Grab your chador and the cat because we're talking Ana Lily Amirpour's feature debut, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014). Joining us on the skateboard into Bad City is writer Abby Olcese, who appreciates the mood of this black and white Iranian Western vampire film. Plus: the Girl's moral code, the film's open ending, drug dealer decor, and why Arash is such a clingy sad boy. Questions? Comments? Snark? _______________________________________ (00:00) Cold Opener & Intro (18:39) Nosferatu (53:02) Shadow Of The Vampire (01:04:46) A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (01:27:55) Thirst (01:46:18) Ausblick auf die nächste Folge (01:48:58) SPOILERTALK zu Nosferatu _______________________________________ Hier kannst du uns überall finden: iTunes/Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/2TgWvY3 Spotify: https://spoti.fi/34jfB68 YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/JahierFilmePodcast RSS-Feed: https://jahierfilme.podcaster.de/ Instagram: @jahierfilme Linktree: https://linktr.ee/jahierfilme _______________________________________ Alle unsere Filme im Überblick: https://letterboxd.com/jahierfilme/lists/

We're staying in vampire western territory as we discuss A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night apart of our Women in Horror celebration. Director Jill Gevargizian (The Stylist, Ghost Game) joins the boys in discussing a fairy tale of morality, the iconography of The Girl, the hyper specific geopolitical themes, and once again preaching that style is substance. We're deep in spooky season at the time of this latest episode of STUDIOCANAL Presents – and that was all the reason we needed to invite podcaster, musician, writer, actor, and huge movie fan Scroobius Pip to join us. Along with regular host Simon Brew, the focus of the chat this time is primarily on Joe Cornish's modern favourite Attack The Block, and just why it continues to endure so well. Plus a few words too for Ana Lily Amirpour's acclaimed 2014 vampire movie, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night. There's even time to talk about a quick cuddle, too…
2014's A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT, written and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, was promoted as The first Iranian Vampire Western, although when I have been describing it to people I've said it's the first Iranian Skateboarding Vampire Western. It's in black and white, all the dialogue is in Farsi, and there's a skateboarding vampire. Kevin and Mike talk about the film, artsy vampire movies, and spend more time than is probably necessary on a tangent about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Happy spooky season, y'all!

Long time friend Danny joins Caitlin to cover 2014's A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. It's a feminist favorite, and it uses vampirism to explore addiction and subversion. It also has a killer soundtrack. Who wouldn't love a black-and-white movie about a chador-wearing, skateboarding vampire who stalks bad guys and plays good music? We also talk about what's going on Iran currently, and we have a lot of fun with the fan-submitted questions. Thanks, as always, for sending those in!

