I've said many times that I love guest mixes. And I especially love getting mixes from artists that I've been listening to for years. Such is the case with this new set from Robert Farrugia. I have several of Robert's albums and I always look forward to checking out his new material. Well, now he's got some new material definitely worth checking out. His new album is called "Natura Maltija - Official Soundtrack" and it just came out last week. You can find it here - https://robertfarrugia.bandcamp.com/album/natura-maltija-official-soundtrack To celebrate the release of this new album Robert put together a wonderful ambient mix for us. Here is what he says about it: "This mix features a selection of tracks from recent Ambient, Neoclassical, and Electronica releases, curated by Robert Farrugia. Centered around my latest album, 'Natura Maltija - Official Soundtrack,' the mix also includes tracks from friends and collaborators." I have hosted more guest mixes than ever this year, which I love because it exposes me to new artists and new mix concepts. Many of these mixes have come through the fine folks at Nettwerk Music Group. It's appropriate then that this final guest mix of the year comes from one of their artists - Hollie Kenniff. I absolutely love the way this mix ebbs and flows, the tracks blend together perfectly. Hollie just released her fourth album, For Forever, which is a lush, melodic ambient record that uses electronic and acoustic instrumentation to create an emotional, ethereal listening experience. Here's what Hollie says about her music: “My hope is that my music encourages others to explore their inner landscapes and to inspire reflection. I want my music to be a musical backdrop for meaningful and transformative moments in other people's lives.” I'm a music mix dork who loves a good segue between songs and this beautiful mix from Hollie has a ton of them, an absolute joy to soak in. Joachim Spieth teases his forthcoming album "Retrace" with the release of the album opener, "Recall," accompanied by a wonderfully dubby, dance-floor-friendly remix from the producer well-known within our community, Luigi Tozzi. While Spieth keeps things in a laid-back "sofa surfer" mode with deep, ambient, and dub-tinged atmospheres, Luigi Tozzi's remix expands the dub side of "Recall" into a proper dancefloor groover whose stabs simply envelope a listener like a spider web. Spieth and Tozzi, two of techno's distinguished artists, join forces and deliver a creme de la creme dub techno release. This is a great introduction to Joachim Spieth's forthcoming album, "Retrace," due in October. The single "Recall" with Luigi Tozzi's remix is coming out on September 6. https://soundcloud.com/luigitozzi https://soundcloud.com/joachim-spieth https://www.instagram.com/joachimspieth/ https://www.instagram.com/luigi.tozzi.music/ Follow us on social media: https://soundcloud.com/itsdelayed https://linktr.ee/delayed https://www.itsdelayed.com https://www.facebook.com/itsdelayed https://www.instagram.com/_____delayed https://www.youtube.com/@_____delayed
As with all past ‘Reflection' year-end mixes, I start with a collection of albums, EPs, and compilations I have enjoyed over the past year. Through the process of compiling a mix, tracks are selected from this extensive collection. This ultimately means many of my favorite tracks and albums are often omitted in this process, due to the organic process of compiling a mix, things don't fit, or fall by the wayside. There are many albums I had on high rotation missing from this mix, but I have to stop somewhere. As I say every year, this isn't a definitive ‘best-of' list, but a selection of *some* of my favorite music from the year in one listenable format. It's the most enjoyable way for me to boil down the music I've loved from the year using these self-imposed restrictions, for you to enjoy and hopefully discover more, and for me to reflect on time and time again - like a photograph that captures the year in music. I encourage you to use the mix to explore each artist, listen to the album in full, and explore each label (and check the Buy Music Club list at the bottom). If you want to see the majority of music I've been supporting this year, head over to my Bandcamp collection. For the ASIP year-end label compilation, see the feature and mix here.~Yikes, I crossed the 3-hour mark! Well, that speaks volumes to the amount of great music that was released this year, and I'm already feeling guilty about omissions from this mix. But alas, it needs to stop somewhere, the Holiday's are coming… This edition marks the tenth year in succession (2010 was the first mix but I skipped doing this for two years for some reason) and it is an extremely enjoyable exercise I look forward to every year. Revisiting many of the albums I've purchased throughout the year, and records from my shelf, then taking the time to absorb more recent releases - the process is cathartic (after the slight anxiety that builds knowing I have a beast of a mix to tackle, and hard decisions to be made). Looking back at previous Reflection mixes, I am evidently a creature of habit and seem to gravitate to certain artists more than most over the years (we all have our faves), but