In the last of our current series – going through the missteps identified in The Plausibility Problem by Ed Shaw – we discuss whether suffering can and should be avoided. We share our own painful experiences and examine why some argue that the suffering of celibate same-sex attracted Christians is a reason to abandon traditional biblical teaching on sexual ethics. We go on to show that suffering is a normal part of following Jesus, whether you're gay or straight, single or married. We look at some of the reasons why God allows us to suffer and the joys and benefits that we receive precisely because we suffer. We also look at practical things that help us when we're struggling and ways that we can use our pain to love and serve others.Resources mentioned and relatedThe Plausibility Problem Ed ShawThe Plausibility Problem: A Review Steve WardSupport to Grieve Anne WittonYou Only Live Once. In this episode we discuss how the Bible upholds the view that men and women have absolutely equal value and dignity, looking at how Jesus treated women and recognising the role that women played in his ministry and the growth of the early church. We also contrast Jesus' example of servant leadership with some of the power struggles in church and society today. We suggest how we can push back against gender stereotypes and promote body positivity to value the diverse experinces, interests and skills of both genders. We also discuss the genuine differences between women and men which mean that we aren't simply interchangeable, and look at how we can work in cooperation rather than competition with each other.Resources mentioned and relatedThe Plausibility Problem Ed ShawThe Plausibility Problem: A Review Steve WardWhat Should We Do With Gender Stereotypes?  Andrew BuntWhat Do ‘Man' and ‘Woman' Mean? Why are we afraid of talking about sexuality, especially when sharing our faith? Probably because many people today see religion as oppressive to their sexuality, and, by extension, their personal identity. However, today's guest suggests that marriage and sexuality is one of the quickest routes into telling people about how much Jesus loves them and the hope He offers them.Ed Shaw is the pastor of Emmanuel City Centre in Bristol and leads the team behind www.livingout.org. Director of Public Policy Mark Spencer talks with Rev. Geoff Lin. Geoff is, amongst other roles, the SA/NT Regional Director for the Australian Fellowship of Evangelical Students (AFES) and chairs the steering committee for Living Hope SA—a ministry that supports individuals, families and churches in regards to sexuality and LGBT+ issues.* After getting feedback on the impact of Christian schools on students in South Australian universities, Mark and Geoff talk about the work of Living Hope SA in the lives of those struggling with same-sex attraction. Geoff unpacks some of the theology and pastoral concern around LGBT+ issues, and provides some real life examples of the care that can be provided. They also briefly touch on the potential impact of “conversion practices” ban legislation on these sort of ministries. During the discussion a book by the celibate same sex attracted Anglican minister, Ed Shaw is mentioned. There is one question we never ask: What is sex for? Glen talks to Ed Shaw, Pastor of Emmanuel City Centre in Bristol and co-founder of Living Out. They are an organisation committed to seeing Christians living out their sexuality and identity in ways that enable all to flourish in Christ-like faithfulness. As a same sex attracted Christian, Ed encourages us to look beyond just seeking fulfillment in heterosexual marriage alone or embracing a lifestyle and identity that goes against scripture. He encourages us to embrace the better story the bible tells us about sexuality.Ed Shaw's new book, Purposeful Sexuality, can be found here: https://ivpbooks.com/purposeful-sexualityThe website Living Out can be found here: livingout.orgSpeak Life is a UK based charity that resources the church to reach the world. "Most of all I want a transparently biblical vision of inclusion to be shaping how the church welcomes and accepts me - rather than the ever-changing views of society around me. I don't want to be included on the basis that cultural attitudes have changed but on the basis of the timeless Gospel that Jesus Christ self-sacrificially brought into this world," - Ed Shaw.Today, in the lead up to the Liberty Conference, Ed Shaw is our guest as we tackle four key words: orientation, identity, change and origins. Ed is a pastor at Emmanuel City Bristol UK and is a founder of www.livingout.org. He speaks about his personal journey of faith, what it means to be included because of the Gospel and how we can create biblically faithful inclusive churches.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/thepastorsheart)
