Despite the steady increase in annual sales of vinyl records since 2008, record stores across the country have been closing — except in Denver! The Mile High record store scene is as strong as ever. We've got new shops popping up and old favorites like Wax Trax expanding to new locations. Record Store Day, aka Black Friday for music lovers, is this Saturday, April 12, so host Bree Davies is sitting down with Denver Post arts and entertainment reporter John Wenzel to talk about how Denver is bucking the national trend and where you can get all the special releases. For a full list of participating record stores across the state, see Record Store Day's official roundup. Bree mentioned Wax Trax's “rules” for Record Store Day. For more on the Vinyl Me Please saga, check out John and Bree's previous conversation on City Cast Denver. What's your favorite record store in Denver? Are you going to be there on Saturday? Legendary artist and pioneering music producer Luc Van Acker might have made music history, he doesn't do nostalgia. With a career spanning over four decades, he has instinctively moved between solo projects; bands like Revolting Cocks, Ministry, Front 242, Arbeid Adelt! & many more and offered up cult collabs and genre-bending productions. His fearlessly fun, self-proclaimed 'insane', and experimental M.O. has navigated industry politics and backroom machinations for the longest time, yet he remains ahead of the wave, forever optimistically searching for new sounds. On this episode, Luc and Dominique retrace his journey—from self-producing his first solo record in his bedroom to in-person straight-talk with William S. Burroughs and birthing industrial music together with Richard 23, Al Jourgensen and Wax Trax! Records. He shares how experimenting with the first samplers put Belgian producers on the global map and why names like Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails and Slipknot's Joey Jordison cite him as an inspiration. Luc also tells stories of how he got through his darkest days and what led him to his current 'Twin Peaks' -ish happy place. But not before he divulges how he roped himself into his first gig with Shriekback, what 80's Chicago was like and, of course, the inception of Revolting Cocks. The debut LP of Wax Trax sleaze peddlers extraordinaire, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, is the subject of this month's commentary podcast. Between the duo of Buzz McCoy and Groovie Mann getting in on the ‘darkened 60s psychedelia' angle years before it went mainstream, to their placement within Wax Trax and industrial music overall in the late 80s, to the more restrained (and dare we say tasteful?) sounds which crop up in the band's early work, there's plenty to discuss.
It's Friday, and we're rounding up the biggest stories of the week. First, after winning re-election in a landslide last week, State Senator Chris Hansen just announced that he's is leaving his seat for a big payday in the private sector. But questions are swirling: Why such bad timing? And are the Dems making backroom deals to replace him? Then, mega-millionaire Kent Thiry's ranked choice voting ballot measure went down in flames, but his work tweaking Colorado's elections process may be far from over. Producer Paul Karolyi and host Bree Davies are joined by Denverite's new editor Andy Kenney to talk vacancy committee shenanigans, money in elections, a reality TV contractor's allegedly shoddy work, your bridge security DIA hack, and more wins and fails of the week. Andy talked about his profile of Kent Thiry for CPR and Wax Trax opening a new location at Stanley Marketplace. Paul talked about Wyatt's Towing, this hilarious piece about HGTV's “Rico to the Rescue,” and Ridley Scott and Paul Mescal adapting a local author's book. Bree discussed an upcoming resource list we're going to be publishing in our newsletter. Subscribe now at denver.citycast.fm! What do you think? Adam X's illustrious music career began in 1990 in Brooklyn, NYC, where he was born and raised. His earliest productions were released during this period, and he quickly gained momentum as one of the most adept DJs on the global underground techno scene. Alongside pioneer and brother Frankie Bones, he opened the doors of Groove Records in Brooklyn as America's first true outlet for underground electronic music with a direct focus on the techno genre. The Groove Records team also took part in organizing the first techno events ever to take place in NYC, including the legendary Storm Rave that started in 1991. Storm Rave was the first all-techno warehouse party organized on the East Coast of America, featuring line-ups with many up-and-coming artists who would later become global techno cult figures. The Sonic Groove label was born in 1995 at the upgraded Manhattan location of the shop (which also changed its name from Groove Records to Sonic Groove during the transition). Adam continues to operate the label in an exemplary and innovative way, with over one hundred releases to date, focusing on an assortment of techno music styles from many well established artists across the electronic music spectrum. A unique perspective and acute knowledge of music can be recognized in his DJ and live sets, which have always retained a unique sense of an uncompromised approach to the dance floor. Adam's approach facilitated acid techno's dominance in the early to mid-nineties, and he nearly single-handedly put the Industrial and EBM Techno cross-over genres on the map for the first two decades of the millennium. Now, Adam returns to his purist techno roots with a hard but deep thought-provoking sound, one combines the past, present and future of this timeless music. His Traversable Wormhole, ADMX-71, The Secret Initiative, Mass-X-Odus, and X-Crashed side-projects, along with his collaboration with co-conspirator U.K.-based artist Perc in their project AX&P, and with his techno life partner Maedon as Maedon-X on Tresor Records, have all strongly impacted the most discerning audiences. Adam X has also released his own work on his seminal imprint, as well as releases on some of the most essential labels to exist, both past and present, such as Wax Trax!, Direct Drive, Magnetic North, Peacefrog, Drop Bass Network, CLR, Hands Productions, as well as preeminent contemporary labels like Aufnahme + Wiedergabe, L.I.E.S, Hospital Production, and Pinkman. Adam currently resides in the electronic music capital of the world, Berlin, Germany. With unparalleled dedication, his activities never cease as he continues his individual tradition of operating on every vital level, from label activity to organizing events in the legendary Tresor club and performing in some of the world's most credible venues—a practice he has maintained since the early '90s. Adam X is a true force whose contribution has reached far into bringing the future forward for electronic music. KMFDM, the multinational musical project from Hamburg, Germany is led by the legendary producer Sascha Konietzko who founded the band in 1984. Their early albums were recorded in Germany before moving to the USA, where they found much greater success with Chicago-based seminal record label Wax Trax ! Throughout the 90's, KMFDM constantly evolved with a revolving door line-up, becoming a household name in the US music scene. Their 1995 hit 'Juke Joint Jezebel' catapulted KMFDM into the Billboard charts and got them onto many movie soundtracks, notably 'Bad Boys' and 'Mortal Kombat'. Bands like Rammstein and Korn had their humble beginnings opening on KMFDM tours. Celebrating 40 years of conceptual continuity in grand style! LET GO marks the group's 23rd studio album, released on Metropolis Records with the core lineup of Sascha “Käpt'n K” Konietzko, Lucia Cifarelli, Andy Selway, and Andee Blacksugar presenting their signature onslaught of pulse-pounding rhythms, scorching electronics, blistering guitars, and vocals full of grit, growl, and grind addressing the social, political, and cultural ills of a world in perpetual turmoil. Their US Tour 2024 begins in March 2024. We try to make these landmark numbered episodes of the podcast something special, and we think we've come through on that account. This week, we're happy to be joined by bass player, Wax Trax legend, and all around thoughtful guy Paul Barker as the release of The Eternal Present, the new Lead Into Gold album, draws close. Paul spoke with us about the particular mood and sound of the new record, how his approaches to LIG and other projects have shifted over the years, and plenty of other topics both musical and philosophical. We're also talking a bit off the top about the recent Ticketmaster vs. The Cure business, and catching The Residents live.
