In 2002, Trent Evans was overcome with excitement when he learned he would be invited to the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah to volunteer as an icemaker. Originally from Edmonton, Alta., Evans had been working as a supervisor for the maintenance team that cared for the ice during Oilers games, team practices and other activities. Evans was one of 16 people invited to make and maintain the ice that would be on the international stage at the Olympics. When Evans arrived in Salt Lake City in February 2002, he started working on creating the ice that would be eventually used in the Olympic hockey tournaments for both the women's and men's teams. To mark centre ice, he placed a loonie — a piece of luck for the Canadian teams. Canada's men's hockey team hadn't won a gold medal since 1952. Wayne Gretzky was the team's executive director, Pat Quinn was the head coach and with players like Mario Lemieux, Joe Sakic, Eric Lindros and Jerome Iginla, Eric Zweig, a sports historian and author, said people were hopeful Canada could win the 2002 tournament. On this episode of Global News' What happened to…? Erica Vella finds out if the loonie was really lucky and speaks with Trent Evans to see what happened once it was revealed that it was hidden in the ice. She also finds out where the loonie is now and if its legacy has continued on. Contact: Twitter: @ericavella Email: erica.vella@globalnews.ca See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

6-27-2020 Passed Ball Show. John opens up this program by reminding those to wear a mask in public. Those who are not wearing a mask are directly responsible for the outbreak in cases of the coronavirus in the states of Florida, Texas, and California. Major League Baseball is implementing a rule to start the tenth inning with a runner at second base as a means to speed up the game. Who had a say in this rule change? It is near criminal that the Commissioner of Major League Baseball has the authority to completely change the rules of the game on a whim. It is embarrassing, and it is insulting to any baseball fan. It is also embarrassing that MLB owners, led by Commissioner Manfred have used a national wide pandemic to air the dirty laundry they have with their players. John then talks about sports like NASCAR and the National Hockey League and asks why there so few blacks and minorities involved in these sports. Hopefully NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace and Jerome Iginla, the most recent inductee into the Pro Hockey Hall of Fame, can serve as role models to other people of color and encourage them to be part of the sports. John once again mentions the lack of diversity when it comes to MLB managers and NFL Head Coaches and suggests the teams who have not hired a black coach or manager be forced to fulfill their next vacancy with one.

On the newest episode of TCS, Matt & Rob are in studio together for the first time in 2018 covering a few things they have missed in the last week or two. Up first, the Canadian Soccer Association made some surprising changes in terms of firing their National Men's Team Head Coach and replacing him with ... their National Women's Team Head Coach. Is there some funny business here? Was it the right move to make? And how messed up is it that in 2018 being moved from a 5th place Women's Team to a 94th place Men's Team is still considered a promotion? Later on, the Captain of the Swedish World Juniors team pitched his silver medal in to the crowd following the championship game. Is it something he's likely to regret later? Or is it something that the people calling him a warrior who hates to lose are more on track with? Or, maybe, is it an emotional 19 year old kid doing something that he probably doesn't regret but probably wishes wasn't on TV? After giving some other thoughts on the World Juniors, the guys also talk about the Canadian Olympic Men's Hockey team and some of the more interesting selections. And is it possible that the fact that NHL'ers aren't going might actually make the tournament more interesting? All this and tons more on TCS195. Sports broadcaster Eric Francis joins me on Episode 4 of The Generators. Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a sports broadcaster? Eric shoots from the hip in his job and does the same in this conversation. You'll hear his thoughts on Jerome Iginla as a leader and what it's like to face a player who may not like a previous article you've written. We get into a deep chat about life in general and about being open to opportunities. This was a fun one so have a listen and tell your friends. There's plenty of common threads from previous episodes as well.Trent McClellan's WebsiteTheme Song by Jerry StampProduced by: Jake Hirsch Entertainment GroupFor advertising or show inquiries, please contact Jake Hirsch here or jake@jakehirsch.ca Hosted on Acast.
