There is no doubt that societies are more divided and polarized than ever before. So many of us are torn when it comes to dealing with these hate-filled, angry times. While there are so many institutional approaches to tackling issues of diversity and inclusion, today, Kevin wants to offer a different approach; that of learning your heart story. This is the first of a three-part series around diversity and inclusion. By taking a heart-led approach, you have to dig deep within. What is it that your heart is telling you if you are truly willing to listen? Where are your blind spots? Where do you still need to grow, and what are your strengths? Being a great leader means being willing to do some self-reflection, and while this is not easy, it has to be done. We cannot shy away from asking ourselves the difficult questions that will allow us to move forward and be the kind, caring changemakers we need in this world. Key Points From This Episode:Being a great leader starts with doing internal work before anything else. There are so many institutional approaches to tackle diversity and inclusion, but we are starting with a heart solution.Ask yourself questions to interrogate how you view inclusion and diversity. Why Kevin still fundamentally believes that people are inherently good. What Kevin learned about acceptance growing up in a diverse neighborhood. How your heart space links to leadership; you are self-aware and walk the talk. What would happen if we were all ruthlessly honest and kind to ourselves?Kevin’s definition of grace: accepting transgressions of others. What you can do to contribute to making the world a less hateful place. Kevin is a game theorist, philosopher, and author who studies the evolution of language and the mathematics of social behavior. In this episode, we have an entertaining and engaging conversation about game theory. CONNECT WITH KEVIN ONLINE LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevinzollman/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/KevinZollman QUOTES [00:14:56] "The idea here is that when we have situations where we can cooperate for mutual benefit, that is if we all wear masks, we're cooperating, we're helping one another. " [00:17:23] "For a game to be a zero sum game, it needs to be that if one person wins, someone else loses." [00:26:47] "One of the things game theorists know is: it's important to make it smaller rather than bigger. Because the bigger it is, the more the easier it is to sneak under the radar and cheat. And you want to create opportunity for accountability [00:32:40] "Talking to one another is another example of a game. Especially when we're worried about circumstances where we might have an incentive to be dishonest or at least not fully honest." [00:49:36] "Game theory always says you have to think about what it is the other person doing, and what are their incentives, and what are they thinking about. Because if you misunderstand what they're doing because you think that they have a different set of incentives, then you can make mistakes." [00:59:27] "What game theory helps you to do is: it helps to ask what are the things you need to think about?" [01:02:43] "A game theorist would say the first thing you've got to do, is figure out what they value. Because you can't make any predictions about what they're going to do until you know what they want." In the late 2000s, star baseball player Kevin Jordan was fully-committed to preparing for his baseball career either in the pros or at college in Wake Forest. However, right before his senior season started Kevin could feel something was off. His health was declining, his stamina lacking, and after a number of tests, Kevin was diagnosed with ANCA vasculitis. It caused one of his kidneys to function at 8% and he would need a new one fast. To go from a professional hopeful to having his entire career, and even his life, in jeopardy, Kevin still committed to go to Wake Forest and figure out a solution. Despite having lost 40lb of muscle, being hours from home, and a freshman on such a large campus, Kevin persisted. That dedication and devotion to being his best was one of the reasons Wake Forest was so excited to recruit Kevin in the first place. What Kevin needed now though, was a new kidney and everyone around him was coming up as a non-match. That is, until his head coach, Tom Walter, was tested. We’ll let them tell their story, but know that Kevin and Tom’s story has been told countless times across many platforms. What’s different now is that they are taking their story and turning it into a movement called Get in the Game. Their aim is to educate, inspire, and empower a generation of young people to take action in their homes, schools, and communities. Athletic Brewing has partnered with Get in the Game to help bring about their vision where all races, creeds, income levels, and gender identities have equal opportunities and view the world with hope and endless possibility. Key Points From This Episode What brought Kevin to the Vue ecosystem, after struggling with the “magic” of React. What Kevin’s day-to-day is like at Vonage when it comes to organizing events. Shifting to virtual conferences and events, and how Kevin’s team has gone on to help others. Some of the software Kevin has used for virtual conferences, like Remo and StreamYard. Women of React was the first remote conference Kevin organized, and he learned a lot! Event organizing versus remote conferencing – how Kevin started his career and what he thinks is lost when an event goes virtual. Typical things Kevin sees conference organizers get wrong, from access points and WiFi to food, networking, and plants in the audience. Scheduling – planning breaks, based on content of the conference, facilities, and buffer time. It’s your responsibility as an event organizer to make sure that speakers feel respected. When it comes to Q&A sessions, Kevin has some tips fro making sure it’s moderated well. Kevin asks the panel what makes an event good for them as attendees – Ari says the hallway track or time between talks is vital. Ben says he appreciates guidance for newer attendees on after parties and dinners, etc. Tessa’s feedback includes structured activities for attendees to mingle, like bowling. A firm structure for events and locations seems like a low barrier to entry, but it’s crucial. Over-communicating is critical! Your audience needs to know if things in the program change. Single-track versus multi-track conferences – it depends what you’re trying to achieve. Selecting speakers – Kevin reacts to Ben’s story of a conference