On today's episode, I talk to musician Kate Fagan. Growing up in Wisconsin and then outside DC, Kate made many more stops before ending up in Chicago in the late '70s and early '80s. There she became the Founder and frontwoman of long-running Chicago second wave ska trailblazers Heavy Manners, and on her own, she recorded and self-released the new wave single “I Don't Wanna Be Too Cool, ” which became the best-selling single ever by a local artist at the legendary Wax Trax! Records. 35 years later, Captured Tracks has released an expanded, re-mastered edition of I Don't Wanna Be Too Cool as a full-length album, and it's great! It is fitting that Bruce Adams's new book, the sardonically-titled You're with Stupid: kranky, Chicago and the Reinvention of Indie Music, begins at Jim's Grill off Irving Park Road in the Ravenswood neighborhood on the North Side: It was the first place I remember seeing a promotional poster for this new band, The Smashing Pumpkins, who were regular customers of Bill Choi's Korean-inspired restaurant, when they were first starting out.But let's back up a few years, to set the scene of what was to come. After attending college at the University of Michigan, in Ann Arbor, in the mid-1980s, Adams worked at a record shop and wrote for the fanzine Your Flesh. He caught the indie rock bug, as it were, inspired by the then burgeoning independent music industry that had grown out of labels like Dischord in Washington, DC, Sub Pop in Seattle, and Touch & Go in Chicago, who presented a more artist-friendly path for bands to make a living selling records, CDs and cassettesAdams found his way to Chicago, where, by the mid-1990s, there was a golden age of independent businesses thriving in unison: records labels (Drag City, Thrill Jockey, Atavistic, Bloodshot, Carrot Top), distributors (Ajax, Cargo, Southern), records shops (Reckless, Dusty Groove, Wax Trax, The Quaker Goes Deaf), underground press (the Chicago Reader and New City, but also Lumpen and Stop Smiling), and venues (Cabaret Metro, Lounge Ax, the Empty Bottle, and Double Door). As Adams documents, it was a near-perfect eco-system for creativity and experimentation in a pre-digital age. You're with Stupid is both a cultural history of the Chicago music world at that time, as told through the record labels and distributors that Adams worked for but also a how-to roadmap to founding a DIY operation. This is my conversation with Bruce Adams about his book and those times.Reading by Bruce AdamsMusic by Labradford
“The Last Mile” The Scottish-born Chris Connelly got his start with the electronic outfit Finitribe. Championed by John Peel, the inventive band did a long and harrowing UK in '88 and so arduous that tour was, it led to the shedding of three members, including Connelly, who left for the U.S. and landed in Chicago, where he fell in with the Revolting Cocks and Ministry. Connelly had hung out with the latter's Al Jourgensen in London so he knew him a bit, but once Connelly hit the states, he really immersed himself in the Wax Trax-powered industrial scene. Over the course of his career, Connelly has been affiliated with Pigface, Ministry, The Revolting Cocks, Die Warzau, Acid Horse, KMFDM, The Joy Thieves, PTP and The Damage Manual. And my friends, that's a partial list. His almost thirty album-long solo discography is a knockout, containing classic albums like Whiplash Boychild Shipwreck and Graveyard Sex. His newest effort Eulogy To Christa is a moving, stirring and deeply satisfying homage to Nico. Comprised of covers and original compositions, Eulogy To Christa is a heartfelt tribute to a fascinating artist. www.chrisconnelly.com www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers The Podcast www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com IG: @emberspodcast

Toronto and Montreal based trio, American Lips, have just announced the release of their latest 3-song maxi-single Waste of Crime on Ancient Fashion Records. American Lips features Death From Above 1979 drummer Sebastien Grainger and prolific producer Adrian Popovich, also known for his time in legendary Canadian rock act Tricky Woo. In explaining their newest offering the bands' latest one-sheet asks you to ponder, “Ever wondered what it would sound like if The Art Of Noise produced a Plastic Bertrand record?” To clear up that question Popovich explains, “I spent a good chunk of 1988 listening to the Colors OST and the“Kiss”cassingle by The Art Of Noise and Tom Jones. This older kid Rob on my street who was into punk rock said “the Colors soundtrack is pretty cool but that Art Of Noise song is garbage!” As a nine-year-old, I'd yet to be called out on my questionable musical tastes. Rob made me a mixtape with songs by The Ramones, Misfits, Motorhead, The Buzzcocks and a bunch of other essentials. I'd never heard any punk music before and the impact it had on me was huge. Ffwd to 2022, when Sebastien unilaterally decided to add Fairlight sample horn arrangements to two new American Lips songs, the simultaneous feelings of glorious discovery and deep shame I felt in 1988 came flooding back”. Inspired by Wax Trax! Records, Shep Pettibone, Art Of Noise, and a hot cut from The Ghostbusters OST, American Lips shed the punky garage-wave of their 2017 debut LP “KissThe Void,” and take a hard-drive dumpster-dive, emerging with a kind of “sample-bank pop” -at once danceable, but stylistically hard to pin down (don't call it dance punk!). Double A-sides “Waste Of Crime” and “Labor Of Hate” are backed by extended dub remix“Labor Of Dub.” Fans of mid-80s