Alabama "Preview" Starts at 1:00 Welcome to the utterly meaningless bowl game we are less excited for than any Michigan game before. Now that we're paying the players, shouldn't they be expected to complete the season? Contracts would do that. Is Alabama interested in showing up? They have a few players like Milroe who need to show something. Michigan's offense was bad to begin with so what are they now? Jadyn Davis should play at least. Glorified spring game bits: looking forward to seeing Andrew Sprague, the running backs. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP]  2. Portal: Offense Starts at 19:59 Mikey Keene is a floor, played with Dillon Gabriel (and Chip Lindsay) at UCF so it's not the first time he's been with a talented dual-threat. Thrown a LOT of passes, can loft one downfield, isn't a run threat, was probably a scramble after Billy Edwards didn't want to compete with Bryce. When do you start Bryce, because Game 2 is in Norman and Game 3 is in Lincoln. They got OL Brady Norton who's an addition to the 2023 class, Donaven McCulley we like as that downfield threat. Wanted to see more WRs and a TE and better luck at OL: Josh Thompson chose LSU. 3. Portal: Defense Starts at 43:50 Hot takes segment has ideas for retaining the Outback Bowl legacy. Damon Payne is a very good pickup even though he's not flashy because DTs are a premium position and he's a decent SEC player. Troy Bowles was in a stacked LB room, comp is Hausmann. Metcalfs played at Chip Lindsay's high school in Pinson, Alabama, TJ is a high floor for the safety position and Tevis is a developmental cornerback. Don't have any glaring needs. Discussion of Barham's move to edge—think it's a Jaylen Harrell position thing in the 5-2, which is more about holding the edge than rushing it. Always get a 5th year cornerback, but they can get that on the cheap later in the process. 4. Basketball vs WKU/PFW and Big Ten Outlook Starts at 1:04:48 After the Oklahoma loss that we're STILL MAD about, the threes are falling, which makes this team utterly terrifying. WKU chose not to defend the perimeter, had a lot of injuries, and PFW was also super small up front so those are not great tests. Good news: Big Ten doesn't have a lot of NBA guards who can tear them up by driving. USC-UCLA road trip next week will be fascinating—USC is a bunch of power forwards even with T-Will out for the season and UCLA is all defense. Our focus was singular: to explore the stress and irritation shoved onto resort employees charged with mask-police duty. As I wrote at the time:One of the biggest risks to the reconstituted-for-Covid ski season was always going to be that large numbers of knuckleheads would treat mask requirements as the first shots fired in Civil War II. Schweitzer, an enormous ski Narnia poking off the tip of the Idaho panhandle, became the most visible instance of this phenomenon when General Manager Tom Chasse chopped three days of twilight skiing after cantankerous Freedom Bros continually threw down with exhausted staff over requests to mask up. While violations of mask mandates haven't ignited widespread resort shutdowns and the vast majority of skiers seem resigned to them, Schweitzer's stand nonetheless distills the precarious nature of lift-served skiing amidst a still-raging pandemic. Skiers, if they grow careless and defiant, can shut down mountains. And so can the ski areas themselves, if they feel they can't safely manage the crowds descending upon them in this winter of there's-nothing-else-to-do. While it's unfortunate that a toxic jumble of misinformation, conspiracy theories, political chest-thumping, and ignorance has so thoroughly infected our population that even something as innocuous as riding a chairlift has become a culture war flashpoint, it has. And it's worth investigating the full story at Schweitzer to gauge how big the problem is and how to manage it in a way that allows us to all keep skiing. We did talk about the mountain for a few minutes at the end, but I'd always meant to get back to Idaho's largest ski area. In 2022, I hosted the leaders of Tamarack, Bogus Basin, Brundage, and Sun Valley on the podcast. Now, I'm finally back at the top of the panhandle, to go deep on the future of Alterra Mountain Company's newest lift-served toy. What we talked aboutThe new Creekside Express lift; a huge new parking lot incoming for the 2024-25 ski season; the evolution of the 2018 masterplan; why and how Schweitzer sold to Alterra; the advantages of joining a conglomerate versus remaining independent; whether Schweitzer could ever evolve into a destination resort; reflecting on the McCaw family legacy as Alterra takes control; thoughts on the demise-and-revival of Black Mountain, New Hampshire; the biggest difference between running a ski resort in New England versus the West; the slow, complete transformation of Schweitzer over the past two decades; the rationale behind the Outback Bowl lift upgrades; why Schweitzer's upper-mountain lifts are mostly fixed-grip machines; whether Alterra will continue with Schweitzer's 2018 masterplan or rethink it; potential for an additional future Outback Bowl lift, as outlined in the masterplan; contemplating future frontside lifts and terrain expansion; thoughts on a future Sunnyside lift replacement; how easy it would be to expand Schweitzer; the state of the ski area's snowmaking system; Schweitzer's creeping snowline; sustained and creative investment in employee housing; Ikon Pass access; locals' reaction to the mountain going unlimited on the full Ikon; whether Schweitzer