The Flagship Podcast is back with a football overload show as Horns247's Chip Brown and Taylor Estes discuss the latest news surrounding the Longhorns, starting with the major addition from the transfer portal with Texas landing the commitment of All-SEC safety Jalen Catalon. The Flagship weighs in on how crucial this transfer portal commitment is for the Longhorns and what it means for the secondary in 2023, in addition to how super-senior offensive lineman Christian Jones announcing his return to the Longhorns for a sixth season impact the offensive line in 2023 and beyond. The Flagship then shifts focus to the 2023 early enrollees already on campus, including all four five-star signees — Arch Manning, Anthony Hill, Cedric Baxter and Johntay Cook — and what to expect from the early enrollees as they transition to the next phase of their football careers playing for the Longhorns. Locked On Longhorns - Daily Podcast On Texas Longhorns Football & Basketball
After the Georgia Bulldogs knocked off the TCU Horned Frogs 65-7 in the National Championship, two questions came across my mind. Is Texas ready for the SEC, and what do the Longhorns need to do to be able to perennially compete with the Georgia Bulldogs led by Kirby Smart and the Alabama Crimson Tide led by Nick Saban. John Garcia Jr., Director of Football Recruiting at Sports Illustrated, joins the show to discuss what needs to happen over the next few years for Texas to put themselves in that class with the two biggest powerhouses currently in College Football. We've seen transcendent quarterbacks in the past like Trevor Lawrence, Jameis Winton and Deshaun Watson be able to transcend the more talented roster they were going against (atleast in the case of Watson & Lawrence). Is Arch Manning the quarterback for Texas that can expedite this "rebuild" and put them into national championship contention. Kirby Smart and Nick Saban are the two premier coaches in college football currently. For Texas to get to where they want to go, Steve Sarkisian is going to have to find a way to add his name to that elite group. Does he have the ability to? We discuss the addition of Jalen Catalon from Arkansas via the portal, what other positions of need that the Longhorns need to address via the portal, and how important is the next receiver coach hire by Steve Sarkisian in lieu of Brennan Marion's decision to leave the 40 acres and accept the Offensive Coordinator position at UNLV. Locked On Longhorns - Daily Podcast On Texas Longhorns Football & Basketball
Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns filled a huge need in the transfer portal when they got the commitment from Jalen Catalon, former safety for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Catalon attended Mansfield Legacy High School in Texas but ultimately chose the Razorbacks over staying home. Four years later, his path leads him back to the 40 acres for a final chapter of his collegiate journey. With Anthony Cook having played his last game for Texas, there was a huge void at the safety position. Not only does Catalon fill a need, but if he can stay on the field, he is undoubtedly one of the best players at his position in the country. John Nabors from @LockedOnRazorbacks stops by the show to tell us everything we need to know about Catalon. Nabors watched every snap he took at the University of Arkansas and has plenty of insight to share with us about the talented safety. Last night, the National Championship took place and it was ugly. The Georgia Bulldogs led by Stetson Bennett beat the TCU Horned Frogs and Max Duggan 65-7. This same TCU team beat Texas in DRK earlier this season in a game that wasn't even as close as the score would indicate. This Georgia team isn't going anywhere. Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide will still be a force to be reckoned with until he retires. Programs like Ole Miss, LSU, and Florida seem to be on the upswing. Texas isn't joining the SEC with Oklahoma to be a middle of the pack team, they want to compete for championships. Based on what we saw last night from Georgia, Texas has a long way to go before they can even think about knocking that team off the throne. Texas adds a HUGE pickup from the transfer portal in Jalen Catalon from Arkansas. Catalon was an Associated Press 1st-Team All-SEC performer in 2020, but has been plagued a shoulder injury in 2021 and 2022. If healthy, this is an instant upgrade and force multiplier for the Texas defense. John Nabors reacts to the reports of Travis Williams being hired as the new defensive coordinator for the Razorbacks, why the idea of what he brings to Arkansas is exactly what Sam Pittman needs on his team, the transfer portal takes Jalen Catalon & Isaiah Nichols away from the Hogs, why would big time players look to leave great situations in college football, and has NIL truly caused major harm to the landscape of CFB? Jalen Catalon is one of the best defensive backs Arkansas has seen in quite some time. He's the first Razorback DB to make First Team All-SEC since Chris Houston in 2006. And he's already joined Ken Hamlin and Kenoy Kennedy as the only Hog safeties to ever be named an All-American. But his fight to bounce back from injury is just as important as his quest to be one of the all-time greats. Catalon missed the Hogs' final seven games—including the Outback Bowl win over Penn State—in what was shaping up to be a stellar sophomore season. But Catalon knows what it takes to bounce back. He's dealt with injury and disappointment before, tearing his ACL and missing nearly his entire senior season at Mansfield Legacy High School in Texas. In this episode, Hogs Plus senior contributor Clay Henry talks to Catalon about his recovery from injury, working to get better, and how he hopes to take his place alongside some of the all-time Razorback greats.
Dan Mathews is back for another episode! He talks about Georgia's dominance at the NFL Scouting Combine. He also talks about Jayden Daniels' surprise decision to transfer to LSU. Plus, Jim Harbaugh has his eyes on a national title at Michigan. Lance Zierlein of NFL.com to recap the action from Indianapolis. Also, we get a preview of Arkansas Razorbacks spring practice with John Nabors of 103.7 The Buzz in Arkansas. Dan closes out the show by talking about a pretty nice flex by Nick Saban at Alabama. Texas A&M will have one of the better run games in the SEC, but I must get past Barry Odom and the Arkansas defense in Arlington. A veteran bunch returning eight starters from last season, the hogs feature one of the better pass defenses in the SEC, and a quality linebacker corps of a 1-2 combination. Should that intimidate the Aggies whatsoever? He's only been a full-time starter for a year, but Jalen Catalon has already become a fan favorite for his big plays—and even bigger hits. The redshirt freshman is already invoking memories of some of the safeties to ever play for the Razorbacks: Names like Atwater, Kennedy, Hamlin and Bua. And it's with good reason. Catalon is the first SEC freshman since Eric Berry in 2007 to record at least 86 tackles and three interceptions in a season. And if 2020 was a full, 12-game season, there'd be several freshman records in jeopardy. But, like the season, Catalon's journey has been anything but normal. Just like at Arkansas, Catalon got off to a fast start at the high school level, setting a school record for tackles in just his third game. He would play both safety and quarterback as a junior, earn Texas defensive player of the year honors, and earn a 4-star ranking. But then, just one game into his senior season, a torn ACL ended his high school career, one which some said could have been among the best in the state's storied history. It was devastating. Catalon's ‘why' is to be one of the best. And if he has his way, this is a story that's just getting started.
