From the c-suite to executive leadership coach and author, Emily Sander was a pleasure to have join me on One Sharp Sword. Superman is Emily's favorite Superhero. As with Clark Kent, Emily is adopted. She also uses - and encourages others to use - the superpowers for good and to never give up. She enjoyed business and leadership and especially loves 1:1 interactions where small points of leverage make a huge difference. Emily notes that the #1 skill someone can have is communication. And, with that skill comes the adaptability about both listening and conveying information to the person or people in front of you, each of whom likely have a different style from you. Huge leadership tidbit, here! She notes that many execs (I'd say almost all) hit a point of questioning what it's all for. We discussed the existential dilemma which brought us down a great rabbit hole worth exploring! Skill for self: Be deliberate and avoid distractions. Emily provides us with food for thought noting that we need to question whether in putting things off for someday or “one day,” is it one day or day one? Again, be deliberate! GREAT conversation with Alain today. From the culture he grew up with to how he guides leaders today, you'll get a lot out of listening. His three Cs are key to leadership, whether at home or in your organization: Connection Communication Collaboration And he spoke of Consistency, which I'd call a 4th C in his model. Alain's book Cracking the Leadership Code is worth picking up! We connect as human beings. Our world demands people who can think and co-create within an organization. Leaders must find a way to convey that each employee feels valued and cared for. That's how you get real connection. Communication is about creating shared, mutual understanding. If you assume that the default is that what is being communicated will be misunderstood, what will you need to do to ensure true understanding? Collaboration means creating the culture together by asking the question of what gets the BEST out of people. In the interview, we discussed the graying of the workforce, mentorship, and remote work. Super interesting! Consistency counts and so does actively seeking feedback (so that you can get better). Think about this, too. It's called the Fundamental Attribution Error: We justify our actions based on our intentions. Others judge us based on the outcomes and results. A performance coach coming from the corporate sector who, after reflecting on what he wished he had been taught, Aaron Trahan set out on his path as a coach. He now helps others in leadership roles. He notes that complacency must be met head on. Current success could block your future success if you allow yourself to get too comfortable. While it's easy to get comfortable, he also knows that no one says that they don't want to get better results. The remedy: Get a bit uncomfortable. That discomfort is you stepping out of your comfort zone. The biggest thing that stops people - they think they have to be ready or that they have to do things perfectly. Forget perfect. Start. Take imperfect. Aaron's five-level methodology demands strength at each level: Mindset - you need to believe that more is actually possible for you Awareness - Clarity - Vision, Milestones, Goals Accountability Take action. Test your “why.” Filter what is IN and what is a distraction. Focus and Attention correlates with Speed and Progress Check out more at www.PerformanceMindsetCoaching.co
What does a musician and conductor know about leadership? My guest, Hugh Ballou, sees his work at conducting transformations. He defines what leadership is and isn't and what components go into great leadership. His company, SynerVision is a crossover between synergy and vision. Here are some key points. Listen in for more! Leadership isn't dictatorship - the leader is an influencer! In an orchestra, the leader knows the score and everyone playing knows their part Infrastructure is everything, what you're playing is almost secondary It all comes together - through practice, performance, clarity, and community BIG LEADERSHIP LESSON: Rather than tell people what to do, state your expectation and your availability to mentor. THIS IS A PARENTING TIP, TOO. (Just be sure you're walking the talk and not asking others to do as you say, not as you do.) THE CULTURE IS A REFLECTION of the leader! Rehearse Excellence Four foundational leadership principles: Vision = The Score Be ready to articulate the vision Relationships and Building a Team Hire The Best Systems - create systems that help your team do their jobs That includes the way you run meetings (bad meetings kill productivity) Value the Rests You can't drive and push all the time. Can you get excited about conflict? There's an old movie from 1950 that caught my attention. It predates me, but still enchanted me. The play-turned-movie is Harvey. The main character, Elmer P. Dowd, finds people in an uproar talking about what he believes in. Elmer's response, “Oh an element of conflict in any discussion is a very good thing. It shows everybody is taking part and nobody is left out. I like that.” Hesha Abrams is an attorney-turned-mediator, something she's done for the past three decades. Her wisdom is epic and has lessons we can all learn from. Conflict resolution has shortcuts. Mediation is about talking to work out deals. The idea of “win-win” doesn't work because there's all too often someone's ego involved. There's either fear or a desire to dominate. That never makes for an equitable win-win. Logic, reason, and rationale do not solve problems. Key points from this episode with Hesha Abrams: Problems are solved at an emotional level. Even economic decisions are managed emotionally People might not be playing to win, but they ARE playing not to lose. (Note: think about that for your own life) Some people want to be right; most people do not want to be wrong. (The embarrassment might imply being outcast and ultimately alone.) Look for/listen for the power dynamic in any interaction Language matters - Request permission Ask if the other person would “like” what you're offering “May I share a story with you? Would you like it if I shared….” Look for where it becomes okay to make a deal Interrupt strategically: “Do you know what I like/respect/admire about you?” Name the emotion Validate Turn on the give-a-darn meter Empower by taking responsibility. Apologize. Request a “do-over.” This gives the other person the power to say yes and allows you to model a culture that you value. Having grown up in PA, Dr. Kevin Gazzara had a propensity for taking things apart and putting them back together, it was a natural curiosity that drove him. He found himself organizing events for his friends. And what do you get when you have a curious kid who likes to organize? A focus on business and engineering. After decades with Intel and other organizations, Kevin took to entrepreneurship. He became an executive coach, putting his experience to great use. His focus: productivity and building teams. He believes in action learning, engaging those he teaches to have immediate, practical impact. He looks at six key areas: Behavioral styles Communication and conflict Values and guiding people to their natural place of Flow Critical Thinking (so absent and so important these days) Leadership Styles Motivation & Engagement - here, he notes that you cannot motivate someone else. You can create the circumstances or environment that helps them to feel motivated. Pain Points in most organizations include: Retention (and Kevin notes that this starts with hiring correctly) Motivation (and here, Kevin suggests asking a couple of questions so that rewards are unique to the individual - I'd add that this crosses over to family, as well) What three things might you like as recognition (surprise, when you really