Sumit discusses how his wife dying  reshaped his views on optimism, differentiating between pragmatic optimism and blind faith. He explores how having an optimistic outlook, although seemingly against his scientific training, aligns with good mental health. "Believing in a better tomorrow is not the same as saying that today is great."We touch on the evolutionary logic behind optimism, the impact of agency on perception, and how alternate histories can inform future thinking. Sumit also reflects on the role of optimism during personal grief and provides insights into his writing process and the broader importance of the arts and humanities. The conversation closes with advice for optimism in younger generations and an emphasis on appreciating everyday human interactions."Postcards from your future self can be more helpful than New Year's resolutions."Transcript and links: https://www.thendobetter.com/arts/2025/5/30/sumit-paul-choudhury-optimism-navigating-lifes-challenges-and-uncertainties-podcastContents:00:19 The Moment That Changed Everything01:08 Embracing Optimism02:58 The Psychology of Optimism04:42 Rational Optimism vs. Pessimism09:39 Alternate Histories and Humility13:20 Leadership and Optimism16:03 Techniques for Optimism20:45 Optimism in the Face of Grief23:40 Teaching Optimism to the Younger Generation26:03 Understanding the Climate Problem28:41 Victorian Sewer Systems: An Underrated Marvel29:41 Debating De-growth Ideas32:07 The Importance of Arts and Humanities34:36 Moonshot Ideas38:33 Existential Risks40:21 Personal Creativity and Writing Process45:58 Current Projects and Life Advice

Sumit Paul-Choudhury shares that in his childhood he somewhat lost faith in mankind after starkly coming to the realization that not everyone is kind, good, and caring. Sumit went on to pursue science, technology, and the future. He became Editor-in-Chief of New Scientist, trained as an astrophysicist, and received a Sloan Fellowship in strategy and leadership from the London Business School. Then his wife died and on that day, he became an optimist. It was a life reset for him and optimism became his area of focus and research. Sumit has now written a book, The Bright Side: How Optimists Change the World, and How You Can Be One. I was raised in an optimistic home and while I side with optimism, I'm also sensitive to the concept of toxic positivity. So I sat down to hear Sumit's story and learn more about his research. He cites that in today's culture, it can feel "darkly glamorous to think it's the end of the world. There is kind of a seduction to it." And yet his research shows that optimism simply breeds more opportunity for us. So he's using his research to help us understand what healthy optimism is and how to harness it consciously and healthfully. When offered a team change, Tash ignored her gut instinct and reluctantly joined a team run by a manager whose working style clashed sharply with her own. Within months, their professional relationship deteriorated, leading to Tash's unexpected firing just two weeks before the company conducted widespread layoffs. Initially painful, this mistake forced Tash to reassess her career direction, ultimately opening the door to writing, entrepreneurship, and creative independence—turning a devastating setback into her favorite mistake. In this episode, we also discuss Tash's insightful critique of technology companies and their unintended contributions to economic inequality, her process of transforming a teenage passion project into a published novel, and practical advice on balancing creativity with financial sustainability. Questions and Topics: What's your favorite mistake? Were there early signs of trouble with your boss, Sumit, or did problems develop later? How did you choose Postmates as your first job after graduating from Wharton? Did your poor relationship with Sumit impact your job performance? Was it hard to trust another company or manager after that experience? Did you ever consider starting your own company again after leaving Postmates? Do entrepreneurs have a responsibility to reduce economic inequality, or is that up to policymakers? What specific mistakes do you see tech companies making right now? What led you to write your article, "How Tech Is Ruining the World"? Can you elaborate on how tech companies like Postmates worsen inequality? What did you mean when you described tech workers as being "incurious about the machine"? Is the tech industry truly improving society or causing greater harm? How should entrepreneurs or policymakers handle technologies that cause harm when scaled? Tell us about writing your book, These Perfectly Careless Things—how did it evolve over time? How do you decide when your writing is finished and ready to publish?

Optimism, irrational though it might be, is central to the human psyche: it gives us an advantage both in everyday life and in the evolutionary race. Sumit Paul-Choudhury joins us to share his theory of rational optimism: possibilism. Without this optimism we would never have survived the unpredictable – and often hostile – world we evolved into. Yet optimism is not reserved for times of extremity. Its benefits manifest throughout our everyday lives: our relationships, careers, bodies and minds. And it will play a critical role in overcoming the challenges of the 21st century. This is a powerful manifesto for hope and a much-needed new perspective on our prospects. He shows how embracing action, imagination and possibility, we can find a path to the bright side, even – perhaps especially – when the future seems dark. Learn more about your ad choices. Today, I am delighted to speak with Alexandre Lin, co-founder and CEO of SumIt Software, a simple, yet sophisticated solution for complex family office accounting. Alex is a second-generation leader of his family's real estate ventures in France and China, and he now dedicates himself to SumIt. Before founding SumIt, Alex was an active investor, advisor, and partner in multiple entrepreneurial ventures, and a management consultant with IBM and Kearney. Alex and his family office are an associate member of FOX and SumIt Software is a FOX technology partner, and we are thankful to have his expertise as part of our membership community. As a G2 rising family leader, Alex has first-hand experience with the challenges of family transitions and of rising-gen members taking over responsibility and control of their family enterprise. He shares his views and experiences with this intergenerational transition process and the factors that make it challenging for the incoming younger generation. One of the key challenges Alex believes G2 leaders face is the ability to make good decisions, especially in the face of incomplete information and fragmented data. He elaborates on this issue, shedding light on the reasons why next-gen owners are challenged by poor visibility and bad data. Alex founded SumIt Software out of frustration with existing solutions he tried to deploy for his own family office. He talks about the specific challenges he encountered and the practical solutions he set out to create with his product. Looking ahead, Alex provides a vision for how technology solutions for the family office space will develop, and offers practical tips for family owners, family office professionals, and wealth advisors on how they should think about and prepare themselves for the changes that will impact the tools they will need and use in their family offices and firms. Enjoy this illuminating conversation with an entrepreneurial G2 owner, technology founder, and forward thinker in the family office technology space.

“There is no curable disease in the universe which has cannot be effectively cured by śilājatu, [but only] when administered at the appropriate time, in combination with suitable herbs and by adopting the prescribed protocol”.~ Caraka Samhitā, authoritative classical Ayurveda textI'm Dylan Smith, an Ayurveda practitioner and educator, and in case you have not heard of Shilajit, it is one of Ayurveda's most revered herbal substances. This potent, mineral-rich resin sourced from rocky mountains is rapidly gaining popularity in Western supplement markets for its purported energising and rejuvenating effects. In this episode, we aim to disrupt the growing fad of shilajit as a dietary supplement in wellness communities. We'll challenge the notion that shilajit—prized in Ayurveda for its potent healing properties—can be casually consumed. Much of what's sold is adulterated or harvested improperly, and often lacks proper purification. We'll explore essential Ayurvedic principles like correct dosage, the right vehicle (anupāna), and a tailored diet (pathya) to balance shilajit's intense qualities and ensure safety and efficacy. When these elements are neglected, shilajit's benefits can be lost—or even become harmful—underscoring the need for proper guidance in its use.My guests include Dr. Sumit Kesarkar, who has spent over two decades harvesting shilajit indigenously across Asia, and the renowned Raju family of Ayurvedic doctors: Vaidya J.R. Raju, Vaidya Pavani Raju, and Vaidya Harsha Raju. Together, we'll offer practical insights on sourcing authenticity, safe usage, and time-tested ways to honour shilajit's role as a powerful rasayana.IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:
