On this week's episode, I'm joined by filmmaker Jim Hickcox (Slow Creep, Soft Matter), who brings us the greatest zombie/rock film of all time, WILD ZERO, starring Guitar Wolf!!! We discuss the Japanese garage rock scene and Guitar Wolf's stature within it, what is Jet Rock N' Roll, how Guitar Wolf made the loudest record ever recorded, Bass Wolf & Drum Wolf's non-stop hair combing in this movie, Guitar Wolf's pro-Trans stance in the film, going to video stores rather than record stores while on tour, how the film's visual style predates Shaun Of The Dead, fast vs. slow zombies, how the concert footage of Guitar Wolf in the movie is incredible, the choice of killing the best characters early in a film, how the film has a surprisingly enormous heart, squibs & head explosions, the Aerosmith arcade game, filmmaker Aki Kaurismäki, Jim's dance sequence at the end of his film, the difficulties of recommending horror films to others, the unfilled plot to Wild Zero 2 and I go through an utter transformation during the recording of this episode. So come scream “Love Is Love” into a flaming microphone while lightning strikes the stage on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie!JIM HICKCOX:www.jimhickcox.com/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Christian Zyp interviews Matt Barats (writer/actor) and Anthony Oberbeck (writer/actor) about their film REVERIES: THE MIND PRISON. You can see the World Premiere as part of the Calgary Underground Film Festival (CUFF) Sunday April 20th, 2025 at 6:45 pm at the Globe Cinema. Director Graham Mason and Screenwriters/ Stars Matt Barats & Anthony Oberbeck will be in attendance.REVERIES: THE MIND PRISON is a comedy movie/art film hybrid, a sprawling experiment in unbridled creativity and collaboration. Told through a combination of narrative scenes, abstract video montages, and meditative voice-overs, it's best described as Aki Kaurismäki meets a lo-fi KOYAANISQATSI narrated by Steven Wright, or as Vulture magazine put it, “Like an Ayahuasca session conducted by Mitch Hedberg.” This is the third movie in a trilogy that includes the comedy art films REVERIES (2018, 46m) and REVERIES: GOING DEEPER (2020, 60m).Matt Barats: https://www.mattbarats.com/reveriesGraham Mason: https://www.graham-mason.com/Anthony Oberbeck: https://vimeo.com/anthonyoberbeckWatch REVERIES: https://vimeo.com/288091227Watch REVERIES: GOING DEEPER: https://vimeo.com/491265630

Get access to this entire episode as well as all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.We discuss the winner of our latest Patreon poll: Aki Kaurismäki's The Match Factory Girl, the story of a young working class woman, Iris, looking for love and a sense of belonging in industrialized Helsinki. The final installment of Kaurismäki's 'Proletariat Trilogy', the film resembles that of a fable that takes an unexpected and comically violent turn as Iris seeks revenge on those who have done her wrong. We describe the film's sparse formal elements - an abbreviated runtime, minimal dialogue, nominal use of diegetic music, and austere mise en scène - and how it employs these components to reflect Iris' profound subjugation. Then, we examine the film's narrative and how it functions, briefly, as a mechanized process, mirroring its opening assembly line sequence and asking us to connect modes of production with an atomized social structure. Last, we discuss the film's final act, and how constant reminder of our own unfreedom often results in unexpected, volatile response.....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish
Programledare: Martin WicklinProducent: Filip BohmKontakt: sondagsintervjun@sr.se
Our introduction to the films of Belgian brothers Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, La promesse (1996) is, like last week's Le Havre, a story of African migrants in Europe. But where Aki Kaurismäki took a more magical approach, the Dardenne's hew much closer to the intense realism of, say, Ken Loach. The brothers' history in documentary perhaps make it even more intense than what Loach we've seen. It's a story of rejecting what you've been told is the order the world must work in, and finding the community and care that your heart cries out for. A better world may be illegal, but it remains possible.
Aki Kaurismäki's Le Havre (2011) is a hard movie to categorize. It's the dramatic tale of solidarity and sanctuary, of a community setting aside petty differences to protect a vulnerable migrant. But it's not social realism; It's more magical than that. Some critics call it fairy tale-esque, Pat calls it a children's story, none of them to dismiss it. The moral here is one of a kids' book, but it's a child's morality that needs to lead us: Community brings life. And that's not a miracle; it's a fact.

《The Other Side of hope (《The Other Side of Hope 希望的另一面》封面,收听地址:网易云、苹果音乐)听完这张专辑之后,我发现郭采洁一直以来的梦幻与自由,在里面得到了延续和强化,但同时也增加了很多的怪诞色彩还有丰富度。