dig, you'll find it's not money as #1) How do you like that delivered, publicly or privately? And a caution NOT to overuse recognition. Leadership and management lessons can cross over to parenting if you think about it. I like to build that bridge. We want to build upon values and create autonomy by building mastery and purpose. Along the way, there's accountability. The lessons here are great for everyone, from leaders to family members! What's the ONLY thing you need to know about my guest this episode? Roy Osing is the ONLY author, entrepreneur, and executive leader who delivers practical and proven “audacious and unheard-of ways” to produce high-performing businesses and successful careers. His focus is on helping build what he calls The ONLY Statement, identifying what makes each individual or business stand out above everyone else. The key here is that if you claim to be The Only one doing something, you've basically owned that field. His brand (website, book, etc.) is www.BeDifferentOrBeDead.com focuses on differentiation. Roy notes that you have to learn to satisfy clothes in a way that matters to them. Figure out what you need to do “in a superlative way.” In terms of the norm, common, average, or herd-mentality way, you can either comply with or confront that flow. Roy and I agree that it's exceptionally important for business leaders and, truly any of us as individuals, to find that natural expression of self. While he doesn't call it this, what his approach gets back to is First Principles: that is, if we look at the current situation and started over with our thinking, not knowing what we know about what society expects of us, how would we approach this for the best possible outcome? How can we do this (whatever “this” is) differently? I created a bridge in our discussion, noting that this question lands as exceptionally important both in business and in your personal relationships, as well. This is what Roy calls the “Be Different lens.” As you look at being different, it's important to recognize you can niche way down and still have a great business. Roy invites you, the listener, to decide who you're going to serve (aka, the Target Market). And again, building a bridge from the business world to your home life, that could be a family member (partner, parent, child, etc.). Then determine what they CRAVE, not what they need. You can, of course take care of the basic needs. And once done, “you've earned the right to dazzle.” THE ONLY Statement and Strategic Game Planning Process is done relatively quickly. How big do you want to be in 24-months (24 thirty-day periods)? Where do you make your money? That is, who will you serve and what do they crave? Remember, you need to stop thinking about the product or service you offer and focus on what your market needs and craves. Create The Only statement to compete and win in your customer groups. I often have guests with a similar focus to mine as a way to look at differing approaches. Noah St. John has a great message and has managed to distill it into multiple columns, maximizing how that message gets out. He's a best selling author, a speaker, and an executive coach. And, his results are undeniable. He went from living literally dirt-poor while growing up to becoming a multi-millionaire by helping others become successful. He bounced from a suicide attempt to finding his purpose. He's a writer and a synthesizer of information. He looks for the missing pieces of information that's out there and offers those in frameworks that anyone can learn from. His offerings include Power Habits (a book and online course) focusing on the subconscious habits of successful people. One habit he shared with the audience is Asking Empowering Questions (something I discussed in my blog about a year ago, so super important to dive into). There's a difference between affirmations and asking positive/empowering questions of your subconscious. He offers his Seven Figure Expert book for free (just pay his shipping charges) at www.SevenFigureExpertBook.com Here, he discusses the inner game and the outer game for selling your guidance as a service. From an entry level position at Enterprise Rental Car spanning over two and a half decades when he left the company as the Regional Vice President, Eric Stone learned a thing or two about CULTURE. Through engagement and other key steps, you create Culture Carriers. Look at: Time Management and Eisenhower's grid demarcations of Delegate, Do, Defer, or Delete Hiring Practices to include focusing on attitude, effort, and coachability Hold regular meetings to highlight desired outcomes, then back fill the calendar with times for training and review. Remember that beliefs lead to behaviors. Identify your priorities and keep them in front of your team members. Remember that 40% of your team don't actually know what's expected of them. In exploring corporate culture, investigate the gap between Values and Behavior. Whether working in-office, remotely, or hybrid, there are five factors of engagement that need to be focused on: Relationship with the manager Understanding of requirements Having and utilizing the proper tools and tech Personal and Professional Development Reward systems Because there's no pressure relief for those working remotely (and hybrid/remote), the stress and anger felt on one day could well carry over to the next day. Marco Torres grew up in the Caribbean as his father ran GE Credit Corp from Puerto Rico. He learned about adventure and entrepreneurship. At 12 y/o he was featured in the news for having the largest paper route in the area. 11 years later, with his brother and mother, he opened a series of restaurants. And a couple years after that opened a nightclub. His realization: he wanted to employ others more than be employed by others. While formal schooling was never his thing, as an entrepreneur, continuous learning is a necessity! He notes, “be a student first!” So what makes Marco different and what is this Marketing Boost thing? At the risk of part of this episode sounding like a fascinating infomercial, Marco's business is helping people add value to their offers. His company essentially offers travel perks that others (like you and I) can subscribe to in order to give ourselves, our family members, our clients, and our prospects the gift of free hotel stays (or restaurant outings). Imagine this, “When you buy my xyz, you'll also get three nights' accommodation (less travel and taxes) at this ____ amazing hotel.” There's something to that and it got me thinking. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed talking with Marco Torres. To learn more about him, go to www.MarketingBoostSolutions.com for a link to a free (limited) trial of his services. (I'm not affiliated with Marco Torres or his Marketing Boost program in any way, so I receive no compensation or any other perks. I only recommend him because the program sounds interesting. So an MD with ADHD walks into… actually, what happens is that the gentleman creates so much presence that time flies and people feel connected. How? Breathing into presence, breathing out ego. Dr Iyer is based in Virginia (via India). He's writing a new book about neurodiversity, autism, and sensory processing disorders which he refers to as types of personality, not disorders. He also wrote a book called The Reaper's Dance about how we found our humanity in the midst of the COVID pandemic, coming face-to-face with our own mortality. He calls that time “a phenomenal global experiment.” Influenced by Brunton's Search In Secret books, Ravi found comfort in some to the breathing exercises that helped quiet his mind AND open him to non-judgmental experience. He found his path to NOW. That is, staying in The Now. Consciousness consists of our ability to perceive experience and our ability to create a narrative about the experience. True personal power comes from choosing which narrative to pay attention to. Grounding comes from watching The Tide Of Your Breath - take note of the deepest place in your chest for the inhale and note about where your breath extends in the exhale. Practice that and see how your focus sharpens. The ability to get grounded is foundational to success. Find Dr. Ravi Iyer, his book(s), and other resources at https://www.DrIyer.com
