BOM - "Why The Best Are The Best" by Kevin Eastman

Our book this month is definitely worthy of the book of the month criteria. It's written by a gentleman who I had the honor of meeting about a month ago. The book is called, “Why the best are the best.” By Kevin Eastman. Kevin has dedicated most of his working life to the sport of basketball. The pinnacle of his career was at the top of the coaching organization for two teams in the National Basketball Association. He was the assistant coach for the Boston Celtics when they won the NBA championship in 2008. Kevin was the assistant coach and Vice President of Operations with the Los Angeles Clippers. When I spent time with Kevin Eastman I was struck by his ability to distill big ideas into very simple and clear beacons of light that can serve as a north star for those times in life when one is pulled off course. How often lengthy explanations and excuses can be cut off with a few choice words that bring the ego back to earth. Kevin is a life-long student. This is a phrase that I hear often. I suppose there are those who truly believe that they're being a student. But Kevin is a student every spare second of every day. He speaks of a work ethic that is the work ethic of champions. But it's one thing to say the words. It's quite another to truly embody those words. In Kevin's world, success lies in simplicity, confusion lies in sophistication. At the core of success are three elements: 1) the work that goes into it, 2) the mindset that must be turned into habits and 3) the execution discipline. It's not about what the words will do for you. It's about the what the words will do to you. If you're not changed by the words, then the words have no impact. The core of the book are 25 words. That's it, only 25 words. You could think of the book like a dictionary of a mere 25 words. But unlike the Oxford dictionary which takes a word and provides a couple of sentences to define that word, Kevin takes an entire chapter to define a word.

Kevin thinks that the coolest things in the world are his wife and kids. He's worked very hard to create a lifestyle that maximizes his time with them. Outside of spending time with his family, Kevin helps small businesses set up and run automated marketing campaigns. Although he advises that people create the simplest marketing system that works, his best customers tend to be people who have very complicated systems that require a lot of maintenance to keep the systems connected and working. Kevin also spent a lot of time volunteering as an analyst for a Venture capital fund as well, where he was able to connect with and witness great ideas that failed and mediocre ideas that have taken off. In Kevin's previous life, he graduated from West Point, served as a Field Artillery Officer in the U.S. Army and, spent a short tour in Iraq. He dabbled in Investment Real Estate and started a few other businesses with varying success. On today’s program, Jonah chats with an old friend who will definitely NOT polarize the Remnant audience whatsoever (If we wish hard enough then it has to come true, right?): National Review’s Kevin Williamson. Williamson is out with a new book, Big White Ghetto.  Jonah sets up Kevin for a heaping helping of rank punditry to start things off before moving into some book-talk and some eggheadery. In addition to Jonah’s efforts to make Kevin explicate his self-described political ideology (“anarcho-capitalist Eisenhower libertarian”), the two also discuss the ways in which America’s titular big white ghetto actually, well, became a ghetto, and what the solutions might be for the people who feel trapped in struggling communities. In Kevin’s mind, part of the issue is that no one in politics is comfortable saying something that is obviously true: “Cities and towns disaggregate and disincorporate over time, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. But this is also why I’m not running for office.”   Show Notes: -Kevin’s new book, definitely in the running for “Greatest Subtitle Ever” – Big White Ghetto: Dead Broke, Stone-Cold Stupid, and High on Rage in the Dank Woolly Wilds of the “Real America” -Karl Rove: This election won’t be overturned -Gangsters don’t have a retirement plan -Conrad Black’s column -Dee Dee Myers appearing generally confused -Jonah’s piece on Republicans and cities -Kevin, reporting from Eastern Kentucky -The most recent Dispatch Podcast -Eisenhower’s response to the prospect of dropping nukes on Dien Bien Phu -The glories of Taco Villa -The Remnant with John McWhorter See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the words of former FOMC Governor, Kevin Warsh, “If you’ve seen one financial crisis, you’ve seen one financial crisis”.  The uniqueness of shocks makes this so and the result is that policymakers need to constantly innovate in their response to episodes of heightened uncertainty. Now a visiting scholar at the Hoover Institute, Kevin shares with me his perspective on the pandemic of 2020, evaluating the mix of forces that brought the VIX to a new time high even as the Treasury market nearly imploded. Kevin’s experience on the FOMC during the global financial crisis has taught him lessons about the institutional realities of crisis firefighting: in the moment, a central bank may be left with few good options and be forced to use controversial measures to restore market functioning. In Kevin’s rendering, what’s more important is the set of reforms pursued by a central bank between crisis events that matters most and here the Fed may not have done enough in the decade between the GFC and the pandemic. We end on an optimistic note, with Kevin expressing confidence that the US will get it right and the dynamism that characterizes the economy will again emerge. I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange as much as I did, my conversation with Kevin Warsh.

