Timing and optics are very important.   Economy Carney Cracks: Canada Has ‘No Intention’ Of Pursuing Free Trade Deal With China After Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs To review: right before Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney returned from a trip to Beijing and announced a new 5-point ‘strategic partnership’ to ‘diversify our trade partnerships.’ The agreements included slashing tariffs on Chinese EV imports from 100 percent to 6.1 percent for the first 49,000 units, in exchange for China cutting tariffs on Canadian canola from 85 percent to 15 percent until at least the end of the year. Other exports, including Canadian canola meal, lobsters, crabs, and peas will also not be subject to Chinese anti-discrimination tariffs until at least the end of 2026. A week later, Carney told the global elite at Davos resort that the “rules-based order” established by the United States and its allies following WW2 was fraying amid the current rivalry between China and America, so the “middle powers must act together because if we’re not on the table, we’re on the menu.”  Carney said that for their survival, nations should no longer “go along to get along” with Trump.   Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada has “no intention” of pursuing a free trade deal with China, after Donald Trump threatened to slap a 100% tariff on Canadian exports if Ottawa “makes a deal” with Beijing.   Source: zerohedge.com Trump Is Right About Europe's Weak Economy: U.S. vs. EU Compared  President Trump argued that Europe's economic stagnation is the result of a self-inflicted “civilizational erasure” driven by reliance on what he calls the “Green New Scam,” which he says has replaced affordable energy with costly and unreliable wind power. He further asserted that unchecked mass migration has strained social infrastructure and altered the continent's cultural identity, while a stifling regulatory environment and excessive government spending have suppressed the innovation needed to compete with the United States. Finally, he accused European nations of freeloading on American security, arguing that their failure to meet NATO defense spending targets over the past 70 years has allowed them to avoid the true costs of national sovereignty at the expense of the American taxpayer. Based on current economic data as of January 2026, the comparison supports Trump's critique. While the United States is experiencing aggressive growth alongside widespread deregulation, Europe remains mired in what can best be described as stabilized stagnation. The United States enters 2026 with inflation at 2.7%, steadily returning toward the 2% target. As in President Trump's first term, strong GDP growth has been paired with relatively modest inflation. Fourth-quarter GDP growth is projected at 5.4%, dwarfing Europe's stagnant 0.2%. For the full year, U.S. growth is expected to reach between 4.3% and 5%, while Europe is projected to manage only about 1.3% to 1.6%. On the labor front, the United States maintains its historical advantage, with unemployment at 4.4% compared to 6.3% in the Eurozone. This low level of unemployment has been achieved despite deep government job cuts that reduced taxpayer costs. While the United States reduced federal spending by $100 billion, European fiscal policy has moved in the opposite direction. The U.S. has moved 1.2 million people off food stamps, while European social safety nets are coming under increased strain from rising living costs. In 2024, the most recent data available, EU social protection spending rose by 7%, far outpacing nominal GDP growth. This imbalance pushed the social expenditure-to-GDP ratio to 27.3% across the bloc, with countries such as France and Austria exceeding 31%, reinforcing the strain caused by rising demand for social welfare. Energy remains far cheaper in the United States, particularly electricity and natural gas, due to abundant domestic production, lower taxes and levies, and reduced reliance on imports, with overall prices about half of Europe's and industrial electricity often as little as one-third. More LNG, more U.S. gas, more renewables… Higher costs baked in. For Brussels this is an irreversible line. After 2027, there's no “going back to normal.” The EU has indeed been importing refined petroleum products from India that originate from Russian crude oil, creating an indirect pathway for Russian oil to enter the European market despite sanctions on direct imports from Russia since December 2022.  This circumvention became prominent after the EU and G7 imposed a price cap on Russian oil, prompting Russia to redirect exports to countries like India and China, where the crude is refined and then resold.    EU officials and analysts have long acknowledged the loophole, which is why recent sanctions packages have targeted it directly. For instance, the EU’s 18th sanctions package in July 2025 banned the import of petroleum products derived from Russian crude processed in third countries, and specifically sanctioned Nayara Energy, an Indian refinery partly owned by Russia’s Rosneft.  The 19th package in October 2025 further tightened measures by sanctioning additional third-country entities, including three in India, for supporting Russia’s circumvention efforts. As a result, major Indian refiners like Reliance Industries have stopped importing Russian crude for certain facilities to comply with these rules and maintain access to EU markets. Russia, meanwhile, continues to adapt by using new middlemen exporters to supply India, aiming to sustain the flow despite the crackdown.  India has not fully stopped importing Russian oil since then, but imports have significantly declined. In 2025, Russia’s share of India’s crude oil imports fell to 33.3% from 36% the previous year, while OPEC’s share rose slightly to 50%.  By December 2025, India dropped to the third-largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels overall, importing €2.3 billion worth that month, with major refiners like Reliance Industries scaling back or halting purchases.    