Send us a textA roster full of talent won't save a season if communication fractures. We sat down with Travis Davidson from Team Sports Consulting Group to unpack how a simple five‑minute survey can transform culture, reveal real leaders, and help coaches read stress before it derails a game. From high school diamonds to College World Series runs, Travis shows how relational science turns “culture” from a buzzword into a repeatable system you can coach. We dig into the four core traits that shape how players think, lead, and learn—and how those patterns show up under pressure. You'll hear how to stop forcing your best hitter into a role he hates, use side‑by‑side profiles to resolve coach–player conflicts, and set your team's environment on purpose: locker pods, bus assignments, even hotel routines that preserve energy for the moments that decide seasons. Catchers get a special spotlight as we explore pitcher–catcher scans that equip them to spot backup styles, slow the game down, and anchor tempo when the count and crowd tilt against you.Travis also challenges a myth: there's no single personality that makes a great coach. The real separator is self‑awareness. Whether you lean gut or analytics, the edge comes from knowing your style, speaking in each player's language, and building a shared map of how your team works. With clear pricing designed for high schools and a no‑risk offer for head coaches, the path from guesswork to clarity is closer than you think.Ready to turn communication into a competitive advantage? Listen now, claim the free head coach scan, and share this with a staff member who picks captains. Leading with Hospitality is Not Going to Be Easy... But it will be Effective What does it truly mean to lead with heart? This week on A New Direction with Coach Jay Izso, we welcome Taylor Scott, author of Lead with Hospitality: Be Human. Emotionally Connect. Serve Selflessly. In a world where leadership often gets reduced to strategy, numbers, and bottom lines, Taylor brings us back to the core truth: people want to feel valued, cared for, and connected. Get ready for an eye-opening conversation that challenges the way you see leadership in both life and business. Leadership isn't just about giving orders—it's about creating emotional connections that inspire others to give their best. Taylor has spent his career developing a framework where hospitality becomes more than customer service—it becomes a leadership philosophy. Together, we'll explore how empathy, authenticity, and service can transform not just teams and organizations, but entire cultures. If you've ever wondered why some leaders inspire loyalty while others struggle to keep people engaged, this is your chance to find out. In this episode, you'll discover practical strategies for leading with kindness without sacrificing results. From building trust to serving selflessly, Taylor reveals why putting people first always leads to stronger performance. Expect stories, insights, and actionable takeaways that will make you rethink how you lead at work, at home, and in your community. Leadership doesn't have to be complicated—it just has to be human.  It must be contained within hospitality. So join us as we uncover how to Lead with Hospitality. And if you can't make it live, don't worry—the podcast will be available on all major platforms. Whether you're a business owner, a team leader, or simply someone who wants to positively influence the people around you, this is one conversation you won't want to miss. Taylor Scott's book, "Lead with Hospitality: Be Human. Emotionally Connect. Serve Selflessly" is a powerhouse of a book that digs deep into an area that most leadership books will delve into, and that is leading with hospitality.  Whatever business you think you are in, the fact is we are all in the hospitality business. If you are like me you may be thinking, well I have to deal with customers so, maybe my business is in the hospitality business.  But what you may not be thinking is that hospitality starts with your people.  Are your people being treated with hospitality? Taylor sees for areas and they are in order in order to lead with hospitality, Connect, Serve, Engage, and Inspire.  Let's think about this for a minute.  How can we truly have the most productive employees and people if we do not see the importance of connection.  And if we are connected to them in a welcoming way, are we serving them?  And if we are truly going to serve them then we need to engage with them more regularly.  And that means we as leaders have a responsibility to inspire them. This book will make you think and rethink your leadership.  Not only is it filled with great research, but it also has a work book after each section so that you can put your new leadership skills to work.  