I also take a lot of time to dig for new artists and approaches to music in this realm, and this year's edition is probably the most varied in music styles since the Reflection series began. Ambient, field recordings, drone (Power-ambient, even), big saxophones (the flute revival didn't make it ;-), Japanese left-field pop, deep techno, chugging techno, modern classical, experimental, jungle, breaks, dub and more… as you might imagine, this is a 3hr mix that feels more like a showcase than a DJ mix in the traditional sense, as I'm focusing on creating chapters of different styles, but I hope makes for an attentive listen if you've got 3hrs to spare. Am I going to write about all 42 tracks? Not this time, as I don't think there's much I can illustrate other than ‘go listen to that entire album!' but I will make a few observations on themes that emerged as I was going through this process. Firstly, the far corners of Bandcamp are very much alive, so for anyone looking for alternatives given all the talk with Bandcamp this year, please don't hit the escape button and continue to support us- I continued to find so many new labels and artists, some of which are included here such as Liis Ring, Etüüd, ǝɯǝɐ, Azu Tiwaline and not to forget a kick-ass Jungle community throwing out some lovely 90's infused comps. Bandcamp keeps small labels and artists alive right now (only two of these tracks were physical releases and not on Bandcamp - #19 & #42). I spent a lot of time listening to music that would work for the two shows I played in Japan earlier this year, and for those who listened back to one of the sets I posted, you may notice a few similar tracks/artists appearing here again which I've held in high regard since their release, such as Jo Johnson, Field Lines Cartographer and Endurance. On reflection, there was a lot of deepness for me this year that came from preparing for and inspired by those sets, sitting on the edges of techno with lots of synthesizer/Berlin school projects (as well as a couple of artists I got to see in person whilst over there such as Yolabmi and Endurance). There were a couple of glaring omissions from this mix (*checks Bandcamp app most played*) which I had on rotation so much this year that I still wanted to mention, such as Imaginary Softwoods, who was behind one of my favorite tracks of the year, ‘Diagrams of the Universe'. Along with Johnny Nash's Point of Entry - a tranquil guitar-laden affair, both of which never left my turntable for long. The ever-expanding ASIP roster of artists, both alumni and current, had an extremely busy year evidently (I try to restrict their inclusions in this mix where I can otherwise it could be an entire ASIP promo show… hey that's an idea…). bvdub released about ~10 masterpieces, as only he can, flaunting all possible peripherals in his deep arsenal (along with rounding out the Earth House Hold project with us of course). ASC was crazy busy with his quality retro Spatial DnB releases (one of them made it in here). For those who enjoyed Alex Albrecht's debut with us, don't miss his earlier 2023 release. Deepchild released another great textured follow-up to his ASIP debut for those wanting more. 36 continued some rave-esque ambient no doubt inspired by his 9128 recording a few years back. Markus Guentner began an exciting collab project with Joachim Spieth (and also appeared in several other collaborations). RAI kept things relatively reflective with a few Bandcamp specials and recordings from his live tour. Benoit Pîoulard made a beautiful return to Morr Music, and Christian Kleine rounded out the year with a limited vinyl press. Those needing more from our 2023 new signing Mikkel Rev, can check out his earlier album released in January this year. James Bernard had a busy year alongside his wife as Awakened Souls, and found more 90's DAT goodness among many other projects. Mick Chillage released a superb sleeper IDM album in the form of Initial Programs. Dr Atmo's throwback to his early sounds saw a rebirth of one of his most enjoyed albums alongside new remixes. Wanderwelle made their second full-length odyssey for Important Records and Yagya continued to explore uncharted new takes on his sound through his new label imprint. Scanner's innovative repertoire continued to expand and one of my faves of his came in the form of this collab. Hior Chronik published a couple of unreleased gems. And lastly, Ludvig Cimbrelius aka Purl/Illuvia and Arovane managed to sneak onto this mix with a couple of their releases… Two labels who hit home runs for me this year with the majority of their releases. Illian Tape had some extremely great (and varied) electronic releases. And while Mysteries of the Deep's output was relatively choice (quality over quantity), 3 out of the 4 releases made it onto the mix! There are a couple of tracks in the mix from albums that align with what seems to be, the common consensus on some of the ‘best' electronic releases from the year (one of the advantages of my waiting until mid-December to finish this mix is I see what other people are rating highly or what I might've missed) such as James Holden's psychedelic return, and Purelink's amphibious dub LP. But other than those two, I