could convert to the unlimited-with-blackouts tier on Ikon Base; dynamic pricing; whether the Musical Carpet will continue to be free; discount night-skiing; and whether Schweitzer's reciprocal season pass partners will remain after the 2023-24 ski season. Why I thought that now was a good time for this interviewUntil June, Schweitzer was the third-largest independent ski area in America, and just barely, trailing the 3,000 lift-served acres at Whitefish and Powder Mountain by just 100 acres. It's larger than Alta (2,614 acres), Grand Targhee (2,602), or Jackson Hole (2,500). That made this ever-improving resort lodged at the top of America the largest independent U.S. ski area on the Ikon Pass.Well, that's all finished. Once Alterra dropped Idaho's second-largest ski area into its shopping cart in June, Schweitzer became another name on the Denver-based company's attendance sheet, their fifth-largest resort after Palisades Tahoe (6,000 acres), Mammoth (3,500), Steamboat (3,500), and Winter Park (3,081).But what matters more than how the mountain stacks up on the stat sheet is how Alterra will facilitate Schweitzer's rapidly unfolding 2018 masterplan, which calls for a clutch of new lifts and a terrain expansion rising out of a Delaware-sized parking lot below the current base area. Schweitzer has so far moved quickly on the plan, dropping two brand-new lifts into Outback Bowl to replace an old centerpole double and activating a new high-speed quad called Creekside to replace the Musical Chairs double this past summer. Additional improvements include an upgrade to the Sunnyside lift and yet another lift in Outback. Is Alterra committed to all this? The company's rapid and comprehensive renovations or planned upgrades of Palisades Tahoe, Steamboat, and Deer Valley suggest that they will be. Alterra is not in the business of creating great day-ski areas. They are building destination ski resorts. Schweitzer, always improving but never quite gelling as a national bucket-lister, may have the captain it needs to finally get there. What I got wrongI asked Chasse if there was an “opportunity for a Snowcat operation.” There already is one: Selkirk Powder runs day-long tours in Schweitzer's “west-northwest-facing bowls adjacent to the resort.”Why you should ski SchweitzerAllow me to play the Ida-homer for a moment. All we ever hear about is traffic in Colorado. Traffic in the canyons. Traffic in Tahoe. Traffic at Mount Hood and all around Washington. Sometimes, idling amid stopped traffic in your eight-wheel-drive Chuckwagon Supreme Ultimate Asskicker Pickup Truck can seem as much a part of western skiing as pow and open bowls. But when was the last time you heard someone gripe about ski traffic in Idaho? Probably never. Which is weird, because look at this:Ten ski areas with a thousand-plus acres of terrain; 12 with vertical drops topping 1,000 feet; seven that average 300 inches or more of snow per season. That's pretty, um, Epic (except that Vail has no mountains and no partners in this ripper of a ski state). So what's going on? Over the weekend, I hosted a panel of ski area general managers at the Snowvana festival in Portland, Oregon. Among the participants were Tamarack President Scott Turlington and Silver Mountain GM Jeff Colburn. Both told me some version of, “we never have lift lines.” Look again at those stats. What the hell?Go to Idaho, is my point here, if you need a break from the madness. The state, along with neighboring Montana, may be the last refuge of big vert and big snow without big crowds in our current version of U.S. America.Schweitzer, as it happens, is the largest ski area in the state. It also happens to be one of the most modern, along with Tamarack, which is not yet 20 years old, and Sun Valley, with its fleet of high-speed lifts. Schweitzer sports what was long the state's only six-pack (until Sun Valley upgraded Challenger this year), along with four high-speed quads. Of the remaining lifts, all are less than 20 years old with the exception of Sunnyside, a 1960s relic that is among the last artifacts of Old Schweitzer.Chasse tells us on the podcast that the ski area could add hundreds of acres of terrain simply by moving a boundary rope. So why not do it? Because the mountain, as it stands, absorbs everyone who shows up to ski it pretty well.A lot of the appeal of Idaho lies in the rough-and-tumble, in the dented-can feel of big, remote mountains towering forgotten in the hinterlands, centerpole doubles swinging empty up the incline. But that's changing, slowly, ski area by ski area. Schweitzer is way ahead of most on the upgrade progression, infrastructure built more like a Wasatch resort than that of its neighbors in Idaho and Washington. But the crowds – or relative lack of them – is still pure Idaho.Podcast NotesOn Schweitzer's masterplan Even though Schweitzer sits entirely on private land, the ski area published a masterplan similar to those of its Forest Service peers in 2018, outlining new lifts and terrain all over the mountain:Though that plan has changed somewhat (Creekside, for instance, was not included), Schweitzer has continued to make progress against it. Alterra, it seems, will keep pushing it down the assembly line.On the Alterra acquisitionIn July, I hosted Alterra CEO Jared Smith on the podcast. We discuss the Schweitzer acquisition at the 53:48 mark:On Alterra's megaresort ambitionsWithout explicitly saying so, Alterra has undertaken an aggressive cross-portfolio supercharging of several marquee properties. Last year, the company sewed together the