We have done quite a few episodes on genset maintenance, monitoring, and being able to forecast engine failure or repair. Today we want to talk about what happens when your engine reaches its end of life.  Now that could be for a number of reasons: first, it's reached the end of its depreciation cycle and you simply want to replace it, secondly a lack of maintenance has allowed the engine to fail, and lastly perhaps it's had a good life and it's now time of a complete overhaul, which in some cases can be quite costly. To help us explore these different options and introduce us to a really cool new option, I've asked Hafiz Shiraz to join us.  Email us: powerbytes@cat.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/cat-electric-power/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Caterpillar.Electric.Power/

This episode of Country Squire Radio is brought to you by Missouri Meerschaum and the Tin Society. We thank them for supporting this show, and we thank you for supporting them. Episode 238: The End of an Era Welcome & Housekeeping: Jon David laments on the busy-ness but celebrates the shop’s success with the IPSD sale over the past week. The Country Squire also had 2 pipe pilgrimages on the same day! The NOLA Pipe Club (members Mark Van Vrancken, Jared Purvis, and Ryan Smith) made a trip to Jackson, and two guys from the Austin Texas Pipe Club (Josh White and Zach Limburg) showed up to deliver Jon David his wedding cake toppers, which are two hand-painted MM Diplomat cobs made by Josh’s wife Liz! Be on the lookout for some pictures. They are stunning! Also welcome to new Pipe Club Squire Adam Larkin! Thanks for joining man! Topic: Jon David and Beau discuss some news, both breaking (regarding McClelland) and sad (the death of Lars Ivarsson) Instead of trying to copy verbatim what JD and Beau have said on this topic, I’ll highly encourage you to listen to this particular episode in full. It’s an emotion-filled eulogy in many ways and translating that into written word is a difficult task. So I offer two pieces of reflection. One, is a quote from Chuck Stanion’s article on Mike McNeil from the Winter 2000 edition of Pipes & Tobaccos Magazine. "If the quality of available leaf ever went down," says Mike, "to the point where we didn't like our own product, we would shut the doors. We would shut the doors immediately and end it all, because our name is on that can and I'd rather find something else to do than put out something that isn't right. I would rather go out of business. That way we could say, 'Well, at least we went out with a great name.' So McClelland will always be high quality. We'll never change." And today (2/26), that’s exactly what happened. As of this week, McClelland is shuttering their doors. I think I speak for many when I say we wish them the best and thanks for so many years of service and love to the tobacco industry. We celebrate their legacy. Thanks Mary and Mike! Second, is a link to Pipedia’s wiki on Lars Ivarsson who died on 2/11/2018 after a long battle with cancer. I encourage you to read the article about his life and craft. Truly, a legendary man, a huge influence on pipe carving, and he will be missed by so, so many. (https://pipedia.org/wiki/Ivarsson,_Lars) - Courtesy of Sykes Wilford of (www.smokingpipes.com) Pipe Question of the Week: Joey writes in and asks “As a new pipe smoker is it better to stick with one tobacco and pipe so that you can learn that pipe and get a good rhythm or is it better to try a lot of different tobaccos and pipes so that you can find your favorite?” Good question, especially for this time of the year. JD always recommends variety. What if you get a bad pipe on your first go? Two ways to approach that. You can practice so you get better, or could it be a pipe problem? You won’t figure that out until you have a little variety. But be careful not to overdo it. There’s so many different aspects of pipe smoking it can quickly get overwhelming! Pick a good pipe from Missouri Meerschaum, or even a nice house pipe from a local tobacconist, and learn the process! Get a variety of tobacco to try out like BCA or 1Q if you don’t have a tobacconist like the Squire to order from! Quick Fire with the Squire: From Loyal Club Member Fr. Andy Koufopoulos! #1 Key Lime Pie or Red Velvet Cake (JD and Beau) #2 Ranch or Comeback Dressing (JD and Beau) #3 New England Patriots or Philadelphia Eagles (JD and Beau (only because they have talons and also he loves hockey teams) Listener Feedback: From listener Corey “Hey Beau and JD, greetings from Afghanistan! I’m an Army Chaplain in the 82nd