What do we do with the seemingly never-ending emotions that can come in this generation? How do we manage the persistent feelings of anxiety and depression that can overtake our lives as believers?Dr. Kevin Chapman has worked with countless individuals struggling with anxiety and depression. As a believer and clinician, he has seen how powerful emotions can be in the lives of the people he helps. And through his work, he has also seen the hope that can come in the healing that can be found through Christ and God's word. By learning to take captive the thoughts that often precede big emotions, Dr. Chapman has seen major shifts in how emotions impact a believer. In his book, Mastering Our Emotions: Biblical Principles for Emotional Health, he helps readers walk through how to do just that as they encounter their own emotional responses to life's challenges. In this episode, Davey and Dr. Chapman talk about how to untangle our identity in Christ from the labels of a mental health diagnosis, how to even begin to manage our emotions, and why so many teens are struggling with anxiety and depression in this generation. If you find it difficult to control your responses to the difficulties in life, this conversation will empower you to know that even in the midst of the most painful setbacks and challenges, you have agency in how you respond to your emotions and that with the power of God, you can learn Biblical principles to master your emotions. Send us a textDr. Kevin Chapman shares biblical principles for mastering our emotions through cognitive behavioral therapy techniques that align with God's Word. His robust approach shows how we can transform our emotional responses by understanding the true purpose of emotions and learning to respond to them in healthier ways.• Emotions aren't our problem – our responses to them create distress.• The "Emotional Seal" framework: Situation, Emotion, After, Later helps identify emotional patterns.• Emotional avoidance (suppressing feelings) brings temporary relief but worsens emotions long-term.• Seven "being skills" form the foundation of emotional mastery, starting with being present.• Kingdom questions help challenge negative thought patterns with biblical truth.• Luke 21:19 reveals we are meant to "possess" (master) our souls.• Neuroticism is a tendency to experience intense negative emotions that can be overcome.• Mastering emotions requires consistent practice, not just management.• Understanding the difference between living in the "kingdom of feelings" vs. God's kingdom.• Genetic predispositions from the Fall can be transformed through intentional reprogramming. To learn more about mastering your emotions through biblical principles, find Dr. Kevin Chapman's book "Mastering Our Emotions: Biblical Principles for Emotional Health" wherever books are sold.Download Dr. Kevin's incredible guide to his new book: Master Your EmotionsSupport the showBegin Your Heartlifter's Journey: Visit and subscribe to Heartlift Central on Substack. HB is afraid of giant statues. He says that lately has fear has become so bad that is has manifested it in his dreams. Once of the more vivid dreams he's had involved him being left alone in a dark cavern with nothing but a flashlight, where he's forced to find those dark-faced figures all alone. He knows it's silly, but surprisingly he's not alone. On this episode of Your Weirdest Fears, host Larry Mullins sits down with Dr. Kevin Chapman. A licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Chapman has dealt with this fear in many patients. He helps Larry understand how common the fear is, and explains whether or not there's a larger anxiety looming above those statues. You can learn more about Dr. Chapman and his work here.