Cabaret Voltaire, Ghostbusters OST, Decadent Dub Team, Rocket From The Crypt and Plastic Bertrand will rejoice in the exquisite peppering of influences in these new compositions. Hey guys,Remember when being a music fan meant falling in love with a label and collecting every single release? Today we're going to be talking about labels, and the special role they play in the creator economy — past, present, and future. These days, when you hear about record labels, it's usually in the context of a high-profile artist going on social media to speak out about being locked into a terrible deal, or some jaw-dropping headline about how the majors are generating a million dollars of streaming revenue in an hour as artists struggle to make rent. But until relatively recently, record labels — and especially independent record labels — occupied a much more influential position in the zeitgeist. In the years before streaming became the de facto mode of discovery, one could argue that they served as a sort of organizing principle for musical knowledge, crystallizing scenes and movements under a recognizable banner that pointed listeners in the right direction and amplified artists operating outside of the commercial establishment. Think: How Dischord Records nurtured D.C.'s rich hardcore scene, or the role that Mac Dre's Thizz Entertainment played in ushering in the Bay Area Hyphy movement, or how Wax Trax! helped define the sound of Industrial music in Chicago. In the platform era, that feeling of being part of something larger than yourself, and being able to benefit from the support of a community that has your back, can be increasingly hard to come by. Which is why Yancey Strickler, a former music journalist and the co-founder of Kickstarter and The Creative Independent, had something of a eureka moment recently while revisiting Michael Azerrad's groundbreaking chronicle of the 1980s punk and indie scenes, Our Band Could Be Your Life: What if, instead of operating like independent economic agents, vying for our attention, streams, and clicks, artists squadded up and released work together? Before long, Strickler had teamed up with some friends to start Metalabel, an organization that describes itself as a “growing universe of knowledge, resources, and tools that inspire creative collaboration, cooperation, and mutual support.” The group, which includes musician Anna Bulbrook, Etsy co-creator Rob Kalin, designer Ilya Yudanov, developer Lauren Dorman, and collective internet culture expert Austin Robey, has yet to reveal what those tools consist of, or what the business model will be, beyond hinting that the project will involve blockchain in some way. (Austin told The Culture Journalist that the company has plans to become collectively owned.) But, like Other Internet's “Squad Wealth” article and Mat Dryhurst and Holly Herndon's “Interdependence” idea before it, the Metalabel concept offers some useful language for describing a paradigm shift that is clearly already underway. You can see it in how independent artists are teaming up to form DAOs, or media pundits hyping up the so-called “great rebundling.”Naturally, we couldn't help but want to dig deeper into the idea: Whether you're a musician, a writer, a fashion designer, or an activist, how might reframing our creative output as releases on a label free us up from the diminishing returns of the platform economy?Today, we're excited to welcome Yancy and Austin — one of the brains behind the digital musicians' cooperative Ampled, as well as Unnamed Fund and Dinner DAO — onto the show. We discuss what The Whole Earth Catalog, the creative studio MSCHF, and the centuries-old science academy The Royal Society have in common (hint: our guests say they are all examples of a metalabel), Yancey's “Dark Forest Theory of the Internet,” and how trying to keep up with the constant churn of content warps our priorities and values as creative people. Our two album discussion episodes don't get much more down the pipe than this! Two fun and funky EBM records of different stripes are on the docket. First, we're catching up with Randolph & Mortimer via Manifesto For A Modern World, a compilation of their acid, grebo, and Wax Trax indebted instrumental EBM bangers. Next, we're looking over the second record from musically Belgian but geographically Dutch duo The Force Dimension, Deus Ex Machina, which adds a quirky mix of new age, synthpop, and new beat elements to EBM.

MMMMM THAT MANTRA FELT GOOD! And you will feel good listening to the Cannon Bros talk about 1990's "Rockula" with special guest Matt Rubano (Taking Back Sunday, Angels and Airwaves). The movie you can watch and script yourself all at the same time. Tony Basil has some bathtime fun with Tony Cox (Yes, that Tony Basil). Thomas Dolby's fake commercials give the movie a much-needed comedic bump (Yes, that Thomas Dolby). And Bo Diddley will bum you out with how low he will go for a paycheck (my god, yes...that Bo Diddley). And in between, Geoff's Wax Trax radar goes off. Matt tells us how he really feels about musical comedy. Everyone gets disgusted by "bat dork" and Frank gives some tough love to Geoff about finishing that Rockula 2 script that Michael Fassbender will one day win an Oscar for. And...*sigh* Rapula.
This one starts with the typical 80's then dives into some light industrial music for a segment on the Wax Trax label. Not much talking from me, just fun music.

thatboytim Trax in the Wax, an EBM and industrial dance mix from thatboytim. Featuring Wax Trax! Tracklist & more available at Darkfloor.
