In this episode, Mollie and Jack discuss a very hard-to-access Facebook group in which Mancunian women warn each other about who not to date. The group seems like an important safety mechanism for a generation of women who do a lot of their dating via apps, meeting complete strangers rather than dates who are friends of friends. But does the group always stick to its stated premise? Many thanks to Brsk for sponsoring this episode. Brsk is a new independent broadband provider whose engineers are installing lightning-fast internet connections across the south of Greater Manchester. If you live in Stockport, Didsbury, Chorlton, Withington, Sale, Stretford or the Heatons (check out the ever-expanding map of coverage) you can now get your broadband via 100% fibre optic cables, with more areas like Wilmslow, Hale and Altrincham coming online soon. This project has been in the works for at least 20 years and offers unconditional and permanent housing to anyone who may need it. A new book expands on the importance of this new building and the services it offers. HomeGround: The Story of a Building That Changes Lives was authored by Simon Wilson. Rector's Cupboard, on the road! We travelled to Calgary this summer and met some amazing farmers. In this episode we talk to Marcus and Sarah Reidner from Happiness By the Acre, a regenerative farm in Didsbury, Alberta. Marcus and Sarah have cows, chicken, pigs, and ducks but they say what they really grow is grass, because that's what the land wants to do. Along with meeting some great animals, we also talked about climate change, the necessity of death, and why Marcus and Sarah have chosen to farm in about the most difficult way possible. Hopeful Christian theology will help us towards a healthy relationship with the land. Marcus and Sarah taught us a lot, even in this short visit. We cannot say enough about the hospitality and generosity that we encountered in Calgary. Marcus and Sarah welcomed us to their farm, answered all of our questions, were generous with their time, and even shared some of their amazing chicken and duck eggs. If you are in the Calgary area we highly recommend looking them up.

It's a warm welcome back to UFO researcher, author and publisher Philip Mantle on this weeks show as we uncover some of the UK's lesser known UFO encounters from history. Philip's new book has tens of fascinating cases that many people may not be aware of and we discuss some of my favourites from the book including a personal favourite case from 1961 when two teenagers see a strange whose occupant isn't very friendly. We meet a Dame who has no time for the MOD's excuses, a family who have two encounters within a week, visit the former UFO hotspot of Warminster and much, much more. There are so many brilliant accounts in the book, with witness statements, newspaper cuttings, photos and sketches, it's a must have for anyone who loves UFO's and Ufology. If COVID has taught me anything, I would say it has highlighted my value and need for connection with my family and friends. My parents live in Hong Kong and my mum was planning to come for the birth of my youngest son nearly two years ago. Then the pandemic forced all international borders to close. Now we are just hoping we could see my parents later this year, or maybe early next year. With all that in mind, when I heard about Robyn's work, especially her Musings and Memoirs Storytelling Production for aging loved ones, I had to interview her for this podcast, so that people can consider using this service to capture loved one's stories for the family. About Robyn Pearson Robyn Pearson is the owner and founder of A Friend Indeed. She is passionate about supporting adult children who are in a caregiver role to their aging parents. Over the past 11 years of service, she has spoken with numerous daughters and sons, each one admitting that it's a big role to take on alongside the many other responsibilities they juggle. A Friend Indeed brings engagement, purpose, joy and a little "goofyness" to increase the quality of life for their aging loved one and to ease the pressure off the family so it doesn't feel like everything has to be all on their shoulders. On-site visits with their aging loved one residing at home, in a care facility, or even awaiting placement. Robyn's business is serving Calgary, Airdrie, Didsbury and areas within Alberta, Canada. The pandemic had interrupted their in-person visits back in 2020-2021, while they are back to their in-person visits, they have also developed an additional way of supporting the family they serve and engaging their aging loved one! Musings & Memoirs is a Video Storytelling Production made to capture their aging loved ones' stories, as told by them to become a precious and memorable keepsake for the family now and for future generations! Interview Highlights Introducing Robyn Pearson, owner and founder of 'A Friend Indeed' (00.14)Outline of the key functions of A Friend Indeed; including caring for ageing loved ones in care facilities, hospitals. Today I'm going to talk about being on a movie set, and it was actually pretty cool. So what happened was they tell you at the very last minute and I don't know if that's because they're so busy or because of privacy reasons. But we actually applied to go to the one that they were filming in Didsbury. All they said was, we are looking for extras, send in pictures, which is a bit odd because I feel like they're just looking for bodies like, I don't think it matters what you look like, although it would be flattering to believe or think that you got on because maybe you're good looking. But I think that's a stretch. I think they're just looking for bodies. So you need someone that has a flexible job or doesn't have a job, someone that doesn't have kids or can bring their kids with them. And you need someone close enough and then you need someone that can sit there all day and do nothing. https://youtu.be/2oUp5OiKiQo It almost sounds prestigious, but it's not. And I'm only saying that because, and I don't mean like, it's really cool and it's unique and it's different and interesting. But I think that all they need is bodies and people to stand there, and to be a hundred percent honest with you, that's just my perspective. It could be wrong. I don't want to downplay it. It was definitely a cool experience. But they did ask me, they said, well, you shave your mohawk, and I was like, Do I have to? And then they said, yes, it was filmed in the 80s, like 80s theme, so it wasn't too many people with mohawks. They don't let you wear any jewelry. So no jewelry of any kind for obvious reasons and people take their glasses off. It was really cool. What was most interesting to me is I'll be on set and I'm watching the actors and watching the extras. I'm watching the film crew and it was really cool for me to see the behind the scenes and pay attention to every single detail. And that's what they do. And it sounds funny because earlier I was, I played professional sports and everyone wants to be in the limelight. Everyone wants to be the one. They want to be the star. Well, for me, the behind the scenes was way more interesting. So let me tell you the process. This is my first experience. You have to do things a few times before you can feel the energy in the people, but here is what I can tell you about it.
