Host Dave Smith and OHR producer Jeff Glover provide context and commentary for this captivating collection. Each year at the Ozark Folk Center State Park, we record many hours of live music. We cherish all of it, but some of these performances stand out as being uniquely interesting or moving. On this episode, OHR producer Jeff Glover guides us through some of the most memorable moments of season one. Featured on this show are: thumb picking guitar Jedi and country music legacy Thom Bresh; OHR guest host, writer, and renowned folk musician Aubrey Atwater; singer-songwriter Wil Maring with award winning guitarist Robert Bowlin; OHR host and our very own Dave Smith; Ozark originals The Lazy Goat String Band; Missouri folk sensations and Ozark originals Cindy Woolf & Mark Bilyeu; Outlaw Country star Malcolm Holcomb with multi-instrumentalist Jared Tyler; Ozark originals The Clark Family; world champion mountain dulcimer master Jeff Hames; writer, auto harpist and singer Bryan Bowers; and Ozark original husband and wife duo Lukas & Eden Pool. In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR host Dave Smith offers a 1975 archival recording of Ozark original musician, educator, country music legacy, and the original keeper of “the vault,” Mark Jones, performing the traditional tune “Arkansas Traveler” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor, and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins presents a profile of renowned Ozark original folk singer Almeda Riddle, the voice of the Ozarks.

Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. On the first day of January, YWCA Tulsa CEO Julie Davis stood at the podium of the Centennial Year Launch program for the upcoming 100th commemoration of the Tulsa Race Massacre. She was there to announce the launch of the nonprofit organization’s Tulsa Triumphs initiative, which is a commitment to eliminate racism through pledges to do things like shop local Black businesses or learn more about our city’s past. The mission of eliminating racism is one of the YWCA’s main goals as a nonprofit organization. Julie joins me on this episode to talk about Tulsa Triumphs and about the tangible ways she and her staff are investing in the Black community as part of their pledge. She also talks about the other ways the nonprofit are working to empower women and help our community flourish. She joined YWCA as CEO in 2017 and leads an organization that started locally in 1914. Seven years later, after one of the worst race massacres in U.S. history occurred, the YWCA opened a center in north Tulsa to provide shelter, hot meals and job training for young Black women who were forced into homeless after at least 35 city blocks were burned to the ground. A decade later they helped women and their families during the Great Depression. They have also focused on helping immigrants who arrive in Tulsa looking for a new start in a new land of opportunity by providing citizenship services, legal services and education like English language classes. Today, that includes the program Flourish Tulsa, which is a partnership between YWCA, TCC, Workforce Tulsa and the City of Tulsa. We feature an article about the program in our February issue and Julie discussed it and more in this zoom conversation recorded in late January.Julie’s a native of Missouri but has called Tulsa home since attending TU for her masters. We talk about her time in Tulsa and why she’s devoted her career to working for nonprofits, and how being a mom of two girls impacts her work. I had a great time getting to know Julie and learning more about her and the important work the YWCA is doing in Tulsa. You can learn more about all their programs, including in health and wellness at YWCATulsa.org. Following that conversation, a new song from Saugeye, which just released their debut album. More on that later. OK, let’s get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Julie Davis. Saugeye is a Tulsa band named after avid fisherman and band frontman Jared Tyler’s favorite catch, a hybrid blend of the walleye and sauger. The band members describe their sound as hybrid roots music, and you can hear it here with the single “Keystone Lillie.” On January 29th, Horton Records celebrated the release of Saugeye’s self-titled debut, which is now available at HortonRecords.BandCamp.Com. Sidenote, Brian Horton will be our guest on the next episode of Tulsa Talks. Here is Saugeye’s “Keystone Lillie.”
Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Jared Tyler of Saugeye!Saugeye is the self-titled debut and collaborative project of veteran Tulsa musicians Jared Tyler, Seth Lee Jones, Jake Lynn, and Casey Van Beek. The band is named after avid fisherman and frontman Tyler’s favorite catch, a hybrid cross of the sauger and walleye. Fittingly, Saugeye’s sound is a unique mix of hybrid roots music: folk, blues, country, and rock blending seamlessly from tune to tune.