Palisades and Alpine Meadows sides of its giant California resort with a 2.1-mile-long gondola:This year, Steamboat will open the second leg of its 3.1-mile-long, 10-passenger Wild Blue gondola and a several-hundred-acre terrain expansion (and attendant high-speed quad), on Mahogany Ridge:Earlier this year, Alterra announced a massive expansion that will make Deer Valley the fourth-largest ski area in America:Winter Park's 2022 masterplan update included several proposed terrain pods and a gondola linking mountain to town:If my email inbox is any indication, New England Alterra skiers – meaning loyalists at Stratton and Sugarbush – are getting inpatient. When will the Colorado-based company turn its cash cannon east? I don't know, but it will happen. On Mt. WittierChasse learned how to ski at Mt. Wittier, New Hampshire. I included a whole bit on this place in a recent newsletter:As far as ski area relics go, it's hard to find a more captivating artifact than the Mt. Whittier gondola. While the New Hampshire ski area has sat abandoned since the mid-1980s, towers for the four-passenger gondola still rise 1,300-vertical feet up the mountainside. Tower one stands, improbably, across New Hampshire State Highway 16, rising from a McDonald's parking lot. The still-intact haul rope stretches across this paved expanse and terminates at a garage-style door behind the property. Check it out:Jeremy Davis, founder of the New England Lost Ski Areas Project, told me an amazing story when he appeared on The Storm Skiing Podcast in 2019. A childhood glimpse of the abandoned Mt. Whittier ignited his mad pursuit to document the region's lost ski areas. Years later, he returned for a closer look. He visited the shop that now occupies the former gondola base building, and the owner offered to let him peek in the garage. There, dusty but intact, sat many, or perhaps all, of the lift's 35 four-passenger gondola cars. It's still one of my favorite episodes:A bizarre snowtubing outfit called “Mt. Madness” briefly operated around the turn of the century, according to New England Ski History. But other than the gondola, traces of the ski area have mostly disappeared. The forest cover is so thick that the original trail network is just scarcely visible on Google Maps. The entire 797-acre property is now for sale, listed at $3.2 million. The gondola barn, it appears, is excluded, as is the money-making cell tower at the summit. But there might be enough here to hack the ski area back out of the wilderness:Which would, of course, cost you a lot more than $3.2 million. Whittier has a decent location, west of King Pine and south of Conway. But it's on the wrong side of New Hampshire for easy interstate access, and we're on the wrong side of history for realistically building a ski area in New England. On the seasonal disruption of hunting in rural areasChasse points to hunting season as an unexpected operational disruption when he moved from New England to Idaho. If you've never lived in a rural area, it can be hard to appreciate how ingrained hunting is into local cultures. Where I grew up, in a small Michigan town, Nov. 15 – or “Deer Day,” as the first day of the state's two-week rifle-hunting season was colloquially known – was an official school holiday. Morning announcements would warn high-schoolers to watch out for sugar beets – popular deer bait – on M-30. It's a whole thing. On 2006 SchweitzerIt's hard to overstate just how much Schweitzer has evolved since the turn of the century. Until the Stella sixer arrived in 2000, the mountain was mostly a kingdom of pokey old double chairs, save for the Great Escape high-speed quad, which had arrived in 1990:The only lift from that trailmap that remains is Sunnyside, then known as Chair 4. The Stella sixer replaced Chair 5 in 2000; Chair 1 gave way to the Basin Express and Lakeview triple in 2007; Chair 6 (Snow Ghost), came down for the Cedar Park Express quad and Colburn triple in 2019; and Creekside replaced Chair 2 (Musical Chairs), this past summer. In 2005, Schweitzer opened up an additional peak to lift service with the Idyle Our T-bar.While lifts are (usually) a useful proxy for measuring a resort's modernization progress, they barely begin to really quantify the extreme changes at Schweitzer over the past few decades. Note, too, the parking lots that once lined the mountain at the Chair 2 summit – land that's since been repurposed for a village. On Schweitzer's proximity to Powder Highway/BC mountainsMany reference materials stop listing ski areas at the top of America, as though that is the northern border of our ski world. But stop ignoring that big chunk of real estate known as “Canada,” and Schweitzer suddenly sits in a far more interesting neighborhood. The ski area could be considered the southern-most stop on the Powder Highway, just down the road from Red and Whitewater, not far from Kimberley and Fernie, skiable on the same circuit as Revelstoke, Sun Peaks, Silver Star, Big White, Panorama, and Castle. It's a compelling roadtrip:Yes, there area lot more ski areas in there, but these are most of the huge ones. And no, I don't know if all of these roads are open in the winter – the point here is to show the overall density, not program your GPS.On Alterra's varying approach to its owned mountains on the Ikon PassAlterra, unlike Vail, does not treat all of its mountains equally on the top-tier Ikon Pass. Here's how the company's owned mountains sit on the various Ikon tiers:On cheap I-90 lift ticketsI've written about this a bunch of times, but the stretch of I-90 from