Andrew Scott is the latest in a long line of actors to play Thomas Ripley - the seductive, sociopathic conman created by American crime writer Patricia Highsmith, and immortalised in films from Plein Soleil to The Talented Mr Ripley. Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode look at Ripley and other social strivers on screen, asking how these interlopers have insinuated themselves into our hearts and minds.Ellen explores what makes Patricia Highsmith's work so cinematic, with a lifelong Highsmith fan – critic and novelist Kim Newman. And she speaks to Swiss documentary filmmaker Eva Vitija about her 2022 film Loving Highsmith – a fascinating look at the author's life and artistry, told through her unpublished diaries, and interviews with her friends and former lovers.Mark Kermode looks beyond Highsmith's work, to explore how the 'Ripleyesque' figure has endured. He discusses cinema's most notorious interlopers, from The Great Gatsby to Saltburn, with Manuela Lazic, a French critic, writer and filmmaker. Mark also talks to two of his favourite filmmakers, Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor. Christine and Joe's newest film Baltimore – about the debutante turned IRA member Rose Dugdale – is just one of many stories about interloping and identity that they've brought to the screen over the years. They tell Mark why the theme fascinates them. Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

In this final episode of 2023 (and season 18), we (Neil and Dario) ruminate on a year spent thinking cinematically and engaging with cinema in the unique way that has become the hallmark of The Cinematologists; thoughtful, personal, searching for meaning and meaningful experiences across the movie spectrum. We both share brief discussions of two films that stuck with us from different points of the year, Neil talking about Mark Jenkin's short A Dog Called Discord and Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor's The Future Tense, while Dario ponders Patricio Guzman's My Imaginary Country and Samsara, directed by Lois Patiño. Then, we spend more time discussing three films each at greater length in what could be seen as their top 3 films of the year, if we were so inclined to frame them that way (and we go to great pains in the episode to make sure that they don't come across as ‘ranked'). Dario shares his thoughts on and fondness for Laura Poitras's All The Beauty and the Bloodshed, Celine Song's Past Lives and Todd Haynes's May December. While Neil decides to go deep on Cyril Schäublin's Unrest (which he shamefully claims is set in the 1920s when it's clearly late 19th Century!), Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch's The Eight Mountains and Aki Kaurismäki's Fallen Leaves. ——— Thank you to all our guests this season and to our listeners, we thank you for your continued support of The Cinematologists, and hope you join us for season 19, which commences in February 2024. ——— You can listen to The Cinematologists for free, wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow. Producers/Hosts: Jim Campbell and Amy Browne This series is made possible in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission Maine: The Way Life Could Be, a series in which we look at challenges and opportunities facing Maine in the lifetimes of people alive today. This episode: At the outset of this series, we invited anyone interested to participate in a Zoom call to help us gather information on what folks saw as major challenges facing Maine people during the lifetime of those alive today. One of those challenges mentioned by several of the participants on that call was affordable and accessible health care. It's important to note right at the beginning of today's program that health care and health insurance are two different things that are sometimes conflated. Health care refers to the care that providers such as doctors, nurses, therapists, and others provide to people with health issues. How to pay for that care is a separate challenge, often provided in part by either for-profit insurance companies or government programs such as Medicaid, for those with very low incomes; or Medicare, for those age 65 and over. On today's program, we will speak with two retired physicians who, over long careers, took somewhat different paths but wound up at the same conclusion about how to provide Maine people, and all Americans, with affordable, accessible health care. Guests: Dr. Geoff Gratwick practiced medicine with a specialty in rheumatology in the Bangor area, and in clinics across Maine for over 40 years. He eventually became so concerned about what he saw as problems with Mainers getting access to quality health care that he ran for the Maine Senate after serving 9 years on the Bangor City Council. He served four terms in the Maine Senate before leaving because of term limits, and while there served on the Opioid Task Force, as well as on several legislative committees. He was a key player in establishing the state's Health Care Task Force which has been charged with determining how to make health care in Maine universal, affordable, accessible and of high quality. Dr. Phil Caper, in addition to practicing as a physician, spent a good part of his career in policy areas related to health care. From 1971 to 1976, he was a professional staff member on the United States Senate Labor and Public Welfare's subcommittee on Health. He served on the National Council