How incredible are all the ship and planetary designs in this film? Should they have kept the entire story on the mining colony and had the xenos just chasing them down there? How great is David Jonsson in this film, portraying both Andy and Upgraded Andy? Is Bjorn the most annoying character in the entire franchise? And yeah, this Ian Holm decision is truly repugnant! Alien Romulus is proof that anything with a Xenomorph in it should only allow Ridley Scott on set as a Producer. It's a much needed return to the Xenomorph-verse that gives the audience nonstop nerve-wrecking action, just enough sci to fi, nostalgic easter eggs, and fun elements adapted directly from the more recent Aliens videos game like Alien: Isolation. This film does an amazing job if amping up the anticipation for the upcoming FX TV Series, Alien: Earth. Cailee Spaeny fills the shoes of Ripley very well and David Jonsson deserves all the praise for his performance as Andy, an android who gets an upgrade in autonomy. We explore the wild universe of the Alien franchise as we confront its latest installment Alien: Romulus (2024) directed by Fede Alvarez. We briefly talk about Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Alien 3 (1992), Alien Resurrection (1997), AVP (2004), AVP:R (2007), Prometheus (2012), and Alien: Covenant (2017) before we ascend the sacred Burbank 16 steps to watch this movie in IMAX. We were pleasantly surprised at this interquel, which takes place between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). It stars a younger group of actors this time including Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Facehuggers and chestbursters abound! But let Ian Holm rest in peace!
This week on Comics and Chronic we discuss Alien Romulus directed by Fede Álvarez and starring Cailee Spaeny, Isabella Merced, David Jonsson, Aileen Wu, Spike Fearn, & Archie Renaux. Cody christens his new car with a speeding ticket & reminisces on his time in LA with Jake. The origins of Jake's diahrrea remains unsolved. Cody struggles to pronounce “Romulus”. Andy the android is agreed upon to be everyone's favorite character in this movie. Is Andy is autistic coded? Cody uses his mutant ability to rank the Alien franchise. Anthony criticizes the CGI. Anthony & Cody discuss their favorite movies of 2024. Cailee Spaeny is an actress to watch out for. Anthony feels the movie is too familiar for its own good. Do you agree? Aaron of The Oblivion Bar podcast gets a shout out & Anthony coins the term “Nostalgiabated”. Let us know in the comments and tune in today! This week, we watch the 7th film in the Alien franchise (not counting the AvP series) that aims to take it back to the feeling of the original by putting a horror movie director at the helm and by allowing the production to have mostly practical effects. The result is the scariest Alien film since the original. Alien: Romulus (2024), directed by Fede Alvarez.
Send us a textAs we blast off into our 4th Season here at Fabulous Film and Friends, and with the recent release of Alien Romulus, we thought it only fitting to take a look at ALL the Alien movies, minus the execrable Alien v. Predator films, starting with 1979's Alien directed by Ridley Scott and starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Harry Dean Stanton, Yaphett Koto, John Hurt, Veronica Cartright and Ian Holm followed by 1986's Aliens, directed by James Cameron and starring Sigourney Weaver again, joined by Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton, Lance Henrickson, Carrie Ann Henn, William Hope, Jeanette Goldstein, Mark Rolston Al Matthews, and Paul Reiser. Then we get 1992's Alien 3 directed by David Fincer, starring Weaver once again, with Charles S. Dutton, Charles Dance, Ralph Brown, Pete Postelwaite, Brian Glover, Holt MccAllany, Lance Henrickson and a veritable slew of bald British day players yelling, "You bloody wanker!" Then there's 1997's Alien Resurrection directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet starring Ms. Weaver, Winona Ryder, Ron Perlman, Dan Hedaya, Brad Dourif, JE Freeman, Kim Flowers Gary Dourdan, Dominique Pinon and Michael Wincott. Then there's a long break in the actual franchise with the aforementioned cash-grabs Alien v. Predator films thrown in the mix and the series starts up again in earnest with 2012's Ridley Scott directed prequel Prometheus starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall Green, Sean Harris, Rafe Spall, and Guy Pierce. In 2017 we're treated to Alien Covenant, once again directed by Ridley Scott starring Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Billy Cruddup, Danny McBride, Callie Hernandez, Carmen Ejogo, Guy Pearce, everybody's favorite prankster, Jussie Smollet and blink and you'll miss them cameos by Noomi Rapace and James Franco. Which leads us to 2024's Alien Romulus directed by Fede Alvarez and starring Callie Spaeny, David Jonsson, Isabella Merced, Archie Renaux, Aileen Wu, Spike Fearn and a posthumus Ian Holm. I'm your host Gino Caputi and the guests today are Burton Brown, David Johnson, DMD, Joe Field. With seven movies to cover we're going to get right into it, with one synopsis. Alien movies started off about a crew of space miners serving on the enormous mining vessel the Nostromo who while in cryosleep on their return to Earth with their minerals and ore in tow, are given orders to stop on the planet LV-426 to investigate a distress signal coming from a derelict spacecraft. While investigating the phenomena the crew inadvertently bring an alien on board their vessel. The Alien picks off the crew one by one and it is only warrant officer Ripley who survives by destroying the Nostromo and ultimately shooting the alien out into space. An internet meme sums it up thusly:Alien 1 - A