Spokane to the Idaho-Montana border offers some of the most affordable big-mountain lift tickets in the country. Here's a look at 2022-23 walk-up lift ticket prices for the five mountains stretched across the region:Next season's rates aren't live yet, but I expect them to be similar. On Alterra lift ticket pricesI don't expect Schweitzer's lift tickets to stay proportionate to the rest of the region for long. Here are Alterra's top anticipated 2023-24 walk-up lift ticket rates at its owned resorts:On Bogus Basin's reciprocal lift ticket programI mentioned Bogus Basin's extensive reciprocal lift ticket program. It's pretty badass, as the ski area is a member of both the Freedom Pass and Powder Alliance, and has set up a bunch of independent reciprocals besides:The Storm explores the world of lift-served skiing year-round. Barry Alvarez concluded his 32nd year at the University of Wisconsin in 2021, including his 18th as Director of Athletics and after serving as head football coach for 16 seasons (1990-2005). Alvarez served as A.D. and football coach from April 1, 2004 to Jan. 2, 2006. Alvarez announced his retirement on April 6, 2021 and concluded his championship career leading the Badgers on June 30, 2021. Learn more about his three decades of excellence. Wisconsin Athletics has been transformed since Alvarez's arrival in January of 1990. What was once a department that was in debt and struggling for fan support and to compete in the Big Ten is now a nationally-recognized brand with broad-based success and a legendary following. At the heart of that revival has been the football program. Prior to 1990, UW had played in a total of six bowl games. In the four seasons before Alvarez took the reins, the Badgers had compiled a 9-36 (.200) record. However, in just his third season in Madison, Alvarez led Wisconsin to the first Rose Bowl victory in school history. Since that season, the football team has played in 26 bowl games (including a Big Ten-best 19 straight) and won six Big Ten titles. Prior to Alvarez's arrival, the school record for wins in a season was nine, last accomplished in 1901. Since 1993, UW has won at least 10 games 13 times. One of just 16 football coaches in Big Ten history to win at least 100 games at one school, Alvarez retired from coaching after the 2005 season as Wisconsin's all-time winningest coach with a record of 119-74-4 (includes two games as acting head coach – 2013 Rose Bowl and 2015 Outback Bowl). He led the Badgers to three Big Ten titles, three Rose Bowl victories and coached one of the school's two Heisman Trophy winners, running back Ron Dayne (1999). Alvarez was voted into the state of Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame and the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 2009, the College Football Hall of Fame and UW Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010, and the Orange Bowl Hall of Fame in 2016. Alvarez was named Director of Athletics following Pat Richter's retirement and officially took over the position on April 1, 2004. He spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons in the dual roles of Director of Athletics and head football coach. On July 28, 2005, he announced that the upcoming football season would be his final one as head coach and he would transition to serving solely as Director of Athletics at the conclusion of the season. Wisconsin has enjoyed remarkable success during Alvarez's tenure at the head of the athletic department, winning a combined 16 team national titles and 74 conference regular-season or tournament crowns. In 2017-18, he earned Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year honors. In addition to the sustained success of the football program, which has appeared in six New Year's Six bowl games since 2010, Wisconsin has experienced consistent success across the board in Alvarez's 18 years as Director of Athletics. The men's basketball team has played in 15 NCAA tournaments, including back-to-back Final Fours in 2014 and 2015, and won five Big Ten titles (three regular season and two tournament crowns). Alvarez has been a part of an unprecedented run of success in football and men's basketball. Since 1993-94, when Wisconsin won its first Rose Bowl Game, the Badgers have made a combined 49 appearances in bowl games (26) and NCAA men's basketball tournaments (23), the most in the country (Florida and Texas are tied for second with 46 combined appearances). Prior to 1993-94, Wisconsin had played in six bowl games and two NCAA tournaments. The women's hockey team has won six NCAA titles and opened a new home, the state of the art LaBahn Arena, in 2012. The volleyball team has made 12 NCAA tournament appearances, advancing to the national title match in 2013 and 2019, and enjoys one of the nation's best home-court advantages in the newly-refreshed UW Field House. The men's cross country team has won 14 Big Ten titles, two NCAA championships (2005 and 2011) and opened the country's top venue, the Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course, in 2009. In Alvarez's 17 previous seasons as A.D., Wisconsin has finished among the top 30 in the NACDA Director's Cup 15 times, including 16th-place finishes in 2006-07, 2016-17 and 2018-19 (second-best in school history). Six different programs have won national titles during Alvarez's tenure, including four in the magical 2005-06 season. Fourteen different teams have been crowned as conference champions, including five each during the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2012-13 and 2014-15 seasons.

