“God said, give 'em drum machines—and see what happens.” That's the dream Mike Huckaby shared, and it's the heartbeat of God Said Give 'Em Drum Machines, the acclaimed documentary by Detroit filmmaker Kristian Hill that restores techno's true story—deeply rooted in Black Detroit creativity, culture, and resilience. “We had a grocery store on Hastings Street. My grandfather ran numbers,” Hill recalls, grounding his storytelling in generations of Detroit legacy, from his grandmother Mabel White teaching home economics at Kettering and cooking for Aretha Franklin, to DJing with friends like Al Ester and parking cars outside Cheeks while legends like Jeff Mills and Stacey Hale spun inside. The film traces the untold journey of techno's pioneers—Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Eddie Fowlkes, Blake Baxter, and Santonio Echols—as Hill and his team follow the music from Detroit to Amsterdam, Japan, South Africa, and even Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, where locals called it “the Detroit of Russia” and clubs pulsed with Detroit's sound. “We got the stars,” Hill says, referring to the Belleville Three and others, “but nobody ever tells the story.” Fueled by years of footage and shaped in long, late-night edit sessions, the documentary is not only a cinematic reclaiming of techno's Black roots but a personal odyssey of creative purpose. “It's not just a link. It's an experience,” Hill emphasizes, reminding audiences that this is more than a movie—it's Detroit history set to a beat that moved the world. Blake Baxter and I dive into the book titled Against Empathy by Paul Bloom. As Blake puts it, "empathy has been weaponized against autism." Listen in to hear more about both autism and the concept of empathy.
My friend, Blake Baxter, shares his diagnosis story and we are collaborating on a podcast series regarding the ambiguous concept of empathy. This is part 1 of our series together as we venture together to figure out what is the definition of empathy and why it is assumed to be missing in those with autism when we have seriously different experiences.
Trusts and wills for children with special needs are essential to have in place now, so their future is well prepared in advance. We need to be sure our children with special needs are cared for with or without us when we are either incapable, or no longer here. In this podcast episode I interview attorney, Blake Baxter, on the subject of trusts and estate planning for children and adults with special needs. Some of the questions we address in making sure the trust is set up correctly to protect your family are: Who do you talk to about setting up a trust? What kind of trust to have? Who will be the be the beneficiary, the executor, or have power of attorney? Who oversees the trust and handles the investments and accounts? What if I'm still alive but no longer capable of making decisions for my child or their care? Do I still need a Will if I have a trust set up? Who are special needs attorneys who set up estate planning and how do I find a reputable one I can trust near me? Blake Baxter Live At Switch
RAVE THE NATION: hearthis.at/oldskool
Robin began discovering Techno music in the late 80s, listening to artists like Phuture, Armando, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Blake Baxter, The Wizard, etc… At the same time, he began getting involved in organizing some of the first Techno parties in The Netherlands. When the European Techno/House scene exploded in the mid-90s (and creative development/progression stopped), he decided that it was time for a change and started to search for new challenges in Techno music. In 1998, he decided to take things to a new level and started composing Techno music for himself. In 2002, he felt that the time was there to begin playing his own, somewhat Minimal Techno music in front of live audiences at Techno parties. Since then, Robin's own music became increasingly mature, and he has since then performed live at a lot of parties, with ever-growing success.

Today, Berlin is one of the premier destinations for techno music fans. People come from all over the world to party all night to the rhythmic beat of Berlin's club scene. And this music that the city is most famous for developed in large part because of the thing the city is most infamous for: the Berlin wall, which divided the city into east and west for almost thirty years. When the wall fell in 1989, everyone was euphoric and parties started popping up everywhere. East Berlin was like a big playground of derelict buildings. It wasn't just the abandoned apartments. There were also former military sites and factories that had been shut down and buildings that had been condemned. And these places were perfect for techno.Tanz Tanz Revolution

Friends, Greetings to all of you out there for another edition of the ESOA Podcast. "Rhythim is Rhythim - Nude Photo" released on "Transmat" is an ultimate classic from 87' and another really great track with the "Detroit" seal of approval. My guest today was, if you like, in charge of it. Everyone should know Thomas Barnett, but surely also some of his aliases like Groove Slave, Subterfuge or Four313, a project in collaboration with Blake Baxter. Today, well over 30 years later, Thomas is still active and can look back on a countless series of productions and releases. In '96 he was to found his own label "Visillusion" but over the years he has also released on a number of international labels. Here are a few examples Transmat, Novamute, Psychothrill, Submerge, Warp, Prime and many more. But his productions are not only known for the club, also for commercials and movies. I am very happy to finally present a first guest from Detroit. I hope you enjoy his exclusive set, here is ESOA Podcast 033 by Thomas Barnett. Stay faithful and stay healthy. Cheers. This one is a little bit special - Orlando Voorn remains one of the most significant producers and dj's of a generation having released a sprawling catalogue of material across almost thirty years. In the 90's his focus was placed on techno and purpose built club tracks, this is perhaps what he is best known for. However, in between this there have been explorations into IDM, House and beyond with endless monikers fulfilling his creative aspirations. The Living Room, Format, Fix, Baruka and The Nighttripper are but to name a very few. Orlando Voorn played a pivotal role in the emergence of Detroit techno in Holland - he pioneered a sound which evolved in the underground communities of the US and helped bring it to life overseas. Collaborations with the likes of Blake Baxter and Juan Atkins cemented this further. In the present he remains an unsung hero of the underground, still furiously releasing music at a relentless pace. His latest outing is on Kompakt and showcases his longstanding relationship with old school electro and Detroit techno in fine form. We invited him to record a mix for the site, it's blistering and fast paced straight from the off - you have been warned.

Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords Mike Grant/Moods & Grooves on Facebook: goo.gl/IIyWhD @mikegrant50 http://www.big50entertainment.com/ At the end of the 1990s, Mike Grant re-emerged as one of the leading figures in Detroit’s growing house scene after spending the majority of the decade and late ‘80s pursuing other ambitions. When Grant’s fresh Moods & Grooves label began raising more than a few eyebrows with its catalog of releases by many of Detroit’s best house producers, few knew that he has been a key figure in the Motor City’s early to mid-‘80s electronic dance scene as a talented DJ. Grant is one of the few Detroit DJs who plays complete deep house/house or techno sets as well as a mixture. While traveling throughout Europe Grant earned the distinction as being the first American DJ to have a residency at Tresor Club in Berlin. Grant’s musical career began at an early age, influenced by Detroit’s fledging music scene and his uncle, the general manager at a local R&B/dance radio station, WKWM. By 1980, the young Grant had joined a DJ collective known as Men of Music while becoming close friends with schoolmate Blake Baxter. Baxter showed Grant the art of beat mixing while the two made mix tapes after school, and Grant eventually joined Baxter’s DJ group, The Beat Sound Company. A few years later in 1983, Grant was scoring club residencies in Detroit alongside legends such as Ken Collier and also managed to make appearances on The Scene, a video dance show on WGPR alongside even more local DJs such as Jeff Mills. During this mid-‘80s era, Grant’s reputation as one of the city’s top DJs led to eventual friendships and partnerships with many of that eras other top DJs, most notably Eddie Fowlkes, Derrick May, and Juan Atkins. During the summer of 1985, he became a member of Detroit’s first radio mix show, “Street Beat,” where the foundation for what would later become early Detroit techno was ultimately formed. Prior to the Street Beat show, Grant made a commitment to join the military not knowing what doors would eventually open. During this time in the military, he continued to DJ on the base and in Seattle, where he introduced the sounds of Detroit techno to the unsuspecting West Coast. Following his time in the military, Grant then studied telecommunications in Chicago and began his career in this same field, while occasionally returning to his hometown for the occasional performance. In the late ‘90s, Grant planned his return, beginning with a recording as Black Noise on Metroplex Records, titled “Nature of the Beast.” Rather than just DJ and produce tracks, he went to the lengths of starting his own label, Moods & Grooves, and began releasing the work of his peers as well as his own. By mid-2000, the label had received substantial acclaim – including a high-profile appearance by Grant at the landmark Detroit Electronic Music Festival. In 2001 Grant launched the techno based label End to End and urban sounding Afrosyntrix. Additionally, he’s remixed the Detroit classic “Sharevari,” been selected to perform at Midem’s Electronic Showcase, selected and participated in DEMF/Movement, and included in the “Techno – Detroit’s Gift To the World” exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum.

