Glass House Farms openly employed over 300 illegal aliens, including minors and individuals charged with violent crimes. Despite the clear violations of immigration and labor laws, left-wing protesters—tipped off in advance—rushed in to block ICE agents. Among them: a CSU professor who threw a tear gas canister at law enforcement. Victor Davis Hanson breaks down this incident that exposes a disturbing truth about California's political class on today's episode of “Victor Davis Hanson: I His Own Words.” “ This raid typified or exemplified or was emblematic of all the strange things that are going on with illegal immigration. First of all, this was a very liberal owner. He was a campaign donor to Gavin Newsom. Gave him over $10,000. He's given to the DNC. And yet, ICE went out there because they had news that not only were there over 350 people there who were illegally openly working in violation of immigration law, but there were minors. “ And yet, the Left can thinks that this is going to be a legitimate protest movement with popularity or favorability among the California or, indeed, the United States public. I don't think that's going to happen.”

OverviewThis newsletter issue commemorates 20 years of TechCrunch, reflecting on its landmark influence in shaping the startup ecosystem and tech journalism since its launch in 2005. Beyond nostalgia, the content reveals key ongoing shifts in technology, venture capital, AI innovation, and market dynamics that continue to define the industry's present and future.Listeners will gain perspective on how TechCrunch grew from a simple Web 2.0 weblog to a foundational startup network hub, alongside insights into current critical trends such as AI's evolving role in venture capital and software development, Apple's design and AI strategy, evolving IPO markets, and debates around AI ethics. The combination of historical context and forward-looking analysis makes this a compelling episode for anyone interested in the tech industry's trajectory.Key Trend 1: The Enduring Influence and Evolution of TechCrunch as a Startup NetworkTechCrunch's founding vision was not only to report new Web 2.0 companies but to serve as a connective platform for entrepreneurs, investors, and innovators globally. It emerged as the definitive startup network akin to how Facebook shaped social networks, fundamentally influencing tech culture, funding, and ecosystem formation.Today, TechCrunch remains a vital resource, expanding its global footprint with strategic partnerships and deeper engagement in key startup hubs like Europe.Key Trend 2: AI's Growing Impact on Venture Capital, Software Development, and Industry StructureAI continues to reshape venture capital with strong focus on B2B operational tooling, platform/API-first startups, and developer-centric innovation.Large models and AI coding tools (e.g., vibe coding, integration in Xcode) signal a shift towards AI-assisted software creation workflows. However, challenges remain in reasoning capabilities of AI models, skeptical internal debates on AI safety, and ethical implications within leading tech firms.Strategic investments and valuation surges of AI companies, such as Anysphere's rapid growth and Meta's big bet on Scale AI, highlight intense competition for AI supremacy.Key Trend 3: The Resurgence of Public Markets and Shifting Investment Dynamics2025 has marked a reopening of the IPO window, especially favoring growth-stage B2B SaaS companies and innovative tech firms with strong fundamentals.High-profile IPOs like Circle and CoreWeave demonstrate renewed investor appetite, with smaller deals sometimes outperforming large ones.Secondary markets in venture capital are becoming primary liquidity sources, with record transaction volumes and large funds specializing in venture secondaries addressing liquidity constraints.AI and defense tech sectors continue attracting major funding rounds and valuations, underpinning strategic industry shifts.Apple's new “Liquid Glass” design language and UI changes blur lines between iPad and Mac, signaling acknowledgment of evolving user expectations.AI-driven interfaces are moving beyond traditional input methods to embrace natural language, voice commands, and conversational experience.Voice AI technologies, such as “Voice in a Box” and true speech-to-speech models that incorporate prosody and emotion, are poised to revolutionize both consumer and enterprise interfaces. The future of devices will increasingly be defined by AI assistance quality rather than hardware aesthetics, with “legacy” hardware becoming less relevant.Key Trend 5: Ethical, Social, and Political Implications of AI and Tech PlatformsMajor tech companies wrestle internally with AI safety, privacy risks, and ethical governance amid fierce innovation pressures.AI's societal impact carries dual potentials for utopia or dystopia, prompting calls for governance frameworks balancing innovation with responsibility.Social media platform changes, such as X's transformation and decentralized alternatives like Bluesky, reveal