Romulans and Star Trek (2009). Star Trek (2009) featured a prominent role for a revenge-seeking 24th-century Romulan captain named Nero and his unusual ship, the Nerada. Nero's time travel to the 23rd century created an alternate timeline and left fans wondering what led to the Romulan supernova of 2387—and what happened after. Finally, the first season of Star Trek: Picard, along with the Picard: Countdown comics and Una McCormack's novel The Last Best Hope, have provided some answers. In this episode of The Line, hosts Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi, Brandon-Shea Mutala, and Justin Oser discuss Star Trek (2009) and its connections to Star Trek: Picard. We cover the Romulan supernova, the Nerada, and the parallels between survivors who have lost their homeworlds. We also share news about our own future. Dominic Burgess Interview. For English actor Dominic Burgess, a longtime dream came true when he appeared as the sentient reptiloid Mr. Vup in the Star Trek: Picard episode “Stardust City Rag.” A huge Star Trek fan, Burgess played Bjayzl's bodyguard on Freecloud, delivering a memorable performance as an intimidating character with an exceptional olfactory system. In this episode of The Line, hosts Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi, Brandon-Shea Mutala, and Justin Oser are joined by Burgess to learn about his love of Star Trek, thoughts on playing a new species, and what it was like working with Patrick Stewart, Jeri Ryan, and Jonathan Frakes. We also discuss the controversy surrounding “Stardust City Rag.” Hosts Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi, Brandon-Shea Mutala, and Justin Oser Guest Dominic Burgess Production Brandon-Shea Mutala (Editor and Producer) Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi (Producer) Justin Oser (Producer) C Bryan Jones (Executive Producer) Matthew Rushing (Executive Producer) Ken Tripp (Executive Producer) Norman C. Picard: Countdown Comics, with Literary Treks. The first stories related to Star Trek: Picard that were released were not seen on screen, but instead were part of a three-issue comic series called Star Trek: Picard: Countdown. Two comic issues came out before Star Trek: Picard premiered in January 2020 and gave readers their first glimpse into the world of a new series. A third issue came out shortly after the first episode, “Remembrance.” Now that we've seen the entirety Picard Season 1, how do the comics inform and add to the show? In this episode of The Line, hosts Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi, Brandon-Shea Mutala, and Justin Oser are joined by Bruce Gibson and Dan Gunther of Literary Treks to discuss the Star Trek: Picard: Countdown comic trilogy. We talk about the differences in the values held by the Romulans and the Federation, how the comics approach a story that is a prequel to the show, whether Starfleet was wrong to end the Romulan rescue mission, and more. Evan Evagora Interview. When Elnor was introduced in the Star Trek: Picard episode “Absolute Candor,” actor Evan Evagora became the first Australian series regular in Star Trek history. Through his appearances in seven episodes of the first season, Elnor shows his incredible fighting prowess while maintaining his charming innocence, which is unlike that of any Romulan we had seen before. In this episode of The Line, hosts Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi, Brandon-Shea Mutala, and Justin Oser are joined by Evagora to learn about his experience working with Patrick Stewart and Jeri Ryan, using his natural Australian accent as Elnor, what it was like to live in the United States while filming the show, his positive and negative interactions on social media, and much more! Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2. The first season of Star Trek: Picard has come to an end, and opinions on the finale—and the season as a whole—have run the gamut from glowing praise to bitter criticism. In “Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2,” we see Soji coming to understand her place in the universe, a tense confrontation between the Federation and the Romulans, and the moving reunion between Picard and Data that leads to an unexpected new beginning. Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1. The perceived danger of synthetic life has been an important theme in Star Trek: Picard since the pilot episode. In “Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1,” we finally arrive at Soji's homeworld, Coppelius, and see a group of synthetic life forms that now must grapple with a threat to its existence. Meanwhile, the crew of La Sirena get caught in the middle as a Romulan fleet approaches. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss the penultimate episode of Star Trek: Picard, “Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 1.” We explore the introduction of Noonian Soong's son Altan Inigo Soong, the synth society he created together with Bruce Maddox, and the android Sutra, who reinterprets the warning called the Admonition. We also discuss the connection between the episode title and two 17th-century paintings, and share our predictions for the season finale. Broken Pieces. Bits of the Star Trek: Picard story have been sprinkled across the first seven episodes, setting up the eighth to bring them altogether in a powerful, emotional episode. In “Broken Pieces,” each of La Sirena's crew candidly examines who they are and where they should go, while Seven of Nine and Elnor attempt to liberate the Artifact from Romulan control. In this episode of The Line, hosts Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi, Justin