"Manchester had always been glinting on the horizon across the Lancashire plain" On National Storytelling week, host Lisa Morton brings you some of the best stories about Manchester places, from the We Built This City archives. You'll hear about iconic Manchester buildings, like Granada studios, Manchester's pubs, like the Dog and Partridge in Didsbury and about the redevelopment of the Northern Quarter. Featuring contributions from Lemn Sissay, Chris Oglesby, Eamonn O'Neal, Sharon Latham, Siobhan Johnston, Liam Manton, Tom Bloxham and Vikas Shah. ------ Your host, Lisa Morton, started PR company Roland Dransfield in 1996, one month after the fateful IRA bomb that tore apart the city centre. From that point, the business, and its team members, have been involved in helping to support the creation of Modern Manchester – across regeneration, business, charity, leisure and hospitality, sport and culture. To celebrate the 25 years that Roland Dransfield has spent creating these bonds, Lisa is gathering together some of her Greater Mancunian ‘family' and will be exploring how they have created their own purposeful relationships with the best place in the world. The football: Do trophies have a different value depending on who wins them, how often, and whether they are claimed by a player that's also associated with individual achievements? Harry Kane has a chance to move from a club that hasn't won anything to one that wins everything, but will those potential future achievements have the same value to him as breaking the Premier League, or England goal-scoring record at some point in his career? The food: Steven, who according to the MailOnline is living in a no-go area for white people, is forced to eat a dish which is typical of Didsbury, clearly proving the august publication's point: mango chutney-glazed spiced chicken breast with cumin bulgur wheat and roasted carrots. England's footballers continue to upset a minority of fans by daring to take the knee to highlight racism and the need to stop it, but are the fans boos justified? Should Gareth Southgate's men stop it and why on earth has Didsbury been listed as a no go area for white people by a national newspaper? Scotty, Motty and Youngy take a look at all the latest news, football, political and otherwise!

The football: Now that it's been more than seven months, and an end is not immediately in sight, have we become so accustomed to behind closed doors football that we're not noticing the potential pitfalls anymore? As we enter the second half of the season, when stakes are raised and competitions are decided, will we start to realise the relationship has become a little more comfortable than we'd like, particularly as we're about to experience those seasonal denouements without fans for a second time. The food: Hugh feels the need to make a public service announcement about the chicken samosas he had at a local deli. Yes, Didsbury has more than one deli, and these are the best samosas he's ever had. Alice is one of those brilliant women I bumped into at church and bonded with over music and many a night out. 10 years on I've seen her take on many challenges with her career and creativity. In this episode Alice opens up about a difficult year of unemployment. She'd been ace-ing it in a dream job and worked at a director level in an arts company. She felt the time was right to move on but things didn't quite turn out as expected.Especially when you find yourself cleaning up toenail clippings for cash in Didsbury. Alice talks from the rough edge of experience and finding a quiet, steely, day by day courage.Keep being courageous,Rachael xWHO'S BEHIND THIS PODCAST?I'd ridden pretty high on the creative career rollercoaster. At times it was exhilarating (and occasionally it was terrifying.) It takes stamina, guts and more than a smattering of resilience. Don't panic, this isn't another podcast telling you to hustle harder. I've been there and got the burnout badge to prove it.I'm looking to find people who are doing the work they love, but it's been a bumpy ride.Starting over can be wonderful, agony and pants shakingly scary all at the same time. There are others who did it. Who are right in the centre of figuring that out. I'm trying to find the people, I needed to hear, at the time I felt I was free-falling from the loop-di-loop.BUILD A KICKARSE CREATIVE BUSINESSI'm able to make this podcast because I get a small income from some kickarse affiliate products. If you use any of these products with my link I can receive a small percentage back. Which honestly, does help! These are products that I use everyday to make Call On Courage happen.