Truly an inspiring new way to look at leadership. "Whatever we have achieved as a species has nothing to do with one person alone."Why start a leadership book with a mammoth hunt? Nicolas and I delve into the human dimension of leadership and what it brings to society. Human behaviour is the most unmeasured risk in strategy implementation. To avoid pitfalls, be aware of evolutionary biases such as the false positive decision-making bias. Companies build echo chambers, where people raise a view that is not the same as their boss's, and then avoid talking about it.A crucial point: humans achieve greatness through collaboration. A lone human has little chance against a mammoth. Hunting one requires strategy, the right people, and a shared purpose. This highlights a fundamental truth: our collective efforts drive success.Organisations should acknowledge the inherent tension between individualistic needs, collaboration, and competition among employees, fostering a culture where personal and company goals align.Nicolas shares his insights, experience and stories of working and researching the human dimensions of leadership and what it means for today's workplace. The main insights you'll get from this episode are : - The human dimension of leadership and what it brings to society is key – a failure to understand ourselves and the people we lead is a big problem that is borne out by history (as far back as the time of the mammoth).- Collaboration and strategy were needed to hunt the mammoth (cf. the big machine in modern times); nowadays we have lots of smaller, interconnected mammoths but we still need to know how to lead a herd of mammoths.- To progress in an organisation requires sharing our learning and leading a team towards a goal: leaders need people with the right expertise and people they trust – very similar to a mammoth hunt.- The human ego is problematic when it comes to achieving a common goal, with the apparent paradox between working for oneself and being wired for collaboration, i.e. the individual vs the collective.- Leaders in the transactional corporate world must learn to be humble, lead by example, be purpose-driven and role model a positive culture – they need their team more than their team needs them.- Leadership, followship and hierarchy counteract the vulnerability, slowness and weakness of the individual; leadership was originally task-related, with different leaders for different tasks, teaching how to lead and how to follow. - Today, one person becomes CEO without the relevant skills/knowledge for all the different tasks and must therefore understand when to lead and when to follow, going against the grain of what it means to be a ‘strong leader'.- The ‘mammoth' approach to leadership involves four levels of team performance - fight or flight, competitive, creative and flow – along with a leadership/ followship framework and a dynamic stability framework.- These are old ideas to avoid pitfalls, e.g. if you don't evolve, you die as an individual and die out as a species – the same is true for companies, yet human behaviour remains the most unmeasured risk in business strategy.- Diversification is very risky – if the main aim is to survive and be sustainable, it is vital not to lose sight of the core business; what you do today is most important, otherwise there is no tomorrow.- We must understand that as humans we have evolutionary biases (false positive decision-making bias, confirmation bias, anchoring bias), are risk averse...

Teams don't build themselves. They are delicate, fragile and unstable. They need constant care and attention from the leader. Despite the sexiness, a team of stars is not what we want either. They will always lose to a star team, a united front of uncompromising commitment to each other and to winning. Here are some things to think about when building and maintaining the team. 1.        The Role Of the Leader One of the better metaphors for leaders is the orchestra conductor.  They are uniting and harmonising a group of stars to work together.  Each person brings their specialist role, talent and commitment. The leader is the one to glue the team together.  The leader creates the environment where the team can coalesce around the tone, direction, culture, values, vision and mission. Central to achieving this cooperation is the leader's communication and people skills. The trust won't be created by a bumbling, disorganised, incoherent, selfish, small minded person claiming the glory for themselves and basing their leadership mantle on their received status power. 2.        Identifying Strengths One of the follies of leadership, and I speak from deep experience here, is trying to fix the gaps and weaknesses of the people in the team. We can easily find our time is tied up in resuscitation efforts for people who are struggling or underperforming. We are better to have a mix of people, with a variety of skills, talent and abilities and work across the sum of the whole, rather than trying to put band aids on their weaknesses.  By definition, 80% of the team are producing 20% of the results.  We need to get more out of the 20% producing 80% of the outputs. This is the true alchemy through informed division of labour. 3.        Clarity Around Responsibilities The worst part of being a leader is thinking people are clear on what they need to do. You have told them right? Then you find they are not doing what you expected or need.  Part of this is the fact that a single communication is never sufficient. We cannot just bark out orders and then wander off.  We need to manage the people and their work, without micro-managing and pulverising them into submission.  We need to keep abreast of progress. If things are not working, then we need to know about it early and intervene to right the ship. 4.        Encouraging Collaboration Teams are usually small affairs, even in big corporations, because people are divided into sections. In this modern high-tech era, that invariably means people are doing a lot and are super busy.  