Kyle Smith: The epitome of hard work

Inside Tri Show

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 14, 2022 53:40

New Zealand triathlete Kyle Smith is the epitome of hard work, sometimes he'll admit, perhaps he goes too hard. He's worked so hard for all of his successes, working as a bricklayer with his Dad before earning enough money to fly with his bike and a backpack to race on the European scene. The belief and determination has paid off, with multiple 70.3 wins, Jan Frodeno as a training partner and the confidence to give Olympic qualification a crack for Paris 2024. Quite the story of this young lad who loved all things Equestrian when he was growing up near Blackburn, in the North West of England and only discovered triathlon when his family moved to Taupo, New Zealand when he was 12. You'll hear:16:00 When Kyle moved to New Zealand with his family and how he got into triathlon18:00 Kyle gives an example of a mad Tuesday when he was a teenager. 22:00 What horse riding and equestrian meant to Kyle as a youngster and the work ethic he got from his parents. 24:00 Working with his dad as a bricklayer in 2020 and what he's learnt from that. 'After a few weeks of it, I was wrecked.' Doing triathlon was not an option and bricklaying was my option to make things work. 29:00 Why him leaving New Zealand is like Lord of The Rings! And what life was like when he left for Europe with a backpack, having qualified for Kona. 30:00 Why his original plan was to qualify for Tokyo... but then he qualified for Kona 'its been too good to be true' but it was never the plan really. I raced Ironman NZ and then qualified for Kona, so I came to Europe. I didn't even have a fork when I arrived. I remember the first two things I brought were a towel and a fork. 33:00 Why qualifying for the Collins Cup in 2020 changed everything and why security is so important. 35:00 Why he came to Girona39:00 Why Braden Currie had to help him out when he was in Boulder as a 19-year-old and didn't really know Braden...!41:00 The most influential thing he has learnt from Jan? Cutting out the junk training. Everything is just so calculated and everything is done for a reason. How it works training with him. 46:00 Why Kyle is targeting the Olympics in 2024 'I think the Olympic distance suits me more than Ironman but I have to go back to World Cup level and work my way through.'49:00 Kyle talks about how it was Hayden Wylde and his coach who were also in favour of him giving the ITU another crack!Find out more about this week's guest:Kyle Smith InstagramPodcast SponsorsForm Swim and Presca Sportswear are sponsoring the podcast on a bi-weekly basis so you can hear the best interviews in triathlon each week. Kathmandu Coast to Coast: WRAP UP brought to you by CP MEDIA Bobby Dean – We didn't see this year's 5th seed on the start line in 2021, as he sat out the year due to injury. However we saw Bobby Dean back on the start line for 2022 and his 6th KMDC2C. Bobby was one of the youngest within the Top 10 field and made his presence known coming in 3rd behind Dougal Allan and race winner, Braden Currie. Vicky Jones – Vicky Jones the final person to get to the finish line in New Brighton on Saturday by beating all of the cut offs and in doing so completing an epic Longest Day Kathmandu Coast to Coast. She had a point to prove after breaking her boat in the paddle a couple of years ago which made getting to the finish line even sweeter this time. Ethan Halliwell – Completed this years Mountain Run in 3:34:42, just under 20 mins ahead of Ben O'Carroll. Ethan breaks down his race for us. Elina Usher – Lining up for her 17th Coast to Coast, Elina is no stranger to the Coast to Coast experience - with 4 Womens Longest Day titles and now 6th time placing 2nd. It was a tight race out front within the Elite women within only minutes separating race winner, Simone Maier, Elina and 3rd place Fiona Dowling. Braden Currie – Braden is this year's Coast to Coast Longest day champion and adding a 4th C2C title to his name. After COVID spoiled the plans for the now cancelled IRONMAN NZ, Braden was spurred on by Coast to Coast owner Mike Davies to hit the Kathmandu coast to coast starting lineup. So with a mere 36hrs of prep time, Braden dusted off his kayak and his multisport roots and headed for Greymouth! Braden began his professional racing career within C2C, racing 5 consecutive C2C's, with his last being in 2016, when he placed second to Sam Clarke, hanging up his kayak to enter the world of Ironman. Hitting the finishing chute with a 20 minute lead on defending Champion, Dougal Allan on Saturday, it was an epic race to watch. Today Pete and I are excited to speak with triathlon legend Cameron Brown. We had to reschedule this after some pre race issues for Cam last week and glad we did and get to speak to him about his exceptional performance at Ironman NZ on the weekend and breaking the course record at 43 years young. Brownie's been racing for 28 years and has a bit of wisdom to impart. Enjoy. Picture by @DellyCarr In today’s episode, we discuss: The big secret to Cam’s success (Clue: there is more than one!). What keeps Cam Brown motivated. Enjoyment in the sport. Adapting the discipline. Family. Battling it out with Calum (Millward). Knowing when to make a move. Coming back from an injury too soon. Training under Scott Molina. Cam’s biggest adversity. Managing the “age factor”. Learning patience. Active recovery. What triathlon means to Cam. Staying focused in the race. Episode 87 Ironman Talk www.ironmantalk.com This weeks news Coming up: IMWA. Kiwi triathlete carries Olympic torch. Interview with Gina We got this from Gina’s website. She’s obviously doing some big things! Gina came from a swimming background, competing competitively to NZ national level until she was 17. After a 7 year break from all sports Gina took up triathlon as a way to get fit at the beginning of 2005. She took to the sport immediately and after her first few wins decided to take the sport more seriously, and began a structured training programme. Gina also left her job as a high school maths teacher to continue working part time as a violinist for the Christchurch Symphony, leaving more time and energy for training. Since then Gina has enjoyed numerous wins at home in NZ and in March 2007 competed in her first ironman (Ironman NZ) and finished in 5th place. Gina has decided that the ironman distance races are where she will focus her energy. 2007 will be Gina’s first pro year and she is looking forward to gaining experience at international level. Here’s the questions www.ginaferguson.com www.fifthelement.co.nz This Weeks Discussion Should you be able to take your kid/family down the finishing chute at an Ironman race? Plus come up with a name for our Training Camp If you want to add a comment click here: add comment then open the discussion. Website of the Week Matt Johnson sent through this great youtube clip of the Drafting at IM Florida: Click here. What’s happening to our sport? Age Grouper of the Week Bree Wee was the first age grouper to finish in Kona. She had an amazing race doing 56:35 in the swim, 5:21:41 in the bike and then run 3:24:15 for a finish time of 9:47:42. While that was an amazing time she managed to get 13th over all! The other reason we choose her as our age grouper was because she has a profile on Athlinks, she must listen to the show. Questions and Answers Jules sent through this question: I have a question regarding tyre pressures.  I have a set of tubular race wheels and the max psi shown on the tubulars that I am currently using is 140 psi.  Does this mean that I should inflate to 140 psi? Is it advisable to do so?  Recently I have been inflating below this level (say 120 psi) and had no problems but in I have had two punctures (one in a race) when I inflated to 140 psi.  Do I stand more of a chance getting a puncture when inflating he tubulars to their maximum psi?  Finally, all of my races are in humid/hot conditions (e.g. Phuket coming up) which I presume results in the tyre pressure increasing whilst the bike is in transition so I should allow for this?