think everyone should find something new among the twists and turns across the 3 hours and 42 tracks. For the mix artwork this year, and after last year's terribly basic AI take (it's come a long way in a year!), I toyed with creating another AI attempt on a “A Strangely Isolated Place” prompt, but you have to spend time to get quality back out of these lil' work gnomes. Every image I created from that prompt ended up being a stereotypical lonely hiker (with 4 fingers I'm sure) strolling through a highly conceptual colorful future universe. Either that or a decrepit shed…So instead, I opted for an image that means much more to me… a wall. Not just any wall though, it's the wall outside of Spread nightclub in Tokyo where I had the pleasure of playing an ambient set this year, meeting new friends, and making some amazing memories. Thanks to all of the artists and labels included here who have soundtracked my year in more ways than one, and the many more I didn't manage to include this time around. Be sure to check the previous year's Reflection mixes for more of the same. Hope you enjoy the listen back at a great year of music. astrangelyisolatedplace · ASIP - Reflection on 2023 Listen on Soundcloud the ASIP Podcast or the 9128.live iOS and Android appDownload MP3Tracklist:01. Markus Guentner and Joachim Spieth, veterans in the electronic music scene, have rekindled their creative synergy with their latest collaborative effort, "Overlay." The album, a culmination of decades of their distinctive styles, successfully melds Guentner's ethereal, atmospheric textures with Spieth's pulsating rhythms. "Valenz," the premiere for today, encapsulates the album's essence, offering a dark, atmospheric, ambient techno journey that can seamlessly find a home in massive warehouses or within the confines of your headphones. Guentner and Spieth's vision for "Overlay" was to craft an auditory experience that mirrors their philosophy of masking and unveiling, allowing certain elements to shine while fading others into the background. This ethos, founded on a deep-seated trust cultivated over previous collaborations, shines through in "Valenz" and sets the tone for future joint endeavors. The album's material flows continuously, blurring the lines between distinct beginnings and endings, offering a unique and immersive listening experience. "Overlay" is set to be released digitally and on a limited edition CD on November 3 via Spieth's Affin Records, marking an exciting addition to both artists' storied careers. https://soundcloud.com/markusguentner https://soundcloud.com/joachim-spieth https://www.instagram.com/markusguentner_official/ https://www.instagram.com/joachimspieth/ www.itsdelayed.com www.instagram.com/_____delayed/ www.facebook.com/itsdelayed
In this edition, we are thrilled to feature a mix from a true stalwart of the scene, Joachim Spieth. Spieth, a familiar name to our Delayed family, is an outstanding producer and a formidable DJ. As the mastermind behind the always-reliable AFFIN record label, his dedication to precision and meticulous craftsmanship is evident across diverse musical styles. From the drone ambient music tales that soothe the soul to the hypnotic rhythms that propel us into the depths of techno, Joachim Spieth is a maestro who wears many sonic hats. Spieth's mix takes us on an aural expedition, steering clear of the conventional. It commences with a dubby, hypnotic, and ethereal allure, setting the stage for an enigmatic voyage. A beautiful dichotomy unfolds as the soundscape envelops the listener, balancing expansiveness and intimacy. In the dimly lit caverns of clandestine warehouses, Spieth's wizardry weaves a tale designed to enthrall without resorting to the clichéd "banging techno" trope. A transformative moment beckons around the midway point of this odyssey, where a nebulous haze descends upon the dancefloor. Lost in the undulating waves of sound, the crowd becomes tangled in the enchanting atmosphere Spieth has meticulously crafted. At this juncture, the mix undertakes a distinctive shift reminiscent of a deep-sea exploration inside a submarine, plunging us into the depths of Spieth's musical imagination. https://soundcloud.com/joachim-spieth https://www.instagram.com/joachimspieth/ https://joachimspieth.de https://joachimspieth.bandcamp.com www.itsdelayed.com www.instagram.com/_____delayed/ www.facebook.com/itsdelayed

I always welcome new music, new connections, new friendships that then come along. In this example, a track premiere by Joachim Spieth at the end of last year made me relisten to his works on Wolfgang Voigt’s Pop Ambient series, taking me to releases on his very own Affin imprint and finally asking him for a mix. In this process, this seemingly random stranger quickly became a musical friend, as we exchanged grand ideas and connected with music. I really appreciated the spectrum of electronic music genres covered on Spieth’s German label and requested that he showcased the output through a traversal of styles. The result is a beautiful 90-minute journey that will take you from soothing to upbeat, through highs and through lows. I’m very happy with how it turned out and honoured to host this showcase on Headphone Commute.
