For their 195th episode, two imposter film critics, two murderous dads, and two non-Italian school teachers, Will Johnson and Don Shanahan, stay in the monumental year of 1999 for one more week with another cornerstone film. Lapped at the time by the likes of "The Matrix," "American Beauty," "Magnolia," and "Fight Club," stands the late Anthony Minghella's salacious "The Talented Mr. Ripley" starring the early white-hot coals of Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Minghella's follow-up to his Oscar-winning "The English Patient," might have aged better than those previously mentioned 1999 bangers, and our guys are here to dote on its top-to-bottom lavishness. For this very special, bonus episode of the Radio Times Podcast, I, Kelly-Anne Taylor am joined by Oscar-winning Hollywood A listers, Matt Damon and Casey Affleck. They both grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts and have been friends since childhood. Their teenage years were spent travelling to New York to auditions – and both eventually dropped out of university (Matt from Harvard, and Casey from Columbia) to pursue acting full-time. And – it paid off. Matt rose to fame, writing and starring in Good Will Hunting – and went on to carve out a rich and brilliant career, with movies like The Martian, The Talented Mr Ripley, and Jason Bourne. Similarly, Casey Affleck, the younger brother of Ben Affleck, has also made his mark – winning an Oscar for his turn in Manchester by the Sea. Now, the pair have teamed up for Apple TV's action-packed heist drama, The Instigators. They play two strangers from different walks of life, thrown together to rob a corrupt politician. In this episode, we talk about how they met, handling fame and press intrusion – and, how being behind the screens has given them greater autonomy over their careers. This week's classic is a sexy Italian romp (no magicians or magic, sorry Kat) with The Talented Mr. Ripley! The real question is - when would you have cracked? For Kat, it's pretty early on. Please give your most detailed answers below:
On our latest weekly roundup, Catherine needed some tech support, and Terri needed to spend a lot of time following the latest Taylor-Travis news. Mentioned: The Senior Swifties Sideline. What we're watching: After watching the Ripley TV series, we decided to visit/revisit the 1999 movie, The Talented Mr. Ripley. Tom and co. are younger, in color, and more focused on music than visual art (no detours to the Italian Renaissance) in this version, but there's no cat! Mentioned: Purple Noon, a French movie adaptation of the story.Catherine's library find this week is a first novel that's gotten a lot of attention since it was published in 2022: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. It's a charming story with two unlikely leads: A 70-year-old cleaning woman and a giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed a new member of Terri's family (July 3, 2023), the work-life seesaw (July 1, 2020), and fake life deadlines (July 3, 2019). Disclaimer: Terri is not a Medicare expert. Go to https://www.ssa.gov/medicare/sign-up/part-b-only for official Part B info.Next week, we will be debuting a new format. As our kids have become adults, we find ourselves more interested in getting caught up on movies and streaming than in going over the same parenting topics over and over. So we're going to talk about what we're watching, what we thought about it, and maybe what parenting advice we can take from it, if only what not to do.We'll check out an older TV show or movie and a newer one each week, starting with Lost as our oldie (S1 E1, "Pilot: Part 1") and A Gentleman in Moscow as our newcomer (S1 E1, "A Master of Circumstance"). Follow along!
Our latest guest on Soundtracking is actor Andrew Scott, who joined Edith in front of an audience as part of our Everyman Soundtracking Film Club to discuss the critically-lauded Netflix series, Ripley. Shot in black and white, it's a dark, brooding and beautiful retelling of Patricia Highsmith's classic novel The Talented Mr Ripley - in which Andrew delivers a performance as the titular antihero described by the Guardian newspaper as 'absolutely spellbinding'.
Enthralling from start to finish and probably one of the more popular and successful films we've reviewed here at I Finally Watched... Andrew Scott is the latest in a long line of actors to play Thomas Ripley - the seductive, sociopathic conman created by American crime writer Patricia Highsmith, and immortalised in films from Plein Soleil to The Talented Mr Ripley. Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode look at Ripley and other social strivers on screen, asking how these interlopers have insinuated themselves into our hearts and minds.Ellen explores what makes Patricia Highsmith's work so cinematic, with a lifelong Highsmith fan – critic and novelist Kim Newman. And she speaks to Swiss documentary filmmaker Eva Vitija about her 2022 film Loving Highsmith – a fascinating look at the author's life and artistry, told through her unpublished diaries, and interviews with her friends and former lovers.Mark Kermode looks beyond Highsmith's work, to explore how the 'Ripleyesque' figure has endured. He discusses cinema's most notorious interlopers, from The Great Gatsby to Saltburn, with Manuela Lazic, a French critic, writer and filmmaker. Mark also talks to two of his favourite filmmakers, Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor. Christine and Joe's newest film Baltimore – about the debutante turned IRA member Rose Dugdale – is just one of many stories about interloping and identity that they've brought to the screen over the years. They tell Mark why the theme fascinates them. Producer: Jane Long A Prospect Street production for BBC Radio 4

How's the peepin', Tommy? Netflix's RIPLEY series is still more than a month away from dropping, but guest Emily VanKoughnett (Los Angeles Review of Books; LIT ANGELES) joins the BTTM crew to discuss Patricia Highsmith's classic murder story from 1955, THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, and the 1999 film adaptation from writer-director Anthony Minghella, starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow... and the incomparable Philip Seymour Hoffman. TOMMY! (There's a little chat about 1960's PURPLE NOON too, but everybody didn't watch that one.) Hosted by Tyler Austin, Justin Remer, and Allan Traylor. Produced by Justin Remer. Recorded at the LAPL Octavia Lab. Opening music: "Optimism (Instrumental)" by Duck the Piano Wire. Closing Music: "Rule of 3s (Solemnity Child)" by Elastic No-No Band.
Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow and the rest of the terrific cast of The Talented Mr. Ripley were all in the middle of a remarkable run of greatness in the late '90s, but this is the thriller that sometimes gets forgotten. Is this Damon's best performance? It's certainly the rare killer he's played...and he's really good at being bad. The boring leech is a top-notch liar...and, oh, there's that ever-fascinating angle where an actor plays a character who has to act. This is Anthony Minghella at his best, both his clever screenplay and his direction. And this is the guy who directed the Oscar juggernaut that was The English Patient. Fun ride. So realize it's better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody as our 564th European jaunt takes Have You Ever Seen into the sinister world of The Talented Mr. Ripley. The more we keep thinking about Skrulls the more questions we keep having. The biggest problem with Skrulls are if they're even a problem. Sure they can look like your dad but who cares? Some people said I looked like Jeff Buckley when I was younger, didn't do much for me or Jeff (he was dead at the time). Now if I had done a Talented Mr Ripley on ol' Jeffy boy, that's bad! But I didn't, so who cares? Plus why are the Skrulls relying on Fury for anything? The Skrulls are better than humans on every level. The Skrulls are Skrulls! Fury's an old man! This show is silly, we advise you don't watch it. Two dads tho? Now there's a show. Three? My three dads??