Fleck was named head football coach at Minnesota on January 6, 2017. Fleck, 41, is the 30th head coach in the program's history. He has a career record of 65-45 and is 35-23 at Minnesota. In five years, Fleck has established himself as one of the most successful coaches ever to lead the Minnesota program. Fleck is already sixth in program history in overall wins (35) and Big Ten wins (21), and eighth in games coached (58). Fleck's .603 win percentage is third best among the 11 Minnesota coaches with at least 45 games under their helm behind only Henry L. Williams (.786, 1900-21) and Bernie Bierman (.716, 1932-41, ‘45-50). Fleck and Williams are the only two Gopher coaches to record nine or more wins in a season twice, as Minnesota posted 11 wins in 2019 and nine in 2021 under Fleck (Williams posted at least nine wins in six straight seasons from 1900-1905). The 11 wins in 2019 were the most for a Minnesota team since 1904 when that year's team went 13-0 under Williams. Fleck is 3-0 in bowl games and those three wins are tied with Glen Mason (3-4 bowl record during his time coaching the Gophers from 1997-2006) for the most in school history. Fleck guided the Gophers to a 6-3 Big Ten record in 2021 and a 7-2 mark in 2019, making him the first Minnesota coach since Murray Warmath (1960, 1961 and 1967; six wins each) to win at least six conference games more than once.At Minnesota, Fleck has coached three All-Americans (Antoine Winfield Jr., Rashod Bateman and Mohamed Ibrahim), eight Academic All-Americans (Blaise Andries three times, Sam Renner twice, Jack Gibbens, Payton Jordahl and Gary Moore) and 268 Academic All-Big Ten performers. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2019, paced Minnesota to two top-10 wins (Penn State and Auburn) in the same season since 1956 and led Minnesota to its first New Year's Day bowl win (2020 Outback Bowl against Auburn) since 1962. He has also led Minnesota to a 3-0 record in bowl games and has had 12 players selected in the NFL Draft while at Minnesota. In 2021, Fleck also became a Wall Street Journal best-selling author when his Row The Boat book, which was co-authored with Jon Gordon, peaked at No. 2 on the list in June. On the field in 2021, Fleck led Minnesota to a 9-4 record and a second place finish in the Big Ten West division with a 6-3 mark. The Gophers beat Wisconsin for the first time at home since 2003 to reclaim Paul Bunyan's Axe and picked up a postseason win against West Virginia in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. Minnesota's dominant defense and offensive depth were the stories of the season, as the Gophers won their final three games of the year for the first time since 1973. The Gophers ended the season with the nation's No. 3 total defense (278.8 yards per game) and the nation's No. 6 scoring defense (17.3 points per game). Minnesota also ended the year ranked fourth in first downs defense (202), eighth in rushing defense (97.5) and eighth in passing yards allowed (181.2). Minnesota held eight opponents to 14 points or less and recorded its first shutout (30-0 road win at Colorado) since 2006 (62-0 against Temple) and its first road shutout of a Power 5 opponent since 1977 (21-0 at Illinois). On offense, the Gophers boasted the most experienced offensive line in the nation and were a force rushing the ball, despite losing All-American Mohamed Ibrahim in the first game of the season and playing much of the season without five scholarship running backs. Still, the Gophers were the only team in the nation to have five different running backs all record at least one 100-yard rushing game. In total, Minnesota rushed for 2,575 yards and 27 touchdowns and passed for 2,106 yards and 12 scores. In 2020, Fleck guided the Gophers to a 3-4 record as Minnesota played an all-Big Ten schedule in the midst of the global Covid-19 pandemic. The Gophers posted wins road wins at Nebraska and Illinois and beat Purdue at home. They suffered overtime setbacks at Maryland and at Wisconsin. The season was highlighted by Big Ten Running Back of the Year Mohamed Ibrahim, who set school records in season rushing yards per game (153.7), consecutive 100-yard rushing games (8) and touchdowns in consecutive games (8). He tied school records in most rushing touchdowns in a game (4), most rushing touchdowns in a first half (4), most rushing touchdowns in one half (4) and consecutive 200-yard rushing games (2). Ibrahim, who was named AP Third-Team All-America, rushed 201 times (25th most in school single-season history) for 1,076 yards (23rd most in school single season-history) and 15 touchdowns (most ever for a junior at Minnesota and ranks fourth in school-single season history) in the abbreviated and unusual season. He led Big Ten in the following categories: rushing attempts (201), rushing yards (1,076), rushing yards per game (153.7), rushing touchdowns (15), scoring (90), points per game (12.9) and all-purpose yards per game (168.4).In 2019, Fleck led Minnesota to historic heights as the Gophers won 11 games for the first time since 1904. Minnesota also won seven Big Ten games for the first time in school history, beat two top-10 teams, won a Jan. 1 bowl game and ended the season ranked No. 10.Fleck was voted Big Ten Coach of the Year