Part 1 of 2 of my 8 hour deep/dark/trippy/droney/dreamy/hypnotic techno set. Streamed 2021-04-24 on Twitch (https://twitch.tv/quinquatrus). The theme for this mix was "languishing". Languishing is a sense of stagnation and emptiness. It feels as if you’re muddling through your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield. Languishing is the neglected middle child of mental health. It’s the void between depression and flourishing — the absence of well-being. Tracklist (Part 1): 01. A new season begins with a warm welcome to Joachim Spieth, founder of the Affin label. A true veteran of the scene, Joachim's first release dates back 1999 via Kompakt, and his own label narrates an impressive and storied history from 2007 onward. Recent years have seen quite the community grow around Affin's beloved output of ambient and techno, including recent stellar works from Einox and Toki Fuko, and last month's beautiful "Ousia" LP from Joachim himself. This mix is blanketed by a calm, snow-bound serenity yet its nature is far from laid-back. As ethereal as it is energetic, this mix drives forth the clarity of Joachim's vision — a brisk inhale of the coming storm, an idyllic wind lifting us into the gale. Thanks Joachim! @joachim-spieth @Affin Artwork by Danielle Kaidanow.

Mysteries of the Deep has released its third and final compilation, rounding out the three-part seasonal series that began earlier this year. Each has been distinct and reflective of the season of its release; the first, released in spring, leaned towards the organic and ethereal. The second—a summer release—was oriented towards rhythmic vitality. And the third installment in the series, like the winter season, is deep, dark, and contemplative: a call to turn inwards. The thread that connects each track in Chapter Three is mood: each one of these tracks brings to mind the inward spaces of winter. From the smoky, ghost-like vocals of Xexzy’s “Lost” to the percussive fervor of Birds of Prey’s “Escapement,” this compilation offers a dynamic range of sounds, while remaining sonically coherent. Thomas Ragsdale’s “Kicking Ox” makes for a fitting opening, for its dark pulse and somber strings set the tone for what’s to follow. Much of this work seems to reflect the end of a long, chaotic year; often these arrangements are stark, unsettling and dystopian, like Push for Night’s tense, cinematic “Fingering the Fuse” and Israel Vines’ “Shallow Pursuits.” Elements like the ragged chords of Rafael Anton Irisarri’s “Haggard,” the steady, buried kick in Christina Giannone’s “Lapsed Contentment” or the sonic droplets of Radere’s “Harm Matrix,” lend to a sparse, wintry atmosphere. But, as within any bleak, snowy landscape, there’s the occasional sheen of light. Joachim Spieth’s “Luna,” and Rhaeticus’ “Standing on Concrete” are heightened and emotionally rich. Overall, the third and final release grounds itself in an identity that feels distinctly different from the first two chapters, and yet simultaneously completes the arc of the series, which has showcased over three dozen artists dedicated to their craft.

"Lipstick Trash" by Omer Saban. A music project born out of the desire for extreme self-expression, boundary-free, genre-bending productions and eclectic DJ mixes that combine hard-hitting house, techno and electro. Experimenting with live analog equipment such as vintage samplers and synthesisers, self-built instruments such as FM synthesisers and Drum machines, to modern semi-modular instruments, he usually composes obscure, sub heavy, beat driven tracks which all fits together perfectly in a mixture which is easily recognisable as his own. As one of the key members of the Berlin artist collective TrashEra with Aerea Negrot (Bpitch Control) & Deepneue (Vox Populi)and as an individual player in the electronic music scene, he maintains a steady flow of music and shows all around the globe. In the studio, he released his tracks under the Chicago based record label GridBasedBeats, Glasgow based Bulletdodge Records and Berlin based TrashEra Music. He already shared the stage with artists such as Oliver Deutschmann, Alexander Kowalski, Mike Dehnhert, Jerome Hill, Eduardo de la Calle and Joachim Spieth to name a few. When writing a biography, there are certain things you can’t avoid, even though you know it has been said many times and you fear it will end up looking like any other biography, with the usual and righteous amount of name droppings. For instance, in order to write Joachim Spieth’s bio, I couldn’t avoid saying that he has released a numerous amount of records, on labels as renowned as Michael Mayer’s Kompakt. And that some of those releases, such as « Under pressure » have been and are still hits. And I couldn’t possibly forget the label Affin he has successfully been running for about a decade, with dozens of releases added to its catalogue. I also had to mention that he has been involved in the electronic music scene for the past fifteen years; that he used to play in a band as a teenager. I had to name some of the countries he played for: Australia, Denmark, France, Georgia, Iceland, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, Russia, South Africa, UK… But that being said, what really matters at the end is who he is and what he wants to express by producing music. What he has been giving to the scene. Being a shy character, he is not the type of person searching for the spotlight but someone that is evolving on the scene by pure passion and wants to communicate this passion to the others. He created his label Affin to be as independent as possible and focus on his own vision, surrounded by artists sharing it with him. What he does not put into words is translated into sounds. Deep, solemn and at times enraged, his productions represents Techno in its purest expression. They are made to occupy our dying cathedrals of concrete, to crush the reality of our everyday life under an assumed individuality. The elaborated basses and the echoing melodies grab our minds to throw them in a far away world, leaving the silence of a doomed society behind. written by Chloë Le Bian SC : https://soundcloud.com/joachim-spieth FB : https://www.facebook.com/JoachimSpiethAffin/
