This week, we (Evan, Dave, and Megan) review RODEO (2:06), Lola Quivoron's emotionally-intense French drama, a fascinating character study starring Julie Ledru as a tough, independent dirt bike rider who becomes a part of a turbulent group of male bikers. Next, we discuss RYE LANE (25:36), Raine Allen-Miller's charming, witty, and vibrant British rom-com starring David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah as two twenty-somethings dealing with recent breakups and spending the day together in South London. Hello! Welcome to the latest edition of the exclusive audio commentary podcast hosted by me, David Hughes. In this episode I'm very excited to be joined by screenwriter Jill Gevargizian, co-writer, director and producer of 2020's brilliant Kansas City-set horror film The Stylist, in which a profoundly disturbed hair stylist, played by the phenomenal Najarra Townsend, gives very special hair treatment to her clients. Eat your heart out, Sweeney Todd. I've been a fan of this understated film – which you can find here (US) and here (UK) – since I first saw it, and although there's a fantastic special edition Blu-rays out there with commentaries and all kinds of extras, I was thrilled when Jill agreed to provide this brand new audio commentary. Comments? Feedback? Suggestions? Email David *at * Rogue-Commentary *dot* com or send us a tweet. We have lots of exciting episodes in the works, so if you like what you hear – or just the idea – please subscribe, and remember to rate us wherever you hear this podcast – it'll really help us to keep going. Oh, and follow us on Twitter and/or Instagram to stay up-to-date on our forthcoming releases. Thanks for listening! A Synchronicity production. Conceived, written and presented by David Hughes. If you are a fan of the horror genre, the term “Final Girl” is likely to conjure up a very specific image in your mind. Maybe you think of a character that embodies this archetype. You may see her running through the woods screaming for help; held captive by a homicidal maniac; or quietly cowering in a closet desperately hoping she has evaded her attacker. And of course, there's a good chance you see her outfoxing her assailant and finishing him off once and for all. She may be battered and bruised, but she's still the last one standing. For some this character is an inspiration, for others she symbolizes the misogynistic tendencies of a genre that overwhelmingly relies on the imagery of brutalized women. The Video Monsters are thrilled to be joined by Jill Gevargizian, director of THE STYLIST (2020), to talk about what the term “Final Girl” means to us, shout out some of our favorite Final Girls, and really dig into what the tropes of the character have to say about horror movies, the people who make them, and the people who enjoy them. We also spend some time debating if the Final Girl is exclusive to slashers or if she exists in other horror subgenres as well. So send your boyfriend packing, say no to drugs, and gear up for the final showdown because we're taking on the patriarchy with our favorite Final Girls. For episode 202 we are joined by friend-of-the-show Eli who was the brains behind the movies we feature. We start off with 2018's "Tejano" from director David Blue Garcia. It takes some familiar crime story tropes and combines them with small town border drama to create a unique look at a world that was entirely alien to the cave dwellers. Beautifully shot and packed with action, we all really liked it. We follow that up with a real masterpiece, 2020's "The Stylist" from director Jill Gevargizian and with a terrific lead performance from Najarra Townsend as a hair stylist with a VERY dark side. A complex tale of the ways humans struggle to relate and interreact combined with harrowing tension, we urge everyone to check it out! Please let us know what you thought of the show, and send us some suggestions for future episodes. You can email us at flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com.
