What Happened Next: a podcast about newish books

My guest on this episode is Leigh Nash. Leigh has worked as the publisher at House of Anansi Press and Invisible Publishing, and is now the co-publisher at Assembly Press, a brand-new independent literary press. She also helps run the PEP Rally Reading Series out of Books & Company in Picton and co-founded The Emergency Response Unit, a chapbook press. Her most recent book was also her debut: the collection Goodbye, Ukulele, published by Mansfield Press in 2010. The scholarly journal Canadian Literature said Leigh “has an eye for unsettling images” and praised Goodbye, Ukulele as “a compelling read.” Leigh and I talk about the founding of Assembly Press, about her ongoing love for her debut collection, and about how the world of books has changed in the quarter-century since its publication. This podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus. Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. Used with permission.

Leigh Nash and Matt Slocum of Sixpence None the Richer join Caroline Hobby for this episode of Get Real. Leigh and Matt share about being ‘two kids from New Braunfels, Texas' that went on to find massive success with iconic hits like “Kiss Me” and “There She Goes.” Leigh, lead singer of the group, grew up wanting to be the next (fellow Texan) Tanya Tucker. Leigh and Matt described not being ‘cool' enough to break into the Austin music scene, but they were accepted in the Dallas scene. Matt would get out of college classes and drive himself and Leigh, who was still in high school, up to Dallas to perform and that's how they got their start. The two detail their love / hate relationship with “Kiss Me” which was a massive hit early in their career, prompted by tv/movie placements like “She's All That” and “Dawson's Creek.” They discuss getting a massive break with David Letterman having them on his show to perform and then pulling them in for an unplanned interview. Leigh and Matt share about the pressures of fame and success and going through a season of burn out and more. Yes… the iconic frontwoman for Sixpence None The Richer! For more than a quarter century, Leigh Nash's instantly recognizable voice has been a fixture in modern pop, from her days as frontwoman for Sixpence None The Richer to her more recent output as an Americana solo artist. Rooted in the southern sounds that previously underscored albums like 2015's The State I'm In (her first Top 40 hit on Billboard's country chart), The Tide, Vol. 1 finds Nash working alongside other mainstays of modern music. Featuring collaborations with country icons like Vince Gill and Tanya Tucker, gospel singer CeCe Winans, and the GRAMMY-nominated singer/songwriter Ruby Amafu, the EP features a range of duets that highlight the full span of Nash's artistic interests. The record also earned Leigh Nash her first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry, marking another milestone for a lifelong musician who recorded platinum-certified hits like "Kiss Me" while in her early twenties. leighnash.netIG: @leighbirdnashSpotify: Leigh NashNEW album Follow Your Heart: https://orcd.co/followyourheart Keep in touch with Michael online: https://michaelfranti.com The Stay Human podcast is available wherever you listen to podcasts: https://stayhumanpodcast.com PODCAST EPISODE CREDITS:Executive Producers: Michael Franti and Activist Artists Management Producer: Angie Griffith for BPOSITIIVArtist Manager: Caitlin Stone for Activist Artists ManagementManagement Coordinator: Bryce Matthews for Activist Artists ManagementSocial Media Manager: Kaitlyn Parmenter for Alchemy Artist ServicesPresenting Sponsor: PactInstrumental from: “Crazy For You” by Michael Franti Editing by: Roger Gowdy for Page Turners Studio

“Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble,” said Congressman John Lewis. Leigh Nash and Matt Maher met for a song co-write honoring Lewis's wisdom, hoping to speak to issues of race in America. Knowing their white perspective was not sufficient for an honest song, some awkwardness and vulnerability led to a request of their third co-writer Ruby Amanfu. That gave rise to their moving song “Good Trouble.” Includes live performance. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

LEIGH NASH is perhaps best known as the pixie-like singer with the heavenly voice from Sixpence None the Richer. She rolled pop, folk and gospel influences into hit songs like "Kiss Me" and "There She Goes". Her solo career, which kicked off in 2006, has been similarly diverse. Her latest solo album 'The State I'm In.' shines a light on her Texas roots. It finds Nash putting a modern spin on the sounds she heard as a young girl in the Texas Hill Country, mixing together the classic country of Willie Nelson, the sweeping pop of Roy Orbison and the mariachi influences of nearby Mexico. TALL HEIGHTS harmony-heavy indie folk has taken this acoustic guitar and cello duo from the marketplaces of Massachusetts to stages across the country. Theyve toured America, released critically-acclaimed album, "Man of Stone", and earned a spot on the same folk family tree as Simon & Garfunkel and Bon Iver. On 2015s "Holding On, Holding Out", though, the duo widen their reach significantly, beefing up their sound with electronics, synthesizers, drums loops, Casio keyboards, and plenty of shimmer and shine. WoodSongs Kid: Angie Wilcutt is a 14 from Lexington, Kentucky. She performs an acoustic version of the pop hit “Bubbly on the WoodSongs Stage.