As a regular on Michael Mayer’s prolific label, Kompakt, Joachim Spieth has (true to the label’s vision) released a steady stream of emotive house and techno over the past fifteen years. Launching his own label, Affin, in 2008, Spieth has since become a curator and selector for his own specific brand of dark and melodic sounds. In the meantime, we’re pleased here at Monument to present to you a spiraling wormhole through Spieth’s headspace. Enjoy an hour of his finest. Radial is the main pseudonym of Jeroen Liebregts from The Netherlands. Jeroen has been djing since '98 and picked up music production soon after. Since 2002 Jeroen teamed up with Bas Mooy and started the label Audio Assault as a platform for their own work and that of artists whose work they admire. Today, 11 years later, label is still running strong with over 40 vinyl releases and counting. Always driven to dive deeper, Jeroen started a 4-year studies of Sonology at the Conservatory in The Hague, which he finished in 2006. This study deals with electronic music composition, computer programming, analog synthesis and electronic instrument design among other things. This is probably what kickstarted his interest to use self designed instruments in his music. The constant quest for new technological approaches is an imported factor that helped shape his sound. His current tendency toward analog hardware based methods also resulted in his involvement in the design and development of the Synton Fenix modular synthesizer. Over the years the music of Jeroen Liebregts has found it's way to many places using different aliases. There have been releases of original tracks and remixes on labels such as Token, Perc-Trax, Mote-Evolver, Numb, Drumcode, Planet Rhythm, Audio Assault and most recently Mord. Jeroen Liebregts aka Radial, is without doubt a gigantic stone in the modern techno industry with numerous of legendary productions and gigs at the best record labels and clubs. Welcome to episode #016 of Lehmann Podcast! This week I’m glad to present you a set by Joachim Spieth. Former a resident of Stuttgart he is now hailing from Berlin, where he runs his label Affin as well as it’s vinyl offspin Affin LTD. Active since 1995, Joachim has become a true pillar of the electronic community, releasing on labels ranging from Kompakt to Paso Music. Just now Rebekah included his Track „Nevermind“ in her contribution to CLRs new „Mind Set“ mix & compilation series. Joachim Spieth(@joachim-spieth) is the founder of the German techno label Affin. His career started with one of the earliest releases on Kompakt, a record label that has contributed with paramount influence in the electronic music landscape. With more than 15 years in the scene he has managed to build a record label that many associate with quality and variety ranging from house to techno. His upcoming release on the label is Aiden 12”, featuring remixes by Samuel L Session and Arnaud Le Texier. This release and others has also gained support by artists like Bas Mooy, Derrick May, Chris Liebing, Ben Klock, Alan Fitzpatrick just to name a few! For more news and updates visit his website at http://joachimspieth.de/. The next hour will be spent listening to an array of tracks showcasing different atmospheres that leaves you craving for more! We hope you enjoy this weeks podcast, and don't forget to follow Monument for more techno, art, and upcoming events! Q & A Q: You must at one time have had a vision about how Affin should be, tell us about it A: The idea for an own label was present long time before Affin started. The main reason was just to release whatever i wanted. Moreover i like the idea of being independent from others opinions and after some years of releasing and working on several labels i felt fine to go for it. Q: Are you getting closer to your vision? A: Yes, for sure. The Affin 100 compilation was a turning point for the label. In the last 2 years the the label focussed on releasing techno. Q: What are your thoughts on the techno scene today? A: Compared to the time when i started releasing music (1999) a lot of things changed (otherwise it would be sad, ha ha). With developments of software and DAWs it’s easier/cheaper to start producing music. This caused a crowded market and especially on download shops you can see a lot of crap is being sold. Q: How do you spend your time when you are not producing, managing or djing? A: I don't have much time besides from it. I try to relax and easy my mind. :) Q: Finally, if music was not your carrier what could have been your alternative career? A: I’m not sure. https://www.facebook.com/pages/JOACHIM-SPIETH/33219177020 https://www.facebook.com/MonuMnt