This reduction appears driven by a mix of U.S. tariff pressures, steeper discounts on Russian crude drawing buyers back selectively, and India’s strategic diversification to ensure energy security without fully alienating Russia—a key defense and trade partner. https://twitter.com/KobeissiLetter/status/2015527595975033161?s=20   the CMC Joint Staff Dept: Under investigation for violations 5. This drive is officially framed as rooting out graft, bribery, and disciplinary violations, but analysts widely interpret it as a mechanism for Xi to consolidate power, enforce unwavering loyalty among military leaders, and address systemic issues like incompetence or factional rivalries that could undermine PLA readiness.  The campaign has intensified in 2025-2026, affecting nearly the entire top echelon of the CMC—China’s highest military decision-making body, chaired by Xi himself—leaving it in significant disarray War/Peace Report: Iran's Khamenei Flees to ‘Fortified' Bunker, Fearing U.S. Strike Following rising concerns over a possible U.S. military strike, Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has relocated to a heavily fortified underground compound in Tehran, according to reports, which cited sources close to the regime who revealed his son now oversees day-to-day operations. 【 What We Talked About】 How can a tiny garden—barely a third of a city block—spark political battles in New York, make headlines in the New York Times, and rally celebrities like Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro to its defense? In November 2025, just days after Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral race but before he could take office, outgoing Mayor Eric Adams signed an executive order permanently designating Elizabeth Street Garden as parkland—a move widely seen as a "political poison pill." The fate of this garden reflects a core tension in urban governance, not just in New York but across America: Should we build more housing, or protect existing communities? And who gets to decide the future of a neighborhood? In this episode, we're joined by Yuxiang Luo, an urban planner based in New York, to explore ten years of controversy surrounding a single community garden—and the invisible power struggles that shape New York City politics. Yuxiang has previously appeared on two episodes about New York: "Why Is Housing in New York So Expensive?" and "Why Is the New York Subway So Run-Down?", both available on our sister podcast Mo Electives (选修课). One thing is clear God never forgot this defining moment in the nation's history and both these had significant stories to come. The others all died off in the desert.Defining MomentsShare or consider from your life story – some defining moments that you now see as having a significant ‘turning point' moment in your spiritual journey. What happened? What did you think happened? What do you now perceive happened?Heart or Head – which comes first? What did you think about the heart of head thought from today's message? Which comes first? I believe the heart needs to be set firstly and then the head (daily choices and thinking) trimmed and aligned to reach the direction and destination your heart desires. Thinking of scriptures that support this:Look at both Joshua and Caleb from a heart and head perspective – what stands out to you about these two? Are both heart and head present in their report? Where were the 10 others defeated – in their heart or head? What implications does heart and head have for us right now at HCBC?NOTE: This is not a bible study or I would have given you scriptures to look up and answers. These comments and questions are designed to provoke you to reflect on your life journey and the story of Numbers 13. This is where your life intersects with scripture and how you reflect on that for personal growth. Ideally done with other people.

Welcome to Hamilton Central Baptist Church! This is the sixth sermon in the Heading For The Promised Land teaching series.REFLECTION:Hebrews 13:17 Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say…..How does this work out in practice in a relational community of Gods people? How does mutual submission and accountability work together – ie does the Bible teach blind obedience to leaders or a journey together under the Holy Spirit with all being willing to submit to each other and so maintain unity. What do you think? What scriptures are there that indicate the need for both submission and accountability?Exit Ramp 3 “I want to be respected, heard and honored because I deserve it”What is wrong with this statement? What is the underlying sin that is lurking. In what ways does this evidence itself these days in churches? The Bible teaches that those who teach the Word have authority not in their title or office but in the degree to which they convey biblical truth accurately. Ie authority lies in the quality and accuracy of their teaching and leading not in their position, title of office. Agree? What implications are here for those who teach listen?Churches are relational communities, they are not buildings or locations. Leadership in these communities of faith is Gods way of moving them forwards. What does ‘mutual submission' look like in this regard? How could it work with leaders leading, and people following but also participating in the process and not just being passive? Give some examples of what mutual submission might look like. Can you see how the Devil (our adversary) has pushed to extremes the issue of leadership and authority? It has become either ‘Don't question the leader or you are questioning God'….touch not the Lords anointed etc!! Or the other extreme which is such a flatline of leadership that nobody dares to lead or take initiative. We are called to navigate between these extremes in relationship with each other. Not an easy path. Can you think of times when either extreme has prevailed and the outcome was bad. What helps us navigate a middle pathway in this matter? We have done a lot of work at hcbc defining our mission and our vision. Without clearly defined values to live out the mission and vision we easily revert to old pathways. Having a clear mission and vision requires clearly defined and agreed values. Where do these values come from? What might they look like? How and who will agree to them?MESSAGE OUTLINE - Exit Ramp 3 “I want to be respected, heard and honored because I deserve it – A lie of self aggrandizement.- Leaders authority comes from the truth they convey and live not their title or office- Leadership is Gods idea not ours- Mutual submission is the culture of the kingdom in relational community- We are all Leaders – lead your own life firstly. You don't become a good leader until you have learned to be a good follower.