Odonis Odonis — “Insect”. These guys elevate industrial and punk genre-bending to an almost out-of-body experience. This tracks is so sick, so hard, so absolutely filthy and luscious and steel-tipped and velvet at the same time that I can’t even. (2019)Pigface — “Hips Tits Lips Power”. Pigface at their best: animalistic, id-driven, unrepentant. Your bruises from Lesley Rankine’s pummeling assault is a feature, not a bug. (This is actually a mashup of the original with the Britishit Mix version.) (1992)My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult — “Burning Dirt”. You will never convince me that MLWTTKK’s “Confessions of a Knife” was not the single best Wax Trax! release of all time. (1990)Killing Joke — “Primitive”. This song is a fucking freight train and 40 years later it hasn’t lost a gram of muscle. (1980)Soft Kill — “Cry Now Cry Later”. There is a LOT of emotion to unpack in Soft Kill’s “Savior” album, but this track cuts particularly deep. The guitar mourns and pleads as hard as the lyrics, and the relentless bass never allows time to stop the way you wished. (2018)The Foreign Resort — “Hearts Fade Out”. How massive are the synth washes in this dancefloor killer? As deep as that rubbery bassline, as incendiary as the guitar, as forlorn as the lyrics, as perfect as those handclaps. Why is everyone not listening to this song all the time? (2019)Night Nail — “Hollow Day”. Crooning, wistful post-punk whose backbeat and layered guitar work unloads all kinds of feels. (Also, heads up DJs, it mixes perfectly with “Hearts Fade Out”.) (2018)The Stranglers — “Nice N’ Sleazy”. From their third and most excellent 1978 LP, this bass’n’organ workout conveys, quite literally, what these guys were about and why we love them so hard. (1978)Depeche Mode — “Suffer Well”. This under-the-radar cut from DM’s last meaningful album is the quintessence of their legacy: emotionally dark, eminently danceable, experimental in its sound design and written ~ just for you ~. (2005)Drab Majesty — “Too Soon To Tell”. In 20 years, when much of this decade’s music is rinsed away, Drab Majesty’s second album will retain a featured position in the highlight reel simply for its immediate and inarguable brilliance. (2017)Die Krupps — “Machineries Of Joy (Wahre Arbeit Mix)”. Nothing like a splash of pre-90s Die Krupps to remind you that Jürgen and crew (with some help from Nitzer Ebb) were capable of destroying EBM dancefloors long before they paved the way for industrial metal. (1989)Blind Delon — “Argent”. A primary example of more modern genre-bending, Blind Delon is synthpop, darkwave and post-punk cocktail that is both danceable and headphone-able. (2017)Crash Course In Science — “Cardboard Lamp”. Viciously fun synth punk originally released in 1981 whose grit and off-kilter shuffle-beat feel more relevant than much of the limiter-crushing nonsense of the last few years. (1981)Dryft — “End of the In”. A side-project of Gridlock that, for me, was even more vital. Dryft acted as a Hadron Collider of industrial, drum’n’noise, dub, ambient and emotion that shattered hearts and woofers alike. (2000)
This on the podcast, I talk to Brian from the Gothsicles about Wax Trax! Records, the midwestern industrial music scene, the Boston noise scene and the upcoming Gothsicles shows and albums. We also talk about how he got started making music on his Yamaha QY10 sequencer and his affiliation with the Dr. Dements-inspired FuMP community. Thanks Brian! Special Guest: The Gothsicles.
Nana Beret is back! She's promoting for a new band signed to Wax Trax called Baby Trash; with their new CD "Human Garbage".
U.S. Attorney Jason Dunn has to strike the balance between Colorado's drug laws, Denver's more liberal stance, and the federal policies that still criminalize those substances. Then, we revisit our story about the historic Denver record store Wax Trax as a documentary about the shop hits digital platforms.
This week’s Base Camp Beta, our ninth episode, features Moroccan-born, New York-based special guest Selwa Abd, better known by her musical alias Bergsonist, with bonus appearance by Greg Zifcak aka Wav Dwgs and part of Eats Tapes. We talk the vagaries of sharing and discovering music in the digital era, playing live shows with very little to no prior experience, going out on a Tuesday night to see your friends spin Krautrock records to a crowd of four (yourself included) at bars with names like “Daddy’s,” the encroaching tide of professionalism in underground electronic music, the dearth of actual physical community/social spaces for musicians and music fans, and Pick Up The Flow, a NYC-based attempt to remedy that lack of community, founded by Selwa herself. Music-wise, we talk a classic Wax Trax cut by Dwayne and cEvin from Skinny Puppy with Bill Leeb on vox; Model 500's “Pick Up The Flow,” the inspiration for the previously mentioned DIY sharing community; and contemporary trap and hip-hop from Morocco. Oh, and we talk about Gong. Yeah, Gong. Way to kill the vibe, Shawn. Julia Nash and husband Mark Skillicorn join me this week to talk about their superb documentary film,"Industrial Accident: The Story of Wax Trax! Records." The cultural contributions of Wax Trax! can't be measured (nor can I adequately summarize them here). The best I can do is share some descriptive words about the store and label: Groundbreaking, dangerous, liberating, inclusive, edgy, pulsating, throbbing, relentless... what were we talking about again? Julia is more than qualified to have written and directed the documentary; she's the daughter of late Wax Trax! co-owner Jim Nash. The history of Wax Trax! Records (the store and the label) and its celebrated co-owners, Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher. What was it like growing up around Wax Trax!? The "Retrospectacle" 3-day event at Metro that first gave Julia a hint of how big the Wax Trax! footprint was. TVT Records and the end of Wax Trax! The fundamental differences between Nash and Dannie ("You need that balance; you need that excitement"). How important was Ministry to Wax Trax!? Is Chris Connelly the Wax Trax! MVP? The mainstream artists in the documentary who voice their love and appreciation for Wax Trax!, including Dave Grohl and Trent Reznor. The super cool Wax Trax! Black Box set and Trent Reznor's involvement. Julia Nash is now the "Indiana Jones" of industrial music. Where does Julia go to next with the Wax Trax! brand? What would Jim have thought about having a documentary made about Wax Trax!? Car Con Carne is presented by The Autobarn Mazda of Evanston.

