Hello! Welcome to the latest edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. In this episode I'm very excited to be joined by screenwriter Jill Gevargizian, co-writer, director and producer of 2020's brilliant Kansas City-set horror film The Stylist, in which a profoundly disturbed hair stylist, played by the phenomenal Najarra Townsend, gives very special hair treatment to her clients. Eat your heart out, Sweeney Todd. I've been a fan of this understated film – which you can find here (US) and here (UK) – since I first saw it, and although there's a fantastic special edition Blu-rays out there with commentaries and all kinds of extras, I was thrilled when Jill agreed to provide this brand new audio commentary. Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? Email David *at * Rogue-Commentary *dot* com or send us a tweet. If you are a fan of the horror genre, the term “Final Girl” is likely to conjure up a very specific image in your mind. Maybe you think of a character that embodies this archetype. You may see her running through the woods screaming for help; held captive by a homicidal maniac; or quietly cowering in a closet desperately hoping she has evaded her attacker. And of course, there's a good chance you see her outfoxing her assailant and finishing him off once and for all. She may be battered and bruised, but she's still the last one standing. For some this character is an inspiration, for others she symbolizes the misogynistic tendencies of a genre that overwhelmingly relies on the imagery of brutalized women. The Video Monsters are thrilled to be joined by Jill Gevargizian, director of THE STYLIST (2020), to talk about what the term “Final Girl” means to us, shout out some of our favorite Final Girls, and really dig into what the tropes of the character have to say about horror movies, the people who make them, and the people who enjoy them. We also spend some time debating if the Final Girl is exclusive to slashers or if she exists in other horror subgenres as well. So send your boyfriend packing, say no to drugs, and gear up for the final showdown because we're taking on the patriarchy with our favorite Final Girls. For episode 202 we are joined by friend-of-the-show Eli who was the brains behind the movies we feature. We start off with 2018's "Tejano" from director David Blue Garcia. It takes some familiar crime story tropes and combines them with small town border drama to create a unique look at a world that was entirely alien to the cave dwellers. Beautifully shot and packed with action, we all really liked it. We follow that up with a real masterpiece, 2020's "The Stylist" from director Jill Gevargizian and with a terrific lead performance from Najarra Townsend as a hair stylist with a VERY dark side. A complex tale of the ways humans struggle to relate and interreact combined with harrowing tension, we urge everyone to check it out! Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. This week Mike, Rich and Steve look at a bumper pack of films, kicking off with FUKUSHIMA 50, a dramatisation of the Fukushima nuclear disaster. (the trailer in the link is horribly dubbed into American - the actual film is presented in Japanese with English subs). Then we take a look at THE STYLIST, a very stylish horror film with an iconic protagonist. You may also be interested in checking out this interview with the director, Jill Gevargizian. Mike and Rich then delve into not one but two Hellraiser films, which have only just now been released in the UK - HELLRAISER: REVELATIONS (2011) and HELLRAISER: JUDGEMENT(2018). These are noteable for not having Doug Bradley in the role of Pinhead - but does that necessarily make them bad films? I actually have a big bone to pick with one of them - tune in to hear us discuss! We also take a look at SHADOWLAND, a new low budget horror film set in the wilds of Scotland, co-starring Amela Eve from The Haunting of Bly Manor. Our Short Shot is the very well-produced DECOMMISSIONED - contrast the zero gravity fx here to what Ron Howard put his cast through in Apollo 13! Click the link to watch the whole 6min film! Finally, out DTV Throwback is BACK TO EVEN, in which an almost unrecogniseable Lorenzo Lamas runs into problems with a violent bookie who happens to be an old highschool buddy and played by Michael Pare. I couldn't find an actual trailer online for this, just the linked opening scene. She is the director of the shorts Call Girl, 42 Counts, One Last Meal, the festival-smashing short The Stylist and now, the SUPERB feature length version of The Stylist, which arrives on the Arrow Player as of Monday, 1st March... It is, of course, Jill Gevargizian! The film, somewhat unsurprisingly... Anacondas: Trail of Blood! No Hoff this time but John Rhys-Davies is back for the final showdown with the CGI serpents... The synopsis is as follows:  Dr. Amanda Hayes fights with henchmen sent by a dying billionaire while avoiding a gigantic anaconda that regenerates. Jill Gevargizian's The Stylist premiered at Fantastic Fest recently. As a Kickstarter backer I was able to catch an online premiere soon after. Here's some thoughts on this gloriously gross serial killer tale.  Ratings System: Longneck of Melbourne Bitter - an excellent film. Sublimely entertaining, meaningful or both.  Pint of Kilkenny - a very good, highly recommended film.  Stubby of Reschs - a good film and worth your time.  Schooner of Carlton Draught - Not great aye. But perhaps an interesting idea or two.  Schooner of Tooheys New - Shithouse