ongoing tensions in moderation, community cohesion, and political discourse.Criticism of Big Tech growth focus and user experience degradation shows persistent cultural dissatisfaction despite transformative potential.Discussion QuestionsHow has TechCrunch's role as a startup network reshaped the venture capital ecosystem compared to traditional tech media? What lessons does this hold for emerging platforms today?Given the dominance of B2B and automation-focused AI startups in YC's recent accelerator cohorts, what does this suggest about the future directions of AI entrepreneurship versus consumer applications?Apple is pushing hard on design and controlled AI integration, while Meta invests heavily in superintelligence labs—how do these divergent strategies reflect different visions of AI's role in society and technology? What are the implications of the IPO resurgence and growing secondary markets for startup founders, investors, and public market investors in the current economic cycle? Does this signal a sustainable tech market rebound or potential volatility? With ethical concerns rising within companies like Apple and voices like Vinod Khosla warning of AI's societal risks, what governance or regulatory frameworks should be prioritized to ensure safe and equitable AI development? How do changes in social media dynamics—such as the rise of decentralized platforms like Bluesky and the transformation of X under Musk—impact political communication and community building in the digital age? What does the evolution of voice AI and UI convergence (e.g., iPadOS blending with macOS, ‘vibe coding' tools) mean for how individuals will interact with technology in the near future? Could these trends reduce technical barriers or introduce new challenges?Closing SegmentTechCrunch's 20-year journey exemplifies the power of dedicated media to build ecosystems and influence innovation rhythms. As we stand on the threshold of AI-driven transformation, the themes resonate: human connection remains central even as machines advance; technology for good requires intention amid rapid change; and markets and devices evolve to meet new realities while grappling with legacy and complexity. Our final thought: The future will not be defined solely by the most advanced algorithms or sleekest designs, but by how well the industry balances innovation, ethics, human values, and global inclusion to craft a truly transformative technology landscape. Gene Tunny and John Humphreys dissect the causes behind Australia's productivity slump, analysing recent GDP data, labour market policies, and regulatory constraints. They debate whether tax cuts should precede spending cuts and question the effectiveness of central planning and government intervention (i.e. ‘picking winners') in driving innovation. John is Chief Economist at the Australian Taxpayers' Alliance (ATA). Former Royal Marine and war correspondent James Glancy joins The Winston Marshall Show to expose the forgotten frontlines in the global war against the West—from the collapse of South Africa to the decline of Britain itself.Glancy paints a stark picture of South Africa's state failure: rampant corruption, electricity blackouts, water scarcity, violent crime, and a government captured by radical Marxist factions. He warns of the Chinese Communist Party's growing grip on African nations through arms deals, infrastructure control, and soft power dominance. But the rot isn't limited to the Global South.Turning to the UK, Glancy sounds the alarm on the surge in illegal small boat crossings across the Channel—highlighting how Britain's borders are no longer secure, and its military forces, once the pride of the West, are being hollowed out by budget cuts, political cowardice, and institutional decay. We explore how both nations—one emerging, the other formerly imperial—are now plagued by similar crises: elite complacency, ideological capture, and the erosion of national identity. All this—CCP power plays, Britain's vanishing navy, border chaos, racial politics, and the silent unravelling of Western civilisation…Watch more of James HERE: https://www.youtube.com/@UCXQDiBz2AxH3HzuIT09g9FA -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------To see more exclusive content and interviews consider subscribing to my substack here: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------FOLLOW ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA:Substack: https://www.winstonmarshall.co.uk/X: https://twitter.com/mrwinmarshallInsta: https://www.instagram.com/winstonmarshallLinktree: https://linktr.ee/winstonmarshall----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Chapters 1:44 James Glancy's Military Background and Early Career7:32 Tours in Afghanistan and the Impact of Conflict 13:21 Strategic Defence Review and British Military Decline 37:33 Chagos Island and British Foreign Policy 1:01:34 British Military Role in Channel Crossings1:08:32 South African Farm Attacks and Racial Incitement 1:11:34 White Farmers' Safety and Media Representation 1:18:59 Complexities