Eric Holsapple is an expert on mindful leadership. He shares his wisdom with us noting the importance of presence, especially as a leader. And that's why I invited him to One Sharp Sword. It's important work. When you can be mindful and truly present, especially in our distraction-based world, you make a difference in the people around you, your organization, and potentially the world. Eric invites us to reflect internally and think about the vision we have of ourselves and for our future. He notes that to create a different future, we might need a different self-concept and that is created through habits. Key points: • Mindfulness is focus. If I'm judging, I'm not focused; I've already made a decision. • Don't just let your body carry your head to a meeting. Integrate. • Mindfulness becomes a culture (a way of being) AND a strategy. • You're not your job, you have a job. • Self-esteem can come from humility, not from positional power. • Intention moves things. • Profit is the result of purpose. Be present and practice mindfulness… Seriously, practice. Take just two minutes to allow yourself to focus on something, anything, and not let distractions intrude. Find Eric Holsapple on LinkedIn. Look for his program: 12 Pillars of Mindful Leadership and pick up his book: Profit with Presence More info about Eric and his programs can be found at https://LivingInTheGap.org And please like, rate, and share this episode! Ahhhhh Geek Out (he says he's more of a nerd than a geek, so…) Process Mapping is a thing! It's the efficient, distilled, visual representation of data, the structured capture of process data. And while that doesn't sound like a riveting thing to talk about, I assure you, this episode was filled with nuggets you can use in your business and personal life. Key points to listen for: • Have a foundational start point • Communicate - and look for the multiple ways that things are communicated in each of your systems (at work, in multiple communities, and at home) • Visual representations of processes give consciousness to businesses • ChatGPT compiles data to answer questions while Sam's company www.Truvle.com, structures the process data it compiles Find Sam Druschak on LinkedIn or at www.Truvle.com

He notes that dissatisfied customers are a gift. This prompted a conversation about curiosity and the need to be open enough to ask for further feedback. How does someone with social anxiety and body image issues do the work to become an entrepreneur with a business doing $2M in revenue? It's quite a story, but the transformation happened pretty quickly! And yours can too. Having a degree in engineering, she managed to find a job in an adjacent line of work - purchasing and procurement. When it came time to get into sales on her own, she had a horrible fear of rejection. (Don't we all?) In this episode, Amanda reveals her path to success and gives us some GREAT lessons along the way. It's about building the lifestyle you want. • Leverage new knowledge! Once you learn a thing, you can't unlearn it. How do you stack a new skill onto that? • Confidence stack, as well. You've done this before! Do it s'more! • Focus on forward looking and forward action. Don't let yourself think that you can't do something. What can you do? • Be like a child, enjoy curiosity, engage in ignorance on fire! • Winning isn't about competition. Beware of a fear of losing that sets the stage for a self loathing. Don't give into a need to win for validation. • Pain is about life lessons. Build on them. • Do the thing! Keep forward action. Amanda is doing group coaching and some private coaching for coaches. Beate Chelette (pronounced Bay-ah-tay shal-Let) immigrated here from Munich, Germany. Having held a senior and highly coveted position at Elle magazine, she realized that she had gone down the path of becoming who she really didn't want to be. She's an expert at helping people through the simple-but-not-so-easy process of growing a business. What outcomes do you want for them. ○ Create the blueprint from there ○ Build out the foundation of your plan ○ Determine the “who,” what people you'll want/need on your team ○ List out the other resources you'll need • What's your idea? From physics to computer programming to paying attention to how money flows and how to maintain production and quality. That landed him a position at Google forecasting and handling economic and revenue questions. For some that's exciting and challenging. For others, boring as heck. Eric pushed himself to be the best, to take on more and more. And his reward was to be given more, and more, and more. In the corporate world, it's not unusual to be punished for doing a good job by being given more on top of the job you had. And that leads to burnout. If you keep your perspective, burnout leads to choices! When working harder isn't working, you have to wonder how you're the problem. Challenge the rules Experiment Overcome blocks (through awareness of them) Aspire That's push against what isn't working and pull toward what you really want. What can a 19 year old “kid” teach us about living life? Plenty! It turns out that in the last 12 years, Logan has done more in his life than many of us ever even think about. He's a motocross champ who not only knows his way around the track, he can teach us a thing or two about endurance and mindset. Coming from a racing family, he felt comfortable on a motocross bike from day one. Competitive by nature (apparently his little brother helps with that), Logan finds individual sports more fulfilling than team sports. He points to the mental aspect of it all, “I look to be the best” and notes that he does become one with the bike when racing. With a heart rate topping 180 beats per minute while on the track, there'd better be the mindset of letting mistakes go, controlling your emotions and your reactions. Getting in flow means you're not thinking, you've just let it all go. At 16 years old he started a marketing agency, then engaged in world travels, particularly to South Africa where he met up with his business partner in person. Chris Miller had what he calls the Harvard Complex, suit and tie job. And, like so many of us that pursue a path for the sake of stability and “supposed to” - we move beyond the ego-based, “look at me; I landed a big-boy job.” And once there, we must question, what's it all for? That's where Chris and I connected on this podcast. I'll likely do a blog about the idea of leaving your partner at home while you're out on required business travel making the absurd claim, “I love you so much I'm not at home. I'm doing this all for you.” Chris gave up his corporate job to become a writer, podcaster, and producer. During our time together, we connected around VALUES. Chris notes, “there has to be a well” to dip from, your values and beliefs are the key. We diverted into talking about the loneliness crisis and referred to the definition of loneliness as the perceived feeling of lacking a needed social connection. That is, you could be in a room full of people and feel lonely. Or you could be by yourself and feel fully content. It's about perception of the need. Presence and attention were discussed as essential for building any relationship. And we then uncovered that “community” can be the connection with just one other person. Think about the relationships you have, how you co-construct conversations