Howdy partner! We've got a rootin', tootin' new episode of The Grave Plot Podcast and today we're headed to the wild, wild west to talk about horror westerns! Before we hit the ol' dusty trail, though, we've gotta talk about this Horror Business. In Real World Horror, we talk about a German graveyard featuring bodies being buried upside down. Why, you ask? Some kind of cult ritual? No, no, it's much simpler than that. It's because of ZOMBIES. We also play a round of "good news, bad news" with a story on a brand new Haunted Mansion themed movie coming from Disney. Don't get too excited, remember there's bad news. We then reminisce on our times getting drunk and playing Left 4 Dead 2 because there's a new official unofficial update coming for the game! We also discuss a full length version of Jill Gevargizian's The Stylist, a whole franchise coming for Army of the Dead, and we delve into the strange world of Darren Lynn Bousman's One Day Die. We then rustle up our film reviews. First up, we discuss the new witchy western The Pale Door, featuring Zachary Knighton, Pat Healy, and a gang of outlaws taking on an army of sinister Salem sorceresses. We then head to the snowy Sierra Nevada mountains for Ravenous. This pitch black comedic cannibal film feature Guy Pierce, Robert Carlyle, and - naturally - David Arquette. What could go wrong? So saddle up and let's ride into the sunset with a brand new Grave Plot Podcast!

This week, things are gonna get slippery for the THIRD time! She did the first two films with us, after all! She is the director of the shorts Call Girl, 42 Counts, One Last Meal, the festival-smashing short The Stylist and now, the feature length version of The Stylist... It is, of course, Jill Gevargizian! The film, somewhat unsurprisingly... Anaconda - Offspring! The third in the series sees David Hasselhoff and John Rhys-Davies take on the slippery beasts in a film lacking in practical snakes but not in gore. So how is it??? The synopsis is as follows:  A scientist working in a millionaire's secret underground lab performs experiments on two giant predatory snakes. However when the creatures escape and go on the rampage, she enlists the aid of a mercenary to put a stop to their campaign of destruction. This episode is no laughing matter as we're headed under the big top for another tribute to creepy clowns. Before we get out the grease paint, though, let's talk about some Horror Business. In Real World Horror, we talk about a Catholic school in Tennessee who, on the advice of real live exorcists, has decided that wizards are real and J.K. Rowling is trying to secretly raise an army of the dead. Or something. We also talk about the kids who will be returning to Haddonfield after all these years for next year's Halloween Kills, as well as the new book from World War Z scribe Max Brooks. We also tell you all about a "werewolf-western" that Guillermo Del Toro is producing and a Kickstarter for a full length feature based on Jill Gevargizian's awesome short The Stylist. We then get a jump on our creepy clown coverage by discussing the upcoming documentary Wrinkles the Clown. While we've got our giant shoes on, we head into our film reviews. We, of course, break down the new sequel to last year's It remake, It Chapter Two. Is it a worthy follow-up? Is it worth 3 hours? We'll tell you our thoughts. We also tell you our thoughts on the found footage film based on the creepy clown sightings from a few years ago, namely one clown; Gags the Clown. Another SLVS first this week as we are joined once again by a past guest. But wait! Havent you lads done that before? Yes! But this time, the guest reached out to us and pitched us an episode idea and it's one we couldn't pass up.  So, we are joined once again by an old pal in the form of director of Dementia: Part 2, star of Beyond the Gates, The Minds Eye and Jill Gevargizian's upcoming One Last Meal, not to mention being the producer of Frightfest 2019 selection Bliss...It's Matt Mercer! His chosen film? Ravenous! Its Antonia Bird's criminally unloved and underseen cannibal flick which stars Guy Pearce, Jeremy Davies, features an all too brief appearance by David Arquette and also is notable for an absolutely scene-stealing and stellar performance from Robert Carlyle.  Don't miss this one.  The Synopsis is as follows: Upon receiving reports of missing persons at Fort Spencer, a remote Army outpost on the Western frontier, Capt. John Boyd investigates. After arriving at his new post, Boyd and his regiment aid a wounded frontiersman, F.W. Colquhoun, who recounts a horrifying tale of a wagon train murdered by its supposed guide -- a vicious U.S. Army colonel gone rogue. Fearing the worst, the regiment heads out into the wilderness to verify Colquhoun's gruesome claims.   Please note that this episode contains strong language, conversations of an adult nature and some EXTREMELY Scottish accents.  Remember, you can keep up to date with our news by following us via the usual social media outlets:  Facebook Twitter Instagram Plus you can drop us an email to stronglanguageviolentscenes@gmail.com.
