Sumit Arora, VP of Advanced Technology at Ascend Learning, joins the show to unpack the real challenges of turning AI prototypes into production-ready systems. From managing non-deterministic outputs to rethinking the relationship between engineering and product, Sumit shares hard-earned lessons on what it actually takes to build AI that works at scale. If you're navigating how to move beyond experiments and deliver AI products that stick, this episode will give you a clear look at the path forward.Key Takeaways• Scaling AI is not about building smarter prototypes—it's about mastering distributed systems, security, and availability.• The best AI teams combine deep systems engineering with practical product sense.• Traditional software requirements processes won't work for AI. In this episode of Inside the Network, we sit down with Sumit Dhawan, CEO of Proofpoint, one of the largest private cybersecurity companies in the world. With over $2 billion in ARR, Proofpoint protects 85 of the Fortune 100 and is on a bold path toward $5 billion in revenue by 2030.Sumit's journey is a masterclass in modern leadership. Having graduated with degrees in engineering and business from IIT Roorkee, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Florida, Sumit led major business lines at Citrix and VMware, including overseeing VMware's $70 billion divestiture to Broadcom, before making the leap to cybersecurity. In 2023, he joined Proofpoint as CEO and began executing an ambitious strategy: consolidate the sprawl of human-centric security, go deep instead of broad, and prepare the company for its next chapter of growth. In our conversation, Sumit shares why he believes empathy is the most underrated CEO trait, how acting like a founder, even inside large enterprises, shaped his leadership, and what it means to have “Apple Watch governance” under Thoma Bravo. He explains how Proofpoint has evolved from email security leader to a broader platform for human and data protection, including its acquisitions of Tessian (AI-native email protection), Hornetsecurity (MSP-focused email security), and Normalyze (DSPM).Sumit also pulls back the curtain on the AI threat landscape, including how prompt injection attacks are already targeting copilots and agents, why AI is both supercharging attackers and empowering defenders, and how Proofpoint built intent-based detection models to defend against sophisticated zero-link phishing. Finally, he lays out three categories of viable cybersecurity startups today: gap-fillers, AI defenders, and category disruptors, and why the last two are more likely to be successful.Whether you're scaling a cyber startup, selling into the enterprise, or navigating PE-backed growth, this episode is full of hard-earned wisdom from a leader who's operated at every level of the stack.

In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I welcomed back Sumit Johar, CIO at BlackLine, for a timely conversation about how AI is transforming finance operations from the inside out. When we last spoke earlier this year, AI was still in the early stages of enterprise experimentation. Just a few months later, everything has shifted. Sumit shared how AI has moved well beyond pilot programs and into a space where business leaders themselves are actively requesting implementations. What stood out in our conversation was how this change has reshaped the relationship between CIOs and CFOs. The skepticism is fading, and a stronger sense of collaboration is emerging as both sides work together to drive transformation, align strategies, and reimagine outcomes. We explored the growing need for CIOs to be “multilingual”—not in the linguistic sense, but in their ability to navigate both technology and business. It's no longer enough to speak in code or technical jargon. CIOs must understand finance workflows, end-to-end processes, and the operational pressures CFOs face every day. This alignment is critical when evaluating how and where to deploy AI. Sumit also unpacked some of the core challenges around AI integration, including data quality, long-term sustainability, security, and ethical use. Unlike previous SaaS waves, AI adoption carries more complex risk vectors. Demos might impress, but real-world deployments demand rigorous controls, responsible governance, and the right culture. The conversation covered the ongoing build versus buy dilemma, why it's context-specific, and how BlackLine approaches those decisions with long-term scalability in mind. Sumit also shared how internal councils and cross-functional collaboration have helped guide AI strategy across the organization. If you're leading digital transformation or building the next phase of AI integration in your finance or IT teams, this episode offers clear, experience-driven insights. What's your organization doing to prepare for AI not as a concept, but as a day-to-day operational reality?

He explores how having an optimistic outlook, although seemingly against his scientific training, aligns with good mental health. "Believing in a better tomorrow is not the same as saying that today is great."We touch on the evolutionary logic behind optimism, the impact of agency on perception, and how alternate histories can inform future thinking. Sumit also reflects on the role of optimism during personal grief and provides insights into his writing process and the broader importance of the arts and humanities. The conversation closes with advice for optimism in younger generations and an emphasis on appreciating everyday human interactions."Postcards from your future self can be more helpful than New Year's resolutions."Transcript and links: https://www.thendobetter.com/arts/2025/5/30/sumit-paul-choudhury-optimism-navigating-lifes-challenges-and-uncertainties-podcastContents:00:19 The Moment That Changed Everything01:08 Embracing Optimism02:58 The Psychology of Optimism04:42 Rational Optimism vs. Pessimism09:39 Alternate Histories and Humility13:20 Leadership and Optimism16:03 Techniques for Optimism20:45 Optimism in the Face of Grief23:40 Teaching Optimism to the Younger Generation26:03 Understanding the Climate Problem28:41 Victorian Sewer Systems: An Underrated Marvel29:41 Debating De-growth Ideas32:07 The Importance of Arts and Humanities34:36 Moonshot Ideas38:33 Existential Risks40:21 Personal Creativity and Writing Process45:58 Current Projects and Life Advice

Sumit Paul-Choudhury shares that in his childhood he somewhat lost faith in mankind after starkly coming to the realization that not everyone is kind, good, and caring. Sumit went on to pursue science, technology, and the future. He became Editor-in-Chief of New Scientist, trained as an astrophysicist, and received a Sloan Fellowship in strategy and leadership from the London Business School. Then his wife died and on that day, he became an optimist. It was a life reset for him and optimism became his area of focus and research. Sumit has now written a book, The Bright Side: How Optimists Change the World, and How You Can Be One. I was raised in an optimistic home and while I side with optimism, I'm also sensitive to the concept of toxic positivity. So I sat down to hear Sumit's story and learn more about his research. He cites that in today's culture, it can feel "darkly glamorous to think it's the end of the world. There is kind of a seduction to it." And yet his research shows that optimism simply breeds more opportunity for us. So he's using his research to help us understand what healthy optimism is and how to harness it consciously and healthfully. My guest for Episode #302 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Tash Doherty, a British-Irish-American author, blogger, and podcaster currently based in Mexico City. A graduate of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Tash previously worked in analytics for Postmates and Vox Media. Episode page with video, transcript, and more Today, she is the creator of Miss Educated—a popular blog and podcast covering business, pleasure, and women's health. Tash is also the author of the coming-of-age young adult novel These Perfectly Careless Things, self-published in 2023. She gained viral attention on TikTok by openly sharing her experiences with birth control. Fresh out of Wharton at age 23, Tash joined Postmates in San Francisco, working in analytics. When offered a team change, Tash ignored her gut instinct and reluctantly joined a team run by a manager whose working style clashed sharply with her own. Within months, their professional relationship deteriorated, leading to Tash's unexpected firing just two weeks before the company conducted widespread layoffs. Initially painful, this mistake forced Tash to reassess her career direction, ultimately opening the door to writing, entrepreneurship, and creative independence—turning a devastating setback into her favorite mistake. In this episode, we also discuss Tash's insightful critique of technology companies and their unintended contributions to economic inequality, her process of transforming a teenage passion project into a published novel, and practical advice on balancing creativity with financial sustainability. Questions and Topics: What's your favorite mistake? Were there early signs of trouble with your boss, Sumit, or did problems develop later? How did you choose Postmates as your first job after graduating from Wharton? Did your poor relationship with Sumit impact your job performance?
