You can also meet Eréndira from Dawn of the Jaguar. Becky talked about the differences in the Chalice of the Gods special editions. Did you see the gorgeous Illumicrate editions of Percy Jackson and the Olympians? Kristen updates us on J. Maya's progress on Survivor season 45. Let's hope she doesn't have a target on her back! SAG-AFTRA is going back to the negotiating table on Tuesday, October 24. Here's to hoping we'll have good news next week! Fox Snare by Yoon Ha Lee (00:24:13) We can't believe the Thousand Worlds series has come to a close! What is Fox Snare about? What did we think of this book, and how did it compare to the others? We talk about the various themes we found throughout this book. Min matured so much throughout these books, and it was so great to see her again in this one! Not everyone is happy that she's the bearer of the Dragon Pearl. Jun very much acts as Min's conscience. More on Silhouette later… We wish there had been more information about Sebin's family. The dynamic between Haneul and the others is super interesting and leads to some good conversation. There's also a lot of political intrigue within the pages of this book, but it's done so subtly that it doesn't overtake the story. The Haetae shows up in this book, too, but in a totally different form! It's SO important to remember how young all these characters are! Miho is an interesting character that we'll have to talk more about in the spoiler section. Speaking of, the spoiler section starts at 46:07. We loved all the descriptions of the food that Min was unfamiliar with! Did you realize who the Sun Clans represent? It was interesting to read about the intricacies of the language and culture even though we're reading this in English. We really liked Ambassador Tanaka! And we were so sad to hear about what happened to Silhouette. What was her real name!? The Dragon Pearl will make the best tangerines you've ever had in your life. Did we trust Miho at all over the course of this story?? How did she have control over those creatures on the planet? We're so mad at her for making Haneul sick. And also for blowing up the space station. THE WINK WAS SO GOOD. So…Miho is, like, really old. We really loved how Yoon wrapped up the part of the story with the ghosts. In fact, we loved the end of this book as a whole. We have so many ideas for the future of this series if Yoon Ha Lee decides to write more. Feedback (01:12:38) Anthony writes in to tell us how he got into Percy Jackson and discovered the podcast. Thank you for your kind words! Prophecy Radio episode #104 discusses Chalice of the Gods chapters 6-8 in all their glory! Who is Hebe and why is she so obsessed with chickens? Did your elementary school pizza look like melted vinyl? How do you practice dominance in the herd? We also break down the latest Riordanverse news, including updates on Survivor season 45, the SAG-AFTRA strike, and which Rick Riordan Presents book we'll be discussing next. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:01:45) Dawn of the Jaguar by J.C. Cervantes came out on October 10! You can meet Prince Lord on Read Riordan, as well as read an exclusive excerpt. Fox Snare by Yoon Ha Lee is on sale on October 17. Meet Yang Miho and refamiliarize yourself with Haneul. For the first time in a few months, we got a new blog post from Rick! Rick regales us with highlights from the Chalice of the Gods book tour. He also talked about the WGA strike ending and what that means for the projects he has in the works. Did you see the design of this ORIGINAL Camp Half-Blood shirt? Was anyone else disappointed that the sprayed edges on the UK edition of Chalice of the Gods didn't include the top and bottom? But let's talk about how GORGEOUS those new covers are for Percy Jackson and the Olympians that Khadijah Khatib designed. Here's a link to the Disney Create 100 auction. Tell your rich uncle! Kristen kicks off her korner by talking about J. Maya's current situation on Survivor season 45. Will switching tribes actually help her game!? Who would J team up with if she switched tribes? In worse news…the SAG-AFTRA strike is still ongoing because the AMPTP has stepped away from the negotiating table. Here is SAG-AFTRA's thread about their proposal. You can also read Deadline's articles about how the talks were suspended and the bully tactics being used against SAG-AFTRA. Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:54:16) Let's kick off this discussion with Chalice of the Gods chapter 6! Times Square is, like, a one time thing. We got a billboard reference!! Hebe Jeebies is pretty much the greatest name forever. So funny and so useful! Apparently goat guys love licorice?? This arcade has the same addictive qualities as those stupid phone games you can't seem to put down. Hebe Jeebies definitely has an element of magic to it. Do kids in America know what a hen party is? Percy is in RARE form in these chapters, and we take a moment to talk about how Rick is just killing it in this book. Would you hand Chalice of the Gods or The Lightning Thief to someone you want to get into the series? Who ISN'T always anxious and hungry?? Percy and Stiles are one in the same. WE LOVE SALLY JACKSON!!! Next up: Chalice of the Gods chapter 7. Big Shocker: I Offend a Goddess — Percy Jackson's Memoir We spend a considerable amount of time discussing the pizza of our childhood. Percy is SO anti-boomer, and we're here for it. Why would Hebe assume the trio wants to shave some years of their lives? To her credit, Hebe pretty much instantly realizes what's going on here. And she is NOT happy that they're accusing her of stealing the chalice. Kristen regales us with memories from her elementary school days. Let's wrap this up with Chalice of the Gods chapter 8. We have to define the phrase ‘younged us.' Seeing baby Percy, Annabeth, and Grover was FANTASTIC. Can someone PLEASE draw this?? UNLEASH THE PREDATORS! Karen understands this intense fear of chickens. Just call her Arlo. Are you telling us that Riptide has a childproof cap!? This chapter was SO QUOTABLE. It really was fascinating to see the trio as young kids and see what they struggled with the most. Feedback (01:18:49) Shoutout to The Dam Meme Page and all the other Riordanverse podcasters for being superheroes. Moving forward, we're going to put a spoiler warning on our quote graphics on Instagram for Chalice of the Gods! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 105, in which we'll discuss Fox Snare by Yoon Ha Lee! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #103 discusses the Chalice of the Gods book tour stop in Chicago, and brings you an exclusive interview with Rick Riordan himself. We also break down the latest Riordanverse news, including updates on Survivor season 45, the SAG-AFTRA strike, upcoming Rick Riordan Presents books, and more. Oh, and we also discuss Chalice of the Gods chapters 4 and 5. It's a packed episode that you don't want to miss! New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and we keep our discussions PG-13. News and Updates (00:01:45) There's a lot of birthdays to celebrate this week! Fox Snare by Yoon Ha Lee releases on October 17. Read Riordan wants you to meet Sparkstriker, from Dawn of the Jaguar by J.C. Cervantes, out on October 10. Sarwat Chadda just got a deal for a new middle grade fantasy series from Simon & Schuster, according to Publishers Weekly. We are already obsessed, and we can't wait to check it out in 2025! Read Riordan also wants you to meet Elisson from Chalice of the Gods. Percy Jackson has been on the NYT bestsellers list for approximately eight thousand years. Welcome back to yet another installment of Kristen's Korner! We give you a little update on J. Maya's progress on Survivor season 45. We're so happy she ended up as a GIF. Could she make it to the merge!? Only time will tell! Did you see that Dylan O'Brien and Logan Lerman were striking together the other day? According to SAG-AFTRA, negotiations are ongoing. Hopefully we'll have good news next week! Chalice of the Gods book tour—Chicago (00:17:39) Karen provides all the details from the Chalice of the Gods book tour stop in Chicago. When you see orange t-shirts, you know you've found your people. The WILDEST coincidence occurred while she was there. Shoutout to our new best friend from Anderson's Bookshop. Oh, yeah, we totally have a giveaway in the works. Check our Twitter and Instagram for details! Speaking of, Anderson's sounds like an amazing place with an awesome history. Apologies for the background noise!! Karen got to meet Daniel José Older and it went well even though she was super nervous! Rick definitely gives teacher vibes. One of the highlights of this tour stop was speaking to Stephanie Lurie, Rick's editor! Long live Rick Riordan Presents! Have you seen the promotional video for Chalice of the Gods? If you find it, can you send it to us!? We love how much Daniel and Rick were excited to be there in conversation with each other. A lot of the presentation consisted of information we've already discussed. Can you guess which of the Rick Riordan Presents titles the audience was more excited about? Rick has already seen the cover for the third Serwa Boateng book! It should come as no surprise that the audience went WILD when Rick starting talking about the show. We'll bring you more information from that section after the strike is over. Stephanie Lurie makes an excellent Coach Hedge. Congratulations to everyone who won a chalice!!! Karen got to meet some listeners, and they were AWESOME!! Hopefully Karen AND Kristen can go to the next book tour together. We can't wait for Wrath of the Triple Goddess! Interview with Rick Riordan (00:41:15) Check out our Rick Riordan interview discussing Chalice of the Gods! How does Rick usually plot out his stories? Was this one harder because it fits between two previous series? When did he start working on Wrath of the Triple Goddess? Has anything changed since the last time Rick wrote from Percy Jackson's point of view? Was writing this book different because it was a slice-of-life story? You can definitely feel Mark Oshiro's influence on this book! The spoiler section starts at 49:06. Did Rick ever consider someone else to be the bad guy in this story? Are there any myths that Rick still hasn't written about after all these years? Everyone is a huge fan of Grover and Aryan Simhadri. Rick gives us a little teaser for Wrath of the Triple Goddess! Was it hard writing about Jason? Will we ever get another standalone novel like The Sun and the Star? When might we be getting some updates on all the projects he has going on? Chalice of the Gods discussion (00:54:16) First, let's tackle Chalice of the Gods chapter 4! Percy managed to make it through an entire day of school! We loved the details about Percy trying not to look too weird during swim practice. It's not hard to figure out someone's a god when they can freeze time. There's no way around this: Ganymede is hot. Let's take a trip to Himbo Juice! It's VERY important that we discuss everyone's drink order. There's a very good reason why Ganymede doesn't like eagles. In case anyone doubted it, Annabeth and Grover still have Percy's back. The gig economy is rough on everyone—even gods. Now it's time to discuss Chalice of the Gods chapter 5. Poor Ganymede is triggered. It's a VERY big deal that the chalice is missing. But who could've stolen it? Ganymede has a lot of enemies. Hera is mad that Ganymede has nicer legs than her. But Hebe and Iris used to have the job he has now… What kind of deadline are we working with? Ganymede has a few restrictions for the trio… Thank goodness Grover knows where to start! Feedback (01:18:49) Should this book have included all three quests, or do we like that we're getting a new trilogy? Rachel brings up a question about the timeline of this book and the events of The Last Olympian and Heroes of Olympus. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 104, in which we'll discuss Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods chapters 6 through 8! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Prophecy Radio episode #66 returns from our mini-hiatus to catch you up on all the news we missed while we were away. We're talking about The Sun and the Star, Rick Riordan Presents, Percy Jackson and the Olymjpians, and much, MUCH more. Plus, we read and discuss Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian chapter 20, which contains one of the most iconic scenes in the entire series. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News Roundup (00:04:49) We're back! We had a nice little break, but we're super excited to jump back into Prophecy Radio and catch up on all the news we missed while we were away. We're totally going to keep talking about Greek mythology and Percy Jackson, even as we start in on The Red Pyramid. Let's kick this off by wishing both Thalia Grace (December 22) and Walker Scobell (January 5) a happy, happy birthday. We're so happy that everyone on set seems optimistic about getting more seasons of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Did you see the stunt video that Alex Kyshkovych posted of Walker training for The Adam Project? Read Riordan posted some New Year's resolutions from the gods and demigods, as it's super cute! Except for that last part about Gaea. We find that highly suspicious. Karen has some qualms with their article about the five most underrated demigods, but she finds peace by the end of the discussion. As always, when we see a quiz, we've gotta take it! How did we do on the Rick Riordan Presents quotes quiz? Have you seen the cover to Dawn of the Jaguar by J.C. Cervantes? We're also very excited about Fox Snare, the conclusion to the Thousand Worlds trilogy by Yoon Ha Lee. It's so awesome that Daughter of the Deep is still on the New York Times bestselling books list. Becky has some stuff to say about Chalice of the Gods. Don't forget to pick up The Sword of Hades and get that sneak peek of The Sun and the Star. Karen took some SERIOUS notes about Mark Oshiro's Instagram takeover for Macmillan, so buckle in and made sure you pre-order Into the Light before March 28! We're counting down the days until Mark writes a Rick Riordan Presents book! We really loved the picture of Mark and Rick meeting for the first time. How could you not be jealous about Mark witnessing Rick's process and brilliance firsthand?? Why does Nico mean so much to Mark Oshiro? It's not too much to hope that because this process went so smoothly that we could get books for other characters, right? How crazy is the end of The Sun and the Star going to be!? Rick found it very important to make Will a big part of this book, and we are so excited about that. Do you think Nico is a…snake person!? Keep your eye out for more announcements from Mark soon! Walker confirmed there's only three more weeks of filming after they return from their break. Do we REALLY think the show's release date could be late 2023? Logan Lerman talks about how talented Walker Scobell is. If you're interested, here's a link to the Esquire article about him as well. Becky has some really good things to say about Alexandra Daddario and actors in general. And this article from Sydney Morning Herald was also very good. And that's what you missed on Prophecy Radio! Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian (01:28:52) We're talking about The Last Olympian chapter 20. This chapter is kind of a big deal, and there's a reason why so many people reference it all the time. Why did the Fates remove Luke's body?? Is this a big honor? That bit with the string from The Lightning Thief totally blows our minds. Is this conformation that Percy will grow old!? Will Hermes be able to help May now that the prophecy has been fulfilled? In your copy of the book, does Zeus fly a flag or light up the top of the Empire State Building? We love that both Hades and Nico were welcomed into Olympus as heroes. Why doesn't anyone stand up to Ares and talk about the fact that he's physically abusive to Clarisse? Karen has issues with the scene where Dionysus talks about Zeus reducing his sentence. Poor Grover is feeling so sad, and we hate it! You get a gift! And you get a gift! And YOU get a gift! Grover has had so much growth over these last five books. Hades isn't even ashamed he's the one who told Percy about making them swear on the River Styx. Percy really covered ALL the bases when it comes to his request. Would Sally have been upset if Percy had become a god, or would she have been relieved she wouldn't have to worry about him anymore? Thank goodness Athena spoke up on Percy's behalf. Percy is officially a Hero of Olympus. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 67, where we'll discuss The Sun and the Star: A Nico di Angelo Adventure chapter 1. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Tonight on the GeekNights Book Club, we review and discuss Yoon Ha Lee's Ninefox Gambit. Far future calendar-fueled space battles abound, and we had a good time with it. It's book one of the Machineries of Empire series, and Rym is already well into the rest of it. We also announce that the next book club book will be Nnedi Okorafor's Binti.
Prophecy Radio episode #38 sees Karen and Kristen talking about about hellhounds, both in Greek mythology and the Rick Riordan universe. In addition, the hosts once again tackle all the latest news, including the recent casting of Luke, Clarisse, and Nancy Bobofit for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, as well their Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth review with chapters 9 and 10. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:33) Yoon Ha Lee's Ninefox Gambit is getting the ttrpg treatment. Read Riordan also introduces us to the Haetae, as well as Namjoon. If you have any ARMY friends, you've probably heard what a splash that last article made. Tehlor Kay Mejia, author of the Paola Santiago series, announced a new book in the works! We also discuss Rick Riordan's June 21 blog post. Olivea Morton has been cast as Nancy Bobofit, and while we can also see her as a Rachel Elizabeth Dare, we think she's gonna do a fantastic job. Next up is Dior Goodjohn as Clarisse! We really wanted some body diversity for this character, BUT Dior is going to be fantastic and the whole fandom is already in love with her. We're already thinking about spin-off shows. Lastly, we have Charlie Bushnell as Luke Castellan, and Kristen thinks he gives good brow! Rick is happy. We're happy. Everyone is happy. Monster Guide: Hellhounds (00:28:06) Karen learned a lot about hellhounds for this episode, and she's excited to share it with everyone. Hellhounds share a lot of similarities, but there are many different versions of them across various types of mythology. If you spot these characteristics in the wild, you might be looking at a hellhound. Some of them are really different, and that's super cool! Not all hellhounds are bad, and in fact, some of them are downright helpful. There are also many different types of hellhounds found in various pieces of media and throughout pop culture. In Greek mythology, there aren't a lot of stories about general hellhounds. But there is one very famous hound of Hades—Cerberus! He looks a bit different from other hounds, but fulfills the same purpose. Kristen finally realizes the connection between Cerberus and Fluffy. Hercules is the talk of the town lately because he's also had a run-in with Cerberus. And by run-in, we mean Hades let Hercules takes Cerberus for a walk. But what about in Percy Jackson? We get a pretty clear description of hellhounds from the Ultimate Guide, and there's nothing too surprising in there. Why do you think hellhounds are afraid of heights? When do hellhounds/Mrs. O'Leary show up in the original series? We also talk about which Rick Riordan Presents books have hellhounds! Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth chapter reviews (00:43:22) Let's start with the poop in Battle of the Labyrinth chapter 9. Percy is SUCH a great main character, and we're so proud of him. Is Percy Jackson overpowered? Did Geryon get the better end of the deal here?? WHO IS ‘THEY'? We knew we liked Eurytion for a reason. There's definitely a parallel here between Percy and Eurytion when it comes to immortality. We were totally shocked to find out who was sending Percy the Iris messages. Watch your ears because Karen has an epiphany. Ready for Battle of the Labyrinth chapter 10? How did we feel about the meeting with Bianca? Why did she have dominion over the other spirits? We learn the fatal flaw of Hades' children. Prophecy Count #20! Does Luke already have Ariadne's String? Old Daedalus is a scary Daedalus. Why does Eurytion act like other children of Ares? Why couldn't it be “Follow the butterflies”!? The teacher really came out of Rick here. It's a good thing Annabeth listened to Percy here and didn't give into her fatal flaw. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 39, where we rewatch Karen's favorite Disney movie—Hercules! This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then do a deep dive on the god of war himself, Ares (plus fancast him for Percy Jackson and the Olympians), as well as read Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse chapters 17 and 18. New episodes of Prophecy Radio air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:47) Did anyone enjoy #TitansCurseWeek? Oh well, hope you're prepared for #BattleOfTheLabyrinthWeek! If you've read Aru Shah and the Nectar of Immortality, then you already know who Rudy Rocks is. With Ballad and Dagger coming out this week, it's time to meet Mateo Matisse and Chela Hidalgo. We also got some great book news this week! First up, Pahua and the Soul Stealer by Lori M. Lee is getting TWO sequels. We also have an official title for City of the Plague God book 2. Plus, Sarwat Chadda is designing his own cover! Then Kristen surprises Karen with even more news—Tiger Honor by Yoon Ha Lee is getting a sequel. Everyone is highly anticipating Percy Jackson and the Olympians casting, especially because we just found out our Grover is headed to Vancouver. And don't worry! There WILL be more updates soon. By the way, Rick doesn't mind if the cast of the musical (or probably the show) signs your books! How do we get our hands on some blue candy? Becky and the kids helped Rick with research for Sea of Monsters! Isn't that nice? Say hello to the Koningsdam. Walker Scobell did an interview with Rolling Stone in which he talked about reading Percy Jackson for the first time. Deep Dive: Ares (00:17:29) Ares was a fun god to do, especially after the craziness that was Zeus. What does Ares look like according to Greek mythology? Why does Ares have so many sacred animals? We debate poisonous versus venomous. We also learn the differences between Ares and Athena, as deities of war. Ares is so much more than just the god of war. Is Ares a coward? Ares' fortress in Thrace sounds kind of awesome, to be honest. What would YOU be the god of? You won't be too surprised when you learn who worshiped Ares. We don't want to know how Ares wound up with dragon sons. Now we know who to blame for those skeleton warriors, and it isn't Ares!! It should come as no surprise that Ares was put on trial for murder. What is Ares like in the Percy Jackson books? It's always interesting how we envision characters in a book differently than they're described. A baseball bat is the perfect weapon for his spear to turn into. Wait, how big is his motorcycle!? Never forget the seat made of Caucasian human skin. Ares is definitely an iconic character. Karen's first pick would be perfect based on looks alone, but he's a little too old. Meanwhile, Kristen's least likely pick would be awesome but he doesn't usually play outright villains. Karen's next pick is a Sons of Anarchy alum, but maybe not the one you're thinking. Kristen's next choice is definitely a pretty boy, but she's very certain he could pull off being Ares. The first person Karen thought of is someone we all know, and he's played good guys and bad guys alike. We take a break and play a little bit of word association. Kristen's next pick is used to playing big, intimidating characters. Karen's top choice will come as no surprise to anyone who knows her. Kristen's final choice has played an extremely evil character in the past. We had a listener write in with her own pick for Ares! Never Doubt Rick Riordan. Chapter Reviews (01:03:52) We're getting close to the end of the book! Starting off, let's get into Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse chapter 17. Thalia seems a lot more herself in this chapter. “The sky still yearns to embrace the earth.” We discuss the importance of that grey streak in Annabeth's hair. Why did Percy's sword fail him? Percy is so brave! He's such a fantastic character. Thank goodness for Mr. Chase. Thalia versus Luke was a pretty awesome scene. How would we have felt if Luke had died at the end of this chapter? Is that REALLY where the story of Santa Clause came from? It's so amazing to see how far Percy has come with Thalia and Zoë. Now it's time for Titan's Curse chapter 18. This one was pretty rough. But once again we have to shout-out Mr. Chase trying his best. How does one monster-proof a house? Asking for a friend. Annabeth ran away for the first time when she was seven. Is her dad really the same person he was back then? The fact that their relationship is messy is actually quite realistic, and it's good for kids to see in media. Zoë's death scene was brutal. How long did she know she was the one from the prophecy? We get to meet some new pegasi. Annabeth and Percy should've hugged!! So, Luke is totally not dead. What now!? And why was Annabeth so certain about that? Would Percy have felt Luke deserved to die if he hadn't just lost Bianca and Zoë? Karen's up to her usual terrible jokes. Feedback (01:45:40) Jessica asks us how long Annabeth held up the sky, and we try our best to figure it out. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 31, where we'll do a deep dive on the god Hades and discuss our fancasting for Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Karen is also throwing Shattered Midnight into the ring, as it's also by Dhonielle Clayton. We get another lovely Solangelo book update! Also, Kristen totally gets how awesome and interesting LEGOs can be. Be sure to enter our Tiger Honor giveaway! Tiger Honor by Yoon Ha Lee (00:20:59) Read Karen's Tiger Honor book review. What are our general thoughts on Tiger Honor compared to Dragon Pearl? Sebin is a very different main character from Min. Did we like them? Are YOU a rule follower, or do you like to cause trouble like Min? A huge theme of this book is duty and loyalty, both to family and the Space Forces. The Juhwang tiger clan is intense. Like, really intense. Did we like anyone from the tiger clan?? It was nice to see Min and Jun again! Let's meet the new side characters. Which were our favorites? Okay, it's time to talk about Captain Hwan. Have our thoughts changed on him since we last saw him in Dragon Pearl? He's brought in some reinforcements. How did YOU picture Shield, Sena's sapsali? Is there room for more books in the Thousand World series? Chapter Reviews (01:00:15) It's time to talk about Sea of Monsters chapter 9. Okay, is it cool or creepy that Tyson can imitate voices? Do we think Thalia would've been on Luke's side? We totally see where Luke is coming from, but he's going about it the wrong way. Who are Luke's friends at Camp Half-Blood? Is Luke angrier at his dad or at the other gods? We kind of feel bad for Hermes! Tyson is the true MVP. Are you ready for chapter 10? Thank the gods (or one god in particular) for that thermos! But there's a bigger question here—how exactly do Iris messages work? You'll never have to be afraid if you're lost at sea with Percy Jackson! It makes a lot of sense that chain stores are evil. We get a little confused, but Percy has definitely never seen a hydra before. At least book Percy is smarter than movie Percy. Thank goodness for…Clarisse? We love that Percy recognized his own jealousy. You can take the demigod out of the city, but you can't take the city out of the demigod. Who doesn't love a good Monster Donut? Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 17, where we'll discuss “The Diary of Luke Castellan” from The Demigod Diaries. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Each episode, our Prophecy Radio hosts and their guests will keep you up to date on the latest information coming out of Camp Half-Blood, including upcoming books and adaptation news, discuss a topic of choice, and do a chapter by chapter reread of the Percy Jackson series. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then jump into the Dragon Pearl and the short story “The Initiation” by Yoon Ha Lee, as well as analyze chapters 7 and 8 of Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:02:12) Here's to another socially distanced episode! Happy birthday, Magnus Chase! Becky says they're working on stuff! Wouldn't some official artwork from PJOTV be awesome? Karen was trying to be realistic, but Kristen just wants a greenlight. You can pre-order Reclaim the Stars right now! (CORRECTION: Karen was reading the list of RRP authors from A Universe of Wishes. The correct ones for Reclaim the Stars include J.C. Cervantes, Mark Oshiro, and Daniel José Older.) Karen will be doing a full review on Subjectify Media. Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee (00:04:47) It was really nice to read Dragon Pearl and Tiger Honor back to back. Kristen mostly listened to Dragon Pearl on audiobook (narrated by Kim Mai Guest). Karen and Kristen had opposite problems when it came to name pronunciations! But pronunciation guides are a life saver and we love them. We have flashbacks to the Hermione debacle. This will be mostly spoiler-free until the end! Karen first fell in love with the idea of fox spirits thanks to Teen Wolf. Sci-fi meets folk lore/mythology is a really unique take. Kristen doesn't read a lot of sci-fi, though she does enjoy the genre in film. Dragon Pearl felt a little more like YA to us than MG, but in a good way! Middle grade is NOT a dumbed down version of young adult fiction. Fox spirits have some awesome abilities. It's really gotta come in handy! There are a lot of logistics when it comes to shapeshifting. (This is where we should've said, DON'T QUESTION THE SCIENCE.) Min is a troublemaker, but that's why we love her. The Space Forces is a little like the Federation in Star Trek, and it's amazing Min was able to sneak her way into the ranks! It's a pretty big deal that it seems like Jun defected, and that's why she wants to get to the bottom of what's going on. Dragon Pearl and Daughter of the Deep had some similar vibes. *sings “Into the Unknown”* Poor Jang barely enjoyed his time in space. But let's talk about spirits and how they interact with the world around them. There's a lot of suspense and tension in this book, not least because Min is pretending to be another person! Min asks permission to take over Jang's identity, and we really loved that. Let's meet Sujin and Haneul! They're pretty cool. Who wouldn't want a magical spork that can summon snacks? It would be really cool to be a dragon spirit. Kristen is really down with the idea of being able to control the weather. Captain Hwan was a scary guy … or was he!? For the record, he does NOT have a tiger head (except in Karen's imagination). We take a Kung Fu Panda break. This book was very queer friendly and we are HERE for it. The commonality of using pronouns in every day life was refreshing. It doesn't make sense to have the entire universe at your fingertips and have everyone be straight. This book is SUCH a good introduction to LGBTQIA+ concepts for kids. Are foxes born non-binary? SPOILERS ARE INCOMING. You can skip to the chapter reviews section. Did we guess that Captain Hwan was the one behind everything? It may or may not have crossed our minds that Jun was evil BUT ONLY FOR A SECOND. Justice for Jun! The fact that Jun is sticking around made up for his death! At least Min and Jun can be together now. Together…FOREVER. It's gonna get awkward. Their relationship is super strong and we love it. And that's a great segue into the Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities short story “The Initiation” by Yoon Ha Lee. Min has a complex background, but her intelligence and resourcefulness is unparalleled. Let's meet some new characters! Which ones were our favorites? Those initial tests are NO JOKE. We dive a little more deeply into the prejudice against foxes and ghosts. Yeah, we would DEFINITELY read more about this group of characters. Chapter Reviews (00:58:53) Let's get into Sea of Monsters chapter 7! This chapter was necessary to get from point A to point B, but it was still interesting! We're glad Annabeth and Percy now have a common enemy. And a problem to solve! We should probably talk about Tantalus. …It does kind of make sense to give Clarisse the quest. Tantalus' story is VERY scary. And now his punishment makes so much more sense. We love how Coke calms Percy's brain down. How do these kids get their gold drachmas? What's the exchange rate? We've been playing too many video games. Hermes is surprisingly approachable. That Eris reference was EPIC. Thank you, Hermes, for the internet. Flinstone vitamins FTW. We love a good itemized packing scene. Ancient History is kind of Ancient History for the demigods, too. Kristen can't just pick a single line. Now it's time for chapter 8! The hippocampi are SO COOL. And Tyson's affection for them is adorable. We try to wrap our heads around Tyson's timeline, but we need more information. Rainbow can't climb ladders. :( Let's talk about Grover. Prophecy Count: 8! It's very important to have a timeline. This chapter was short but leaves on a huge cliffhanger! Karen ain't afraid of no hellhound! It's really cool that Perseus got a happy ending. Percy didn't want to be rude to his dad. Stick around to hear the awesome feedback we got this week! Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 16, where we'll discuss Tiger Honor by Yoon Ha Lee. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then list out all the companion books, short stories, and illustrated editions we have so far, as well as analyze chapters 5 and 6 of Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:15) Karen and Kristen are throwing responsibility out the window forever! Aru Shah and the End of Time graphic novel debuted at #1 on Amazon! Daughter of the Deep jumped to #1 on the NYT bestsellers list. Sarwat Chadda is working on the next draft of Rise of the Chaos Goddess. We get a fantastic update about the Solangelo book. We're really excited to check in with other characters too. Kristen and Karen think they're hilarious. The Percy Jackson Disney+ show's writers room is back at it again! Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting sounds great. We take a quick moment to shout out In Every Generation by Kendare Blake. Companion books, short stories, illustrated editions, oh my! (00:07:43) The Demigod Files includes three short stories, all of which sound great! We've read most of these, but it's been a while, so we don't remember them as well as we'd like. But Clarisse and Percy together is bound to be a lot of fun. (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3) Oh, hey there, Charles Beckendorf! We get a wild Festus sighting, and we're so happy. How much did the Lightning Thief movie pull from “Sword of Hades” for Persephone's character? Don't forget, you can check these out at your local library! The Ultimate Guide is so much fun and a great collector's item. It's also very practical and incredibly useful! There is a cursed picture of Karen dressed as a daughter of Hephaestus for Halloween. We go off on a Beanie Baby tangent. “Percy Jackson and the Singer Apollo” is full of chaos, and we love it. Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods and Greek Heroes are SO PRETTY. Who HASN'T read Percy Jackson? Camp Half-Blood Confidential is another good pocket guide to keep on hand. Plus, there's the coloring book, with art by Keith Robinson. We only have the Lightning Thief illustrated edition and it's a TRAVESTY. John Rocco says there are no current plans to do more. Nobody would complain about more John Rocco art. Not to get ahead of ourselves, but we need a Percy Jackson Land at Disney World. We might have to do a whole episode on that idea. Let's dive into the Heroes of Olympus series now! We kick off with The Demigod Diaries, and “The Diary of Luke Castellan.” We'll be talking about this one in-depth soon! Hera is always messing things up. Ever heard of the bacchanalia? “The Son of Magic” was written by Rick's son! It's a fan-favorite. The Demigods of Olympus app might be long-gone. Time for the Kane Chronicles books! The Survival Guide is another awesome book to have on hand. Justice for Magnus Chase! Kristen will have to read the Kane Chronicles soon! The crossover short stories were a VERY BIG DEAL back in the day. But where's our crossover SERIES? Where's the Riordan Literary Universe (RLU)? And then Karen brings us all down. MOVING ON. We love Magnus Chase so much, and luckily there are some great guides for it. Einherjar is a very difficult word to say. There's always time for new books down the line! Did we…do a good job!? Let's talk graphic novels and why WE NEED MORE. Shhh, we're not allowed to have other interests! Chapter Reviews (00:38:13) Let's talk about Sea of Monsters chapter 5! Karen's living for Kristen's recaps. Everyone knows that feeling when your mom cleans your room against your will. Camp Half-Blood isn't a safe space anymore. Goodbye FOR NOW. Despite being “immortal,” it's so interesting how gods must rely on mortal worship to keep them going. We are not fans of Tantalus. Is Mr. D trying to comfort Tantalus, or is he giving him false hope? Can everyone please stop being mean to Tyson!? Are the other campers jealous of Tyson? We shouldn't be so cavalier about death. We are very happy to meet Charles Beckendorf again. We go on a Sponge-Bob tangent but Karen had to prove she has a brain. Time for chapter 6! BRAIN WORKS. Karen is very mad at Percy. BUT this is a good lesson for kids to learn. Karen was the annoying little brother. Lowercase pegasus versus capital letter Pegasus. Team Percabeth breaks up very quickly. Tyson gets a stick! Karen does not want to talk about the birdnado. Rick did Dean Martin dirty. Prophecy Count: 7 A lot has already happened in these first six chapters. We were feeling a lot of emotions today. And we have some feedback to go through! Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 15, in which we'll discuss Dragon Pearl by Yoon Ha Lee and “The Initiative” from Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz discuss the latest news in the Percy Jackson/Rick Riordan Presents fandom, then come up with all the book moments they wish were in the movie and want in the television show, as well as analyze chapters 3 and 4 of Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:02:19) Happy New Year! Welcome to 2022—there's going to be so much great stuff this year. Thank you to everyone who followed us on Twitter! There's 100 of you now! Let's discuss Rick's blog from December 30, 2021. Rick Riordan Presents has been SO successful, and we're so grateful! Tiger Honor comes out January 4, 2022 (artwork by Vivienne To). Read the prologue. And don't forget to check out Yoon Ha Lee's virtual tour. Meet Shaman Sena and Shield, plus Kim Jun. You can pre-order Ballad and Dagger now! Did you see the Daughter of the Deep artwork? Don't forget—DotD is still going to be live-action! The Solangelo book is such a collaborative process, and we're so here for it. How has it been TWO YEARS since Rick started working on the Kane Chronicles/PJOTV adaptations!? Could we get a greenlight…this month? Don't forget to submit your tapes for the open casting call! The Lightning Thief moments we want in the show (00:17:54) Let's talk about the moments from the first book we