in them, and how doing so with real attention gives you the much needed community. What can an attorney tell us about peace-making? A lot! His big claim: In 90 seconds he can extinguish any argument (and teach you to do the same). What is leadership level listening? • Type One Listening is to get information that you can use and then close out the conversation • Type Two Listening is about validating the other person, making the other person feel heard. When you're flooded with emotions, yours or someone else's, try Affective Labeling. A leader's job is to provide Focus, Direction, and Safety. We can only identify others' emotions if we're calm. R-E-S-P-E-C-T (sing it) Dr Julie Pham brings us her story from joining her refugee parents at 2 months old to earning her PhD at Cambridge. She's been in operations and has found that relationship building is a positive path to success. In this podcast, Dr Julie and I speak about resilience and how to thrive, being creative and resourceful, and using hope and optimism. We also discuss The Seven Forms of Respect Each of us has a preferred style where/how we desire and demonstrate respect. Curiosity is about learning and being respectful of the other person. In any organization, you can ask, “Do you think you can learn from other people here?” If yes, great! What can you learn? If no, help them move on! Curiosity is a practice! It's about self awareness. Relationship Building is about reciprocity and respect. And Clear Communication is always important. Be aware of power balances. The “Rubber Band Rule” says be flexible and know your personal boundaries (aka breaking points). Look at these seven areas for respect: • Procedure • Punctuality • Information • Candor • Consideration • Acknowledgment • Attention Find Julie Pham PhD on LinkedIn And look for free assessments on her website www.CuriosityBased.com
Chad Hufford is in the financial world now. He was picked on as a kid, used adversity to drive him, went on a pre-med path in taking up biochemistry, became an athletic coach, and let all of that background simmer together to help people make changes and stay on a path toward financial success. He's in Anchorage, Alaska, and that's not a typical kind of culture that any of us would be used to. He's learned a lot in being there and brings his insights. Some of the key points made in this program include (and listen in for them all): • Optimism isn't ignoring reality, nor is it a stepwise process. • Have a goal and a destination (and note that the goals can be fluid) • Have a willingness to learn • What are you doing (input) to get the outcomes (output) you actually want? • Consistency is key! • Depersonalize rejection - it's not about YOU. • Sustainability over Optimization! • Think about the process, we don't tend to scale back, but we quit. Don't quit! • Not starting is the other place where people simply fail before they give themselves a chance • Leverage your resources - most people don't know what resources the already have • Redefine failure - perfect is the enemy of done • Automate good habits • Chad talks about Sacrifice - I say, “Let go of the things that no longer serve you.” • What is your risk tolerance? There's no such thing as No Risk. • Volatility is temporary ambiguity. Stable isn't about safety. • Comfort is the antithesis of success. Braith Bamkin is an expert at making connections. On today's episode we discuss Intention, Purpose, and Connection. He highlights a couple of key questions for growing your business: Who do you want to do business with, and why? We talked about so much on this quick hour, some of the key take-aways were: • Care enough to help others first ○ Doing so engages the law of reciprocity (but don't do something in order to get back - that just means you're coming from a place of taking, not giving) • If you want to feel better about yourself, do something nice for someone else. • Being “busy” shuts down opportunity • Set a “calling hour” on your calendar; open your contacts, scroll, and call. Reach out with no agenda! • When you're clear about your avatar, who you'd like to do business with, it makes calling easier. • Connection happens when you're living in your purpose, have intention, and come from a place of personal values. • Analysis paralysis happens when people are trying to decide the “right” course of action. (Hint: just take a step and course correct from there.) • If you're feeling “off” from your business, write a love letter to it. That'll land you in gratitude and you'll feel better all around. Find Braith at www.BraithBamkin.com.au and on all social sites. Podcaster's note: During this podcast which was recorded in August of 2023, we mention the fires in Hawaii and reflect briefly on other disasters. The devastation that resulted from the fires in Hawaii turned out to be one of the state's worst disasters (if not the worst recorded disaster) and our hearts go out to those affected. Though a very brief portion of the conversation, we want to honor those who bravely fought the fires and offer condolences for those who lost so much.
What can you learn about leadership and culture from a guy whose background is in music and dueling pianos? A LOT! Greg Offner talks about The Tip Jar culture coming from corporate HR and risk management, he noticed what really got people engaged at work and at the dueling piano bar. His lessons serve us all. Key points for leaders to ponder: • Work is a performance. We perform a task. We are in service to others. • Show up from a place of service pondering, “What do they need from me to make sure this performance goes well?” • Your job as a leader is to remove the friction, anything that can get in their way of doing a good job. • Your title or rank is simply a validation, not a reward. It's a tool of authority. How will you use that tool? • Know that by working together, we elevate the experience of everyone! Beware of misaligned incentives. • Note that you can't create engagement. You create an experience. ○ When team members choose to engage or disengage, a decision was made to do just that. • The culture shifts to creating impact vs. trading hours for income. • Create shared values - ○ Allow people to opt in ◘ Create actionable steps for them to do so. ◘ Teach them how to fit in so there's a sense of ownership As the host of OneSharpSword, I loved this interview. Greg Offner is a master presenter and he speaks to a pet of mine, building a Culture of Caring, from such a unique perspective. Reach out to Greg on all social media. From ADD and Sugar Addiction to Rock Climbing, Parenting, and Holistic Wellness, today we welcome Adam Hart who addresses Nervous System Regulation. Nothing in this podcast is intended as medical or other professional advice. Please see a medical professional for your specific situation and symptom management. In this episode you'll hear about anxiety that developed from an emotionally absent father. The question of worthiness crops up (as it does for most people) and Adam offers a simple solution as an exercise to try. Breathing! Adam found that a certain breath routine allowed him to control his nervous responses to rock climbing. And the side benefit of that was not being emotionally hijacked as a parent. Listen in as he talks about the idea of Co-Regulating the Experience (for a child or anyone who is in a super-stressed state). Here's his methodology for regulation through breath, and he says it takes just 33 seconds three times a day: Breathe in through your nose to the count of four; breathe out through your mouth to the count of seven. This formula has been around for ages, and Adam puts his own spin on it. He invites you to join him in his Heart Flow Breath Practice at www.ClearImpact.io Watch how this helps you connect you to presence, true presence. You then become a conscious human being holding space for coregulation of another. Be sure to go to www.ClearImpact.io And reach out to Adam at Adam@ClearImpact.io