by his fellow conference head coaches and was named AFCA Region 3 Coach of the Year. He was also named a finalist for the George Munger Award, Dodd Trophy, Eddie Robinson Award, Bear Bryant Award and AFCA National Coach of the Year.Minnesota won four Big Ten games by at least 20 points for the first time since 1934 and beat No. 5 Penn State at home and No. 9 Auburn in the Outback Bowl. That was the first time that Minnesota beat two top 10 teams in the same season since 1956. It was also the first time that Minnesota won a Jan. 1 bowl game since 1962. The Penn State win was Minnesota's first win against a top-five team since it beat No. 2 Penn State on the road in 1999. It was Minnesota's first home win against a top-five team since it beat No. 1 Michigan 16-0 in 1977. The Outback Bowl victory against Auburn was Minnesota's best ranked nonconference win in school history. The Gophers ascended to No. 7 in the AP Poll, which was the team's highest ranking since it was No. 5 on Nov. 19, 1962. Minnesota was also ranked No. 8 in the College Football Playoffs, which is its highest CFP ranking in school history. The Gophers ended the year ranked No. 10, which was their best ranking to end a season since 1962. Minnesota averaged 34.1 points per game, which was the third most in school history. The Gopher defense allowed only 306.6 yards per game, which was the fewest since 1977. On offense, Minnesota was led by quarterback Tanner Morgan (All-Big Ten Second Team), running back Rodney Smith (All-Big Ten Second Team) and receivers Tyler Johnson (All-Big Ten First Team) and Rashod Bateman (All-Big Ten First Team). Johnson and Bateman became the first teammates ever to both be named All-Big Ten First Team wide receivers. Morgan set a slew of single-season school records, including passing yards, passing touchdowns and consecutive games with a touchdown. Smith rushed for more than 1,000 yards and became Minnesota's career leader in all-purpose yards. Johnson set single-season school records in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns and left Dinkytown as the school's career record holder in receiving yards and touchdowns. Bateman was named Big Ten Receiver of the Year and was one of 12 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award as he set program records for a sophomore in receiving yards and touchdowns. Minnesota's defense was anchored by Antoine Winfield Jr. (All-Big Ten First Team) and Carter Coughlin (All-Big Ten Second Team). Winfield was named the program's seventh Unanimous All-American and was one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award, which is presented to the best defensive player in the nation. He led Minnesota in tackles and tied a school modern-era record with seven interceptions. Coughlin ended his career as one of the best to ever wear the Maroon and Gold, and he ranks third all-time in sacks and fourth in tackles for loss.In 2018, Fleck led Minnesota to a 7-6 record and regular-season wins against Wisconsin, Purdue, Indiana, Fresno State, Miami (Ohio) and New Mexico State. The Gophers beat Georgia Tech 34-10 in the Quick Lane Bowl and the 24-point margin of victory was the largest bowl win in school history.Minnesota also made history when it won the final game of the regular season (Wisconsin) and its bowl game (Georgia Tech), as that was the first time ever that the Gophers won the final game of the season and a bowl game. Under Fleck, a young Minnesota team beat rival Wisconsin for the first time since 2003 and for the first time on the road since 1994 to claim Paul Bunyan's Axe. The Gophers also downed Purdue's potent offense, as they held the Boilers to a season low in points (10) and yards (233). Minnesota also beat Fresno State, which finished the season ranked No. 18, to give the Bulldogs one of their two defeats om the season. The win against Fresno State also marked the first time that Minnesota beat a team ranked in the final AP poll since 1999. The Gophers had 112 players on the roster and 58 (51.7%) were freshmen, which was the most in the nation in 2018. The Gophers had 78 underclassmen (69.6%), which ranked tenth in college football.Fleck played two freshmen quarterbacks (Zack Annexstad, Tanner Morgan) and both threw for more than 1,200 yards and seven touchdowns. Minnesota's two leading rushers (Mohamed Ibrahim, Bryce Williams) were both freshmen and three of Minnesota top-four receivers (Rashod Bateman, Chris Autman-Bell, Demetrius Douglas) were freshmen. On defense, freshman Terell Smith led Minnesota with eight pass breakups. Minnesota set a program record as eight Gophers were named Big Ten Player of the Week (record was tied in 2019), and Tyler Johnson became the first Minnesota receiver ever to record 78 catches, 1,169 yards (single season school record) and 12 (single season school record) touchdowns in a season. In 2017, Fleck led a young and inexperienced Gopher squad, as 49 of Minnesota's 110 players (44.5%) were freshmen or redshirt freshmen and 76 (69%) were underclassmen. Fleck guided Minnesota to a 5-7 record and those five wins were the most by a first-year Gopher head coach new to the program since the legendary Murray Warmath won seven games in 1954. Fleck won his Gopher debut against Buffalo, which made him the