Thanks a lot. -> http://www.replaymag.de/sets-der-woche-kw-03-2015/ -> soundcloud.com/replaymag_de ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Just in time before X-Mas and New Year's Eve, and as one of my last sets this year, I wanted to present you a result of my this year's flow. Initially I hoped, a "thank-you gift - mix" might achieve to draw my perfect satisfaction relating to my progression in finding back to music and re-defining myself. But...Gosh! Yeah, that's it. I really like this mix! That's what I was looking for, what I'd lost for a while. It sounds like everything wich means anything to me. Holy crap! I'm back in touch with my strings - YES! So, "inside the box" is meant as a very special gift for each and every one of you, who are listening deep to me and are in love with my frequencies. Thank you so much for this! Not merely sharing my passion for soundscapes with you is fantastic, but rather it's quite awesome to bring special transcendent moments into being - right for you, led and sheltered by my waves... Music is devine. That's what it's all about! Celebrate great holidays with your families and friends and a Happy New Year! Love! Recorded live from Claude Von Stroke's San Francisco record label's party named Dirtybird on Thursday 25th July 2013 in the rapidly becoming legendary club Sankeys located on the White Isle - Ibiza. When i was at uni Sankeys was just taking over from the fading Hacienda as Manchesters main club. In recent years Warehouse Project has assumed that mantle while Sankeys closed and put all its resources and efforts into its Ibizan venture. Nestled in the heart of Playa Den Bossa close to Space and Ushuaia, Sankeys has been going from strength to strength since it opened it's door these last 3 yrs. Sankey's has already built a reputation for packed out crowds and an electric atmosphere with reviews saying that the atmosphere inside feels like a closing party carnival every night. It sure felt like it was a closing party crowd when i played there last week! My set was pitched as a perfect foil to the dirtybird residents Justin Martin, Catz n Dogz, Claude Von Stroke, etc. in the main room. Dirtybird is a tech funk record label and their residents have generally been playing very deep and often minimal loud clubby sounds this summer in the massive main room. To balance the club out, I wanted to play something lighter and different so my set is mainly deep house (but funkier not minimal) and garage with a sprinkling of tech house, jackin house and nu disco and to spice it up a little, with some breakbeats and D&B to end. Turn up the volume, let the mix flow, get dancing or just pretend you are in Sankeys listening live and most of all enjoy! Drop me an email or facebook shout to let me know if you've been listening and if you like it Rubber X Tracklisting: 1 - Let's Drink - Kolombo - Off Recordings 2 - The Curb - SpectraSoul - James Zabiela Remix - Exploited 3 - I see the Lights - Jimmy and Fred - Karmon Remix - Shogun Audio 4 - Divine - Jamie Antonelli - Nurvous Records 5 - Feela - Kolombo - Tobus Records 6 - Dont Make Me Wait For You feat Jess Monroe - Just Be - Magic Dub - Crosstown Rebels 7 - edOne & Bodden - Soundness - Audiotonic Records 8 - Gone Too Long - Him_Self_Her - Cream Couture Records 9 - Into Orbit - Future Four - Crosstown Rebels 10 - Beg - Yousef - Hot Since 82 future mix - Defected 11 - Don't Miss - Paul Ursin - Hands Free Remix - Black Hole Recordings 12 - Every Little Piece feat Catlin Devin - Thomas Schumacher - Hot Since 82 Remix - Black Hole Recordings 13 - Stay High Baby - Maceo Plex - Ellum Audio 14 - Everylife - Pirupm Leon - Tube and Berger Remix - Snatch Records 15 - Dont Go - Justin Martin - Dusky Remix - Dirtybird 16 - Zamin O Zaman - Sam Farsio - Raxon Remix - Audiotonic Records 17 - The Gettup - Justin Martin, Eats Everything - Dirtybird 18 - Only You - Raxon - Audiotonic Records 19 - Freedom Train - Groovestyle - D Boogies 4 Change - Classic Music Company 20 - Me You and I - Mark Henning - VMVA Music 21 - Drunk Again - Reset Safari - Nurvous Records 22 - Talisman - Croatia Squad - Nero Blanco 23 - The Club (version 2) - Blake Baxter, Marc Romboy - Systematic Recordings 24 - Heaven - Karm - Barraca Music 25 - Fall Down on Me - DJ Spen, Rachel McDonald - D's BHQ Voodoo Dub - Classic Music Company 26 - Yes - SpOOnfed - Deeper Soul Mix - Straight Up 27 - Let the Beats Roll feat Sonny Wharton - Tim Deluxe - Skint Records 28 - Aundy - Claude VonStroke - James Zabiela Mashup DJ Marky and SPY 29 - Bring me Down - Zak Toms - Stanton Warriors Vocal Mix