Oser, and Brandon-Shea Mutala discuss the eighth episode of Star Trek: Picard, “Broken Pieces.” We explore the ancient warning called the Admonition, Seven's creation of a mini-collective on the Artifact, Jurati coming to terms with her terrible actions, and Soji continuing to explore who she is and how she fits into the universe. We also discuss Rios's haunted past, Raffi's entertaining interactions with his holograms, and the moving conversation between Picard and Soji about Data. Nepenthe. The last time that we saw Will Riker and Deanna Troi together with Jean-Luc Picard was in Star Trek: Nemesis, when a newly married Captain Riker and Commander Troi were about to embark on adventures aboard the USS Titan. Twenty years later, the couple—now retired—returns in the series Star Trek: Picard for a heartfelt reunion with their beloved captain. Lending a helping hand, they provide Picard and Soji much-needed refuge at their peaceful home on the beautiful planet Nepenthe as they try to digest the dramatic events that have turned lives upside down. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss the seventh episode of Star Trek: Picard, “Nepenthe.” We explore the much-anticipated meeting of TNG favorites, Will and Deanna's charming daughter Kestra and her friendship with Soji, and the dangerous turn of events for Elnor and Hugh back on the Artifact. We also discuss the worlds and languages invented by Thaddeus Troi-Riker, what may be happening with Rios, Jurati, and Raffi, and the disturbing images we see in a mind-meld between Commodore Oh and Jurati. Midseason Supplemental. The first season of Star Trek: Picard has passed the halfway mark, and each episode has led to a lot of discussion. The fifth, “Stardust City Rag,” was particularly controversial, and we wanted to take this opportunity to dive deeper into some of the debates it has generated. In this supplemental episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi debate whether Seven of Nine's actions were justified, ask if the Una McCormack's tie-in novel The Last Best Hope is essential for watching Star Trek: Picard, and explore the differences in the portrayal of sex and violence. The Impossible Box. “I Borg”—the acclaimed episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation that aired in May 1992—introduced Hugh, the first individual we see who has been liberated from the Borg Collective. After two more appearances in the series, Hugh has returned almost three decades later in Star Trek: Picard as the executive director of the Borg Reclamation Project. In “The Impossible Box,” Picard and Hugh have an emotional reunion amid the major storylines of Picard's quest to find Soji—all while the intrigue aboard the Artifact finally leads to dramatic results. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss the sixth episode of Star Trek: Picard, “The Impossible Box.” We explore the long-awaited meeting of Picard and Hugh, the deep friendship between Raffi and Rios, and the sudden turn in Soji and Narek's interaction. We also talk about the flaws we seem to be seeing in Picard himself, more about life aboard La Sirena, and Picard finding Soji after half a season of searching. Stardust City Rag. Star Trek has rarely shown us the fringes of the galaxy without at least some of the perspective coming from Starfleet characters. In Star Trek: Picard, we're seeing 24-century life in more parts of the galaxy that are far from the oversight of the Federation, and where few interactions with Starfleet officers occur. In “Stardust City Rag,” the crew of La Sirena go on a mission to find cyberneticist Bruce Maddox. They trace him to a city where it seems almost anything goes and any sort of official law is a distant memory. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss the fifth episode of Star Trek: Picard, “Stardust City Rag.” We explore the controversial opening scene as well as the important roles of Bruce Maddox and Seven of Nine. We also talk about colorful and seedy Stardust City, the heartbreaking reunion of Raffi and her son, and where Dr. Agnes Jurati's goes after a big change for her character. Absolute Candor. Star Trek: Picard has shown us a wider variety of Romulans than previous series. We've seen Romulans inspired by The Original Series, The Next Generation era, and Star Trek (2009). We've also been introduced to previously unknown aspects of Romulan society, such as the secretive Zhat Vash. In “Absolute Candor,” another fascinating part of Romulan society comes to light: the Qowat Milat, a sect of women warrior nuns who have pledged to tell the truth at all times. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss the fourth episode of Star Trek: Picard, “Absolute Candor.” We explore the introduction of Elnor, a Romulan who has been cared for and trained by the Qowat Milat on the planet Vashti. We discuss the refugees living there and how their relationship with Picard has deteriorated over the past 14 years. And we talk about life aboard the La Sirena, the battle with an Original Series-era Romulan Bird-of-Prey, the evolution of the Narek–Soji story, and the much-anticipated return of Seven of Nine. The End Is the Beginning. Starfleet officers have been an essential part of every incarnation of Star Trek—until Star Trek: Picard. Instead of captains, commanders, lieutenants, and ensigns, Picard brings us ex-Starfleet officers, Romulans, and androids to construct a narrative more focused on life outside Starfleet. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss the third episode of Star Trek: Picard, “The End Is the Beginning.” We explore the complex interaction between Picard and his former first officer, Raffi Musiker, as well as the latest developments on the Artifact, the mysterious Romulan-controlled Borg cube. We also talk about the return of Hugh, the introduction of charming rogue Cristóbal Rios, and Picard's crew of former Starfleet officers who come together on Rios's ship. Maps and Legends. Romulans first appeared just eight episodes into Star Trek's existence. That story, “Balance of Terror,” aired on December 15, 1966, and delivered an Original Series statement on racism and honor. It also established one of the Federation's oldest enemies. More than 22 years later, on May 8, 1989, another enemy—the Borg—made its first appearance in the second-season Next Generation episode “Q Who.” Now, some 31 years after that, the two have come together to form the central plot of Star Trek: Picard. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss the second episode of Star Trek: Picard “Maps and Legends,” as we explore Romulan culture and the Artifact—a derelict Borg cube that has been severed from the Collective and turned into a Romulan reclamation facility. We also talk about the attack on Mars, Picard's tense meeting with Admiral Clancy, the relationship between Narek and Soji, just what Commodore Oh is up to, and our predictions for upcoming episodes. Children of Mars. Throughout its long and storied history, Star Trek has tended to focus on the lives and adventures of Starfleet officers. Civilians have rarely been seen. Star Trek: Picard is set to change that with the return of The Next Generation's famous captain, now retired from Starfleet. Jean-Luc will once again play an important role in the late 24th century, but this time as a civilian. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi discuss “Children of Mars,” the sixth episode of the second season of Star Trek: Short Treks. We discuss how this story serves as a lead-in to Star Trek: Picard, the very important role that music plays in this short, the difficult topic of bullying, Kima and Lil's journey from conflict to understanding, who the rogue synths may be, and our predictions for what we will see in the first episode the highly anticipated series. Pit bulls, with Sara Ondrako. Star Trek, and the people associated with it, have often advocated for political and social causes. Sir Patrick Stewart is no exception. He has championed LGBTQ equality, women's rights, and a number of anti-domestic violence campaigns. In recent years, he has also turned his attention to fostering dogs—particularly pit bulls. This inspired the writers of Star Trek: Picard to include a pit bull named Number One in the show. In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi welcome Sara Ondrako, founder and CEO of the American Pit Bull Foundation (APBF). We discuss common misconceptions about pit bulls, what the inclusion of a pit bull in Star Trek: Picard may mean for public perception of the breed, and the APBF's education, advocacy, and outreach programs. Logan and Picard. Star Trek—and its actors—don't exist in a vacuum; the cinematic and television styles of the time are reflected in its storytelling. Star Trek: Discovery has been darker than most previous series, and it sounds like Star Trek: Picard will have its difficult moments as well. In 2017, James Mangold's film Logan, set in the world of the X-Men, changed expectations of what a comic book movie could be. It also gave audiences a conclusion to the story of Patrick Stewart's Professor X. Will Picard follow in Logan's footsteps? In this episode of The Line, hosts Brandon-Shea Mutala, Justin Oser, and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi chat with Mike Schindler about Logan. Did the prospect of a satisfying conclusion to the story influence Patrick Stewart as he considered whether to step back into Picard's shoes? Will Star Trek: Picard receive a mature rating like Discovery and Logan? And, perhaps most importantly, should we expect an end to Picard at the end of Picard? Picard and the Romulans. At the beginning of The Next Generation, the Federation and the Romulans had barely had any contact for more than 50 years. When attacks on their outposts lead the two sides to end their silence in “The Neutral Zone,” it's Jean-Luc Picard and the Enterprise-D that encounter the Romulans first. From that point forward, Picard was an important figure in relations between these powers, and it appears he will continue in that role in Star Trek: Picard. In this episode of The Line, hosts Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi, Brandon-Shea Mutala, and Justin Oser talk about the various interactions between Picard and the Romulans. From their reintroduction in “The Neutral Zone” to the collapse of their government in Nemesis, the Romulans tend to meet the Federation with guile while Picard does his best to keep their machinations from spilling into open warfare. Picard as a Family Man. When we were first met Jean-Luc Picard in “Encounter at Farpoint,” we were told—in no uncertain terms—that he does not like children. But, over the course of the series and Picard's life, things changed. The Picard we saw in Generations seemed to long for a family and the comforts of a 19th-century Christmas at the vineyard. In this episode of The Line, Brandon-Shea Mutala sets out to convince his fellow co-hosts, Justin Oser and Chrissie De Clerck-Szilagyi, that Picard really is a family man—though it doesn't take a great deal of convincing. As we continue our look back on the themes in Picard's life, we consider that he really does want a family and children, but circumstances have stood in the way.
