The crew discusses cultural norms and beauty standards. Research shows that physically attractive workers earn up to 15% more than those considered less or unattractive. Even more surprising, the beauty pay gap is larger for men than women. Check out the following:According to financialpoise.com, beauty bias can affect your financial future, with attractive people earning 4% more than the average salary and those who are less attractive earning 4% less. Attractive people are also more likely to be called back for interviews and are perceived as more confident, trustworthy, and socially skilled. Women who routinely spend money on their appearance will shell out almost a quarter of a million dollars, $1,756 a year, or $313 a month throughout their lifetime. Versus men who shell out $175,680, about $2,928 a year or $244 a month. Some studies suggest that taller people earn more money. For example, a 2004 study found that for every inch of height, a person's salary increases by $789, which means someone who is 6 feet tall would earn nearly $166,000 more over a 30-year career than someone who is 5 feet 5 inches. This study also noted that height is positively associated with work hours.According to a 2014 WSJ article, a study of 1.3 million Swedish men found that CEOs are generally taller than average, with the average man being 5'10.5" and CEOs being 6' on average. A 2014 LinkedIn study also found that male CEOs average 6 ft tall, and that height differences among CEOs are linked to differences in pay. My last job as a civilian was working on educational research projects for an exam board, and the very last thing I did there was a trial of innovative maths teaching methods in schools. Which isn't something you'd expect to hear about on this podcast, but we get pretty close to it in my conversation with former Hard Wax counterman Tallmen785 as his current area of work combines the teaching of music and maths to kids in an interesting way.You may be familiar with Tallmen techno jams, but Brian Mitchell originally trained to a high level in Jazz guitar. His move from the US to Berlin took him to SUB:STANCE parties and complete change of his musical outlook. We discuss all of the above, as well as the joy of record store work, and revisiting the topic of theory in electronic music. This week is a two-part episode, and after the conversation we dive into a Singles Club-esque format featuring the top 10 streamed Taylor Swift tracks, as requested by Janetpak in the Discord. Kevin is joined by former Boston Globe and Sports Illustrated legend Leigh Montville to discuss his new book: Tall Men, Short Shorts. The book chronicles a young Lee Montville's experience covering the 1969 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. Legendary, award-winning sportswriter Leigh Montville—former Boston Globe columnist, Sports Illustrated senior writer, and New York Times bestselling author of biographies covering the lives of athletes like Ted Williams, Babe Ruth, Muhammad Ali, and Dale Earnhardt—has entertained sports fans and readers for five decades with his wry voice and razor-sharp insights. But even after his six critically acclaimed, bestselling biographies, Sports Illustrated cover stories, and decades of Globe columns, Montville has never written an autobiographical word. That changes with TALL MEN, SHORT SHORTS: The 1969 NBA Finals: Wilt, Russ, Lakers, Celtics, and A Very Young Sports Reporter (Doubleday). Already poised to be a new classic, TALL MEN, SHORT SHORTS weaves a fine thread of Montville's own coming-of-age as a celebrated journalist into an absolutely riveting sports story: the 1969 NBA Finals. Considered one of the best championship series in sports history—seven games, West Coast vs. East Coast, ending with a massive upset—it was a classic battle between the Los Angeles Lakers (the first iteration of the Dream Team so familiar to us today) and Boston Celtics (widely regarded as the underdogs, past their prime after an unbelievable 12-season, 10-championship run), with two of the most legendary stars of the game in Wilt Chamberlain vs. Bill Russell who, even today, rank alongside Michael Jordan and LeBron James as two of the greatest players of all time. But beyond the breathtaking sports writing, Montville also steeps us in the nostalgia of 1969—the good and the ugly—when most professional sports teams were racially integrated but not always smoothly (see: Bill Russell's comments about being a Black man in 1960s Boston) and sports fans didn't quite know how to feel about it, all against the backdrop of Vietnam and an America in political, cultural, and racial turmoil, through the eyes of a very young, very green New England sportswriter. With lively and colorful coverage of the classic series, an epic cast of characters, Montville's own charming narrative thread, and real contemporary resonance to our current political and racial tensions—exploding on and off the court, field, and pitch—TALL MEN, SHORT SHORTS will delight basketball fans old and new. There's more to the actress Jane Russell than those “two things” they announced in the ads for her films. Writer, librarian and archivist Christina Rice can tell you all about it. Her first biography, Ann Dvorak: Hollywood's Forgotten Rebel was a passion project. When her publisher suggested Russell as a follow up, she had to think about whether she wanted to write about this star about whom she knew so little. We are fortunate that she went for it, because her book Mean...Moody… Magnificent: Jane Russell and the Marketing of a Hollywood Legend is just as fascinating and addictive as her debut.