Finitribe special with David Miller in conversation The band formed in Edinburgh in 1984 by Chris Connelly, John Vick, Andy McGregor, Philip Pinsky, David Miller and Simon McGlynn. Initially a post-punk guitar outfit, the band released a debut E.P. Curling and Stretching on their own Finiflex label in the summer of 1984, graduating to their first John Peel Session in 1985 before rethinking their whole approach in the mid 80s. Tired of the conventional drums, bass and guitar set up, they acquired a sampler and began experimenting with electronic music. The result was Let The Tribe Grow, an EP released on the Glasgow label Cathexis and featuring 'De Testimony', a seminal dance floor anthem for the original Balearic/Acid House generation. Subsequently, they signed to Chicago label Wax Trax and released two singles, "I Want More" (a cover of the Can song) and "Make it Internal", raising their profile in the States and resulting in extensive radio and club success. A long and arduous "toilet" tour of the UK in 1988 led to the departure of three members – including Connelly who relocated to the States and joined the Revolting Cocks and Ministry – and a parting of the ways with Wax Trax Records. This in turn resulted in a resurrection of the Finiflex label and a distribution deal with Fast Forward for a long-awaited debut album, Noise Lust and Fun. The band was now made up of Pinsky, Vick and Miller along with various contributions from Little Annie, Rosanne Erskine and Wilf Plum. A series of remix EP's proved their electronic and dance floor credentials and brought indie chart success. The band met and signed a long-term publishing deal with Andy Heath (director of Beggars Banquet and Momentum Publishing), allowing the band to grow and develop without the constant need for advances from record companies. After signing a new deal with One Little Indian the band with encouragement from label boss Derek Birkett ran into controversy almost immediately with the 'Animal Farm' EP. Subverting the nursery rhyme "Old MacDonald" for the purposes of berating the similarly titled hamburger outlet, Finitribe (as they were now known) offered up a flavour of the anti-consumerist stance prevalent on new album Grossing 10k (1989). The subsequent threat of legal action was not exactly helped by a "Fuck off McDonald's" poster and T-shirt campaign. The band continued to develop stronger links with the electronic music world for their next single and album. Andrew Weatherall produced and remixed the single "101" (1991) along with Graham Massey from 808 State. Justin Robertson then worked with the band to remix and produce the singles "Ace Love Deuce" and "Forevergreen" (1992). These singles all featured on the band's most critically and commercially successful album, An Unexpected Groovy Treat (1992), the last album they were to record for One Little Indian. The success of this album allowed the band to re launch their 'Finiflex' label and the in-house production team recorded and released many singles including those by Justin Robertson, State of Flux, Ege Bam Yasi and Sparks. A Finiflex Compilation album And Away They Go was released to critical acclaim in 1993. The band was redeveloping their studio complex in Leith during this period and coordinated all management, recording, press and merchandise from there. After leaving One Little Indian the band further developed their studio complex and looked for a new recording deal. With the assistance of Tom Watkins (Pet Shop Boys, East 17) the band negotiated a deal with Pete Tong at London/FFRR. This deal allowed for the completion of the state of the art recording studio in Leith and facilitated complete independence for the recording of their next album. For the writing and pre-production of the band's fourth album they relocated to a small crofting settlement called Sheigra. near Kinlochbervie in the north west of Scotland. In 1994 the band released the single "Brand New" and although a minor hit the relationship with London/FFRR was cooling. A further single "Love Above" and the album Sheigra were released in 1995. The band followed this with a tour with Sparks and then their own headlining tour of the UK. By early 1996 David Miller and Philip Pinsky split from John Vick, the former continuing with Finitribe and John Vick successfully continuing with the studio complex Finiflex. The slimmed down Finitribe, now operating from house built on the side of a volcano, started a new label U.G.T and released an LP by Acid House maverick Ege Bam Yasi. While looking for a new label and a new singer Finitribe went to Essex to work with former Prodigy collaborator Jason Byrne. The result was the EP Squelch and the meeting up with future producer Witchman(John Roome). For a short while the band hooked up with Chas Smash (Madness) as manager, this indirectly led to a meeting with Korda Marshall and a deal was struck with Infectious/ Mushroom Records(home of Garbage and Ash). Philip and David recruited a band and picked up some guitars and drums. The band's fifth album 'Sleazy Listening' was recorded in Edinburgh with John Roome (Witchman) producing. It featured Paul Haig, Little Annie, Niroshini Thambar, Chris Ross, John Roome and Katie Morrison. The album mixed electronica and live instrumentation and received critical acclaim. Melody Maker stating that, " If Finitribe had lived and worked in Bristol they would have won the Mercury Music prize by now". The album was launched with a sell out gig at The Shooting Gallery, Edinburgh with Davy Henderson's Nectarine No. 9. The band toured the UK with their most successful gigs for several years, headlining the ICA in London. They recorded the first ever John Peel live session and released three further singles for Infectious. This was the band's last album and tour. Their last gig was at a sell out Bath Moles Club in the summer of 1998. Other interests and priorities meant that Philip and David put Finitribe to one side . One more single was released 'Bored' (2000). In January 2014 the band reissued "De Testimony" on limited 12" vinyl and have plans to reissue further classics from their catalogue.

Records. The underground vet brings Chicago's industrial music to Berlin techno. // Growing up in the house music capital of Chicago, one might not expect Karl Meier to make the sort of abrasive industrial techno found on his debut album as one half of Talker (with Johnathan Krohn). But as he tells Rave Curious, the city's industrial scene—famous for the Wax Trax! label, home to Front 242, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult and local legends Ministry/Revolting Cocks/Pigface—had just as much influence as the house heroes like Derrick Carter, DJ Sneak and DJ Heather. The result so far has been a single album for esteemed UK techno imprint Downwards in 2014—not bad for Meier's first release after years working record counters at places like the mythical vinyl emporium Gramaphone. That album lead to key gigs at Berghain and Berlin Atonal Festival, compelling Meier to take the next obvious step and relocate to the German Capital the next year. The Rave Curious podcast caught Meier on his first official U.S. tour to find out how a dance music veteran can go from nearly unknown to underground headliner status after decades of DJing. We also try to make nice with Chicago after dissing the Windy City hard on the recent Boom Bip episode.