Airborne Division on my first deployment, and almost done! I found your podcast a week or two ago and have been binge listening ever since. I feel like I’ve found ‘my people’. Pipe smokers. Southerners. Conversationalists. And Christians to boot! The podcast feels like an hour with old friends, so thanks for great content and a warm atmosphere. By the way, I sent you a Facebook message with a picture of me smoking my custom Afghanistan pipe that I carved out here. I got the kit from Mancrates. Also, I have a suggestion for the podcast. I grew up in the south, mostly going to southern Baptist churches. While I find it somewhat ironic now, it seemed perfectly normal as a kid to have an annual revival scheduled at the church...remember those? Maybe they brought in a special preacher, usually from across town or a unique music director, and the we just did a church for 5 nights in a row. Notwithstanding the obvious irony of scheduling a revival…’okay Holy Spirit would you mind showing up from July 6th to July 11th’. I actually look back fondly on these times. So, here’s the idea. What if you did a pipe shop podcast revival in the summer? Plan 5 special shows the be aired every night. Maybe pair it with give-a-ways and deals at the shop! Maybe do a special incentive for club members new and old! Maybe do a prize for most referrals to the podcast? Maybe have an event or two at the shop to reward the pilgrims. Maybe even do a live audience event with questions and answers and a ‘Revival Blend’ to sample. Man...now I want to plan my pilgrimage! I think there could be something here, and I full recognize that it would take a lot of work. You guys are legends in the pipe world, so just ride that mystique. Sorry about the long email, kinda my style. I appreciate you guys and enjoy your work. Keep pressing.” iTunes review from Taylor - “Favorite Podcast! JD and Beau. I absolutely love this show guys. Still in the process of catching up on the backlog but I’m loving every minute of it. If you smoke a pipe or have ever considered it, this show is for you! Details to come, so stay tuned! For those that are interested, Jon David gushes a little on his IPSD blend, which will be a pecan aromatic, but fairly light! If it gets enough traction, there’s a possibility of it becoming a house blend, so go, buy you some IPSD goodies from the Squire, get your ounce, and try it! Then, give him some feedback! Also, 4 more members to announce for the International Country Squire Radio Pipe Club. All Squires! None of the pilgrim blasphemy! David Branch. Austin Horn. Steve Heyman. Satx Pipe. Welcome guys! If I misspelled your name, blame Beau. Someone’s gotta do it, and he failed miserably this time. Jon David and Beau couldn’t continue to do what they do without our support! You guys are the real MVPs! Topic: Beau and Jon David took Rob Bowden’s suggestion, and made an episode! This week they’re discussing pipes that are best for smoking in the cold weather, especially since we’re in the last throes of winter in the south, and the north still has plenty of it, as well as offering some tips and tricks. First thing discussed is those that insist on keeping pipes on the outside of their house, be it in the shed, car, or other means. Generally these are people that smoke a pipe to and from work, or perhaps a spouse that is pipe-smell sensitive. If that’s the case, and it’s terribly cold, you’re going to want to pre-heat that pipe before you load it. Get it up to room temperature, bring it inside at the very least, so you’re not giving it a temperature shock on first light. This can, and has, resulted in some cracked briar or other materials. If the weather is freezing, the moisture in the pipe can and will freeze and that moisture won’t evaporate as easily and readily, and could, in turn, cause the pipe to taste funky or sour eventually! A corn cob pipe might be a better option for you in the long run. Durable, cheap, and light! One of the best go-to pipes hands down. If it does get damaged by the cold, just get another! One material that is not suggested is meerschaum. They’re already fragile, but the stone itself is known to be even more brittle in cold conditions. However, a meerschaum-lined briar doesn’t suffer from this fragile effect. It helps protect the briar, and the briar gives the meerschaum the stability it needs to not crack. If briar is your material of choice, choose something that has a chunky bowl...my personal suggestion would be an author or tomato...maybe a pot. But the extra material helps with the sturdiness of the briar itself. For the lighters