Iain Dale interviews evangelical Christian and Chair of the Ban Conversion Therapy Coalition about whether the UK is going in the right direction on LGBT rights, Jayne's experiences with the Church and coming out and whether Justin Welby is still the right man to be the Archbishop of Canterbury. Due to a technical issue, there are very short periods in which the sound quality changes. The discussion is so insightful, we've left those bits in.
Jayne Ozanne is a prominent gay evangelical who works to ensure full inclusion of all LGBTI people of faith within their faith communities, and within wider society as a whole. She is Director of both the Ozanne Foundation, which works with religious organisations around the world to eliminate discrimination based on sexuality or gender in order to embrace and celebrate the equality and diversity of all, and of the Global Interfaith Commission on LGBT+ Lives, which she launched in December 2020 bringing together hundreds of senior affirming faith leaders from around the world. Jayne was a founding member of the Archbishops' Council for the Church of England (1999 – 2004) and is now once again a member of General Synod where she is involved in campaigning for a range of issues impacting those who are marginalised and excluded. In 2017 she led a debate on the dangers of Conversion Therapy within the Church of England, which resulted in the Synod calling on the government to ban it. In March 2019 she was appointed to the government's LGBT Advisory Panel, from which she publicly resigned in March 2021, highlighting the increasingly “hostile environment” for LGBT+ people and the lack of progress towards a ban on “conversion therapy”. In September 2020 she set up the Ban Conversion Therapy Coalition, which she chairs and which brings together survivor groups, LGBT organisations, faith leaders and academics who are all working together for a ban. She is actively engaged through her writings and broadcasts in helping religious groups develop and promote a positive ethic towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people. As a survivor of conversion therapy, her tag line is “Unashamedly Gay, Unashamedly Christian” and as such works to be a role model for LGBT people of faith. Thanks to her autobiography, Just Love, she is featured as one of Wiki Ezvid's Top 5 Non-Fiction Authors of Books about Christianity.
Today we welcome Jayne Ozanne. Jayne is a former member of the UK government's LGBT advisory panel but sensationally quit 2 years ago because of ministers creating a 'hostile environment for LGBTQ+ people'. Jayne discusses the tories continuous lack of action on their much ‘promised' conversion therapy ban. At the time of release there is still confusion as to whether it will be included in the King's Speech on 7th November 2023. Jayne also exposes a potential queerness at the heart of the Vatican and we dig deep on what it means to be Unashamedly Gay and Unashamedly Christian. We discuss why she resigned from the governments advisory LGBT+ panel, her own experiences undergoing conversion therapy and whether the Pope might endorse gay people. Being LGBTQ+ and a person of faith might appear somewhat at odds with one another. The prejudice and discrimination that's often projected onto members of the LGBTQ+ community by religions all over the world can lead many to turn away from faith. In the UK especially, and with regards to Christianity in particular, more and more people appear to be choosing a different path. In the 2021 census, less than half of the population in England and Wales described themselves as Christian and those with ‘no religion' was the second most common response. However for someone like Jayne Ozanne, faith is something at the centre of her life. She describes herself as a gay Evangelical and works to try and ensure all LGBTQ+ people feel a sense of belonging and inclusion when it comes to their faith. For Jayne, the church must do so much more to make everyone feel included, or it risks creating its own demise. She chats to Liam McConkey and Dougie Robertson in this ITV Pridecast episode about embracing her identity as a gay Christian and wanting to inspire others that a person's sexuality and religion can coexist without having to shun one for the other. One way in which people have often tried to suppress their sexuality in favour of their faith is through the practice of so-called “conversion therapy.” This is an area that Jayne has taken a keen interest in and she is currently the founder and chair of the UK's Ban on Conversion Therapy. The LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall, defines conversion therapy as ‘any intervention that seeks to change a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.' It adds, ‘conversion therapies work towards one goal and that goal is to ‘cure' someone from being lesbian, gay, bi, trans, ace, intersex and/or queer.'The whole issue of conversion therapy gained significant media attention in 2018 when ITV News reporter, Paul Brand, showed that the practice was still taking place in parts of the UK. That led to calls for it to end, with even the Prime Minister at the time, Theresa May, vowing to ban it saying conversion therapy “had no place in modern Britain.”Five years on and three different Prime Ministers, conversion therapy is still not illegal in the UK. There have been delays and u-turns on the policy but in June 2023, the UK Government said a bill was ready to be presented to Parliament. That however, appears to have a significant loophole that would allow conversion therapy to continue if a person volunteered for it. In response, the UK Government says it's “committed to protecting people at risk from conversion practices” and scrutiny of the bill will allow for analysis and the addressing of any “risk of unintended impacts.”For Jayne, the u-turns and delays on a potential ban led her to resign from the government's LGBT Advisory Panel in 2021 due to its slow progress. Having gone through conversion therapy herself, Jayne says this long overdue ban is needed if people are to be finally protected from the harm that the practice can cause. It's a topic that Dougie also has first-hand experience of. He grew up in a fundamentalist religious background which has strict ideals, and being gay certainly wasn't one of them. In an article for The Independent in 2018, Dougie spoke very openly and movingly of spending years trying to ‘pray the gay away' and if he'd been offered conversion therapy he would have taken it. For him now, Christianity is no longer a part of his life but he says he fully supports the work of people like Jayne who are trying to create a much more inclusive church that does not practice or act as the facilitator for conversion therapy.Support networksGalop: the LGBT+ anti abuse charity - it works to support victims and survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence, hate crime, honour-based abuse, forced marriage and conversion therapy. Coming out once is challenging, but Jayne Ozanne describes coming out three times: first as gay, then coming out as Christian to her LGBTIQ+ friends, and finally as evangelical to her Christian LGBTIQ+ friends. In this boundary crossing, Jayne has listened to many stories and engaged in dialogue with faith leaders all over the world, from the Pope to the Archbishop of Canterbury. Through her advocacy, Jayne has steadily cast a more hopeful vision for the church, helping religious groups across the globe develop and promote a positive ethic towards lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people. On her Australian Tour for World Pride, Jayne joins the Dom, Peter and Sue to share her story, explore the difficult territory of division in the church and the hope that can be found in the God who always brings new life to birth, often in surprising ways. The government has committed to banning so-called conversion therapy but announced that the ban would not include trans people. 100 organisations pulled support for the UK's first international LGBT conference, before the government cancelled the event altogether. The government have said that they ”will carry out separate work to consider the issue of transgender conversion therapy further.” But how does that make the LGBTQ+ community feel? Today, we speak to a survivor of so-called trans conversion therapy, a former government adviser, Jayne Ozanne, and the chief executive of Stonewall Nancy Kelley. How should we respond to the Government's proposals to ban 'conversion therapy' in order to lead our churches, defend our freedoms and protect people? One of the challenges churches will be facing when coming out of lockdown is the issue of 'conversion therapy' and the proposals of the Government to ban it, which has the danger of criminalising ordinary gospel ministry in our churches. In God's providence, this webinar has come at a time when the issue has come to the fore with the resignation of Jayne Ozanne and others from the Government LGBTQ advisory group and the Prime Minister's desire to advance a ban on conversion therapy. FIEC National Director John Stevens is joined by Sharon James and Simon Clavert from The Christian Institute to address this challenge and think about how church leaders should respond.