Every attempt to distance himself only made things worse—his disastrous 2019 BBC interview cemented his reputation as arrogant, evasive, and tone-deaf. Instead of expressing remorse or empathy for Epstein's victims, he portrayed himself as the victim, insisting he'd done nothing wrong while offering implausible excuses about medical conditions and faulty memories. The public and the press weren't buying it. With Epstein's death reigniting global outrage, Andrew found himself cornered by mounting evidence of his closeness to the financier—flight logs, photos, and testimony from Virginia Giuffre made denial untenable.By the time Andrew settled Giuffre's civil lawsuit in 2022, reportedly for millions, his royal career was finished. The Queen stripped him of his military titles and public duties, while King Charles quietly ensured his permanent exile from frontline royal life. Every possible exit strategy—silence, denial, legal settlements, staged contrition—had failed. Epstein's shadow had consumed Andrew's reputation, leaving him radioactive even within his own family. What began as an elite friendship turned into a life sentence of disgrace; there was no PR fix, no royal favor, no public forgiveness that could undo the damage. 623: Democratic lawmaker says now is a good time for local governments to "off ramp" property tax give aways

Even as some local governments claim that a new, 3% cap on property tax increases will cause chaos in their budgets, Sen. Josh Boschee, a Democrat from Fargo, says he and his colleagues felt it was important to implement. He says lawmakers see it as a way of putting the responsiblity for property taxes back on local governments. "In the last decade, or my 12 years of service in the state legislature, we've tried to educate voters that property tax is a local issue," he said on this episode of Plain Talk. "Yet it continues to be put on our plate in Bismarck." He noted that with the state now providing significant relief, locals are expected to manage their budgets to prevent past issues of unchecked growth in valuations and spending. Boschee addressed property tax exemptions, including my recent column about a property tax break for newly-built single-family homes in Fargo that could go a long way toward addressing the city's shortfalls. He said the $1,600 tax credit lawmakers approved for primary residences gives local governments a good "off ramp" to end some of those exemptions, since the credit would cushion the blow for taxpayers. Switching topics, Boschee also addressed concerns that cuts in federal spending could hit North Dakota hard. He said the state's finances are in order to deal with some uncertainty. "We are in a good budget position," he said. "We worked and we're part of the ruling majority with the mainstream Republicans to make sure we had a good budget." "The governor has some leniency within about 5% of the budget to weather cuts at the agency level, or you know, some discretionary funds that we can see what can be moved around through the emergency commission. So we're in a a good position to be able to address them." If you want to participate in Plain Talk, just give us a call or text at 701-587-3141. Bruce Kasman is joined by Joe Lupton to discuss their view that hopes of a court-led off-ramp to the US war on trade are overstated. They maintain that the risks are skewed toward higher, not lower, tariffs. However, the trajectory of growth is complicated by prior front-loading and there is debate about how to track resilience. Weakness could presage recession, muddle-through, or rebound. The latter scenario risks Fed cuts only to be followed by hikes.   This podcast was recorded on May 30, 2025. Happy 34th birthday, Pearl Jam! This week we are celebrating the anniversary of the band's debut show from the Off Ramp back in 1990 by covering the show that happened on the last time they played the anniversary date in 2014. There are certain shows that are highly praised in their catalog for being marathon shows playing upwards of nearly 40 songs in a set. State College, Mansfield and The Spectrum are a few by name, but the tour closing show in Denver had a whopping 38 performances that could put this show in the neighborhood of the others previously mentioned. Does this show belong among the classic marathon shows? That will be a topic for discussion here as we have tons of material to break down. What's interesting to note is that this show features six of the eight songs that were played in that Off Ramp set, including Release as the opener. While the band may not have recognized the significance of the date prior to the show, they certainly rise to the occasion to make it a special night for their audience. It was a great show for deep cuts such as Ghost, Of The Earth, Don't Gimme No Lip, My Father's Son and Sleight Of Hand, and to really give the crowd something unique, Lukin is played with a slow burn intro. As mentioned, there's 38 songs at play here so there's a lot to pack into this episode!