Sales with Anja Rogan Pirc Selling is a difficult skill. Graham's career started in sales but we have Anja Rogan Pirc to tell us all about sales from her perspective. Anja is world famous because she's an international best-selling author, a public speaker and a charming person! Also, we just want to congratulate Kevin again on becoming a Grandad to baby Louis! Sending love to the family! Anja's journey to sales It started in sales door to door about 10 years ago. Anja was originally an au pair in England and she felt bored when the kids were at school or when she had the weekend off. Therefore, Anja was creating holiday and Christmas cards - being a creative soul - and sold them door to door. It was just for fun really. But, when she went home, reality sank in that she needed to either go back to university or get a job. Without a diploma, it is hard to get a job that isn't low-qualification, such as cleaning, etc. But, another option was sales and so Anja tried that, selling vacuums door to door. Though this sounds boring, Anja was excited about this product because it was a vacuum that helped people with asthma. For her, this job wasn't just about selling. It was about the product itself and being excited about it, to help her sell well. From there, Anja found other industries which she helped promote. She was present wherever she could be, helping run seminars for example. When she was behind the curtains, there were lots of opportunities to learn for free because you can see how everything is put together and managed. This grew into the position of sales manager and then sales executive within different global companies. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Sales-and-women.mp4   Value Anja keeps returning to the idea of value - it's your value that makes you stand out. In Kevin's industry, quite a lot of the leaders - indeed, almost all - will be male. So, a stand-out woman will stand out because of her extra value. Selling in general comes down to the idea of an attractive value proposition, and it's this proposition that has to come through rather than the personalities or genders (etc) of the people selling. Graham notes that, on Anja's website, she has the sort of questions that Graham (being a fellow salesperson) knows he would have. It shows her skill because sometimes you might have had a rubbish day. One of the first questions Anja poses is: "Are your potential clients or customers currently saying no to you?" And this tunes into your struggle with sales. So, why are they saying no? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Why-are-people-saying-no.mp4   This is such a broad question because everyone has different perspectives. Some have mainframe issues, where they struggle with the product; they might not feel confident or competent enough to deliver that product. Others may simply not be able to sell right - you don't have a system and don't know what steps to take and how to take those steps so that the process feels natural and leads to an organic and certain question "when do we start?" The price won't matter because both the value and the process feels right. Some people struggle to gain converts because they are going to where they think they are needed. Now, we know that you should never go to where you are needed. You should go where you are wanted. Essentially, the reason prospects say no will not be the same for everyone. But these aspects will filter through the reasons for you personally. One of the key things to remember - no matter what we are selling - is we are selling to people. Marketers and sales people are people-people. Whatever it is that throws you off - whether it just be a bad day or a more long-term problem - Anja helps sales people look at that problem and deal with it and show how it effects prospects. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Getting-underneath-the-surface.mp4

Andy talks with former colleague and friend Kevin O’Brien, a Squadron Leader in the Royal Air Force who has an avid interest in military history and Polar exploration. Kevin’s mantra is “every day is a school day”. In this second episode  with Kevin, we hear three stories that guide and inspire how he lives into better leadership in his own way, including   (Go to 01:41) Sir Ernest Shackleton CVO OBE FRGS FRSGS was a British Antarctic Explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic. Kevin tells Shackleton’s story of fortitude, being trapped in and living on the ice for 10 months, crossing the Southern Ocean in a lifeboat and in particular highlighting Shackleton’s qualities that marked him out as an exceptional leader. This includes anecdotes about how Shackleton understood his team, broke down barriers of rank, knew how and when to inspire tired crew members in a way which didn’t draw attention to their suffering. It is a tale of an eternal optimist, a man who never lingered on things and willingly carried problems with a ‘move on’ attitude.   (Go to 09:28) Richard ‘Dick’ Winters was an officer in the US Army and was a decorated war veteran. Best known for commanding Easy Company of the 2nd Battalion 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division during WW2. His story and that of his comrades was made famous through the HBO Series ‘Band of Brothers’. Kevin shares a number of anecdotes from Dick Winters’ actions, and reflects on his ‘Leadership at the point of the bayonet’ guidance that is still used as a leadership handrail for junior commanders on the battlefield today. The assertion that mental resilience comes from physical fitness, the importance of preparation and study - mastering your craft, the vitality of the 3Cs - Courage, competence and character in developing your team by example. We also gain an insight into the importance of delegation - to increase your capacity to use your creativity/innovation to create winning plans full of imagination and agility under pressure. Humility - don’t worry about who receives the credit and finally, never, ever give up - it won’t last forever, opportunity will always crop up…   (Go to 20:03) In Kevin’s final story, he shines a light on the heroism of Gary Gordon and Randall Shughart, US special operations soldiers posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour for their actions during the Battle of Mogadishu in October 1993. Their story is known to many through the film, Black Hawk Down. Kevin tells the story of 2 experienced leaders who knew the bigger picture was grim - but saw a way to help their commander re-gain initiative and momentum. They made a decision for the bigger team. It is an exemplary anecdote of selflessness and the power of a positive culture - and a willingness to make their own fortune: their commitment to ‘leave no man behind’.