on Health Planning and Development from 1977 to 1984, chairing the panel from 1980 to 1984. He has also taught at Dartmouth Medical School, the University of Massachusetts Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health, and worked in private industry trying to improve the technology of hospital medical records. Both guests are active with Maine AllCare FMI: Maine AllCare From the National Bankruptcy Forum, 10/22/21: 10 Statistics about US Medical Debt that Will Shock You Health care executive pay soars during pandemic, Bob Herman, AXIOS, Jun 14, 2021 Universal health care could have saved more than 338,000 lives from COVID-19 alone, Rachel Nuwer, Scientific American, June 13, 2022 Sudden resolution of Anthem and Maine Med dispute leaves more questions than answers, Caitlin Andrews, Bangor Daily News, 8/20/22 2022 Maine Shared Community Health Needs Assessment Report Hidden charges, denied claims: Medical bills leave patients confused, frustrated, helpless, Joe Lawlor, Portland Press Herald, 8/21/22 About the hosts: Jim Campbell has a longstanding interest in the intersection of digital technology, law, and public policy and how they affect our daily lives in our increasingly digital world. He has banged around non-commercial radio for decades and, in the little known facts department (that should probably stay that way), he was one of the readers voicing Richard Nixon's words when NPR broadcast the entire transcript of the Watergate tapes. Like several other current WERU volunteers, he was at the station's sign-on party on May 1, 1988 and has been a volunteer ever since doing an early stint as a Morning Maine host, and later producing WERU program series including Northern Lights, Conversations on Science and Society, Sound Portrait of the Artist, Selections from the Camden Conference, others that will probably come to him after this is is posted, and, of course, Notes from the Electronic Cottage. Amy Browne started out at WERU as a volunteer news & public affairs producer in 2000, co-hosting/co-producing RadioActive with Meredith DeFrancesco. She joined the team of Voices producers a few years later, and has been WERU's News & Public Affairs Manager since January, 2006. In addition to RadioActive, Voices, Maine Currents and Maine: The Way Life Could Be, Amy also produced and hosted the WERU News Report for several years. She has produced segments for national programs including Free Speech Radio News, This Way Out, Making Contact, Workers Independent News, Pacifica PeaceWatch, and Live Wire News, and has contributed to Democracy Now and the WBAI News Report. She is the recipient of the 2014 Excellence in Environmental Journalism Award from the Sierra Club of Maine, and Maine Association of Broadcasters awards for her work in 2017 and 2021. This gripping and beautifully rendered drama from filmmakers Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor, Rose Plays Julie, tells the tale of Rose, a young veterinary student who has wanted to know who her biological parents are and the facts of her true identity for as long as she can remember. Rose (Ann Skelly) decides to contact Ellen (Orla Brady), the birth mother who gave her up for adoption. But Ellen, now a successful London-based actress, doesn't want to know her. Undeterred, Rose presses forward. And curiosity leads her to discoveries that shake the fragile identity she has built for herself. With Rose Plays Julie co-directors Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor have crafted a slow-burn thriller that builds a sense of dread inside an exquisite world of immaculate architecture, rendered through an icy performance style and enveloped by a claustrophobic soundtrack. Ann Skelly and Orla Brady are both exacting and measured in their delivery, as the film takes us through longing and revenge to arrive at the dark places of power and its abuses. Joining us to talk about their meticulous work of Rose Plays Julie are co-directors Christine Malloy and Joe Lawlor. The filmmaking duo work under the moniker of Desperate Optimists, having spent years making atmospheric cinema that often wades into the deep psychology of identity, personal trauma, as they dive into the complicated and the inherently elusive nature of truth. Sometimes you have to appreciate the journey and understand that actions will always have a reaction. 'Rose Plays Julie' is the story of Rose (Ann Skelly) who is at university studying veterinary science. An only child, she has enjoyed a loving relationship with her adoptive parents. However, for as long as Rose can remember she has wanted to know who her biological parents are and the facts of her true identity. After years trying to trace her birth mother, Rose now has a name and a number. All she has to do is pick up the phone and call. When she does it quickly becomes clear that her birth mother has no wish to have any contact. Rose is shattered. A renewed and deepened sense of rejection compels her to keep going. Rose travels from Dublin to London in an effort to confront her birth mother, Ellen (Orla Brady). Ellen is deeply disturbed when Rose turns up unannounced. The very existence of this young woman threatens the stability of the new life Ellen has painstakingly put together. But Rose proves very tenacious and Ellen is forced to reveal a secret she has kept hidden for over 20 years. This shocking revelation forces Rose to accept the violent nature of how she came into existence. Rose