of Race Relations and Farming Life 1:22:20 Economic and Social Impact of Farming1:24:12 Refugee Status and Political Implications 1:30:46 Conclusion and Future Plans Hosted on Acast. My guest on this episode of the podcast is eminent couples therapist Terry Real, who is the author of various bestselling books on relationships and a great audio-only book, Fierce Intimacy, that I recommend to people all the time if they want a highly efficient rhetorical punch to the gut to change their lives for the better.Terry was also, briefly, my couples therapist. I wrote about this at great length in The New York Times Magazine, and then wrote a little bit more about it here on the Substack. He did eight sessions with my wife and me, all of which were recorded and shared with us, and recently dropped in on our regularly scheduled session with Desirae Ysasi, a close colleague of his to whom he referred us after our course of therapy with him was done. You don't have to read either of these pieces to enjoy this conversation, but reading them in advance will enrich your experience of the conversation, because you'll have a better sense of why I lead Terry in the particular directions that I do. I'm a skeptic of self-help literature, in general, but I suspend my skepticism in Terry's case. I think his way of thinking about relationships, and through them about individual virtue, bypasses a lot of the traps that we're stuck in when it comes to both politics and psychology. On issues around masculinity, in particular, he points toward a way forward for men that avoids the pitfalls of traditional right-coded masculinity and the inadequacies of feminist anti-masculinity. He gives us a way to be powerful and loving, feminist and strong, at the same time. That's some of what we talk about in the conversation. We also talk about politics, about different therapeutic strategies for working with “blatant” and “latent” partners in a relationship, and plenty more. -DanShow notes from AI:00:00 Introduction and Welcome00:31 Terry Real's Background and Work01:03 Male Depression and Boyhood Trauma03:45 Relational Life Therapy (RLT) Origins05:35 Therapeutic Leverage in Couples Therapy08:56 Phases of Relational Life Therapy12:12 Patriarchy and Its Impact on Therapy15:46 Confronting Grandiosity in Therapy30:22 Challenges in Addressing Male Depression35:11 Ecological Wisdom and Relational Technology35:40 Teaching Relationship Skills with Humility36:05 Confronting Criticism and Gender Dynamics40:50 Empowerment Strategies for Latents and Blatants48:43 Political Implications of Relational Wisdom56:43 The Balance of Power and Love in Politics01:07:50 Sexual Dynamics and Relational Flexibility01:10:22 The Wisdom of Knowing the Right Moment Get full access to Eminent Americans at danieloppenheimer.substack.com/subscribe

In this episode of Uncommon Sense with Ginny Robinson, I'm giving my take (to the best of my ability—because I'm not a tariff expert and neither are most of the people chiming in right now) on Trump's gutsy new tariff move. It's the one that's got half the country cheering and the other half clutching their pearls. While the media yells “economic suicide,” I'm here to suggest that this strategy might actually work—but not overnight. We'll talk about the possibility of long-term gain, the reality of short-term discomfort, and the cultural obsession with instant results when what's often required is patience. I will also go over our collective short attention spans and why longer attention spans are needed for understanding complex issues like this. Every answer won't fit in a 15 second soundbite. At the end of the day, we'll have to pray, wait, and see. In this episode of Passing Judgment, Jessica examines a pivotal voting rights case before the Supreme Court concerning Louisiana's congressional district lines. The case touches on the conflict between the Voting Rights Act and the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause. Jessica reviews the legal arguments, reflects on past decisions like Shelby County, and explores the case's broader implications. Here are three key takeaways you don't want to miss:Voting Rights Act and Supreme Court Case: Jessica Levinson delves into a Supreme Court case concerning the Voting Rights Act, highlighting a challenge over Louisiana's congressional districting. The essential question is whether the state violated the Act by diluting voting power or violated the Fourteenth Amendment by using race excessively in district creation.Louisiana District Lines Controversy: After the census, Louisiana's district lines came under scrutiny for having only one majority minority district, leading to lawsuits. The state later redrew the map to include two majority minority districts, sparking a new suit from non-African American voters claiming the excessive use of race in drawing these lines.Fourteenth Amendment and Equal Protection Clause: The tension between complying with the Voting Rights Act and the constraints of the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause is a major theme. The conversation touches on recent affirmative action cases, emphasizing the court's perspective that race should not be the predominant factor.Follow Our Host and Guest: @LevinsonJessica