team of miners faces an AlienAliens - A team of marines faces a lot of AliensAlien 3 - A group of convicts faces one AlienAlien Resurrection - A team of pirates face 5 AliensPrometheus - A team of scientists inadvertently create the AlienAlien Covenant - A team of colonists face a a lot of AliensAlien Romulus - A team of babyfaced Gen Z 'ers face a lot of AliensWhich is Queen of the Hive? In 1979, director Ridley Scott got caught up in the “Star Wars” hype and knew he needed to direct a space movie. That movie ended up being “Alien.” Now 45 years later, the Alien franchise is still alive and kicking with the new movie, “Alien: Romulus.” In this latest installment, we start out on a space mining planet with our main character, Rain, played by Cailee Spaeny. She's trying to find a way off this hazardous planet, to a better planet, with her “brother” Andy who is really a synthetic her Dad programmed to protect her. She then is presented with a plan to get them off the planet by her friend Tyler, which is to fly up to another ship floating above the planet and use that to escape. All of them get up there, along with some others in the group, only to realize it's not a ship. It's a seemingly deserted massive scientific space station. They move forward with their plan to find some cryo-pods to use for them to cryo-sleep they're way to the new planet but you know what they say about best laid plans. Little do they know that this space station isn't deserted, it's a graveyard. The reason it is, is still on board and this group unintentionally unleash it and its a nightmare from there. Soon Rain and the group are being chased down by alien face huggers looking to implant their alien seed. On top of that they have another synthetic trying to secure some corporate research from the space station and if humans have to die for it, so be it. The group aren't allowed off the space station until this mission is complete, all the while, having to try not to get killed or impregnated by killer aliens before the space station crashes. Is it good enough to blast off out of your house to go see? Check out this episode to find out. “Alien: Romulus” also stars David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, Aileen Wu, Rosie Ede, Soma Simon, Bence Okeke, Viktor Orizu, Robert Bobroczkyi, Trevor Newlin, Annemarie Griggs, Ian Holm and Daniel Betts. Dave, Mykal, and Ryan head over to Renaissance Station to steal some cryostasis tubes and power units only to find out that there is, truly, "Sum'in in the wa'er!" and discuss the most recent entry into the Alien film franchise, Fede Alvarez' "Alien: Romulus." The crew talk about their initial reactions to the film and what they enjoyed most about it, including the amazingly authentic set designs and practical effects, and the solid performances, especially from David Jonsson as the android Andy. They also talk about some of the aspects of the film that didn't work as well for them, such as some of the CGI work, the abundance of callbacks, and the wildly divisive ending. We truly hope you enjoy this latest episode and thank all of you new and longtime listeners for your support. Stay frosty!
Kelsi and Trey discuss the legacy of the 'Alien' franchise while exploring Fede Álvarez's disappointing 'Alien: Romulus.' Outside of a few notable set pieces, and the Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson performances, we're left surprised by this unoriginal, fan-service-heavy, mutation of Romulus' other Alien predecessors, such as Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant (which are much, much more conceptually interesting and deeply angry horror movies). “Alien: Romulus” is finally arriving in theaters this weekend, and folks, it's a must-see. Filmmaker Fede Álvarez returns to the show to chat with us about how he took on the classic action-horror franchise and made it his own while still rooting us in the familiar universe we love. The level of detail he and his team brought to the project is truly incredible, and he goes into great detail in our interview about recreating that 1980s horror feel. We also chat about his incredible cast including Cailee Spaeney and David Jonsson, the pair set in the emotional heart of the whole movie. We get teases for some Easter eggs and dangling threads for fans to sniff out, and even a big spoiler moment we can't wait to share. That said, we are waiting. Stay tuned to our channels to be the first to see that amazing bit from the interview as soon as it drops. This week, Megan fills Evan and Dave in on CLOSE TO YOU (1:31), starring Elliot Page (who also co-wrote the story) in Dominic Savage's tender and emotional indie drama as Sam, who journeys home for his father's birthday, his first trip to his hometown since his transition. We follow that up with SKINCARE (9:18), Austin Peters's thriller starring Elizabeth Banks as Hope, an esthetician with a line of products about to hit the marketplace. Unfortunately, another esthetician opens a location directly across from her, and wouldn't you know? Someone steals Hope's identity and messes with her in a way that could tank her product launch. We wish we could say we loved it. (We didn't.) Finally, Megan and Dave talk about ALIEN: ROMULUS (32:23), the Fede Álvarez-directed sci-fi horror interquel starring Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson. It takes the ALIEN series in a different direction, sorta, if not for all the derivative plot conventions and it lifts from just about every other ALIEN film. It has its moments (and it's better than Ridley Scott's last two hack jobs), but it's a mixed bag. Over on Patreon, we talk about the 1989 teen satire HEATHERS, starring Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, in honor of co-star Shannen Doherty.