The industrial music-heavy festival Cold Waves was started four years ago by Jason Novak (Acumen Nation, Czar, Acucrack, Cocksure) as a way for the community to rally after respected colleague Jamie Duffy took his life in June, 2012. Cold Waves continues to grow and gather momentum each year. This year's event (9/23-9/24 at Metro) is stacked, featuring performances from Meat Beat Manifesto, Clock DVA, The Cocks, Pig, 16Volt and more. The kickoff show on 9/22 at Double Door features nothing less than the 30th anniversary performance of the reunited Stabbing Westward. For this episode, Novak sits shotgun for a trip to the Fulton Market location of taqueria/sandwich shop Cemitas Puebla. To summarize: The tacos are poquito and the cemitas have a grande amount of bread. Over dinner, Novak talks about the evolution of Cold Waves, focusing on the memory of Jamie Duffy ("I think he would have been overjoyed at this"). He says the success of Cold Waves feels bittersweet ("You're constantly reminded that this shouldn't even be happening"). We also talk about Cold Waves kickoff band Stabbing Westward's ascent in the 90s. Novak says, "I remember (Acumen) being the junior version chasing after them." We chat about the 90s scene, industrial music, Wax Trax, Revolting Cocks, and Pop Will Eat Itself. Novak also talks about his charity, Darkest Before Dawn, which aims to provide support to Chicago's service industry and live entertainment workers, people whose schedules and isolation leave them "susceptible to depression, anxiety and suicide."
On this episode of We Have A Technical, Jason Novak joins the senior staff for a chat about the origins and new realizations of the Cold Waves festival in Chicago, his work in reviving the old Wax Trax sound with Chris Connelly as Cocksure, and that certain je ne sais quoi possessed by Severed Heads. All this and more of the usual nonsense on the latest episode of WHaT!

Steve Stoll (USA) - NightVision Techno PODCAST 62 Pt. 2 Bio.: Producing pure, minimalist analogue-minded techno in the vein of early Plastikman and Joey Beltram (even though his career began as a drummer with the industrial label Wax Trax), Steve Stoll has recorded for Nova Mute, Probe, DJax, Delirium, Synewave and his own Proper NYC label. Raised in Brooklyn, Stoll listened to hip-hop and disco as a child, then joined the Army straight out of high-school. He served for five years, including a period in the Gulf War when he plotted bomb runs by satellite. After being released, Stoll shifted around: he played drums for the industrial group Sister Machine Gun, studied jazz and began recording straight-edged techno for Big Apple labels like 212 Productions and Damon Wild's Synewave. Stoll debuted for Sm:)e Recordings with the 1995 album Pacemaker. The following year brought another album, Zero Divide (recorded as the Operator) and an EP for Nova Mute (as the Blunted Boy Wonder). After he reverted back to Steve Stoll, Damn Analog Technology followed in 1997 and The Blunted Boy Wonder one year later. He stopped because of parenthood but now picked up the gear again. “The sleeper awakens” Welcome back for a new episode! Our Guest for this week is Virulent(@ farabee-virulent) (Kevin Farabaugh) from the U.S. Growing up in Northwest Indiana, amidst the desolate ruins of dying steel mills, he took an early interest in electronic music in many forms, ranging from early 90s techno and house sounds being broadcast on the radio waves of nearby Chicago to the darker sounds of industrial artists from that city's Wax Trax! roster. Lately he has put out a release on Dystopian Rhythm, a Detroit-based label focused on the harder, grittier side of techno. Techno you say? Well here is some for you! Artist Name: Mark Farina Web: http://www.djmarkfarina.net/ Biography: Shortly after Mark befriended Derrick Carter in 1988 at a record store in Chicago, his passion for House music, and sharing it with the world, exploded. Mark experimented with a deeper style, dropping De La Soul, disco classics and other stuff that wasn’t being played in the main rooms of nightclubs. While exploring his love for the purist forms of House Music, Mark developed his trademark style: Mushroom Jazz; acid jazz infused with the West Coast’s jazzy, organic productions combined with urban beats. Fans embraced Mark’s downtempo style so much that he started a weekly Mushroom Jazz club night in San Francisco with Patty Ryan. In 3 short years, the club established a fanatical, cult-like following for Farina and the Mushroom Jazz sound. When the doors closed, Farina continued the tradition by releasing a series of Cds on OM Records: simply titled, “Mushroom Jazz”. Since then, Mark has been traveling the globe performing 100s of shows, to over one million club goers, every year. His House sets take fans on journeys to the jazzy side of Chicago House mixed San Fran style. Some of these sets have been known to last up to 8 hours. And sometimes you’ll find Mark playing in two different rooms at the same party, showcasing his range of big room sound to the uber-chill. When Mark’s not touring, you can likely find him in his studio, working on his next release for his imprint, Great Lakes Audio, or on another signature mix for Mushroom Jazz. Mark’s chunky-funky underground house style continually turns the heads of tastemakers worldwide, drawing him not only new fans, but landing him on the Top DJs in the World lists by URB, MUZIK and BPM Magazines. 01. How did you approach the dj profession? Saw DJs playing vinyl in club at age of 15/16 and was interested. 02. Tell us your first time playing in a club? Very first time, my friend, who was a resident DJ at a club I went to regularly was in the middle of his set and told me to get on. I was a nervous wreck. The place was packed with 1000 people. 03. What device do you prefer to use in your live and studio set up? Live in clubs I use CDJ 2000s Pioneer. For production I like Akai MPC-4000. 04. Your Mushroom Jazz saga reached the 7th edition, what can we expect from the next edition? Don't know just yet… Stay tuned! 05. What are you favorite record labels? Coyote Cuts, Classic, Sire, Wax Trax, Transmat, Greenhouse, Sampled, BBE. 06. What lead you to found Great Lakes Audio? Always wanted my own label since I began DJing. Finally made it happen. 07. In your opinion how will electronic music change in the next 10 years? It will always be about good music. 08. What do you love and what do you hate in the DJs life? Love travel, meeting people and seeing new places. Don't like airport delays and bad sound systems. 08. What would you suggest to a beginner DJ? Practice. Practice. Practice. And do your homework. 09. Can you tell us something about your future works? MJ8 this year. Various remixes