The first episode of my podcast is focused on my guest speaker and brother, Kevin Si. We have been working with each other for as long as SEO Hacker has been alive. Let's get to know more about Kevin Si, as well as his role as the COO of SEO Hacker. Kevin is the Chief Operating Officer of SEO Hacker. It is the first and only place where he has worked ever since he graduated from college. He used to be the website and development head. Nowadays, with all of his technical know-how, he is considered to be the technical expert of the company, while I oversee all of the marketing aspects. One of the notable projects that Kevin is doing right now is that he is creating a company called Tomoe where he sells bead bracelets. Now you might be wondering, what's so special about these bead bracelets that Kevin decided to start a whole business selling them, when in fact, it's something that is very accessible to everyone? It can be found in a lot of malls, and markets, and even in small corner stores more commonly known in the Philippines as Tiangge. Kevin explains his learnings from a seminar conducted by Leadership Stack, one of my recent startups, that any idea that is not physically present with you is nothing but an idea. It lingers—and oftentimes, it gets lost in translation. Kevin describes the bead bracelets he is selling as a means to symbolize these ideas. He wants to help people have the same mantra of materializing their ideas and goals. In essence, these bracelets are used in a more spiritual way as it can give you supernatural wisdom. These bracelets are made to empower people because, as Kevin believes, everyone has the ability to do so many things. It's just a matter of reminding them that they can do it. He further explains that the bead bracelets are in no way an original idea. It's easy to find the beads on the Internet. What sets Tomoe bracelets apart are the difference in combinations and the message behind them. Tomoe aims to cultivate and empower people who use these bracelets to make sure that they're reminded of what they can become. One of the few things Kevin wanted to highlight was that he and his company is looking to create a program where they ask their customers to commit to something, and they'll be asking for regular updates from them. In this age where social media has taken up a large chunk of our time, seeing influencers, and other people who flaunt their luxurious lifestyles so much can be depressing at times. A lot of people can feel helpless, but in reality, we are empowered to do so many things. Empowerment itself is an amazing concept, as long as it is done well. Going back to Kevin's position as the COO of a young tech company, he shares that his work is mainly about handling both operations and people. Operations is easy. As long as there are clear rules and regulations on how things are supposed to be done. He also notes that there is a very defined standard separating good quality, excellent work, from the bad ones. That being said, the hardest part of his job is defining which is good, and which is bad work, processes, and outputs (which is, as stated by Kevin, still fairly easy). It's a matter of reaching quotas, while also exemplifying quality work. Another point worthy of consideration is that it's actually the people in operations that make things hard because you have to motivate and encourage them. I personally make an effort to get to know them well enough to empower and encourage them. SEO Hacker is a young tech company that has a relatively young workforce of approximately 40 individuals. Being the COO of such a company is quite a unique experience. In Kevin's case, he can pretty much sum it up to be a very fun experience. Kevin Kruse is a New York Times bestselling author and entrepreneur who has a mission of reaching over 100 million leaders. He joins me on the show this week to talk about his new book, Great Leaders Have No Rules, adapting a leadership strategy in modern society and creating conversations that lead to deeper clarity and understanding about values.   Key Takeaways: [4:47] As a graduate of Rutgers University, Kevin was the first in his family to go to college. He is originally from Orange County but his family moved out to the East Coast in his teenage years. [12:02] In using baseball as an analogy for business, shortening the season may have benefits, but it’s important to keep sight on how revenue would continue to be generated. [12:50] In this fast-paced and ever-changing society, great organizations learn to modify and adjust how they do business and engage with their customers. [14:20] The stronger the connection is internally between leaders and their team, the greater the customer experience will be. [17:21] Great leadership starts in the hiring process with the right people aligned with the company values and goals. [18:09] Kevin’s inspiration to flip the script on traditional leadership led him to write his new book, Great Leaders Have No Rules. [20:14] Every time we bump into a rule, it shorts us of making a decision and makes us feel less involved. [22:04] Rules crowd out relationships. [24:04] Rules start from a good place, but over time, when the rule is broken or unmet, it causes defensiveness and dishonesty. [25:33] A conversation