This doesn't lend itself to having excess bandwidth to help others in the team or even more vitally, helping people in other sections. We also have the danger of the leader trying to unite their tribe by making the other section's tribes the enemy.  This is a disaster. The true enemy are the opposition team in the rival company. We need to make them the bad guys, not our own colleagues.  That doesn't stop ambitious leaders from trying to gain advantage internally, by using their team as a weapon for supremacy, domination and relentless ladder climbing. The leader's job is to contribute to the entire enterprise effort and make sure the firm wins in the marketplace. 5.        Proactive Team Building The leader has to create the opportunities for the team to get together.  These could be Town Halls, brainstorming sessions, team lunches and dinners or any other excuse to get the group together.  With work from home so prevalent, the team members don't see each other every day, as they usually did before Covid.  Team projects are a good tool for getting people from different sections together who normally may not have a chance to work with each other. It introduces diversity into the creative process and creates the human bonds needed to keep everyone together.  I am such a business genius and guru.  I hired four new people in January 2020, seconds before the pandemic wrecked the training industry. One of them drew her secure salary happily every month through the devastation and simply up and quit at the end of Covid.  Ouch. She was in her late twenties when she joined the firm and spent the pandemic working for us from her room in her parent's house in Shinjuku.  I realised later that she didn't have any close friends inside the company and so it was easy for her to depart.  Yes we had meetups online, but it wasn't enough and not the same as being together in-person.  This was my first pandemic, so I made a number of leader mistakes during Covid as a result. This is not a comprehensive list of items on the subject of team building, but there is plenty of food for thought to get to work on.  The leader is the driver here. We go for role clarity and keep reviewing what is working and not working.  Retaining our talent is the name of  the game for the modern leader in population declining Japan and if we make a mess of it, the penalties are potentially fatal. Team building never goes out of fashion or relevance.  The problem is we are never properly trained for this part of the role and we bumble along through trial and error. We all need to do a better job of educating ourselves in this regard. The best time to start was yesterday and the second best time is today.

Stop Reacting, Start Leading: How a Clear Vision Can Transform Your Team (and Your Life)

Albuquerque Business Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2024 20:51

Hey Self-Aware Leaders, Today's episode is a special one, inspired by a recent conversation I had with a friend who's leading a team through some major uncertainty. It got me thinking about a powerful concept I stumbled upon in the Harvard Business Review: the importance of developing a clear vision when managing ambiguity. Now, I know what you're thinking – "Vision? That's easy to say, but how do I actually create one when everything feels up in the air?" Trust me, I get it. As leaders, we're constantly navigating the unknown, and it can be tempting to just react to whatever comes our way. But here's the thing: when we don't have a clear vision, we're like ships without a rudder, tossed about by the waves of uncertainty. We lose sight of our goals, our values, and what truly matters. And that's when things can really start to unravel. So, what does it mean to develop a clear vision in the midst of ambiguity? It's about more than just setting a goal or having a plan. It's about defining what success looks like for you and your team, even when the path forward is unclear. I love the example they shared in the article about parents trying to raise "good kids." The definition of a "good kid" is different for every family. For some, it might mean academic success, while for others, it might mean strong family connections or athletic achievements. The key is to identify what matters most to you and use that as your guiding light. So, how do we do this in our own leadership roles? Here are a few self aware questions to get you started: What are the core values that guide your decision-making? What does success look like for your team, your organization, or even your personal life? How can you align your actions with those values and goals, even when faced with uncertainty? Once you have a clear vision in mind, it's like having a compass that points you in the right direction, no matter how turbulent the waters get. Remember, a vision isn't a rigid plan. It's a flexible framework that allows you to adapt and adjust as new information emerges. But it's also a powerful tool that can give you the confidence and clarity you need to lead with purpose, even when the path ahead is uncertain. So, my fellow self-aware leaders, let's commit to developing a clear vision, not just for our organizations, but for our own lives. Let's embrace the unknown with courage and clarity, knowing that we have the power to create our own success. Until next time, keep leading with awareness!