want to see on screen. Because let's face it—the movie didn't do the book justice. We gotta see Percy fight Clarisse with the toilet water, right!? And it's not just because it's a hilarious scene! And what about Annabeth taming Cerberus? The character work is gonna be amazing, and hopefully we get the chimera, too. Speaking of the Underworld, that's going to be amazing to see. How spooky do you think the show will get? Because Tartarus is a creepy place! Oh, and let's not forget about the time Percy realizes he can breathe underwater. We might know who Percy's dad is going to be, but we still want to see all the lead up to the reveal. Those moments where we see the character (and actor) discover what's going on are important! So many important characters were also left out of the movie. We HAVE to get Ares in there, you know? It's gonna be nuts, and we can't wait. How could they change that final battle? Karen would like to remind you of her undying love for Mr. D. Plus, we definitely need a Seaweed Brain moment. And let's not forget about Grover and his tin cans! What do the Camp Half-Blood beads look like in Rick's brain? We could go on forever, but let's call it there! Which moments do you really want to see in the show? Chapter Reviews (00:50:51) Sea of Monsters chapter 3 really said, “Fight for your life, Percy!” Annabeth was kinda mean this chapter. :( BUT it really is good character development, and that's important, too. Too many Harry Potter references! What's the difference between the Fates and the Gray Sisters? A little Night Bus, a little Hercules. Percy was feeling BRAVE in that taxi cab. Karen Googled the numbers. She also gets the best quotes/moments because she makes the doc. Chapter 4 has a really cool fight scene with some awesome creatures. It's good that Percy stands up to Annabeth once in a while. Poor, Tyson! If we get a season 2, this is going to be an amazing opener. Everything has changed at Camp, and we don't like it. Wait, how did Tyson's clothes survive the fire? Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next time for episode 14, in which we'll discuss all of the companion novels, short stories, illustrated editions, and more set within the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles universe. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. Welcome to Prophecy Radio, a Percy Jackson podcast dedicated to all of Rick Riordan's past, present, and future projects! Co-hosts Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz talk about what's new in the Percy Jackson fandom, discuss all the books the Rick Riordan Presents authors have written outside of the Disney imprint, and analyze chapters 13 and 14 of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air weekly, and all ages are welcome to tune in. News and Updates (00:01:07) This might be the longest doc we've had so far. First and foremost, we have news from Rick's blog! There's no current plan for a Daughter of the Deep sequel, but never say never! The Lords of Night: A Shadow Bruja Novel and Serwa Boateng's Guide of Vampire Hunting have official release dates and synopses. We have an official update on where in the process the Nico di Angelo book currently is. The book is at 117,000 words. How many pages is that? We're probably not getting anymore Percy Jackson television show news until 2022. That includes no news for Disney+ Day. BUT we know Becky and Rick have reviewed some casting callback tapes. Read Riordan has spotlights on Nelinha, Ester, and Gemini. The Last Fallen Star is officially in New Zealand! You can sing to the karaoke version of The Lightning Thief Musical! (Edit: Apparently this is from 2019, and we had no idea!) “Forget Horse Girls, Embrace the Mythology Freak” by Jenny G. Zhang (here's the tweet) Sorry, Frank. Why did we like mythology so much, and what do all the mythology freaks have in common? (Say hi to Callie!) Rick Riordan Presents authors' other series (00:18:47) We're really excited about all the books, novellas, anthologies, and short stories these authors have written. But fair warning: There are A LOT. Anthologies have really made a resurgence lately, and we're into it. Up first is Roshani Chokshi, who wrote the Pandava Quintet/Aru Shah books! She's got some other stories here about Hindu mythology that might be for older audiences. And one of her books definitely gives Six of Crows vibes, if you're into that! Next up is J.C. Cervantes! Look, sometimes words are hard. Karen just wants to keep Kristen on her toes. Yoon Ha Lee, who wrote Dragon Pearl, is a very prolific writer. There's a lot of sci-fi here, and some really cool concepts. Kristen gets her mind blown, repeatedly. Festus, is that you? Thank the gods for Wikipedia. Next on our happy hit parade is Carlos Hernandez, who wrote Sal & Gabi. Karen learned a fun fact about him, and she is very excited. Short stories can get W E I R D. Kwame Mbalia wrote the Tristan Strong series, as well as some other cool books. Black Boy Joy seems like a really important book to have right now. You might as well just assume almost everyone has written short stories. Tehlor Kay Mejia wrote the Paola Santiago series, and she's up next. She's got some great titles. If you liked Dumplin', then you might like Miss Meteor. Forests are so cool and creepy. Karen gets a book idea in the middle of recording. Graci Kim wrote the Gifted Clan series, and Karen has a quick aside about the last book in the series. She hasn't written any other books, but we have some fun facts to share about her! Who knew running away to the circus was so common? Rebecca Roanhorse wrote Race to the Sun, and a lot more!. You should watch Love and Monsters. And then go read Roar by Cora Carmack. We love a good title. And a good name. How do we feel about historical fiction? Here's LeVar Burton reading “Wherein Abigail…,” “Takeback Tango,” and “Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience ™.” Sarwat Chadda wrote City of the Plague God, as well as some other interesting books! Have you seen A Little Princess? Shoutout to Animorphs! More short stories! More anthologies! Next up is Lori M. Lee, who wrote Pahua and the Soul Stealer. She's a busy lady, but she does plan to finish her Gates of Thread and Stone series. See? Forests are creepy! Yeah, you should definitely read A Thousand Beginnings and Endings. Roseanne A. Brown wrote Serwa Boateng's Guide to Vampire Hunting, which we are very excited about. She also just finished up her duology in her A Song of Wraiths and Ruin series. They have some incredibly stunning covers. It's so cool that so many of these authors have written for Marvel and Star Wars, too. Daniel José Older wrote Ballad & Dagger, which