Psycatron live from Distillery Leipzig (GER) 2011 is set to be a big year for Irish techno duo Psycatron aka Paul Hamill & Dave Lievense as they take their project to the next level. 2009 Started off with a string of high profile productions being released on some of the world's most respected labels, they received props from some of the biggest names in the business and record sales flying high in the Beatport charts. 2009 began with the Location Unknown EP on Fergie's Rekluse imprint. The lead track 'Takefive' was a huge smash at the Miami Winter Music Conference with everyone from DJ Hell to Sasha (who was closing his sets it with) making it one of the biggest records of the conference. From Belfast to Detroit followed, with the master Carl Craig signing 'Deeper Shades Of Black' for Planet E Communications making them the first Irish artist to appear on the Detroit imprint. 'Deeper Shades' spent 6 weeks in the Beatport Top 20 peaking at Number 5 with only Cirez D, Adam Beyer, Joris Voorn and Sebastian Leger standing in the way of pole position. Then from Detroit to Sao Paolo in Brazil, where Christian Smith's Tronic Music delivered the devastating 'Directions' and 'Tipping Point' with charts and plays coming in from everyone from Dubfire to Digweed. 'Directions' remixes followed soon after from Matt Nordstrom and Fergie well as featuring on Christian Smith's Platforms compilation for Renaissance. A bit closer to home and an appearance on London based Simple Records demonstrated a deeper, subtle edge at the opposite end of the spectrum from their previous big-room releases but still retaining the signature melodic touches with the 'Orchestral Manouvres In The Park' EP showing up on Will Saul's highly respected imprint. As if to prove that getting signed to Planet E was no flash in the pan, they then went on to sign a deal with legendary Belgian imprint R&S Records home to the likes of Aphex Twin, Joey Beltram and Derrick May who released 'Is What it Is' in November, before rounding the year off with a specially commissioned Transitions mix for John Digweed's radio show. “I think Planet E are one of the most revered labels in the world and it never ceases to amaze us when we meet other well established producers who tell us how much they'd love to release a record on the label and how jealous they are of us! We went from a position where nobody knew about us to releasing on Planet E and all of a sudden lots of doors begin to open and people start taking notice.”PH As the list of Psycatron supporters continues to grow, it starts to read like a who's who of quality underground electronica with everyone from Ewan Pearson to Joris Voorn, DJ Hell, Dave Clarke, Paul Woolford and even Martin L Gore from Depeche Mode all getting behind Psycatron. “I've been into electronic music since i was a kid, from hearing eighties electro-pop on the radio i became a huge Depeche Mode fan (and still am) and their influence creeps into a lot of our music. I played piano for a few years as a kid, but never followed through on it as what I really wanted to play was synths and DJ.”PH With the theme set to continue well into 2010 with Psycatron tracks appearing on the world-famous Radio 1 Essential Mix two weeks running with Simian Mobile Disco and Christian Smith favouring them in their sets, while remix offers have since come flooding in with labels including Cocoon, Bedrock, International Deejay Gigolo, and Secret Cinema's Gemm Recordings all notched on the bedpost for the year. Having spent the past seven years hosting their residency at the world-famous Shine and the Stiff Kitten in Belfast where they've supported some of the biggest DJ's on the planet, 2011 will be the year where Psycatron's winning combination of killer DJ sets and live shows will see them emerge as one of the most exciting acts of the year as their profile continues to grow on a global scale. “When we play live, it's all our own music which we perform live using a couple of laptops and controllers and some keyboards. We also throw in some loops and samples from people who have influenced us over the years and little surprises along the way.” PH Big festivals and events like Hitting Movement 2010 in Detroit in May with Carl Craig and millions more are becoming the norm now for Psycatron, they have played all the big Irish festivals and recently being asked by Dave Clarke to play his party at Amsterdam Dance Event with himself and Green Velvet and friends. Rex Club in Paris has come calling giving psycatron their undeniable stamp of approval and with shows in Naples and Helsinki its easy to see that psycatron are really turning some heads. “It's only when we go abroad that it becomes apparent through meeting people at our shows how far our music has travelled. It's easy to forget when you are back in Belfast on a tiny little island the impact our releases have had around the world, i guess that's a lot to do with working with truly global labels like Planet E, but it's a lovely feeling having strangers come up to us at gig to talk about our music” PH Exiting collaborations are to continue with Detroit legend Blake Baxter on 'She Is Music' which came out on Planet E in October. Also and a new project with Paul Woolford on tracks Thunder/CLoud 9 for Cocoon which is the start of ongoing project with more tracks in the pipeline! An AV twist for the live show is being developed at the moment so expect to see this hitting the clubs 2011. "Psycatron perform an outstanding live set " Dave Clarke "Their tracks combine relentless energy and groove with bundles of emotionand tension, to make for an all-encompassing sound that is perfect for those big arenas and club rooms. Truly 21st century techno". Data Transmission "These guys are fantastic, definitely a name to look out for" John Digweed "Their hybrid, genre-bending live set sees them splice, filter and mess with anything - from their own productions to underground house and techno classics - with devastating effect" DJ Mag.