Tim Shurr helps uplevel people from their old ways of thinking to a higher quality of life by noting that you're just One Belief Away from having the life that you want. Tactical Strategies for changing your life are truly just One Belief Away. (By the way, that's the name of the book he co-authored with Joe Vitale. I just ordered it myself.) We discussed Tim's upbringing and how that affected him. His response, “yes, we turn our messes into our message.” Big T and little t traumas. Little t are those like being embarrassed. Big T are those like a major loss, huge health issue, or violence. Stories develop from both and the world seems unsafe. Our response to those stories, how we gave meaning to an incident, is what gets anchored. Began studying hypnosis; recognized that your mind can create barriers while the subconscious is running the show to keep you “safe.” Tim quotes some great authors and notes how the mind works by having made judgements based on limited information. The quality of your beliefs and the questions you ask yourself determines the quality of your life! Think about what your subconscious does to give you the answers to these: • How could I have been so stupid? • How did I get this lucky? Keagen Hadley is a doctor of Occupational Therapy and psychiatric clinical researcher specializing in acceptance and commitment therapy and the holistic care of joint injuries. Keagen notes that his role is to bridge the gap between the physical and psychological, as most people only focus on one or the other. He follows a path that's similar to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). His is Acceptance And Commitment Therapy, the basics of which are to use your experience as basis for learning and then committing to changing what's not working. Six pillars to consider: • Diffusion - separating your thoughts from your self, as a person • Acceptance - the understanding that life has ups and downs and you'll get to experience them. • How you choose to interpret them matters. • Mindfulness - a reminder that living in the moment, every moment, matters • Using your Self as a context = looking at what mask you choose to wear for a public role vs. the true you that you are • Taking Purposeful Action - Life is grand and plans are good, but you have to move from where you are to make anything happen • Values - Goals need to be tied to values. This last one is particularly important to me. In my Exponential Success Summit, we dive into the need for getting super clear about your Values first, then being able to set your goals from there. Tips for mindfulness: No one on One Sharp Sword is prescribing activity or remedy. If you need assistance consult a medical/psychological professional. Keagen discussed a methodology called progressive overload wherein you give your body something it's not used to for a short duration of time, then come back and incrementally increase the exposure, whether that's an ice bath or lifting weights at a certain level. He suggests paying attention to your thoughts as you increase the time you give yourself to engage in the activity. Melissa “Liss” Kirby has been changing lives as a management consultant for the past thirteen years. Based in Melbourne, she consults internationally and is tied to Q5Partners, located in the UK. With a background in business, psychology, and political science, Liss began paid internships at some major organizations. Now, several years later, she runs the Melbourne extension of q5partners. Trust and Being Entrusted were key threads of our conversation. As a management consultant, you're an entrusted advisor. She notes that the “wins” gained in this position aren't about her; “...you're always a back-up singer.” Organizational health begins by defining why you exist - what's your Purpose? I love this question as a place to start because it's the essence of the existential dilemma for every individual. As an individual, it's hard to know until you're really living your life in Flow. As an organization, it needs to be defined. Liss asks leaders two key questions: • How do decisions get made? • What happens in a crisis? Though leadership and organization focused, these concepts can relate to each person, as an individual, as well as couples and families. Then, Q5 looks at: • Purpose and Strategy • Organization Design • Development and Culture - an area that I personally think is fundamentally vital • Transformation and Change Liss offers us insight into culture shift and how it is to be co-designed and not dictated. Just imagine what you can learn from an elite coach for professional NFL and NHL players! Here's Coach Tim Adams (search all the socials for him as @CoachTimAdams) and in this episode of OneSharpSword, we reveal something that our respective teams didn't even know we were dreaming up. Starting as many do, with meager means in a small town then moving and growing up in Colorado, joining the AirForce, and then blowing out his knee twice, Tim found that he could help others elevate their skills. He said that Curiosity (yayyyy - a pet word of mine) and Exuberance allowed him to seek out some of the highest level coaches out there and learn from them, thereby elevating his ability to help others. After a life upheaval, he did a full on retooling, shedding what no longer belonged in his life. (Such parallels for me in his story, which is why I wanted him on the program and why we're working on a project together.) He said that originally, lack was his driving force. Now, he feels called. I call that listening to the whispers and being pulled from your heart. Tim looks at the Somatic Emotional bridge and sees where high achievers can experience more in their lives. And in our discussion, we noted that “more” sometimes means living more simply. He spoke of the traumas that some people have endured and I noted that we're all exposed to microtraumas throughout the day. His point was that we don't have to get to chaos in order to make a change. Shortcuts? Sure - doing the right work IS the shortcut. For self care consider these three steps: 1) Stop and listen. Just… listen. 2) Walk! Get outside and move. Feel the sense of your body in locomotion. 3) Connect with your body. Connect with nature. Connect with someone else. And the big surprise reveal is that Tim and I are working on a small-group exclusive experiential two (or three) day program. It's called the Exponential Success™ Experiment, since Tim and I haven't worked together as a team before, but we bring so much high level work from different directions. It's going to be an amazing few days together. Look for it in a few months and find out more, here: www.ExponentialSuccessExperiment.com Find Tim everywhere @CoachTimAdams or Support@CoachTimAdams.comIf you're interested in joining us at the Exponential Success Experiment, reach out to me at WayneP@DynamicLeader.com