The message was delivered on Sunday, April 29, 2018, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Steven L. Williams, Pastoral Care Chaplain, at the Humanist Service. MESSAGE DESCRIPTION Adults do not play nearly enough. We forget that fun, joy, creativity, and silliness bring us closer to our essential nature. Children know this intuitively. They use play for everything. Play not only helps them figure out their world, but who they are and where they fit in that world. If you look at your favorite ways of playing as a child, you may see the roots of what brings you the most joy today. Sometimes we need help remembering how to play. *The service includes music performed by Jared Tyler, guest musician (guitar and vocals). A special charismatic energy always attends the arrival of La Terza Classe, the old time string band quintet from Naples Italy. I’ve rarely seen people who seem so glad to be alive, on the road, playing music. And they were just part of a gathering tribe of visitors on a rapturously gorgeous spring evening this week. Beloved Nashville bass player Dave Roe and drummer Rick Lonow were on hand. Friendly Mike Webb was in the green room too. My good Tulsa-based friend Jared Tyler was in town to play and sing with Malcolm Holcombe. And I even had my own family on hand to supplement my Roots family, with my wife and daughter accompanying relatives from Texas. So the stage was set for a warm and sunny show at the end of a warm and sunny day. In order: Ana Cristina Cash La Terza Classe Kenny & Amanda Smith Malcolm Holcombe
Ozark Highlands Radio is a weekly radio program that features live music and interviews recorded at Ozark Folk Center State Park’s beautiful 1,000-seat auditorium in Mountain View, Ark. In addition to the music, our “Feature Host” segments take listeners through the Ozark hills with historians, authors and personalities who explore the people, stories, and history of the Ozark region. This week, North Carolina insurgent country folk singer/songwriter Malcolm Holcombe performs live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Aubrey Atwater & Elwood Donnelly profile legendary banjo ingenue Lily Mae Ledford, and Mark Jones offers an archival recording of original Ozark dulcimer master craftsman Lynn McSpadden. Malcolm Holcombe may not be a household name to music fans, and that probably suits him just fine. Among his peers however, he’s respected and revered. Holcombe has shared the stage with Merle Haggard, Richard Thompson, John Hammond, Leon Russell, Wilco and Shelby Lynne. Though his instrumentation is nothing new to the singer/songwriter genre (guitar and vocals), Malcolm sets himself apart with honest and touching songs, arranged and crafted from his unique perspective. Malcolm is joined by longtime collaborator Jared Tyler on various stringed instruments and vocals. Renowned folk musicians Aubrey Atwater & Elwood Donnelly profile influential folk music icons Jean Ritchie and the Ritchie Family, as well as explore the traditional Appalachian music and dance that the Ritchie Family helped to perpetuate into the modern American folk lexicon. This episode profiles legendary banjo ingenue Lily Mae Ledford. Mark Jones' “From the Vault” segment offers an archival recording of original Ozark dulcimer master craftsman Lynn McSpadden, performing the traditional tune “Castle Grand,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives.

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, January 6, 2013, during the contemporary service at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION I’ve always been intrigued by Jared Tyler’s song titled “Questions." As we enter 2013, it may be a good time to try to answer some of the song’s questions. I hope you’ll join Jared and me as we explore in words and music both questions and grace for a New Year. Here are some of the lyrics: Are you looking for hello or goodbye? Are you ready for the wind to change? Are you trying for the same old thing? Do you know where you’re going? And how you’re getting there? Are you looking for a chance and a prayer? Can you find your deepest need? Are you holding on to tears with a smile? Have you ever walked a lonely mile? Well is it what you dreamed, or somewhere in between? Can you see the silver light and still see it in the dark? If everything in you has tried can you find out who you are?