themselves, you’ll want to keep your butane soft-flame lighters inside if at all possible. The cold weather seems to really affect how easily they light. You may need to pre-warm it if you insist on keeping it outside or somewhere it’s going to get cold. Think about a windcap as well. This are also handy when you’re outside in any kind of weather, be it windy, rainy, or especially when its cold! And since we’ve touched on lunting...lunt! Bundle up properly and get that blood flowing! Also think about wearing gloves with mitten caps or something with accessible fingers. Helps you get to your tamper and lighter much more easily! Pipe Question of the Week: Frank in Mississippi writes asks “What is the worst/weirdest pipe-related question you’ve gotten from a customer at the Squire?” Mine Pipe Shop Pet Peeves episode? Jon David wonders where to start! He remarks that the worst he’s ever felt from a customer questions, was when they walked in the store, and asked Jon David about his Bing’s Favorite. Said person was interested in getting one and wanted to see his. Guy looks at it and tells Jon David about this website that’s running a sale on it and he was thinking about buying it, but wanted to see Jon David’s before he pulled the trigger. WHAT!??! YOU DON’T DO THAT! Luckily Butch Arthur, awesome friend of Jon David’s and the shop, was there at the time and literally said “No, you don’t do that.” Thankfully, it ended up as a sale, but it was still pretty cringeworthy and completely unacceptable. Quick Fire with the Squire: Sent in my Jim Friedman (sp?), theme is “Getting Healthy” #1 High protein diet (JD) or Low fat diet (Beau) #2 Aerobic exercise (Beau) or weight training (JD) #3 Vitamins or Veggies (JD and Beau) #4 Working out with others (JD) or working out by yourself (Beau) #5 Losing weight to fit into your pants (Beau has different pairs of pants for different weight levels) or Just buy new pants (JD because he gets his pants altered) Listener Feedback: Robin Co. writes in “Great podcast! Recently fell into this podcast as a new-ish pipe smoker. Love the laid back vibe and great info that the guys have. Now working my way through the archives.” Jim Nelson writes in “On a previous show, you two wondered out loud if Diebel’s (Smokeshop in Kansas City) is still around. It is indeed, but it is a good news / bad news story. They are now Diebel’s Sportsman Gallery and have two locations in KC. My son Chris who is also an avid listener and customer of yours said something along the lines of it ‘looking like a high class cracker barrel lobby’ when you first walk in. That nails the ambiance there. They still have a good selection of pipes and still appear to blend their own pipe tobacco. They have a limited selection of tinned tobacco. The cigar humidor is huge though. There is also a fair-sized private club type smoking lounge. But, it’s no longer a ‘pipe shop’. Pipes are clearly second in line and it makes me said every time I walk in. I suppose that given what’s happened to the pipe smoking culture since the 70’s, the move to overpriced duck decoys and pretentious leather travel bags was inevitable. The good news is if you need a barware sign, a pair of socks with bacon on them, or something crazy like that, I know a place on Country Club Plaza where you can get it.” @asechales “ten to twenty five degrees on a clear night without much wind and snow on the ground is hands down the perfect smoking conditions to me.” @hoctorthelovedr “that’s why you enjoy a nice corn cob pipe from Missouri Meerschaum. Leave it in the car, temperature change doesn’t harm it at all.” @Pappy_Joe “the real question is to watch these guys or some exciting Olympic Curling?” @OnMyOwnOpinion (Brian Levine) “socks may not be the best thing to sell in Mississippi! Just saying.” Ending & Wrap-up: Please check out the show sponsor websites to learn more about them, and please consider joining the Country Squire Radio Pipe Club. Raleigh Pipe Expo Reception Party coming up soon on April 6, from 5-9pm at the Ramada Inn on Blue Ridge Rd. in Raleigh, NC. Additionally, there will be a Pipe Carvers Workshop on the 6th as well. The Pipe & Tobacco Expo is on Saturday April 7th, 9am-4:30pm in the Holshauser Building at the NC State Fairgrounds. Texas Pipe Show Oct. 6 2018, additional info to come. Last but not least, Beau, once again, pleads with listeners to send in BBQ gift cards, rubs, steak, sauces, meat products, or generally anything that will help sponsor a BBQ and Tobacco pairing hoping it will force Jon David to agree, begrudgingly, to do the episode. Topic: JD and Beau once again enjoy another fun night of Squire Select where they take two whiskeys (generally speaking) of various origin and suggest pairings with two complimentary pipe tobaccos that Jon David has pre-selected with his brilliant mind and palate. First up - Jack Daniel’s Rye! Spoiler alert: Beau hates it. His precious delicate baby’s bottom tastebuds can’t stand the cheaper stuff. JD Rye is supposedly their first new recipe in 150 years. 