We covered A LOT in this brief episode! Born to an abusive, drug addicted mother, Victoria didn't have the easiest start. But resilience is her theme and she notes that “growth comes from sitting in discomfort.” From studying psychology with the intention to go into law to actually getting into the corporate world and recruited to oversee operations, she's only grown and given since! Calling herself a Multi-Potentialite, she says she has her hands in many buckets. And that she does - from high level consulting to sitting on boards and becoming the CEO of her own company, Victoria is definitely IN it. Take away concepts: • Business is done by being known, liked, and trusted. • Eminence - your unique subject matter - is important to harness • Define your difference, your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) • Lean into what you want to be known for, your legacy • Build it NOW, Curate, Pivot, and Change! Manuj Aggarwal has a scary topic: Artificial Intelligence. Well, it seems scary until you get into it and he addresses some key fears right away. • No, AI won't take away jobs. • Yes, it's here to stay. • Yes, as with calculators, microwaves, and computers, you'll need to learn to work with it. • You need to learn to ask better and better questions A.I. reflects your world of bias, based on the questions you as an individual pose to it. That said, if you think bigger and bigger and A.I. is harvesting global information in seconds, it could solve real world problems. This was an awesome and mind-expanding interview. Enjoy! What is THE key ingredient to making anything happen in a relationship, at home, at work, or in the world? That ingredient is TRUST. We are so fortunate to have Dr Darryl Stickel, the world's foremost expert on the topic of TRUST join us for this podcast. This one ranks among the top 1% of my personal favorites, by the way. Why? Because the information offered here permeates EVERYTHING we do. Like so many, Darryl didn't have an easy start. Coming from a rough and rugged town in British Columbia, Darryl learned to stick up for others in the face of bullies. He also learned that he was protected as well. But his path wasn't that easy. He became legally blind along the way and, in an altercation on the hockey ice, Darryl was beaten badly by a “fan” with a stick. Key ingredients to this podcast: • We interpret the world through stories; so what stories do you feed? • How do you gain a sustainable competitive advantage over any competition? ○ You build sustainable long term relationships! • Trust becomes the “social lubricant” as it helps bring out imagination, creativity, and productivity. • The Equation: Perceived Uncertainty X Perceived Vulnerability = RISK ○ How likely is it I'll be harmed X How badly will it hurt = RISK • These are in your power to change the Trust Balance in the relationship: ○ Benevolence - demonstrating you have the others' best interest at heart ○ Integrity - your actions that demonstrate follow-through on your word ○ Ability - can you actually DO what you said you'd do ○ Context - what is the nature of the engagement, where are you, with whom, etc. • If Uncertainty is high, it's likely that Vulnerability will be lower (you - or the other - will feel a need for self-protection) • Leadership Mistake: Cling to the old out of fear of making a mistake. ○ Antidote: Lean into learning the new ◘ Share your responses to when you make mistakes • Create a shared narrative www.TrustUnlimited.com Darryl@TrustUnlimited.com Building Trust - at all book sellers.
You might think the topic of Project Management would be boring. Ordinarily, you might be right. And yet, the people behind this disruptive technology are anything but boring! What can you learn from a woman who's a partner in the development and distribution of a start-up app that's project-management based? A LOT. Her journey is something as she doesn't have a college degree, but she was playing in the big-kids' sandbox at Proctor and Gamble and Starbucks. Her app is something as it's AI-based and streamlines the logistics timeline for builders. And her heart-centered giving is something, employing a company devoted to helping trafficked women. April Moss is awesome and DigiBuild is a company to keep an eye out for! April@DigiBuild.comwww.DigiBuild.com
What does a retired Marine Chief Warrant Officer know about having tough, sexy confidence? Well, Sandra Gonzalez lives it, speaks about it, and teaches it. During our interview, Sandra shared how her father influenced her to go into the military and how she fell in love with the Marines. As a woman, she had to prove herself over and over. That got her to be tough, internally. During this interview, you wouldn't be able to tell that she's as much of a badass as she is. Through some tough times of divorce, death, and debt (a bad divorce followed by the loss of her father each of which cost her dearly) she realized that internal resilience will see her through. She notes, there aren't losses, only beautiful lessons. She now teaches high-level entrepreneurs how to take command of any room they walk into. Requisites: You have to want to grow. You have to have a warrior's mindset to shift past obstacles and open to opportunities Battle the inner critic and the voices of uncertainty Give yourself compassion She says, just believe, “I'm going to be okay.” Find Sandra at www.SandraGonzalez.com www.SexyConfidenceTraining.com And on IG @CoachSandraGonzalez
Byron Athene is a psychotherapist and a bit of a philosopher who believes we have some concepts wrong when it comes to emotions. He backs into his theory by explaining that a lot of people think that we need to have bad to explain (or enjoy) the good and that if something good happens, something bad is likely to happen. Personally, I'm more a fan of the law of polarity which says that both exist at the same time, so what is it we're actually focusing on. Byron says that some people believe that “bad” emotions exist to motivate you. And I have a different view around that type of motivation. We get ethics and morals when we're younger, we also are given the good child/bad child constructs based on behavior for the sake of control. And then there's what Byron calls the inevitability theory. We're bound to feel bad about certain things. I'm not certain about any of this, but I'm willing to entertain it because I want ideas to percolate through here. For me, I learned early on that I could choose which emotions to feel. We, as adults with adult language, perception, and constructs, can choose what we experience and feel. Where Byron and I agree is on the point of what we believe creates our reality. Well, Byron takes us to HIS theory, what he class the Baby Theory. In short: Babies cry to get their needs met. Babies learn that by feeling bad, they're comforted. And therefore, they take the syllogistic tree (If/Then) to the emotional place of “If I feel bad, I'll get the comfort I need.” He sees “bad” emotions as manipulative. And I'm not so sure I agree with him. Still, he's an agreeable person and it was an amazing conversation. I invite you to tune in. For more from Byron, go to www.ByronAthene.com And check his article here: https://www.brainzmagazine.com/post/why-do-we-feel-bad

Blair is all about Resilience. Most people would find a cave to hide in if they experienced the sequential losses of family members that Blair endured. But her story is not one of retreat. Quite the opposite, in fact. Hers is one in which “bouncing forward” defines resilience. For someone who says that she lives with depression and anxiety, this interview is filled with energy and genuine smiles. TheGlobalResilienceProject.com is both the name of her book and her passion project. Like a muscle that you train, learning to bounce forward when the time is needed takes five easy “secret” steps: Practice Gratitude - one way to do that is to list (or share with someone) three things that you're grateful for in the past 24 hours Fuel your body and your mind - What are you eating, drinking, and letting in mentally? From food to drama to media, get super aware of what's in and what's no longer allowed in. Forest Bathing or from the Japanese, Shinrin-Yoku, means to absorb the forest atmosphere. In short, just get outside! Sleep! Your body and your mind need sleep to integrate and restore. Plan your day around the sleep you need, not the other way around. Share your story! You're not alone and the best way to bounce forward is to share your story and maybe listen as someone else To find out more, go to: www.TheGlobalResilienceProject.com And www.BlairKaplan.ca (that's ca, not com because Yayyy Canada!)