school's first head coach to win his debut since John Gutekunst in 1986 (before Fleck, Minnesota's six most recent head coaches all lost their first game). Minnesota then posted a dominating 48-14 win at Oregon State, which made Fleck the first Gopher coach to win a true road opener since 1954 when Warmath and the Gophers won 46-7 at Pittsburgh. Minnesota's 34-point win at Oregon State was the Gophers' 11th largest margin of victory in a road game since 1920 and largest since 2006. The 48 points were the most the Gophers scored on the road since they beat Northwestern 49-21 in 1980. Minnesota posted three 30-point wins in 2017, as it beat Oregon State by 34, Nebraska by 33 and Middle Tennessee by 31. The last time Minnesota won three games by 30 points in the same season was 2005 when it started the year with three straight with three straight 30-point winsThe Gophers beat Nebraska 54-21 in Fleck's first season. The 54 points were the most that the Gophers scored in a Big Ten game since they beat Indiana 63-26 in 2006. The 54 points were the 14th most scored by Minnesota since 1946 and the fifth most against a Big Ten opponent in the same timeframe. Off the field, Fleck and his team can often be found supporting the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital and annually host a diaper drive during training camp and a turkey drive during Thanksgiving to give back to the community. Minnesota has also hosted a canned food drive and school supplies drive under Fleck. In the classroom, Minnesota has posted program record GPAs under Fleck.Fleck came to Minnesota after spending four years as the head coach at Western Michigan, where he was 30-22 overall and 21-11 in the Mid-American Conference. While leading the Broncos, Fleck authored one of the most memorable turnarounds in college football history. The Broncos were 1-11 in his first year in 2013, but ended the 2016 season with a No. 12 ranking, a 13-1 record, a conference championship and a berth in the Cotton Bowl. The Broncos were 12-0 in the 2016 regular season and posted wins against Big Ten opponents Northwestern and Illinois. Fleck then led his team to a 29-23 win against Ohio in the Mid-American Conference championship game before ending the season with a narrow bowl game defeat to Wisconsin. Fleck was named MAC Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2016 and in 2016 he the Broncos to their first MAC Championship since 1988. Earning FBS Region 3 Coach of the Year from the American Football Coaches Association, Fleck was also named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson Award and the George Munger Award after Western Michigan became the first team in MAC history to win each of its eight league games by 14 or more points. Fleck turned Western Michigan into a pipeline for the NFL as well, as seven of his players were taken in NFL Drafts.Fleck coached receiver Corey Davis and offensive lineman Taylor Moton while at Western Michigan. Davis, who was the first Consensus All-American in Western Michigan history, caught 91 passes for 1,427 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2016. He ended his career with 5,212 yards in four seasons, which made him the Football Bowl Subdivision all-time career receiving record holder. Davis, who was selected fifth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, joined Randy Moss as the only Mid-American Conference receiver to be drafted in the first round. Moton signed one of the NFL's most lucrative contracts (four-year, $72 million) for an offensive lineman in July 2021. Off the field, Western Michigan had a program-record seven student-athletes named to the 2016 MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete team and the Bronco team posted a 3.14 program GPA in Fleck's last semester at the school. Prior to his time at Western Michigan, Fleck served as the wide receivers coach for the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012 and coached the receivers at Rutgers from 2010-11. He coached receivers and was the recruiting coordinator at Northern Illinois in 2009 and tutored the receivers for the Huskies from 2007-08. Fleck's coaching career began at Ohio State as a graduate assistant in 2006. Fleck played receiver at Northern Illinois from 1999-2003 and helped lead the Huskies to a No. 10 ranking, a 10-2 record and wins against Maryland, Alabama and Iowa State in his final season. He ranks in the top five in Northern Illinois history in career receptions (179) and receiving yards (2,162). Fleck holds the school record for punt returns (87) and ranks second in punt return yards (716). He earned First Team All-Mid-American Conference in 2003 and was named Academic All-MAC and Second Team CoSIDA Academic All-American. He graduated in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. Fleck played the 2004-05 seasons with the NFL's San Francisco 49ers. He signed with the 49ers as a free agent in 2004 and spent most of his time on the practice squad before seeing action against New England late in the season. He spent the 2005 season on the injured reserve roster and in 2006 he stopped playing professionally and started his coaching career. Fleck and his wife, Heather, have four children, Gavin, Carter, Paisley (P.J.) and Harper.