must be had about the expectations and boundaries within the rules. The more a team understands why the rules are there in the first place, the more likely they are to be compliant. [26:07] Set boundaries as a team. [26:33] When we bump into a rule it is not the end of the world but an opportunity for feedback and a teachable moment. [36:47] Constant screen time impacts our ability to be immersed in the moment and connect fully with others. In Kevin’s Chapter, “Turn off Your Smartphones,” he proposes checking it to process the information and then setting it aside. [38:59] LeadX created an experimental AI-powered executive coach who can answer questions and give action items based on leadership and management essentials. [45:55] Kevin’s goal is to work with a team and impact over 100 million leaders.   Resources: Purchase Bring Your Whole Self to Work and gain access to bonus material Mike Robbins Website Mike Robbins Podcast Mike Robbins on Facebook Mike Robbins on Twitter Mike Robbins on Instagram TED Radio Hour KevinKruse.com Adam Silver and Bill Simmons Leadx.org Great Leaders Have No Rules: Contrarian Leadership Principles to Transform Your Team and Business, by Kevin Kruse

The search for one’s true purpose in life is one of the most daunting questions we humans face – but it doesn’t have to be. Jennifer chats with Kevin Monroe, a self-described servant leader who brings his lifelong study of purpose into his work as a leadership coach and consultant, advising both individuals and companies in their search for purpose greater than themselves. How would you describe Kevin Monroe in one word? According to him, that word is “pilgrim.” Kevin tells Jennifer a little bit about how his outlook has changed throughout his life and how getting fired from his position in the church was exactly what he needed to start the next stage of his journey. After 10 years in telecommunications sales and marketing, and after finding out some hard truths about his long-coveted dream job, Kevin left to join a high-tech startup with some friends. Their timing wasn’t so great; as the dot-com bubble burst in 2001, the company dissolved and Kevin was brought back to that nagging question of purpose staring him in the face. Corporate America is a beast in its own right. Uninterested in returning to the predictable machinations of another corporate position, Kevin took a hard look at what success meant for him and where true fulfillment lay on his path, ultimately moving on to the non-profit sector. The tale of a short-lived career in the non-profit sector is, unfortunately, a dime a dozen. Kevin’s experience was no exception. After losing his job, the next step was a no-brainer: time to start a business. Jennifer asks Kevin about founding X Factor Consulting, LLC and the early days of being out on his own. Unearthing your purpose isn’t just about reaching a destination at the end of a path but navigating a winding road, its direction only visible a few steps ahead. After Kevin landed some clients and got things working smoothly, the question of purpose returned. Jennifer asks Kevin about how he used to think about his purpose and how it has changed over time. In Kevin’s view, purpose is not singular but is multidimensional and multifaceted; he talks about the importance of his family when it comes to purpose and the primacy of relationships. The times have changed. The corporations of yesteryear are catching up to the socially minded ethos of the non-profit sector. Kevin talks about how today’s conversations around balancing profit-making and social good are in line with the thread of servant leadership that he seems to have been following all along. Jennifer asks Kevin about what servant leadership is to him. For many doers and thinkers, the hyper-focus upon the individual leader is counterintuitive. Kevin talks about other-centered leadership, relaying a story about visiting the corporate headquarters of Chick-fil-a and the servant leadership approach of Southwest Airlines. How does one become a servant leader? Jennifer asks Kevin if people are born as servant leaders and if one can learn to shift their way of thinking. According to Kevin, “Little things matter most. And we never know what little thing is going to matter most to whom when.” Sometimes a warm greeting and a handshake can do amazing things. Both Kevin and Jennifer are walking proof that you can change the way you think about leadership step by step, throughout your life. Listen to them tell some stories about leadership experiences in their careers. Kevin also provides insight into the power of servant leadership and why it’s so much simpler and intuitive than it often sounds. Between his podcast – called the Higher Purpose podcast – and his consulting and facilitation work, Kevin’s focus on purpose is driven by the importance of self-driven discovery. There is no universal training program for servant leadership because everyone’s story is different. What Kevin tries to do is create the ideal conditions for companies and organizations to connect with their own story on a deeper level in order to discover, be inspired by and effectively lead with their newfound purpose. While Kevin mostly works with larger companies, he talks about some tools and resources