Do you ever believe you are your thoughts? Do you often take your thoughts way too seriously?  If so you'll enjoy today's podcast episode as my guest, Keagen Hadley author of Torn: Overcoming the Psychological Challenges Post-ACL Injury talks about using Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) as a potentially helpful solution.  Specifically we discuss cognitive defusion as a way to help you create distance from your thoughts. Key Learning Points: Cognitive Fusion is concerned with the mess our thoughts in relation to our identity can have where our thoughts can often dominate our reality. Examples include; “I am broken”, “I am rubbish…” Mastering cognitive defusion can help you create distance from your thoughts and see things from a fresh perspective. Cognitive defusion goes on to promote psychological flexibility and empowers you to relate to your situation and thought processes with greater openness and adaptability.  One approach you could take to help you is to smile at yourself and your situation as it can help you make peace and shift your perspective. When you perform and see red mist, slowing down, taking a slow walk can also be a useful way to take the sting out of the situation.  Connect with Keagan Hadley LinkedIn Website BOOK: Torn Overcoming Psychological Challenges Post ACL Connect with David Charlton Sign Up to The Mental Edge Join David @ The Sports Psychology Hub Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn To Listen to the Full Podcast Episodes Ep092: Dr James Hegarty – ACT in Sport, Improving Performance through Mindfulness Ep124: Dr Keagan Hadley – Long Term Injuries: How to Confront Difficult Thoughts and Emotions Ep205: Dr Carl Bescoby – Rehabilitation And Returning To Sport: How To Support Injured Athletes Ep235: Trevor Jones - How To Use ACT To Improve Your Coaching In Sport #BITESIZE Ep236: Dr James Hegarty - How To Use ACT and Mindfulness When You've Got Lots Of Time To Think #BITESIZE

Keagen Hadley is a doctor of Occupational Therapy and psychiatric clinical researcher specializing in acceptance and commitment therapy and the holistic care of joint injuries. Keagen notes that his role is to bridge the gap between the physical and psychological, as most people only focus on one or the other. He follows a path that's similar to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). His is Acceptance And Commitment Therapy, the basics of which are to use your experience as basis for learning and then committing to changing what's not working. Six pillars to consider: • Diffusion - separating your thoughts from your self, as a person • Acceptance - the understanding that life has ups and downs and you'll get to experience them. • How you choose to interpret them matters. • Mindfulness - a reminder that living in the moment, every moment, matters • Using your Self as a context = looking at what mask you choose to wear for a public role vs. the true you that you are • Taking Purposeful Action - Life is grand and plans are good, but you have to move from where you are to make anything happen • Values - Goals need to be tied to values. This last one is particularly important to me. In my Exponential Success Summit, we dive into the need for getting super clear about your Values first, then being able to set your goals from there. Tips for mindfulness: No one on One Sharp Sword is prescribing activity or remedy. If you need assistance consult a medical/psychological professional. Keagen discussed a methodology called progressive overload wherein you give your body something it's not used to for a short duration of time, then come back and incrementally increase the exposure, whether that's an ice bath or lifting weights at a certain level. He suggests paying attention to your thoughts as you increase the time you give yourself to engage in the activity. This experience made him acutely aware of the struggles associated with ACL injuries and the various issues that can arise psychologically due to this condition. Now I actually sit with them and focus on them. Mindfulness almost minimizes them. It is the same thing I do if I feel a panic attack or heavy anxiety coming on. I found it [mindfulness] almost minimizes the strength or the power that my emotions or anxiety have over me. Dealing differently with my emotions has helped me with the psychological impacts of sports Injury. Thoughts on Breathing One practice that I got into as I was getting out of those difficult situations is my therapist had me take a cold shower. It's not for the reasons you might think; there's a plethora of benefits of cold showers, but actually it's very uncomfortable. But you still have to be able to practice your breathing during that experience. [Cold showers create a situation where you begin deep breathing]. I found it was [deep breathing] a very good way to prepare myself pre-game. Some people get rather anxious prior to games. Personally, I'm a very superstitious person. So before my first start I actually threw up. So then every subsequent start I had to throw up. So a lot of athletes are very much like that. So I would say that gets you in the same type of hostile environment to where you still have to really focus on your breathing, even though it's extremely uncomfortable. Suggested Resources Book: Rebound: Train Your Mind To Bounce Back Stronger From Sports Injuries by Carrie Jackson Cheadle and Cindy Kuzma Book: Torn: Overcoming the Psychological Challenges Post-ACL Injury by Keagen Hadley App: Write Daily – I tend to focus on writing for my mindfulness, actually. So I use Write Early for its daily prompts. Bullying Story There are lots of forms of bullying. I work with a very specific kind of torment, whether you want to call it bullying or not. So these injuries, whether it be an Achilles tear, a Tommy John injury or an overhead throwing injury, or ACL injuries, as I said, they're very long recovery periods. (Note: Tommy Johns Surgery is typically used for UCL tears that happened due to overuse rather than a single traumatic event) And for most of that recovery period, they look fine. They're not walking around with a cast. It's internal healing. It's surprisingly easy to define ourselves by what we do. Most of us do! Not only is this not healthy, it sets us up for some major confusion when our job changes. This may at first seem trivial, but I've worked with many clients who have what is called an "identity wound." Common ones include "I'm broken," "I'm not enough," and "I'm not really a man." Often, we cling to our job as a replacement for this deeper identity problem. This doesn't work. Join me in this episode as Dr. Keagen Hadley explores his own broken identity. It doesn't seem like a torn ACL would be an event needing psychological intervention, but when it destroyed his ability to be who he thought he was, things became dark. Using a new type of ACT therapy, he fought back and earned his freedom. You can read more about Keagen at his website: https://keagenhadley.com/

Today's podcast episode looks at long-term serious injuries, the psychological impact and helpful strategies to help you manage your mental health during the rehabilitation process and afterwards.  My guest, doctor of occupational therapy, Keagen Hadley has recently released a book called Torn: Overcoming the Psychological Challenges Post-ACL Injury which we go on to discuss too.   Keagan shares his backstory, the motivation behind writing his book, his definition of mental toughness when faced with a long term serious injury, like an ACL.  We also chat about Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) as a potentially helpful solution and much more.  Key Learning Points: Keagan didn't intend to write a book initially however he found it became a cathartic process helping him process his thoughts and emotions. He personally had two long term ACL injuries which occurred whilst playing American Football, as well as experiencing battles with depression and anxiety. Being part of the group was difficult for Keagan when he was injured. His identity of who he was shifted hugely. Mental toughness in this context is about learning to face and sit with difficult thoughts and emotions. Seeking support and discussing your problems is important to process the emotions. Acceptance Commitment Therapy helped Keagan greatly during the difficult times and is something he advocates in his work with athletes too. I speak to Dr Keagen Hadley in this week's episode. Keagen is an occupational therapy doctor who specialises in using psychological treatments such as ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) to improve the lives of his patients. Keagen is about to release his first book entitled "Torn: Overcoming the Psychological Challenges Post-ACL Injury" (out in June). The book has been written for people who may be struggling with psychological issues related to ACL injuries, though the practical tips on managing stress and overcoming the mental hurdles of injury recovery would be beneficial for those recovering from all types of injury. Keagen drew on his own personal experiences to write the book, having torn both ACLs playing college and semi-professional football (NFL). This experience made him acutely aware of the struggles associated psychologically post-ACL injury and how to overcome them with positive results.