Pretty in Pink (Berlin Mix) - The Psychedelic Furs Notes and other random things: A couple weeks back I left a note at the top of my podcast explaining my current bandwidth situation. In short, I pretty much use up my monthly allotment within the first couple days of each month anymore ... and I blame you all! No, really. I do. But, as I said then, it's a great problem to have and I'm so very thankful that you guys tune in like you do to hear these classic retro dance tunes on a frequent basis. The only drawback is that PodOMatic has become pretty strict about allowing DJs to post new episodes if they have gone beyond their bandwidth limitations. What does that mean exactly? Well, first it means I had to change the sub-title of my Podcast. Since its inception I have used the subhead: "An (almost) weekly retro dance experiment." With my current busy schedule, "almost weekly" was a stretch even using a qualifier such as "almost". Now, my window of opportunity is even smaller than before. As such, I altered the subhead to: "80s and 90s retro dance adventures of a boy and a cheap mixer." It's probably a better descriptor anyway as I'm a boy and I own a cheap mixer. Second, it means unless I can scrounge up the roughly $250 per year PodOMatic charges for the next tier of bandwidth, I'm going to be saddled with this problem for the foreseeable future. Third, it means you'll probably be seeing a PayPal donation button appearing on my page very soon. I had the option to remove it in the beginning, which I did, but I'll probably put it back up there in case any of you would like to chip in towards an account upgrade. I don't make any money doing this, nor did I intend to, but I also didn't anticipate the amazing response I've received thus far either. Fourth, I'm also looking into placing some Google AdSense ads onto my page. I know, I think it cheapens everything and makes me look desperate, but if I can convince you guys to click on them when you visit my page, it might go far in helping me upgrade my account, which means I can provide retro goodness to you on a more frequent basis. I should point out that neither begging for donations nor begging for clicks are desirable options, but doing only one new Podcast per month isn't really an attractive option either. All in all, I haven't yet decided how I'm going to handle my current situation, but I'm sure it will become clear as we move closer to 2012. I just wanted you all to be aware of what's transpiring right now. I can say from reading the forum posts that many other podcasters share my predicament and are none too happy because ultimately it's the listeners, the lifeblood of our shows, who end up getting shortshrifted. So, my apologies to everyone on that front. Okay, now that that's out of the way, I can catch you up on some of the artists in this episode. In the meantime, I hope to have another new episode up very soon. Hang tight! Let's start with Harris Glenn Milstead, better known as Divine. This is Divine's first appearance on CRC. I've shied away from his work over the past year and a half so far because I just couldn't find a good segueway for it. Well, that and his stuff is pretty crappy. It's highly derivative schlock that anyone other than a flamboyant drag queen wouldn't be able to get away with. I mean, this is the same guy who somehow got industrial record label Wax Trax! to release his version of The Name Game song (you know: Tintin, Tintin, bo-bintin, Banana fana fo Fintin, Fe fi mo-minton, Tintin!) But this is Divine we're talking about and you'd expect nothing less from a member of John Waters' "Dreamlanders" troupe ... and he delivered every time! I guess that sounds a little harsh if it weren't really the point. Heck, it was Waters, the guy who aspired to make the "trashiest motion pictures in cinema history", who gave Divine his name and enlisted him as the lead in several of his soon-to-be cult films. Those appearances piqued Divine's lust for more fame and fortune, which he would find at the start of the 80s when he delved into the club scene. His "act" consisted of yelling "f*ck you!" at the audience and getting into fisticuffs with a fellow drag queen. In a way, Jerry Springer owes his entire television career to Divine! Pairing up with composer and record producer Bobby Orlando, Divine's live spectacles began to include disco numbers including the song Love Reaction, which appears here. His growing popularity on the club circuit spawned world tours even though Divine admitted at the time not being able to sing a lick as you'll witness first-hand. Orlando had gone about producing an entire album and touring before Divine had even mastered the lyrics. But that didn't stop him as Divine thought that if porn stars could have successful stints in the studio (I'm guessing he meant The Andrea True Connection and that ilk) why couldn't he? Really, though, the music was secondary to the trash, which is perhaps why Divine has been a secondary thought so far on CRC compared to other artists whose focus was the music. Still Love Reaction was the third single to chart on the Dutch Singles Chart and peaked at #25. It also spent 7 weeks on the German Singles Chart peaking at #55. And if you can't quite get enough of New Order's Blue Monday, this is basically the version Divine would have recorded had he been the lead singer, so there's that. Next up is Donna Summer. Though I don't like to discount the possibility of any artist showing up on CRC at any point, I can tell you now, with almost complete certitude, that this will probably be her only appearance. It has nothing to do with her persona or a patent dislike for her music, except for the fact the bulk of her career occurred in the 70s and her hardcore disco sound doesn't exactly fit with what I'm trying to do here. Technically though, Our Love was released in '79, but didn't find massive success until the 12" version was released in 1980. From there it sold over a million copies. The track appeared on Summer's seventh album called Bad Girls, which became her best-selling album of all time as it spawned six different singles including the title track and Hot Stuff. One of the key contributors to Our Love and the Bad Girls album as a whole? Giorgio Moroder (of course!) Moving from Summer to Sumner, New Order's Everything's Gone Green would seem an odd choice to mix into Our Love until you hear the similar electronic undertones. At that point it becomes more of a logical (and rather nifty, if I may say so) choice. In fact (or factus for you New order junkies), New Order have cited Donna Summer as an inspiration for their own work. According to lead singer Bernard Sumner, Blue Monday was heavily influenced by four tracks in particular: Dirty Talk, by Klein + M.B.O.; You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) by Sylvester; Our Love, by Donna Summer; and Uranium by Kraftwerk. As for Everything's Gone Green, it was released originally in 1981, peaking at #3 on the UK Independent Singles Chart and #34 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart. It is supposedly the first New Order track to contain computer-generated sounds and the last of the band's tracks to be produced by Martin Hannett. The song is also responsible for a major labeling gaffe. That's because the b-sides, Cries and Whispers and Mesh, were listed correctly on the record, but in reverse order on the record sleeve. The mistake led to several misidentifications on subsequent New Order album releases. For instance, the song Mesh appears as the third track on disc 2 of the Substance compilation, but should be credited as Cries and Whispers. Strangely, the real Mesh does appear on the cassette version of the album. Pretty dorky, stuff, eh? But where else are you going to find this kind of juicy information ... except maybe on the internet. The lead track, Sea-Missile Motel, by Moev was the first track on their Dusk and Desire album, which was released in 1985. Originally formed in 1981 by keyboardist/percussionist Tom Ferris and keyboardist/vocalist Cal Stephenson, the band released their debut album, Zimmerkampf, in 1982, but was forced to find a new label after San Francisco-based Go! Records went under the following year. Interestingly, in 1984, band member Mark Jowett and manager Terry McBride formed Nettwerk Records in McBride's apartment as a way to release new Moev material. As many of you know, Nettwerk has attained worldwide success in the years since and is home to a musically diverse line-up of artists from Sarah McLachlan to Skinny Puppy. The band went through several personnel changes in the early going, but settled on Michela Arrichiello as lead vocalist during the years surrounding Dusk and Desire and she is the voice you'll hear on this track. Bassist/drummer Kelly Cook, vocalist Dean Russell and keyboardist/percussionist Anthony Valcic would eventually replace many of the early members and would form what is considered to be the classic Moev line-up. In 1988, their highly successful Yeah Whatever album spawned their best-known track, Crucify Me, which, unlike Donna Summer, I can assure you will appear in CRC at some point down the road. Label mates Manufacture further exemplify the eccentricity that graced the Nettwerk Records musical stable. Formed in 1984 by Brian Bothwell and Perry Geyer, the group was originally created as a soundtrack company, making experimental music and video. After performing in front of live audiences, the duo eventually became a band. In 1987, they were signed to Nettwerk and were commissioned to make two full-length albums as well as a variety of 12" dance singles. The song here, New Decisions, comes from the second album, World Control. It was a bit more pop-friendly than their debut, Terrorvision, though Sarah McLachlan did perform vocal honors on the great track, As the End Draws Near. Believe it or not, that song eventually was awarded a platinum single in Canada when it appeared on her album, B Sides, Rarities, and other Stuff. For the record, Brian Bothwell continues to work in the film and video field and also works as a Photographer in New York City. Meanwhile, Perry Geyer continues to produce music and owns and operates CyberSound Studios in Boston and New York City. That's all for this episode. Thanks for listening! Cheers! Note as of 12-18-11: Hello, once again! I'm sending out these notes as a way to fill in the long gap left by my lack of posting a recent episode and as a way to keep you up-to-date on my status. For all the gory details of my recent podcasting travails, read the previous two entries in red below. Despite all the seemingly unfortunate news, this note is to let everyone know I have recorded a new podcast and it's ready to post once my bandwidth resets again in just a few days! (For all the gory details about bandwidth, you can also read below.) Anyway, hang tough, gang - the light at the end of the tunnel is rapidly approaching and I think you're going to find the new podcast was worth the wait. In it there are a LOT of great tunes that you probably have not heard before, plus some very different versions of a couple of old classics. Again, thanks for your patience! DJ Tintin Note as of 12-05-11: Hi, all. Well, what a long, strange hard drive breaking down, no computer for two weeks trip it has been. I am happy to report that I have my computer back and it appears to be functioning just fine. The good news is I can get back to podcasting. The bad news is I have gone over my bandwidth for December already! The good news is I have tracks all selected for my next episode and will record it this week. The bad news I probably won't be able to post it right away. The good news is I will begin work on subsequent podcasts so that when my bandwidth resets once again I can hopefully post several episodes at once. The bad news is I'm hungry so I need to go get something to eat. The good news is you won't have to read anymore of this drivel! You all are the best audience anywhere and I fully appreciate the support and your saint-like patience. Hell, if I were you I probably would have quit listening to me by now. But then I would have changed my mind and would have started listening to me more than ever! Gee, what a swell guy I'd be if I were you. Cheers! Note as of 11-28-11: I meant to post a new episode this past weekend. I really did. Unfortunately, the hard drive on my computer gave out and I'm currently in the process of getting it replaced. Installing a new hard drive is no big deal, but it's trying to save all the data on the old one that is taking some time. The good news is I hope to have my computer back today or maybe tomorrow. The bad news is that I'm already halfway to my bandwidth limit for the month and we're only 4 days in. I just have to hope I can find time to record before I reach my ceiling. Again, I apologize to everyone for the lack of a new episode over the past month. Thanksgiving holidays + no bandwidth + broken hard drive = not good. Hang with me just a little longer! Everything should be back to normal shortly. Cheers, DJ Tintin
Jim and Greg look back at the legacy of the revered Chicago label Wax Trax! Records. They’re joined by influential industrial musicians Paul Barker and Chris Connelly. Later in the show, Jim and Greg review Beyonce's "4".
Dream about Beth; Grant and I head back downtown; bike shop closed; Wax Trax records; 50s-motif McDonalds on LaSalle; feel secure there; drop-by Sessie’s house; looking through more stupid car ads; see movie.