I've never done anything political on my show. But this is One Sharp Sword - cutting through to what matters most. So when I was introduced to a man who has been a U.S. Gov't contractor (which he admits is a euphemism for spy) who found his moral compass wouldn't let him act on the president's orders, I wanted to learn more. With Phillip Drake, there IS more. He's also directly involved in rescuing girls and women from the sex trafficking industry. This is a huge issue, because it's happening right here - no matter where you are - it's happening around you. And, because of what he knows and because of what he believes, he's put his hat in the ring to become the next U.S. President. So, I've potentially interviewed the next president of the United States. Yes, a lot of things need to align for that to happen, but it's possible. And I invite you to listen in to what Phillip Drake believes in and see if there's anything you'd really push against. If nothing else, we've got some amazing leadership lessons woven throughout this content. I think this guy could actually bring people together over a conversation, not a shouting match. And look, you don't have to agree with everything he says. I don't agree with 100% of everything that my best friend says. But I listen. And if any other presidential candidate wants to be interviewed on my show, I'd entertain the idea. Here's Phillip Drake's story: After being involved in spying on U.S. Citizens under the Office of the Inspector General, he had his son five years ago and his perspective and values changed. He notes becoming a man of principles and integrity. This interview takes place on his family farm in South Carolina and he notes that he was taught to do the right thing and noted that the world isn't always fair. In terms of politics, Phillip notes that we need to really work with people. Big companies and government organizations are entities. And entities have no feelings. Agents are extensions of entities and we need to ensure that agents can actually act on behalf of The Constitution. Phillip makes no bones about some of the things that are wrong in this country: “The school system is a joke! We're not taught history correctly. Nor were we taught about The Constitution correctly.” Separately he emphasizes, “The Constitution is the law of the land!” But who really knows what it says? In terms of running for president, Mr. Drake notes that it's not something he necessarily wants to do, but it's something he feels he has to do! Leadership lessons: • Stay Curious - Phillip decided to run for president then decided to learn what it would take to do that. He never stops learning. • Go for your goals - there will be obstacles, but your passion for the outcome will help you overcome the obstacles. • Just communicate! So simple, yet so hard to do! David Achata is a leadership coach and management consultant. He's a soft-spoken, reflective extrovert who loves hiking and mountain biking. Rather than traditional college, David pursued the path of spending a decade in pastoral ministry. He found that saying YES to opportunities paved the way for him. As he's opened to authenticity, he's learning about and leading others in showing the True Self vs. The False Self (sometimes the one that's more public if alignment and maturity aren't present). His history made him overly responsible and feeling like he needed to create control around everything and now he embodies being able to approach situations with open hands vs. those that grasp and end up with nothing. His new book is Executive Retreats for Busy Business Leaders, though it's relevant to everyone. A few concepts stand out - Go Away Alone Go Away with a Guide Go Away with Your Team Go Away with Your Family (to which I'd add, get time away with your partner) Doing this - getting away - will help you find your Vision (and your shared vision). Axel Meierhoefer still carries his accent with him, having come from a port town in Germany. He became fascinated with flying because of his Grandfather and Uncle's involvement with the airlines. He passed the pilot's test for Lufthansa just as they stopped hiring. Instead, he found the U.S. Airforce and moved up the ranks to become an instructor. Following the path of learning what makes for success, looking for clues both within and outside of the military, especially focused on what makes for a good leader. Exploring what the wealthy do with their money to protect it and grow it, Axel found real estate. While broad, Axel narrowed his scope to Residential Real Estate and now helps people on their path to Time and Money Freedom by showing how to become successful in owning property, even if you don't have a lot of money to start with. Axel offers a sound perspective in this interview and though there can never be promises about investing returns or offers of tax advice, much of what Axel talks about is worth looking into further. Peter Anthony helps us understand how to sell more without pushing a sale, but rather by simply being authentic. Recognizing that sales isn't about foisting something on someone, but actually helping the other person by solving a problem for them, we enter the magical world of collaboration. Collabradabra! When Peter joined IBM and was sent to sales training, he found that his curiosity overrode what he was taught. While his supervisors weren't pleased with his style of selling by actually finding out about the other person, they couldn't argue with his results. Peter now helps organizations grow by helping them collaborate internally and externally. As so many of my guests discuss, we touched on alignment as a topic. Spend time talking with team members, find out about them, tell them about yourself and your values. Peter notes that the quality of your relationships is based on the quality of your conversations. He also points out that conversations are like playing a game, which wouldn't be any fun if only one person had a turn. Meaning in your work is found when you think of the end user. Talking about owning a franchise isn't sexy. In fact, it made me, as the podcast host, wonder why I should have someone who does franchise stuff on the program. And then, I thought about what I teach - and I got curious. I went to a place of judgment, so I knew I must be missing something. What was it about franchises that I was missing? Stacey Marmolejo grew up being guided to stick to things that were safe and more secure. The military was a secure career route, but she didn't want that. Corporate was secure, and it's a path she took. Until she didn't. She pivoted into franchising after watching her son come alive with energy in a music camp. Stacey found a music school where she could help her son and other kids find a way to be themselves and become more expressive, while belonging to a group. Who knew that franchises could offer comfort like that? There are over 4,000 franchise brands from which to select and they're not all mainstream. How do you now which one is for you, if any? Stacey will walk you through a competency assessment, a motivation assessment, and review your finances. She advises, buy a franchise you can afford. Later in the program she notes that you only need about 30% of the buy in costs because the Small Business Administration will help. Get your loan through an SBA Preferred Bank and you'll be on a great path. If this is your first business, it's like a paid internship to learn how to run a business. You get the playbook. Yep, if you want to own your own business, consider a franchise. There's so much more! Listen in for great tidbits. And for a free, no-obligation chat with Stacey, reach out to her at StaceyMarmolejo@gmail.com

