George Takei is one of America's most beloved actors and activists, known best for playing Hikaru Sulu in the “Star Trek” franchise. In 2019, he released a graphic memoir, “They Called Us Enemy,” which detailed his childhood experience at internment camps during the Second World War. Now, he's released a follow-up book, “It Rhymes with Takei.” The new graphic memoir unpacks his experience living as a closeted gay man for most of his life. In this conversation with guest host Talia Schlanger, George opens up about fearing punishment for his differences, why he didn't come out until he was 68, and how his involvement with LGBTQ+ advocacy work has shaped who he is today.

Legendary Stage, Television and Film Actor, Activist, and Author, George Takei, is Set to Release his Graphic Memoir on June 10, 2025!A new full-color graphic memoir from the team behind George Takei's award-winning bestseller They Called Us Enemy, telling the untold story of George's journey from closeted actor to international gay icon. It Rhymes With Takei offers an unprecedented view into the heart of this beloved star and a celebration of the warp-speed changes he has witnessed in one lifetime.George Takei has shown the world many faces: actor, author, outspoken activist, helmsman of the starship Enterprise, living witness to the internment of Japanese Americans, and king of social media. But until October 27, 2005, there was always one piece missing-one face he did not show the world. There was one very intimate fact about George that he never shared - and it rhymes with Takei. Now, for the first time ever, George shares the full story of his life in the closet, his decision to come out as gay at the age of 68, and the way that moment transformed everything. Following the phenomenal success of his first graphic memoir, They Called Us Enemy, George Takei reunites with the team of Harmony Becker, Steven Scott, and Justin Eisinger for a jaw-dropping new testament. From his earliest childhood crushes and youthful experiments in the rigidly conformist 1950s, to global fame as an actor and the terrible fear of exposure, to the watershed moment of speaking his truth and becoming one of the most high-profile gay men on the planet, It Rhymes with Takei offers a sweeping portrait of one iconic American navigating the tides of LGBTQ+ history.Combining historical context with intimate subjectivity, It Rhymes with Takei shows how the personal and the political have always been intertwined. Its richly emotional words and images depict the terror of entrapment even in gay community spaces, the anguish of speaking up for so many issues while remaining silent on his most personal issue, the grief of losing friends to AIDS, the joy of finding true love with Brad Altman, and the determination to declare that love openly-and legally-before the whole world.Looking back on his astonishing life on both sides of the closet door, George Takei presents a charismatic and candid account of how far America has come.and how precious that progress is.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Two hundred and ninety-nine episodes ago, we could not have possibly imagined George Takei appearing on the podcast. Some version of the actor has hung in our imaginations for most of our lives, and we spent many days of our early marriage obsessing over Star Trek, the original series, and its subsequent films. Thankfully, through this beautiful medium called comic books, our paths have crossed, and we get to celebrate our three-hundredth episode with one of our creative and cultural heroes. Takei's latest graphic novel, It Rhymes With Takei, reunites him with the same creative team behind They Called Us Enemy: artist Harmony Becker and writers Steven Scott and Justin Eisinger. Together, they tell the rest of Takei's story, which includes his time in the Japanese American internment camps during World War II. It Rhymes With Takei explores the many lessons George Takei learned from that experience, how it shaped his activism, and gave him the courage to battle through the numerous other injustices he would face and fight for and alongside others. The word "dystopia" gets thrown around a lot these days. It's certainly a go-to for us, and when you look outside your window or scroll through your phone, it's an easy, seemingly apt descriptor. Star Trek has started to feel like fantasy, not science fiction. However, George Takei encourages us to hang onto utopian possibilities. He asks us to accept the inevitability of change but strive toward a brighter, better future. As the news continuously fills us with dread, we needed this conversation with George Takei, and we're grateful to share it with you, beautiful comic book friends. Thank you for spending your time with us over these three hundred (or so) episodes. Your presence gets us to our recording table every week, and you've given new meaning to our lives. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Mitch Guttman from California Institute of Technology about his work on characterising the 3D interactions of the genome using Split-Pool Recognition of Interactions by Tag Extension (SPRITE). Mitch Guttman discusses his exploration of the long non-coding RNA Xist, which plays a crucial role in X chromosome inactivation. He explains how they discovered that Xist is present everywhere in the nucleus, not just in specific locations on the X chromosome. Through their research, they identified critical proteins like SHARP that are involved in X chromosome silencing. The discussion then shifts to SPRITE, a method they developed to map multi-way contacts and generalize beyond DNA to include RNA and proteins. They compare SPRITE to classical proximity ligation methods like Hi-C and discuss how cluster sizes in SPRITE can estimate 3D distances between molecules. The conversation also touches upon the potential of applying SPRITE to single-cell experiments, allowing for the mapping of higher order nucleic acid interactions and tracking the connectivity of DNA fragments in individual cells.   References Jesse M. The story of the great George Takei goes beyond his career of Star Trek, into his early beginnings growing up in America during the 1940s. They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, Justin Eisinger, Steven R. Scott with art by Harmony Becker tells the real life experiences Takei lived through during WWII when Japanese Americans were forced into internment camps in the United States during the aftermath of Pearl Harbor until the war was over. With the help of Takei's mother and father, George and his family were able to persevere through this era of traumatic uncertainly that forever changed the lives of thousands of Japanese Americans during one of the harshest times in world history. This part of history is tragically important as to not repeat itself, but to learn the valuable lessons shared in this journey of courage and bravery. This Eisner Award winning graphic novel for Best Reality-Based Work produced by Top Shelf Productions is highly recommended for readers who like nonfiction autobiographic memoirs as well as readers who want to learn about one of the most iconic pop culture leaders to take action outside of the television screen.

