This edition of The Bunker Podcast comes from Camille Altay (they/them), a visual artist, composer and DJ who lives and works in Climax, New York. Camille spent formative years as a drum and bass dj in the house-heavy rave scene in Chicago in the late 90s. A contrarian in nature, Camille has been known to play genre-bending dj sets with influences ranging from Cumbia to Ghettotech. Camille's live sets lean toward the spiraling, runaway arpeggiations of synth music in its initial stages of identity crisis - whether to emulate real instruments, or subversively carve a path towards unnamed and evolving shapes of space and identity. Mysteries of the Deep has released its third and final compilation, rounding out the three-part seasonal series that began earlier this year. Each has been distinct and reflective of the season of its release; the first, released in spring, leaned towards the organic and ethereal. The second—a summer release—was oriented towards rhythmic vitality. And the third installment in the series, like the winter season, is deep, dark, and contemplative: a call to turn inwards. The thread that connects each track in Chapter Three is mood: each one of these tracks brings to mind the inward spaces of winter. From the smoky, ghost-like vocals of Xexzy’s “Lost” to the percussive fervor of Birds of Prey’s “Escapement,” this compilation offers a dynamic range of sounds, while remaining sonically coherent. Thomas Ragsdale’s “Kicking Ox” makes for a fitting opening, for its dark pulse and somber strings set the tone for what’s to follow. Much of this work seems to reflect the end of a long, chaotic year; often these arrangements are stark, unsettling and dystopian, like Push for Night’s tense, cinematic “Fingering the Fuse” and Israel Vines’ “Shallow Pursuits.” Elements like the ragged chords of Rafael Anton Irisarri’s “Haggard,” the steady, buried kick in Christina Giannone’s “Lapsed Contentment” or the sonic droplets of Radere’s “Harm Matrix,” lend to a sparse, wintry atmosphere. But, as within any bleak, snowy landscape, there’s the occasional sheen of light. Joachim Spieth’s “Luna,” and Rhaeticus’ “Standing on Concrete” are heightened and emotionally rich. Overall, the third and final release grounds itself in an identity that feels distinctly different from the first two chapters, and yet simultaneously completes the arc of the series, which has showcased over three dozen artists dedicated to their craft. Mysteries of the Deep Podcast, Chapter CVIII by Israel Vines (@israel-vines) 'Jeff Mills has been a hero of mine for a quarter of a century, but around 6 or 7 years ago I realized that I had lost touch with his world. Part of the reason is his prolific nature (which makes it hard to keep up) and the other factor is that Jeff just wasn't producing "hits" like i9 or Gamma Player at this point, so if you weren't paying close attention, some of what he was doing was easy to miss. Jeff was going deeper and more conceptual, stretching his recurring themes to their limits and exploring new territory that wasn't necessarily geared toward creating dancefloor mayhem. As I caught up with the releases I had missed and started keeping up again, I was drawn in particular to his ambient and experimental efforts, which I think are somewhat overlooked because of his legendary status as a dancefloor DJ. Asyl Cahier is a Tokyo-based DJ who also hosts a series of events entitled LSI Dream. While he was born in Japan, it was moving to New York that led him to explore music more deeply and begin to DJ. There he was influenced by, and had the chance to play alongside, house luminaries like Fred P, DJ Qu, and Baaz. There he also fell in love with the beauty of techno music and discovered more abstract sounds. When DJing Asyl seeks to fuse together these different influences, open to experimenting without ever losing sight of the dancefloor, with a consistent groove grounding his sets. His considered approach has established him as a name to watch in the Tokyo scene, and he has supported many international acts, including Shed, Svreca, Powell, Lena Willikens, Mosca and the Giegling crew. If you manage to come up and make a mark on the Detroit scene, you are clearly doing something right. And that’s just how Derek Plaslaiko started: spinning his clinical yet sophisticated sets at various key raves around the Mid West of America before eventually establishing himself on the global underground circuit. Now, although Berlin based, you may caught his name on the flyer for the No Way Back parties (put on by Interdimensional Transmissions - the Detroit imprint that has put out several of Plaslaiko’s rare original releases) and is a resident for Bunker NYC and has been for years. He also releases his stylish brand of techno on the club’s in house label and has close ties with Ghostly International. Add to this the fact he played a sublime closing set at our festival back in August, and Derek is a natural choice to mix it up for our podcast series. The resulting two and a half hour selection is an exquisitely programmed ride through many shades of techno, from stripped back and thumping to eerie and heady via raw and nasty. Just when the pressure seems like it might get too much, Plaslaiko masterfully switches up the mood and takes you somewhere else, thus keeping you locked to his grooves. He says of the mix, “it was done in one take at the Resident Advisor offices in Berlin. The neighbours complained about the volume near the end of the recording, so I was forced to do the last few mixes headphones only. It's made up of about 60% current favourite tracks, and 40% unreleased material from a handful of friends. Kris Wadsworth, Jared Wilson, Todd Osborn, Dona, DVS1, Mr Statik, Secret Studio and Israel Vines all submitted tracks specifically for this mix. Will Lynch, Jim Beam and a massive amount of Burger King all played a major role in getting it done. I like a good story when hearing a DJ set, so that's what I was going for when programming the mix.

Troels Knudsen lives in Copenhagen, Denmark and has been immersed in music for most of his life. This focus has mostly been fixed on the club world. And he spent the last 10+ years producing, performing, engineering and dj'ing various electronic genres around Europe and beyond. This activity generated the excentric Pyro drum'n'bass moniker, house works as part of 2400 Operator on Underground Quality and the industrial tinged techno project Northern Structures on Sonic Groove. After a few years of working in groups it was time to get back to solo work. In 2012 the Ctrls project was iniated with the release of the Interface EP on the new homebase Token Records. A remix of Ø/[Phase]'s Binary Opposition was the follow up, and by then Ctrls tracks had worked their way into the sets of some of the most notable techno djs across the world. Troels continues to develop his fast paced and futuristic style, seeking out the various nuances of techno and the surrounding genres.