These days, he's a corporate speaker and occasional Karaoke DJ. Here are some of the key insights from today's podcast: The pressure to have fun can suck the fun out of the situation (wedding, vacation, etc.) So relax a bit. Take the pressure off. The benefits of play include: Creativity Where stress demands that you find that one right answer, play evokes a level of permission to play as a path to seeking alternative answers. Confidence Conditioning, both mentally and physically Communication Culture - be deliberate about the culture you're building for yourself Great memories are made in the dynamic movement between chaos and order Get away from your usual confines of where you live or work. Every so often you meet people that are just darned impressive. Gary Garth is one of those people. He thinks I'm impressive. Perspective is everything I suppose. He started a business in Denmark when he was 19 years old. He claims to have done everything wrong, but in talking with him, it turns out that he learned and pivoted. And that's the real lesson here. Don't set out to fail, just know that you'll run into obstacles. Learn and move forward. Gary reminds us that “you're always in sales” and to keep looking for opportunities. They're right in front of you. Focus on what moves you - dive in deep and invest in your purpose. As with other successful guests, Gary notes, “look for patterns.” Gary gives us important information about go to market strategies. To overcome obstacles, know both your customer's and your own pain points. Constantly evolve yourself. Where there's uncertainty, there's hesitation. Get clear. Lean in. Gary has offered our audience a very, very special offer. You need to listen in, to get it!!! Every so often, I'll have coaches or consultants on the One Sharp Sword podcast who parallel the work that I'm into. The reason I choose to bring them on is to amplify a particular message. We can get to the same place and take different paths to get there. And that's part of the message I want to bring as I introduce you to Brian Gorman. In doing work with leaders and organizations, he's quick to point out that “it isn't the organization that changes. It's people.” In the same way that I ask my clients to think about what they would treasure and encourage listening to the whispers, Brian succinctly queries, “What makes your heart sing?” And I love that question so much because it implies that joy is within the answer! Brian brings a perspective few of us have, simply because of the extra years that he's lived. He says he gained an awareness of disparity, a phrase I love because it demands action or deliberate inaction. Culture isn't part of an organization, it lives inside of people. People have memories, desires, and biases. This episode is rich with content. At the bottom of everything, you'll find empathy and humanity. Enjoy! Never, ever judge the contents of a package by its wrapper. Mike Kaeding, an unassuming guy who looks like he's a coder for a gaming company, is a real life superhero out to change the world. The CEO of a $200M+ company with over 250 employees, Mike runs a residential real-estate development company. Mike's company is based on and in solid values. He focuses on making housing affordable and he's created a fully in-house model to do so. Rather than spend a bit on a developer, and more on a contractor, and more on the sub-specialists, he's pulled together a strong team. Mike believes in humanity and in bringing the best both out of people, and also to people. The best, though, comes as an iterative process. This CEO wants his employees to know that they have psychological safety. He's strategic about creating the environment for people to love their work, while also placing the onus of responsibility for doing that on each employee. It's a great model and this unassuming CEO, Mike Kaeding, is an enduring student and grand mentor in leadership, where lessons linger just below the surface of all he does. Listen in to learn more. Meet a super under-stated bad-ass! Mark Ashby is an Australian who was in the special forces and did some exceptionally covert ops. He did numerous tours in Iraq and he helped ensure the completion of some high-end projects. This is vague, on purpose. With all of that said, when we spoke after this recording, he teared-up a bit talking about the 911 monument in New York. There's a gentle humanity that comes through and you would never suspect that his background was one of special operations. He said that returning to school at 48 y/o was a bit intimidating for him. But what did he study? Yeah, he got his Masters in Counter Terrorism. He now engages in leadership development. Huge take away points: We all have our issues, it doesn't matter who you are. You've got to learn to stay calm under pressure. Remember that in business, it's not like someone is going to get blown up if you leave a task undone overnight. Stay human; don't forget who you are and where you came from. No matter your rank or position, you're still human. Relate to others that way. While connection is human, emotions need to come out of decision making. As a leader, your job is to bring out the best of the talented people right in front of you. Talk with them! Learn about them. Build trust together. Keep learning - in order to be ready, you've got to keep training every day. Go to www.MarkAshbyConsulting.com/masterclass Reach out at Mark@MarkAshbyConsulting.com
Bryan Gillette uses his experience as an ultra-distance athlete as a foundation for his work in leadership development. The lessons are simple, but not always easy. Build Communication (but what kind, and how?) Humanize (should be easy enough, so why isn't it happening?) Engage cross-functional teams Stay curious This, of course, is a favorite topic of mine. After the show, I showed Bryan the Curious George monkey that I'll bring to events. The little stuffed guy sparks conversation to which I'll note that when you stay curious, you cannot be in judgment. Curious George has been on stages with me and in small group settings so much that when I show up to do a training, someone will inevitably ask where he is! Dealing with change requires knowing that everything in your life had a new origin for you at some point. There was a time you hadn't done it before and now it's a part of your life. Focus on a bigger purpose. What do you do when you want to pursue art and you recognize a need to make money? Head to Wall Street! There, Miriam faced trials of having to prove her worth, doing so by making herself visible. Several leadership lessons reveal themselves as Miriam talked about how she approached her climb on Wall Street and her love of art. One of these focuses on guerilla marketing and getting yourself in the place where your customers are! Art gives people meaning (as people bring meaning to the art they experience). Become visible or known; move people. Let them experience who you are and what you stand for. What stops you from standing up and standing out is fear - fear of being rejected. And that's an anti-survival tactic. Miriam reminds us that brains evolved for survival, not achievement, and that we need to be able to push past the basics of survival in order to truly achieve. Push past fear. You deserve to be seen and heard. To see and hear more of Miriam Schulman, please go to The Inspiration Place Podcast for marketing and mindset.