In this final episode of 2023 (and season 18), we (Neil and Dario) ruminate on a year spent thinking cinematically and engaging with cinema in the unique way that has become the hallmark of The Cinematologists; thoughtful, personal, searching for meaning and meaningful experiences across the movie spectrum. We both share brief discussions of two films that stuck with us from different points of the year, Neil talking about Mark Jenkin's short A Dog Called Discord and Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor's The Future Tense, while Dario ponders Patricio Guzman's My Imaginary Country and Samsara, directed by Lois Patiño. Then, we spend more time discussing three films each at greater length in what could be seen as their top 3 films of the year, if we were so inclined to frame them that way (and we go to great pains in the episode to make sure that they don't come across as ‘ranked'). Dario shares his thoughts on and fondness for Laura Poitras's All The Beauty and the Bloodshed, Celine Song's Past Lives and Todd Haynes's May December. While Neil decides to go deep on Cyril Schäublin's Unrest (which he shamefully claims is set in the 1920s when it's clearly late 19th Century!), Felix van Groeningen and Charlotte Vandermeersch's The Eight Mountains and Aki Kaurismäki's Fallen Leaves. ——— Thank you to all our guests this season and to our listeners, we thank you for your continued support of The Cinematologists, and hope you join us for season 19, which commences in February 2024. ——— You can listen to The Cinematologists for free, wherever you listen to podcasts: click here to follow. Musician Owen Ashworth (Advance Base) joins our ongoing "Alone for the Holidays" series with a discussion of JEANNE DIELMAN, 23 QUAI DU COMMERCE, 1080 BRUXELLES starring Delphine Seyrig. At the age of 25, Chantal Akerman wrote and directed this slow-burning Belgian drama depicting the daily chores of a widowed mother in exacting detail. Through a series of static long takes, we become accustomed to Jeanne Dielman's well-worn pattern of cooking, cleaning, caretaking, and sex work- until the pattern breaks down and her behavior grows increasingly erratic. When first screened at Cannes in 1975, JEANNE DIELMAN was met with a mixed reception, but subsequent re-evaluation deemed it a masterpiece of slow cinema. In the 2022 Sight and Sound poll, JEANNE DIELMAN was voted to be the greatest film of all time by critics, and is but one film of many in Akerman's body of work to grow in esteem since her 2015 death. Join us as we try to figure out the deal with DIELMAN, taking a few diversions into Aki Kaurismäki, Cold Mountain, Playtime, Afire, famous filming locations, housecleaning, and much, much more! Check out Owen's music with Advance Base: https://advancebasemusic.com/ Check out Owen's drawings: https://www.instagram.com/ownashworth JEANNE DIELMAN can currently be streamed with subscription to The Criterion Channel or Max.
This week we're excited to present a conversation with Alma Pöysti and Jussi Vatanen, the two lead actors of the NYFF61 Main Slate selection Fallen Leaves from director Aki Kaurismäki. Sweet-souled in story, scalpel-sharp in filmmaking precision, this enchanting love story from Finnish virtuoso Aki Kaurismäki circles around two financially strapped Helsinkians who keep finding and losing one another in a world that seems to be falling apart. Evoking dark-comic romances from his early career such as Shadows in Paradise and Ariel (NYFF27), the sardonic yet exquisitely melancholic Fallen Leaves devotes its wry, humane gaze to grocery clerk Ansa (Alma Pöysti) and construction laborer Holappa (Jussi Vatanen), who commence an on-again, off-again relationship of extreme tentativeness, while seeking employment and stability. As with the greatest of Kaurismäki's films, everyday details register as grand, meaningful cinematic gestures. This filmmaker has scrupulously carved another fictive universe out of a handful of specific, vivid locations, yet Fallen Leaves very much takes place in the world we're living in, which makes its surrender to hope all the more affecting. Winner of the Jury Prize at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Finland's official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2024 Academy Awards. A MUBI release. This conversation was moderated by The Wrap's Tomris Laffly.

"Fallen Leaves" had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize and received critical acclaim for Aki Kaurismäki's direction, screenplay, and the performances from Alma Pöysti & Jussi Vatanen. Finland has selected the MUBI film as their official selection for Best International Feature at the 96th Academy Awards, and it is now playing in limited release. Actors Alma Pöysti & Jussi Vatanen were kind enough to spend a few moments talking with us about their work on the film, collaborating with Kaurismäki, and more in this charming romantic film. Mika Panzar kertoo viettäneensä nostalgiapainotteisen viime viikonlopun.
Gut Ding will eben Weile haben.

Előző filmjéhez, A francia kiadáshoz hasonlóan most is fél Hollywood feltűnik pasztellszínű díszletei között. A versenyprogram egyik utolsónak ígérkező nagy meglepetése pedig Anh Hung Tran (A zöld papaya illata, A riksás fiú) visszatérése, a The Pot au Feu (magyarul kábé: Húsleves). Perhaps the most Finnish way to make a love letter to Finland is to make a movie that emphasizes a kind of remote inhabitability of a place and its people. No really: this movie about a deadpan population, their apathetic bureaucracy, an undercurrent of white nationalism in the streets of Helsinki, frigid weather, and truly unappetizing-looking food. And somehow under the direction of Aki Kaurismäki, the viewer - along with the lead character of a Syrian refugee struggling to survive in a cold, seemingly lifeless nation that doesn't want him there - is inevitably charmed by a nation we slowly learn to be more accurately characterized as emotionally reserved, but earnest. Distrustful, but generous. Suspicious and guarded, but maybe ultimately welcoming. If you'd like to watch ahead for next week's film, we will be discussing and reviewing Gregory La Cava's My Man Godfrey (1936).
Comedian and Podcaster Dave Hill joins Chris to talk about Top Gun: Maverick, Letterkenney, Shoresey, Better Call Saul, the films of Aki Kaurismäki, Outer Range, and more.