believes she has little to lose but much to gain when she sets out to confront her biological father, Peter (Aidan Gillen). What Rose cannot possibly foresee is that she is on a collision course that will prove both violent and unsettling – dark forces gather and threaten to destroy her already fragile sense of her own identity. To put it simply this is a brilliant film and we got the distinct pleasure to sit down with the writer/director's of this stunning film Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy in advance of it's release on VOD and select Virtual Cinema platforms today. We talked about the inspiration for the film, the process that Joe and Christine like to work in as they tell stories and the art of letting the wheels turn inside their characters heads rather then hitting audiences over the head with it as storytellers. Hello, Hello and welcome my Cave Dweller Community. As you all know, my name is Anthony, and I am your host of The Neanderthal Mind. Joining me on today's episode is Joe Lawlor, Primitive Weapons and Tool Maker. Neanderthal Joe, as he is known by His Community, is also a Primitive designer of Jewelry, Clothing and Leather tote bags as well as hide working furs for everyday uses. Neanderthal Joe is well versed and well-polished in the Levallois Style of Flint knapping, common among Mousterian Neanderthal Sites. He creates all of his designs using the Primitive Neanderthal Techniques of Hammer Stone, Bone Hammer, Horsehair, Milkweed Fiber, Pine pitch and good ole wood whittling. You can check all of his creations on His Facebook Shop, Neanderthal Joe's Shop. I will have all his Social Media Homes listed in the Show Notes. Neanderthal Joe will be joining us for two episodes. I had to break it up into two episodes due to so much awesome content, knowledge and history of Primitive Tools, weapons, jewelry and clothing that Neanderthal Joe throws down during our Hour plus conversation. We also touch on when and why Neanderthal Joe got into Flint Knapping, and what started his love for Neanderthals, on a weekend stay with his Gram and they wanted to go to one of the Local (Ontario Canada) Museums. So, without further ado, Join me and Neanderthal Joe in a sit down conversation about Primitive Life and the tools, weapons and articles made of fur and hide that helped our Ancestors survive millions of years, so, let's get this wheel rolling my Cave Dweller Community. Facebook group main platform:https://www.facebook.com/groups/170118903534062/?ref=shareShop page (Facebook)https://www.facebook.com/Neanderjoe/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/CHTgTn4rVUR/?igshid=rmkpg6l2kn40YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC5e-E4ZgFeN19YVQ9k5fhJAEtsy:https://etsy.me/2IfGi3wMinds page:https://www.minds.com/neanderthaljoe

Sam Gunderson is one of Reston's original guitar heroes. His knowledge of music and love of grooves allows him to navigate easily between blues, rock, hip-hop, go-go, and more. Gunderson grew up listening to Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Randy Rhoads, while also learning at the feet of other local legends such as Jon Rustad and Mike Davis of The Iceboxers and Joe Lawlor of Egypt. Gunderson jammed with keyboardist David Linsenmayer early on in elementary school, but it wasn't until they met drummer Gabe Kader and bass player Lefty Furr that they were able to form a real band. Those four came together, naming themselves Crunchy Water after the Dweezil Zappa song, and started writing the songs that would be the backbone of their sets at Jam for Man and beyond. At the same time, Gunderson joined Kader's brother, Tarik, in the diverse go-go band Split Decision. After high school, Gunderson formed the band Cactus Groove and has continued to play with those musicians off and on for decades. Gunderson eventually moved farther down south to Birmingham, Alabama, and continues to learn from the rich blues tradition there, while also marrying and forming a band with his wife, the SBG's. You can stay current on Gunderson's many projects and shows at https://www.facebook.com/samgun00/.

Medicaid is the country's largest public healthcare system. It made up 17% of the federal budget last year. The program subsidizes healthcare costs for people with low incomes, people with disabilities, and families with children. While Medicaid is mainly funded by the US government, states provide funding too. That means enrollment criteria and costs change from state to state and from year to year depending on state policy. So sometimes it gets a little confusing. Health and human services reporter Joe Lawlor sat down with editorial page editor Greg Kesich to untangle the  overlapping systems and detail the recent and upcoming changes to MaineCare, the state's name for its Medicaid administration program. In the last of our suite of salons, Experimenta programmer and BFI head of cinemas Helen de Witt takes Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor's (aka Desperate Optimists) Further Beyond and Alia Syed's On a Wing and a Prayer as the point of departure for a conversation about journey, exile, and personal and formal risk-taking. Raising questions about the unreliability of mediation through narrative, and responding to a hazardous situation through recreating and embodying biographical details, both films use bravely exposed formal innovation to throw light on all too current questions of migration and displacement.