George Takei born Hosato Takei April 20, 1937) is an American actor, author and activist known for his role as Hikaru Sulu, helmsman of the fictional starship USS Enterprise in the television series Star Trek and subsequent films.[1][2]Takei was born to Japanese American parents, with whom he lived in U.S.-run internment camps during World War II. He began pursuing acting in college, which led in 1965 to the role of Sulu, to which he returned periodically into the 1990s. Upon coming out as gay in 2005, he became a prominent proponent of LGBT rights and active in state and local politics. He has been a vocal advocate of the rights of immigrants, in part through his work on the 2012 Broadway show Allegiance, about the internment experience.[3][4]Although Takei was born and raised in California, he spoke both English and Japanese growing up and remains fluent in both languages.[5][6] He has won several awards and accolades for his work on human rights and Japan–United States relations, including his work with the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, California.Tom Hanks tells Variety magazine that he has no plans to retire. "No, I don't have any desire [to retire]. I'm not working for the sake of working. I'm in a very lucky position. It's got to be fabulous. Rita and I talk about it all the time, which is there's only two reasons go to work: It'll be good or it'll be fun. And if it's neither one of those, I'll stay home until the cows come on. I don't need to do anything.” Giant Freakin Robot says Tom Hanks is allegedly in talks to play a villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The website says he could play Doctor Doom or a villain in the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. He could also play Mr Sinister in an upcoming X-Men movie. I said, ‘Well, no, I'm not.' He said, ‘Are you sitting? O.J. Simpson for the Terminator!' I said, ‘I actually think that's a bad idea.' It didn't go anywhere.”Hugh Jackman tells People magazine that he is going to spend the next six months training to play Wolverine in ''Deadpool 3.'' “So, we have six months from when I finish The Music Man to when I started filming. And I'm not doing any other work. I'm going to be with my family and train. That's going to be my job for six months. I'm really fit right now. There's one thing that about eight shows a week being on Broadway singing and dancing, is I'm fit. So, I'm healthy. I have a good place to start. And apologies, chickens. Run a mile. Start running now because I'm coming for you.”Hugh tells HBO that he is not taking steroids to bulk up to play Wolverine. “No, I love my job. And I love Wolverine. I have been told anecdotally what the side effects are of that. And I was like, ‘I don't love it that much.' So no, I just did it the old school way.

Full Disclosure with James O'Brien

The internment of Japanese Americans across the U.S. during World War II is not an obvious subject on which to develop a musical, however it is exactly what George Takei, Star Trek legend and social media icon has done. Now in his mid-eighties, Takei brings a show inspired by events from his own childhood to London's Charing Cross Theatre. Tickets for ‘George Takei's Allegiance' are available now until Saturday 8 April.

Actor George Takei's Firsthand Account of His Childhood in an Internment Camp for Japanese Americans (0:32)Guest: George Takei, Actor/Activist/Author of “They Called Us Enemy” George Takei shot to fame aboard the Starship Enterprise – even taking the captain's chair on occasion. Before Takei was Star Trek's Sulu, he was a child, imprisoned with his family because of their Japanese heritage. By the time Takei left the World War II internment camps, he was 9 years old and had spent nearly half his life behind barbed-wire. Takei's story was the basis of a hit Broadway musical in which he co-starred with Lea Salonga called Allegiance. Now Takei has written a memoir about his childhood in the “relocation camps.” It's a graphic novel titled “They Called Us Enemy.” (Originally aired 7/16/19) How Emojis Are Impacting the Law (20:23)Guest: Eric Goldman Is a Professor of Law at Santa Clara University School of Law, Co-Director, High Tech Law InstituteNow that we're all using emojis as a regular part of communication, they're starting to pop up lawsuits. A judge or jury might have to decide if somebody's thumbs-up emoji at the end of a text exchange was a firm commitment or just a way to end the conversation. If you give a thumbs up emoji is that the same as signing your name to a document? (Originally aired 11/4/2019) Proprioception: Our Sixth Sense (32:31)Guest: Alexander Chesler, Principal Investigator at the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, NIHTry this: Close your eyes and touch your finger to your nose. Pretty easy, right? You just engaged your sixth sense. It's called proprioception and it's what makes it possible for professional ice skaters to do triple axels, helps basketball players dunk a ball, and helps us all maintain that six-foot distance between each other right now. Surprisingly, researchers have only recently started to understand how it works. The game is a mix between rugby, croquet, soccer, and ultimate frisbee. The sport's motto? "Face the ball to be the ball to be above the ball" - definitely sounds like something written by a computer. (Originally aired 9/9/19) Fashion That Is Always Digital, Never Physical (1:09:21)Guest: Kerry Murphy, Founder and CEO of the FabricantWith so many people working from home, there's debate about what kind of attire is appropriate for video conference meetings. There's a Dutch digital design firm called The Fabricant that practically anticipated this conundrum months ago. They're developing clothes that exist only in the digital world. You'll one day be able to buy a custom suit or designer gown. It's just a digital file, so you can't wear it in real life. Wells.  Poet Sylvia Plath. “Jane Eyre” author Charlotte Bronte. Plus, lots of names you wouldn't recognize but should. (Originally aired 11/6/2019)