for helping individuals. You can find some of these resources in the links below! So what’s next for Kevin Monroe? Kevin gives us some details about a new interview segment on the Higher Purpose podcast called Profiles of Purpose and drops a few juicy takeaways in the form of some excellent quotes, credited and original: “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” – Jim Elliott “Purpose thrives in community, but starves in isolation.” – Kevin Monroe Links and Resources: Kevin Monroe Website LinkedIn Twitter Facebook Higher Purpose podcast Purpose Manifesto Profiles of Purpose Mike Kim Website Books (affiliate links): Firms of Endearment: How World-Class Companies Profit from Passion and Purpose Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit Are you struggling with developing your personal brand? Kevin Donlin (https://www.linkedin.com/in/donlin) is our special guest on today's episode of Traffic and Leads Podcast (http://trafficandleadspodcast.com/best-offline-marketing-strategies/). Kevin created Client Cloning Systems (https://clientcloningsystems.com/) to help entrepreneurs and businesses alike get more clients that mirror the best clients they’ve already got. He is an online and offline marketer, and he’s got the best strategies in order to keep you on top of your marketing game. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: * Who Kevin is, and why he thinks online marketing is just as important as offline marketing. In his words, they have to work together in order to have a cohesive marketing plan and to get the most clients you possibly can. * From there, we talk about how Kevin “invented” the method of the “printed e-mail”. In a sense, it’s exactly what it sounds like—it’s a printed off version of an e-mail that you’ve already send, or are planning on sending, and you send the hard copy to your prospects. Kevin himself says he sends out new brand ideas every month on how to take marketing to the next level. Commitment! * Kevin gives me the choice of letting him explain his top 3 marketing tools: The Sales Focus Finder, the One Thing Scorecard, and The Sales Conversation starter. We start with the Sales Conversation starter, in which Kevin explains the importance of making cold (and warm) phone calls to people who will listen, as it’s a top way to increase your sales in a quick and efficient manner. * On average, Kevin says that calling people first thing in the morning warrants a 20 - 50% success in reaching them. If you can generate a list of 25 to 50 phone calls of people you already have a relationship with, you’re halfway to boosting your sales! * In the end, when the sales conversation starts, you need to have three things—you need to have a reason to call, you need to have something to say, and you need to have the desired outcome. In Kevin’s words, “you win some, you learn some”, and there’s nothing to be lost by making these calls in the first place. * Lastly, we touch upon the One Thing Scorecard, in which Kevin explains his method of getting something done at least once a day. With the motivation to better the business by doing something seemingly small for an extended period of time, you’re building yourself—and the business—up for something bigger and better. It’s well worth it in the end!

Vicky interviews Kevin Whitehouse, an author, speaker, and most importantly an accountant. Before you scrunch your nose up and think all accountants are crooked, hopefully this episode will teach you a thing or two as to why you should take charge of your numbers and hire a good accountant to help you keep your financials in check. In Kevin’s 30+ years of doing this, he’s noticed a common theme; 90% of small business owners simply do not want to deal with their finances, and it ends up costing them thousands (if not more) in wasted profit. On the show, Kevin explains how you can literally double your profits, just by taking a look at your numbers.    Key Takeaways: [1:15] What does Kevin do for his clients? [2:05] Aside from paying your taxes and not going to jail, why is it important to know your numbers? [6:15] Vicky used to hate numbers. Ugh! [6:35] How does Kevin help his clients make a real financial difference? [10:55] Percentages are your best friend! [14:30] When you know your numbers inside and out, you can find ways to literally double your profits. [18:00] Lately, Kevin has been working with owners who are running pay-per-click campaigns. By running simple tests, you can develop your own marketing budget and estimate how much it costs to acquire a sale. [22:00] It might be nerdy, but Kevin swears that budget forecasting is really fun stuff. [24:35] The good news is we live in a time where computers can do a lot of our calculations automatically. Kashflow is an excellent tool business owners can use to help them with their numbers. [27:50] How many small business owners actually really understand their numbers? [28:30] Do not skimp on the accounting side of the business. Hire a good accountant! [32:35] You’re in business to make money, so doesn’t it make sense to take your money seriously?   Mentioned in This Episode: Businessforsuperheroes.com Businessforsuperheroes.com/inner-circle Businessforsuperheroes.com/borrow-my-brain Kashflow Prime Entry Kashflow.expert