with a blind CFP survey. Kevin talks about BarCamp London and the simple concept of an unconference. The CFP or talk selection process, and Kevin’s take on it for an event like You Got This. Keynote spots are a way to course-correct if your lineup isn’t diverse or goes off the rails. The value of a mentorship program for first-time speakers to encourage and support them. In this episode I speak with Terry Thayer about his process towards prosperity. Terry at the time of this podcast is in the middle of a 4 month "life" vacation (you will get this when you hear the first few minutes), inside Mexico -- all while his businesses are still operating. He is a believer in setting a plan and making it happen, with such a strong background in Real Estate, Terry is huge on building the correct systems in your business, the correct team, and allowing yourself to do what you love. For Terry it is traveling and spending time wit his family.I almost names this episode "What Kevin harts, Jeff Bezos and Terry Thayer have in common" because I noticed has Terry spoke, it reminded me of interviews and the mindset of not only myself but some very high performers.Links Mentioned:www.reisift.ioContact Terry:https://www.facebook.com/terrydthayerii@TerryThayerii
We are hiring right now specifically a web designer, a salesperson, and a few other roles in the near future. We recently did a round of founders interviews which basically means that the team has already vetted the candidate and then the person moves onto Erik and Kevin in the interview process. We first do a phone screening that takes about 15 minutes and if they pass that, they have an interview with the hiring manager who can then bring on other members of their team. Once they pass that step, there are about 3 remaining candidates that get moved on to the founders' interview. By this point, the hiring manager has already confirmed that this person can do the job at hand. What Kevin and Erik are interviewing for is fit. Do they exhibit the core values that we hold? Last week Kevin and Erik had 5 interviews and it ended up being quite tiring. By the end of it, both Erik and Kevin felt like they hadn't accomplished a lot. But what they did that day was interview the next person that might come onto the team. That is very important. So although they didn't get a lot of tasks done that day, they picked who they thought could do the best job and advanced the company significantly by identifying who the next person coming into the company would be. — Erik J. Finding your investment niche and developing the right mindset are critical and foundational steps in establishing a thriving business. Today’s guests are Adam Ulery and Kevin Galang, the voices behind the Tech Guys Who Invest podcast, who provide insights into their investment niches. We open the conversation by exploring why Adam and Kevin got into investing, even though both of their backgrounds told them that you make money by working for someone else. Kevin and Adam discuss how investing leads to financial security, especially if you establish multiple streams of passive income. They then explain how different mindsets influence how you invest, and why you should be guided by math and not emotion. We focus on the importance of aligning an abundance, investor, and growth mindset to go further and faster in your career, along with helping you to grow as a person. Are your employees’ networks as secure as the office? If not, here’s a new crisis consideration: In a pandemic... Cyber hygiene could matter as much as hand hygiene. At least, if you don’t want to suffer breaches on top of everything else this COVID-19 has hurled upon us. On the latest podcast, I caught up with Kevin Powers, Founding Director, MS in Cybersecurity Policy & Governance at Boston College. Kevin is an expert on all things cybersecurity. And he’s seen some troubling things in this crisis. Selling at the bottom of the market in real estate can get you into a lot of trouble, but as long as you have enough reserves to ride things out, you can come out the other end smiling. Today’s guest, Kevin Sharkey, rode out the last downturn and he joins us to talk about house hacking and passive investing in the current one. Kevin is a TV executive who began house hacking in 2003 and is now a partner in two out of state multifamily properties totaling 396 doors. We kick things off chatting to Kevin about his road into real estate beginning when that first value add a property in Philadelphia fell into his lap in 2003. Without knowing what he was getting himself into, Kevin bought a second house hack in Florida at the top of the market in 2006, but he managed to hold onto it right through the downturn. He shares the lessons he learned from this and we talk opportunities for sweeping up deals in downturns and the importance of resisting selling at the bottom of a market. We turn our attention to syndications next and talk to Kevin about what he likes to look for in syndicators and deals before investing, specifically at a time like this. From there, we hear about some hesitations Kevin initially had around passive investing coming from his house hacking background where he was in full control, and how he overcame them. Wrapping up for the day, we talk to Kevin about the value of networking and focus, and what he would have done differently in 2008 if he could wind back the clock. Note: This podcast was recorded in early February, 2020 - before Covid-19 social distancing measures went into place. In this episode of the Backpacking Light Podcast, Ryan and Andrew talk about load hauling - how to go as light as possible when the nature of your trip (packrafting, desert water carries, family backpacking, winter travel, etc.) requires specialized and (often) heavy gear. After catching up (Ryan is running some cool experiments) the guys talk gear: packs, footwear, and other considerations for when the pack weight starts to creep up. After that they move into a discussion of skills that can lighten up a trip, even when the equipment is heavy. Ryan updates the listeners on cool new stuff going on at BPL, and Andrew talks about his new favorite thing - a new pair of ultralight running shoes. The episode wraps with an interview of Kevin Timm, owner and founder of Seek Outside. In a wide-ranging discussion, Kevin and Andrew talk about: Seek Outside’s story and gear design aesthetic What Kevin values in a piece of gear Kevin’s advice to budding outdoorsy industry entrepreneurs Lessons learned The overlap between hunters and backpackers Conservation and public lands use And more!