definitely has some shared threads with one of his other series. If you're looking for an adult series, look no further than Bone Street Rumba! Daniel has written *all* kinds of books. Well-behaved spirits are super lame. Who else loves Waterworld?? Stacey Lee will be writing Winston Chu Versus the Whimsies, and Karen's definitely heard of her books before. Bridgerton might be a little spicy for our younger listeners. Historical fiction about non-white stories are always interesting reads. Everyone is running away to the circus! Karen brings the whole podcast down. Lastly, we've got Tracey Baptiste, who will be writing Moko Magic. Lots of jumbies here! Let's throw in some Minecraft, shall we? More jumbies! Plus, some non-fiction! We did it! We made it! We hope you found your next read. If you've read any of these, let us know which ones we should start with! Chapter Reviews (01:19:21) Let's talk about The Lightning Thief chapters 13 and 14. Grover sleeps a lot. Thank the gods for Annabeth. That chimera? No, thank you. Ohio reference! Karen breaks Kristen. It's always interesting when the female goddesses give birth to the demigods. Annabeth's childhood sounds rough, and it's so sad. But we can't wait to see her relationship with her father improve. Percy doesn't want to be enemies! What, exactly, is Poseidon's domain? Prophecy Count: 4 Percy can see through the Mist a lot better now. The dark is very scary. Percy really needed to take this moment to reflect on everything that's happening to him. Who was the woman in the water? How did that lady see through the Mist? But, seriously, how exactly does the Mist work? How has Percy never noticed he can breathe underwater? Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for episode 8, which will discuss some Daughter of the Deep spoilers. City of the Plague God by Sarwat Chadda is getting a sequel! Tower of Nero is now in paperback! Daughter of the Deep and Cursed Carnival are number one on Amazon! Be sure to check out the profile on Thandiwe from Tristan Strong. Carlos Hernandez did an awesome interview with Nerd Daily. Ashlee Latimer has been doing Rick's social media for a whole year! Karen watched the Cursed Carnival live video and has some fun facts from the event! Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities Who wrote Cursed Carnival and Other Calamities? Some of these stories are a bit hefty! Read Karen's full Cursed Carnival review. Welcome to the Multiverse Mansion! Do the Rick Riordan Presents books exist in the Percy Jackson universe? Karen is still gunning for a crossover series from Rick. Kristen has no prior knowledge of any of the RRP stories. Mythology overload! What's up with this whole Gum Baby thing? Kristen had a little bit of an easier time with Rebecca Roanhorse's story. Sawat's story was full of sarcasm and dry wit. What's not to love? J.C. Cervantes' story really hits you with the mythology super fast! Now it's Karen's turn! She's read the books from the authors of the stories covered here. Read “Calamity Juice” first! Suffice it to say there are some Doctor Strange implications here. Not to play favorites, but Aru Shah is really awesome. Yoon Ha Lee's story was exciting because we're gonna get another book in this series. We find out why Kristen has trust issues. “The Initiation” has a lot of positive, subtle, natural representation. How could you not love Bruto!? Graci Kim, please give us enchanted baked goods. Last but not least, let's talk about Rick Riodan's new story. Will “My Life as a Child Outlaw” be related to anything else? Is this kid-friendly? Do we like the main character? There's a spinoff here that we'd love to read. Learning how to pronounce all the words was really fun! Chapter Reviews It's time to talk about The Lightning Thief chapters 3 and 4. We are now a Grover appreciation podcast. Favorite quotes and moments for chapter 3! Long live blue foods! Gabe is the worst. We're getting some Hagrid vibes here. Grover has no pants. Prophetic dreams are so fun to analyze. Prophecy Count: 1 On to chapter 4. How could you resist reading a book with chapter titles like this?? There's a reason why we made a Percy Jackson podcast. Kristen stole Karen's favorite moment, but it's okay, she found another one. We're SO CLOSE to Camp Half-Blood. Sally Jackson spinoff??? Percy must be just a little overwhelmed. Rick Riordan really is a phenomenal writer. We're having so much fun, and we hope you are, too! Please reach out to us if you have any questions or comments. Thanks for listening, and be sure to tune in next week for episode 3, which will discuss Rick Riordan Presents in more detail. This episode's hosts are: Karen Rought and Kristen Kranz. This standalone story follows a nonbinary painter as they team up with a pacifist mecha dragon against an evil empire, and it takes place in a magical version of Korea during the Japanese occupation. Yoon and Travis discuss Yoon's experience with watercolor and animation, the important role of art in culture, and how colonization seeks to undermine and destroy that role. Forty-six minutes and a trickle of seconds remained before the end of the world---this world, anyway---and I was trying to evacuate the second-last client on my list. Some apocalypses come in with horns blaring and guns blazing and cascades of fire. Some apocalypses like to be obvious. This wasn't one of them. The humans had various names for their world. My partner Rawk and I called it Seedworld 722.11.15, which was our superiors' label. We'd seen a lot of Seedworlds perish, she and I. | Copyright 2019 by Yoon Ha Lee. Narrated by Judy Young.

The Warhosts sit in the lees of the starships while the sky grows less flushed with dawn, playing cards. At the same time, the regulators within the Red emissary and our own play their own game across a moist medium of flesh, chemical brew, and stench to determine where the next battle will be fought. We---the Purples---have been fighting the Reds for possession of this moon, jigsaw piece by slow jigsaw piece, as deliberately as a pavane or carved ice. The Reds have grown increasingly desperate. The moon has a certain strategic importance, and the Reds are very close to having to cede it entirely. | Copyright 2014 by Yoon Ha Lee. In an empire at the wide sea's boundaries, where the clouds were the color of alabaster and mother-of-pearl, and the winds bore the smells of salt and faraway fruits, the young and old of every caste gathered for their empress's funeral. In life she had gone by the name Beryl-Beneath-the-Storm. Now that she was dead, the court historians were already calling her Weave-the-Storm, for she had been a fearsome naval commander. | Copyright 2013 by Yoon Ha Lee.