Jalen Catalon is one of the best defensive backs Arkansas has seen in quite some time. He's the first Razorback DB to make First Team All-SEC since Chris Houston in 2006. And he's already joined Ken Hamlin and Kenoy Kennedy as the only Hog safeties to ever be named an All-American. But his fight to bounce back from injury is just as important as his quest to be one of the all-time greats. Catalon missed the Hogs' final seven games—including the Outback Bowl win over Penn State—in what was shaping up to be a stellar sophomore season. But Catalon knows what it takes to bounce back. He's dealt with injury and disappointment before, tearing his ACL and missing nearly his entire senior season at Mansfield Legacy High School in Texas. In this episode, Hogs Plus senior contributor Clay Henry talks to Catalon about his recovery from injury, working to get better, and how he hopes to take his place alongside some of the all-time Razorback greats.

For Barry Odom, Arkansas—and coaching alongside Sam Pittman—is the place to be. Odom has helped Pittman engineer an incredible turnaround at Arkansas, and has helped a once-maligned defense turn into one of the better units in the country. After the Razorbacks gave up more than 30 points per game for five straight seasons, Odom's 2021 group allowed less than 23 a game to rank in the top half of the SEC. And perhaps no game showcased the improvement more than the win over Texas, when the Razorbacks smashed the Longhorns all over the field. The Razorbacks bookended that performance with a second-half shutout of Penn State in the Outback Bowl, setting the stage for more to come. In this episode, Arkansas radio analyst Quinn Grovey sits down with the Hogs' DC to talk about his unit's improvement, working alongside Sam Pittman, and why the Razorbacks are a destination in college football.

How Good Will The Arkansas Razorbacks Be In 2022, Bengals Will Have The NFL's Best Offense, Eagles Have A Lot To Prove, Can Brian Daboll Help Save Daniel Jones Career With The Giants

Arkansas was one of the biggest stories in College Football in 2021, in year two under Sam Pittman the Razorbacks finished with a 9-4 record and an Outback Bowl victory against Penn State. Going into the 2022 College Football season the Arkansas Football program looks to replicate the success they had last year with KJ Jefferson returning at QB the Razorbacks' season will rest heavily on his shoulders along with RB's Raheim Sanders and Dominique Johnson and Oklahoma transfer Jadon Hassellwood looks to fill the void left at WR with the departure of Treylon Burks. JT Sports gives his thoughts on how good Arkansas will be this season and how they'll fare in a loaded SEC West. The Cincinnati Bengals offense was one of the best in the NFL last season despite having the worse offensive line in the league. However, this year, the Bengals revamped their offensive line bringing in Center Ted Karras, Offensive Guard Alex Cappa, and Offensive Tackle La'el Collins to go along with Jonah Williams and Carmen Jackson. The Bengals going into the 2022 NFL season will have one of the best offensive lines in the game and will give Joe Burrow more time to throw and help him potentially put up record-setting numbers according to JT Sports and they could potentially have the NFL's best offense. The Philadelphia Eagles are one of the NFL's most improved teams going into the upcoming season, trading for star WR AJ Brown to pair up with DeVonta Smith and drafting DT Jordan Davis along with LB Nakobe Dean. The Eagles also signed CB James Bradberry and pass rusher Hassan Reddick. With these moves, many people have high expectations for the Eagles but JT Sports explains why he feels people should pump the breaks on Philadelphia as HC Nick Sirianni and QB Jalen Hurts have a lot to prove this season. Daniel Jones has one last opportunity to show the New York Giants that he has what takes to be their franchise QB, but he's struggled to stay healthy and has gotten worse every season since his rookie year. Can new HC Brian Daboll help save Daniel Jones career? --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jtsports/support
