Listen in as I share how the most generous interpretation and deliberately assuming positive intent open us up to curiosity and compassion so we don't overlook the root cause of our habits. Throughout the episode, I'll provide clear examples to reinforce this approach and offer a host of excellent resources. If you have a conversation with someone and there is silence, how often do you make this mean that they don't like you, or you have annoyed them, or that you must have done something wrong? When you draw conclusions, you place something in a context and give it meaning, often based on past events and circumstances. Sometimes this meaning can be useful but other times it will weigh you down and make you feel stuck. So how do you go from meaning-making that is not useful yet has been repeated for decades to meaning-making that actually serves you? I show you how to start paying attention to what you're making things mean and why doing so will help you be more deliberate about how you feel, show up, and experience life. Discover the difference between meaning-making that is useful and meaning-making that makes things harder for yourself, and learn how to pay attention to the conclusions you draw about yourself and others. Her certification in Advanced Feminist Coaching is underway. Self-Care Through Real Conversation In this episode, I'm joined by my friend and personal sounding board, Dr. Kristi Angevine. We've been friends for years and have always trusted each other to provide the perspective we need when we have a problem. This episode is all about self-care through real conversations, and that's just what Kristi does for me. We hold space for each other to process and regulate our emotions in a supportive and safe space. But this does bring up the conversation on when and where to offer coaching advice – if you are friendly with a coach, you both need to be explicit about entering into a coaching-type conversation. Making Friends as an Adult Your friends can help you see what you're having difficulty seeing at the moment. They give you perspective. But even when seeking help from your friends, it's important that you're honest with yourself about what you need. We both recognize how difficult it is to make friends as an adult. The dynamics are totally different from when we're kids, but adult friendships are so valuable. Having friends available to ask for help when you need it is one of life's greatest gifts – and it's something we all need to be more comfortable doing. Finally, we talk about the importance of setting boundaries with your friends… but also being ready to have difficult conversations that come up when you do set boundaries or say “no.” How do your friends support you through your difficult moments? What do your friends mean to you? Let me know in the comments on the episode page. Rumination is not just thinking repeatedly about something. This is introspection. Instead, rumination is persevering on distressing ideas. It is an intrusive and obsessive act rather than a deep reflection. In fact, rumination is our go-to place when things are uncomfortable. Someone may have said something upsetting to you. And then you repeat that conversation in your head. Five million times. So ruminating is tough. On the one hand, it gives you a sense of power and control over the situation. But, on the other, it can be very destructive. Besides, rumination is like a stationary bike. It goes nowhere. Today's guest, Dr. Kristi Angevine, will help us understand why ruminating is a habit and how to deconstruct it. Dr. Kristi Angevine is a board-certified ObGyn and also a certified life coach. Anyone who has a tendency to overwork will tell you that it feels more like an innate way of functioning than a deeply-rooted but optional habit we can deconstruct and change. Underneath our overworking habit and discomfort with doing less are long-held protective mechanisms that keep us in motion to our own detriment. How do we uncover why we overwork, overcome our discomfort with stillness and install a healthier way of working into our default behavior? In this episode, habits expert, coach and host of Habits on Purpose, Dr. Kristi Angevine returns to talk about the habit of overworking that's highly prevalent in female physicians and the most self-compassionate way to overcome it. Not advocating for ourselves is a deeply wired habit…surely it's who we are by our very nature and it can't be changed, right? Well, according to a habits expert, no. Even though not advocating for ourselves feels automatic and innate, it might just be an acquired behavior we can unlearn. We talk about how to get to the headspace of being worth advocating for, and actually put it into action. Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode - Where the habit comes from How does socialization, culture and training affect how we show up for ourselves? - How to tell if we have the habit of not advocating for ourselves What steps can we take to create the psychological safety to actually identify the habit of not advocating for ourselves? - Simple ways to experiment with showing up If advocating for ourselves at work feels new and unfamiliar, how do we increase our risk tolerance in low stakes situations?