90 Proof, 70% rye, 18% corn, and 12% malted barley. Warm golden color. Southern bottle aesthetic with a “craft paper” label. Nose of strong rye and fruit, specifically banana chips. On the palate, we get bananas and the strong rye as well. A tingle or slight burn on the roof of the mouth. The tobacco pairing was Solani Aged Burley Flake Blend 656. Trigger warning - Jon David says it kind of smells like raisin bran. Clean smelling and tasting burley with less sugars to give a more mellow nutty flavor. Bit of a nicotine kick, as could be expected. Tends to help dial back the potency of the Jack Daniels, giving the palate a rest. Next up - TX Blended Whiskey. From Firestone & Robertson in Ft. Worth. Small batch. Aesthetically, a very plain looking bottle. The band near the cap is made of burlap. And the cap is made of boot leather! Nice deep golden color on the brown water itself. 80 proof. Mellow milk chocolate and vanilla notes on the nose and palate. A nice, warm heat, helps round out the mouthfeel. Not strong, but a pleasant warm on the tongue. Very interesting description. Nice and smooth. Won Best American Craft Whiskey in 2013 at the World Spirits Competition. The tobacco pairing is Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader! A semi-uncommon, very venerated, medium English blend. Helps contrast and compliment the mellowness of the TX whiskey with smoky notes of latakia and fragrant orientals. Pipe Question of the Week: Dillon Shalinder (sp?) says “It is a windy night, but I would not be denied my pipe. I’m noticing that my large bent dublin bowl lets me comfortably keep my hand or thumb around the cover of the chamber. Do you guys have any tips about using your hands in regards to keeping the pipe going in adverse weather conditions? Love the show!” Jon David remarks that he has customers that will use their hand as a kind of flue to keep the embers going or they will use their hand as a makeshift windcap. Personal preference at that point. If the thumb method is comfortable with the particular pipe you are using, go ahead and do it! With every pipe being different in some way, it all comes back to experimentation! Don’t forget your windcap either! They’re cheap and worth trying out. Also doubles as a cap for a pipe on the go. Or keeping the ashes contained in your car! Quick Fire with the Squire: Sent in by Jordan Scoville. #1 Sleeping in late (JD) or Getting up early (Beau) #2 Pencil or Pen (JD and Beau) #3 Lasagna (JD) or Spaghetti (Beau) Listener Feedback: Doug Owen says, in response to last week’s episode on the Aristocrat and the Farmer, “Gosh what a great discussion. There’s a little of the Aristocrat and Farmer in all of us pipe smokers, but clearly most of us tend to gravitate towards one side or the other. You guys have a highly sophisticated audience. I appreciate a bit higher level of discourse typical of a discussion such as this one. One small but significant example of this was when Beau used the phrase “suffice to say” as opposed to the ubiquitous “sufficed to say” so commonly used today by people of a lesser sophistication. I’m sure Beau did that on purpose. Way to go Beau and JD. Keep up the good work and keep puffin!” Dave Miller writes in and says “I would love it if you guys delve into the world of British tobaccos like Condor, St. Bruno, Warrior Plug, Revor Plug. These tobaccos have such a rich history that it’d be great to hear y’all talk about them, and/or their houses. Just a thought on some talking points. Don’t want to come off like I’m telling you all how to do your own show as I love it as it is. You guys are great!” iTunes review in from JH2196 - “Great podcast! What a great show. About the time I think your podcast can’t get any better you blow me away with a new show. It seems that each show is better than the preceding one. I hope you both have a great Christmas and a very happy and prosperous and New Year. Keep up the good work. I look forward to each new episode with anticipation of the unexpected happening!” Ending & Wrap-up: Please check out the show sponsor websites to learn more about them, and please consider joining the Country Squire Radio Pipe Club.