In this episode of Crazy Wisdom, host Stewart Alsop talks with Rosario Parlanti, a longtime crypto investor and real estate attorney, about the shifting landscape of decentralization, AI, and finance. They explore the power struggles between centralized and decentralized systems, the role of AI agents in finance and infrastructure, and the legal gray areas emerging around autonomous technology. Rosario shares insights on trusted execution environments, token incentives, and how projects like Phala Network are building decentralized cloud computing. They also discuss the changing narrative around Bitcoin, the potential for AI-driven financial autonomy, and the future of censorship-resistant platforms. Rosario Parlanti explains that decentralization doesn't mean eliminating central hubs entirely, but rather reducing choke points where power is overly concentrated. Whether in finance, cloud computing, or governance, every system faces forces pushing toward centralization for efficiency and control, while counterforces work to redistribute power and increase resilience.Trusted execution environments (TEE) are crucial for decentralized cloud computing. Rosario highlights how Phala Network uses TEEs, a hardware-based security measure that isolates sensitive data from external access. This ensures that decentralized cloud services can operate securely, preventing unauthorized access while allowing independent providers to host data and run applications outside the control of major corporations like Amazon and Google.AI agents will need decentralized infrastructure to function autonomously. The conversation touches on the growing power of AI-driven autonomous agents, which can execute financial trades, conduct research, and even generate content. However, running such agents on centralized cloud providers like AWS could create regulatory and operational risks. Decentralized cloud networks like Phala offer a way for these agents to operate freely, without interference from governments or corporations.Regulatory arbitrage will shape the future of AI and crypto. Rosario describes how businesses and individuals are already leveraging jurisdiction shopping—structuring AI entities or financial operations in countries with more favorable regulations. He speculates that AI agents could be housed within offshore LLCs or irrevocable trusts, creating legal distance between their creators and their actions, raising new ethical and legal challenges.Bitcoin's narrative has shifted from currency to investment asset. Originally envisioned as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system, Bitcoin has increasingly been treated as digital gold, largely due to the influence of institutional investors and regulatory frameworks like Bitcoin ETFs. Rosario argues that this shift in perception has led to Bitcoin being co-opted by the very financial institutions it was meant to disrupt. The rise of AI-driven financial autonomy could bypass traditional banking and regulation. The combination of AI, smart contracts, and decentralized finance (DeFi) could enable AI agents to conduct financial transactions without human oversight. This could range from algorithmic trading to managing business operations, potentially reducing reliance on traditional banking systems and challenging the ability of governments to enforce financial regulations. The accelerating clash between technology and governance will redefine global power structures. As AI and decentralized systems gain momentum, traditional nation-state mechanisms for controlling information, currency, and infrastructure will face unprecedented challenges. Rosario and Stewart discuss how this shift mirrors previous disruptions—such as social media's impact on information control—and speculate on whether governments will adapt, resist, or attempt to co-opt these emerging technologies.

Listener Negative Julian also picks up on the potential impact of political changes in the USA on the pricing of assistive technology. However, our main discussion today brings up the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The architect of the Act, former lawyer David Lepofsky, highlights the shortcomings in the implementation of the AODA, the barriers faced by those with disabilities in healthcare and education, and the need for stronger enforcement of accessibility standards. The discussion also emphasizes the importance of advocacy, leadership, and accountability in achieving accessibility goals, while introducing the Accessible Ontario Pledge as a new initiative to push for change. Listeners are encouraged to support accessibility advocacy efforts not just for the benefit of Ontarians, but for all Canadians and anyone who visits the province.Get in touch with Double Tap by emailing us feedback@doubletaponair.com or by call 1-877-803-4567 and leave us a voicemail.
