In this episode of OPP, we dive into Deep Space Nine's Battle Lines, where the only thing more endless than the war is Kai Opaka's new lease on life. Join us as we unpack Kira's emotional gut punch, Sisko's failed attempt at peace talks, and a Gamma Quadrant groundhog day that goes spectacularly sideways. Is this episode a haunting meditation on the cost of violence? Or just a sci-fi version of a family reunion gone wrong? And seriously, does anyone really want to live forever if it means reliving the same grudge match day after day? We're breaking down the good, the bad, and the painfully repetitive in Battle Lines – the one where even death isn't a good enough excuse to call it quits. Hit play, buckle up, and prepare for eternal conflict… Starfleet style.

Doch bald schon ist das Kastensystem wieder da, Kira muss Kraniche kneten, Mönche drehen durch – und Kai Opaka erscheint dem Captain in seinen Albträumen. “Battle Lines” 30th-anniversary reflections A joy ride to the Gamma Quadrant turns deadly for Kai Opaka. At least until she springs back to life. Along with Sisko, Kira, and Bashir, the spiritual leader of Bajor finds herself marooned on some sort of prison colony where it is impossible to die and warring factions fight in an endless cycle of conflict. Die once on this moon and, well, you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave. But for Kai Opaka, that's okay, because she has found a new calling, a new charge from the Prophets. In this episode of The Orb, hosts C Bryan Jones and Matthew Rushing continue our 30th-anniversary retrospective that will take you through all of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, one episode at a time. In this installment, we discuss “Battle Lines,” how Opaka's new calling changes not only her life but also Kira's, why it was necessary to remove Opaka from her role on Bajor, what the story says about conflict, punishment, and redemption, and more. Kevin and Mike discuss Season 1, Episodes 1&2 of Star Trek: Prodigy, "Lost and Found, Parts 1 and 2," from the animation to the music to the writing and concept. And since Prodigy is designed to introduce newcomers--and especially kids--to Star Trek, they also talk about how they introduced their own kids to Star Trek, navigating the tricky spaces of age-appropriateness and taste. This leads to a conversation about how we introduce our kids to faith, both inside and outside church settings, curating important ideas for young hearts and minds. Rebinging Star Trek DS9: In the Hands of the Prophets Welcome to S1E19 In the Hands of the Prophets. In this episode of DS9, we meet Vedek Winn, also known as Evil Winn on this podcast. She's come to the station to push church into Keiko's school and shout "blasphemy" at anyone who will listen. She is not nice and she causes lots of chaos. In the Hands of the Prophets This is a dense episode and we have a lot to talk about (you won't believe how much we edited OUT of this long episode)! Yes, there is the big topic of the separation of church and state when Evil Winn turns up to accuse Keiko of blasphemy! There is also a murder mystery going on in the background as Miles searches for a lost security tool that has disappeared into a pile of goo that may or may not have been a Starfleet ensign that we've never heard of before. We meet Neela, a misguided zealot who also is a good engineer and Vedek Barile who casts a very dull shadow next to Louise Fletcher's frightening portrayal of Evil Winn. What's this rebinge thing? Rebinging Star Trek DS9: In the Hands of the Prophets Welcome to S1E19 In the Hands of the Prophets. In this episode of DS9, we meet Vedek Winn, also known as Evil Winn on this podcast. She’s come to the station to push church into Keiko’s school and shout “blasphemy” at anyone who will listen. She is not nice and she causes lots of chaos. In the Hands of the Prophets This is a dense episode and we have a lot to talk about (you won’t believe how much we edited OUT of this long episode)! Yes, there is the big topic of the separation of church and state when Evil Winn turns up to accuse Keiko of blasphemy! There is also a murder mystery going on in the background as Miles searches for a lost security tool that has disappeared into a pile of goo that may or may not have been a Starfleet ensign that we’ve never heard of before. We meet Neela, a misguided zealot who also is a good engineer and Vedek Barile who casts a very dull shadow next to Louise Fletcher’s frightening portrayal of Evil Winn. What’s this rebinge thing? It’s a re-watch of a thing you’ve already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Listen to our intro episode if you want to know a little more about us. And kick off the whole thing with our rebinge of the pilot episode Emissary. Or catch up on the previous episode: S1E18 Duet. Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Battle Lines Welcome to S1E12 where Kai Opaka arrives! The Kai guilts Sisko into taking her on a ride through the wormhole and no one is quite expecting what they find on the other side! Battle Lines! Spoiler alert, we really liked this episode and we dig deep into the development of Major Kira here. Please join us for this fun ride! Battle Lines Kai Opaka arrives at DS9 unannounced. She gets her promised tour of the station before getting a ride through the wormhole. She's muttering something about a prophecy, but nobody quite knows what she means (and for some reason, nobody asks!). When the shuttle is shot down by a satellite over a moon, our crew is introduced to some very unfriendly folks who are stuck in an endless and bloody war. This episode gives more depth to Kira and also shows us more of the elusive Kai Opaka. There is some beautiful acting here, but also some weak plot points (again)! We hope you enjoy this episode of the podcast as much as we enjoyed making it. Battle Lines is a good one! What's this rebinge thing? Welcome to our Rebinge of Star Trek DS9: Emissary This is our first full episode rebinge of Star Trek DS9! We are starting at the beginning, of course, with the DS9 pilot entitled Emissary! We're introduced to the space station Deep Space Nine and its main characters of Sisko, Jake, Miles, Dax, Kira, Odo and Quark. We also get a view of DS9 and Kim thinks it's a bit of a dump. We do spend quite a bit of time cleaning up the place after all! James is (naturally) quite in love with the whole thing from the very beginning. This episode of DS9 touches on some heavy stuff like grief and PTSD. And it nearly convinces us that time isn't linear. The show begins to build the foundation of Sisko as a character and gives us glimpses of him at his best and at his worst. We also get a look at the Cardassians and their burdensome costumes and we know pretty quickly we don't like them. We roll our sleeves up, just like Miles, for a very deep dive into this super-sized episode of the classic show. Get ready for Cardassians, an angry woman, wormholes and a lot of inappropriate ear touching. So. Much. Ear. Touching. Kim is truly outraged by this development. And oh yeah, James gets goose bumps when we find out who the Emissary is (a thing he already knew, but he is so giddy with excitement to relearn it). What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. Listen to our intro episode if you want to know a little more about us. Next time... For episode 12 I thought I would pick a movie that is on message with the world right now but also one that shows things could be much, much worse. This time around I’m looking at Eli Roth’s Cabin Fever. This was one of the most important movies for me in my early development as a filmmaker and if you weren’t a fan at the time, probably much better than you remember. DS9 brings Kai Opaka back to the show with episode 12, Battlegrounds, and I end with a book that I actually finished this week instead of weeks ago, Brandon Sanderson’s The Rithmatist. Kai Opaka. Religion held a rare position of importance within Star Trek during the seven seasons of Deep Space Nine, and right from the outset Benjamin Sisko was ushered into the world of Bajoran spirituality. Rather than the contentious atmosphere of Kai Winn, however, Sisko was introduced to his role of Emissary by the kinder, gentler hand of Kai Opaka. And while we never truly got to know her, the role that Opaka played in setting up the series is irreplaceable—at least for the DS9 that we came to know. In this episode of The Orb, Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing discuss Opaka, her background and her rise to the position of Kai, her "collaboration" with Cardassians during the final years of the Occupation, and we image a series both with Kai Opaka throughout and with her never existing.   Send us your feedback! The Sisko. Shortly after Benjamin Sisko arrived at Bajor, he was informed by Kai Opaka that he was the more than just a Starfleet Commander. Apart from being an ambassador of sorts whose mission was to prepare Bajor for Federation membership, Sisko was a long-awaited spiritual figure whose arrival was foretold in Bajoran prophecies. What played out over the next seven years was a story of incredible transformation of a kind never before seen in Star Trek.  In this episode of The Orb, hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing take a closer look at the man the Prophets came to refer to as The Sisko, how a Starfleet officer initially fought again his destiny, and how he came to accept that he had a very special purpose to fulfil that went beyond the uniform.