Teenagers with knives, invading insects, vampire children, crazed surgeons, wronged actors out for revenge—the horror genre has a haunted house for everyone, no matter your taste. Despite treating women like disposable straws, or lumping the queer and disabled together as monsters, scary movies have long been celebrated by the people most likely to be before the opening credits are done. For this year's season of scares, editor Joe Vallese asked 24 queer and trans writers to consider the horror movies that matter to them, from Halloween to Hereditary and all points in between. “It's mostly women I know, who love horror films in that way, because nothing's really scarier than the real world things that can happen to us.” For all the horror movie characters who end up as corpses - victims to the slaughter - there are those who escape their demise. One particular type of survivor - the ‘final girl' - is the subject of much fascination for today's guest. Isaura Barbé-Brown is a horror expert, and writes for the British Film Institute, Den of Geek, and the Bloody Women journal from Final Girls. In this Halloween special of the podcast, she explores the horror genre through a female lens - celebrating the heroic (and sometimes ghoulish) female protagonists who make it out alive. Isaura set Mark the challenge of watching the following films, which are all up for review in this episode: A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night - by Ana Lily Amirpour Revenge - by Coralie Fargeat Ravenous - by Antonia Bird Trouble Everyday - by Claire Denis Eve's Bayou - by Kasi Lemons Teeth - by Mitchell Lichtenstein (AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!) In this episode, you will learn: How horror can be just as, if not more impactful when you flip the narrative, and stop relying on the same old notions of female fear and vulnerability. That you don't have to avoid classic tropes, like jump scares, in order to do something revolutionary. Why it's so important to think deeply about your audience, and the message you'd like them to take away from your work, no matter what genre you're writing for. Find out more about Isaura here. In which the Mister joins me in reviewing A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT (2014), currently available to watch on AMC+ and Tubi, but also for rent on Prime. The film, written and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, follows the Girl (Sheila Vand), a vampire who inhabits an Iranian town called Bad City and who watches over and doles out punishment on the worst of the town's citizens. Here she meets Arash (Arash Marandi) and falls in love with the troubled young man. The film is gorgeously filmed in black and white but sadly the story itself doesn't offer any new or interesting stories to add to the vampire lore. The film is 1 h and 41 m and is unrated PG-13. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jokagoge/support
What do a vampire, a pregnant lady, a pious nurse, a film censor, and an urban legend have in common? They're the main characters that appear in the final part of our trilogy of episodes focusing on women horror directors. Get ready for some fresh new blood, as we discuss five movies from the past ten years!I don't know about you, but if I lived in a place called Bad City, I may not be too excited to be out walking alone at night. Of course, if I were a vampire, I would probably be a lot more confident about it. Which just happens to be the case in Ana Lily Amirpour's A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014).Not having the personal experience, I cannot be certain, but it seems like pregnancy might make me want to kill people, just in general. But her unborn child is actually very demanding about Ruth knocking off certain people. I guess that it probably just doesn't feel right telling her no. Which leads to a little Prevenge (2016), from writer, director, star Alice Lowe.Maud seems like a responsible, polite caregiver. As long as you don't mind that she gets a little hung up on saving your soul. And she might have a history of doing things that are somewhat unhinged. Filmmaker Rose Glass introduces us to Saint Maud (2019)Ah, the video nasty era. The perfect setting for a horror movie about a film censor. But Enid cannot seem to let go of a tragic event from her past. It's an obsession that leads her down a path of self-destruction in Prano Bailey-Bond's Censor (2021).Didn't we talk about this guy before? We sure did! But this is a totally different guy. Director Nia DaCosta lets us in on a little secret. That a number of unfortunate souls have been cursed to fill this role. Try your best to stay away from mirrors! And definitely don't say Candyman (2021) five times!
What an amazing time having a chat with the incredible Ana Lily Amirpour. British-born American film director, producer, actor, writer and editor for her critically acclaimed films "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night" (starring Sheila Vand and Arash Marandi), "The Bad Batch" (starring Suki Waterhouse, Jason Momoa, Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves) and up coming film "Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon" (starring Kate Hudson, Ed Skrein, Craig Robinson and Jun Jong Seo). Her film "A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night" (2014) was described as "the first Iranian vampire spaghetti western" premiered at Sundance Film Festival, and won awards such as the Revelations Prize in 2014, the Carnet Jove Jury Award, nominated for the Halekulani Golden Orchid award at the Hawaii International Film Festival and Lily has since been called "the next Tarantino" by VICE creative director Eddy Moretti. Basically she is an absolute BAD ASS creating the most INCREDIBLE pieces of art. Her next film "The Bad Batch" (2016) is to this day one of my favourite films and in 2016 won the Special Jury Prize at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival where it premiered (an absolute must watch!) I have been a HUGE fan of her work since I fell in love with The Bad Batch a few years back, and am waiting excitedly for her up and coming project releasing soon, "Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon". Lily thank you for coming on the show and giving me your time and knowledge, I am immensely inspired by you and your work. Instagram Ana Lily Amirpour Joshua Eady

Welcome back to the heat of the….bite! It's No More Room In Hell #42On this episode Mr. Venom, Mike, & Derek return from the holidays…and then some. After many delays and postponings, episode #42 is finally here. We get things started with catching up on things we've watched & played including TCM 2022 that turns into an impromptu burning question (and more) segment that Mike sort of already had planned, but Derek unleashed the beast early so we just get right into a discussion on expectations for movies and why they could be a bad thing, but also some pushback on that very idea with some justifications for setting expectations. Not a whole lot of news, but we do talk about some of the new adapations of familiar movies in the works. After that we get into our double feature picked by Mr. Venom, THIRST & A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT. NMRIH #42 is now ready to take a big bite out of!
Danielle and Millie discuss A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT (2014) and JUST ANOTHER GIRL ON THE I.R.T. (1992), sad 80's commercials, slappin' walls, and how every vampire is a freelancer. It's spooky season, and you know what that means: time for another thrilling and chilling re:verb Halloween Special! This year, Alex and Calvin are honored to be joined on the mic by Dr. Bernadette Marie Calafell, Professor and Department Chair of Critical Race and Ethnic Studies at Gonzaga University, and the recent recipient of the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Critical Cultural Studies division of the National Communication Association. Dr. Calafell's research explores the concept of monstrosity in academia, popular culture, and politics: both how marginalized and minoritized peoples are deemed “monstrous” by dominant cultural imaginaries, and how oppressed groups often reclaim monster status as a means of empowerment. In addition, Dr. Calafell's more recent invited talks have addressed how horror films and TV in the (post-) Trump era have been influenced by monstrous policies such as child separation at the border. In explaining her rich and insightful readings of these diverse cultural works, Dr. Calafell helps us to understand how horror is a contested genre in which racialized, queer, and otherwise-marginalized subjects are both written out of and into our broader imaginaries -- from the underdeveloped queer possibilities of Get Out to the expansive queer utopia imagined by A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night. In the course of our conversation, we reference a whole slew of recent monster movies and TV (listed in full below), and we nerd out with Dr. Calafell over our shared, undying love for the multimedia work of Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim.
