Jon Fogel: Punishment-Free Parenting Jon Fogel is a husband, a father of four, and a parenting educator. His goal is to teach how to parent more effectively, with less stress and more success by combining modern neuroscience, developmental psychology, counseling, and positive, gentle parenting wisdom. He is the author of Punishment-Free Parenting: The Brain-Based Way to Raise Kids Without Raising Your Voice*. Most of us aspire to lead well in every area of our lives, not just in the workplace. A key place for leadership with many of us is with our kids and the other young people in our lives. In this conversation, Jon and I discuss how to raise kids without raising your voice. Key Points Consequences and punishment are not the same thing, even if the words are used interchangeably. Our kids want us to like them. They are not giving you a hard time; they're having a hard time. Punishment doesn't “teach kids a lesson.” More often, it crowds out higher level thinking and children are unable to remember what they were being punished for. Rather than imposing retribution, help children surface that natural and logistical consequences of their behaviors. Get curious, not furious. Often, there's a perfectly rational reason that children are acting they way they are. Children are great imitators. So give them something great to imitate. This week, I have the pleasure of speaking with Kristin Keffeler, Chief Learning Officer at the Johnson Financial Group. Kristin is a celebrated author of such influential books in our industry as the recently published Wealth 3.0: The Future of Family Wealth Advising, and The Myth of the Silver Spoon: Navigating Family Wealth & Creating an Impactful Life. She is also the Dean of Family Positive Psychology at the Purposeful Planning Institute. Kristin is passionate about the challenges and opportunities facing the rising-gen members of enterprising families, a subject she covers in depth in her influential book, The Myth of the Silver Spoon. She delves into the topic here, especially focusing on how the strengths-based approach can unlock the rising gen's potential for success, happiness, and impact. She also describes the challenges that are potentially holding back rising-gen members and their parents – the things she calls “clutter” in her book – and offers suggestions on how to overcome them. Kristin also talks about the core theses of her other recently released book, Wealth 3.0, which she co-authored with Jim Grubman and Dennis Jaffee. This visionary book has been widely seen as primarily focused on or aimed at the family wealth advisor profession and its impending evolution, however, Kristin talks here about the clients, the families who are served by the advisor community, and the role they too play in the Wealth 3.0 evolution. She describes how family member education, awareness, and expectations of what Wealth 3.0 is and how it should serve them are critical drivers of the coming change. Kristin also offers some practical tips and tools for family members, including parents and the younger generations. She indicates what parents can do to enable a positive strengths-based engagement and to catalyze the evolution of their family and advisor interactions and processes toward the Wealth 3.0 model. She also outlines the opportunities for the younger generation and the role they can play to bring about and drive the positive, strengths-driven Wealth 3.0 approach of engaging with their family, the family enterprise, and the advisor ecosystem that surrounds them. Don't miss this engaging conversation with one of our industry's foremost thinkers and practitioners specializing in the rising gen and their success and well-being.
Today we are speaking with once again Dr. James Grubman, an internationally recognized consultant to families of wealth, family businesses, and the advisors who serve them. He is the co-author of one of the buzziest books of the year called Wealth 3.0: The Future of Family Wealth Advising along with Dennis Jaffe and Kristin Keffeler, who I have also interviewed previously on this podcast. I wanted to talk to Jim and get some more color on his attitudes towards wealth advising, the issues with the literature and research in the space, how to escape from a fear-based mindset to one of growth around wealth, and why everyone does not necessarily want to create a dynasty. Please enjoy my excellent conversation with Jim Grubman. NOTE: This podcast is for educational and entertainment purposes only. #046. Today's guest is Kristin Keffeler. Kristin talks about her experiences as the daughter of wealth-creating parents, including her story of receiving a new sports car as a gift from her father, and the confusing feelings she began to experience. She details who her book is written for, the 4 common hidden tripwires that can really get in the way of people growing up in affluent families and the 4 types of inner and outer clutter that inhibits the ability of the rising generation to grow. Kristin discusses the most effective ways to clear away clutter in our lives, including the inner work that must be done plus actionable strategies in bringing awareness to clearing away clutter, most specifically money clutter. She outlines when wealth can turn from being a benefit to a detriment in our children's lives, how parents can build valuable character traits in their children and develop their skills around grit and growth mindset, and how to parent based on values and based on a family culture parents are trying to create. We close with tangible and actionable tips that parents can integrate into their interactions with their kids to develop those traits and why celebrating the journey and effort from your kids is important, rather than results.Show notes and more at:https://moneydadpodcast.com/session046
Rich kids are perceived as free from life's toughest challenges. “Having it all.” But being raised in affluence brings a unique set of pressures and hidden tripwires. Guest Kristin Keffeler, MSM, MAPP, is a thought leader and consultant at the forefront of a global shift in family wealth advising, known as Wealth 3.0. Today, I have the pleasure of speaking with Jim Grubman, a prominent thought leader, researcher, and advisor to multigenerational families in our industry. Jim and his equally prominent co-authors, Dennis Jaffe and Kristin Keffeler, have just published their latest book, Wealth 3.0. Jim and I discuss the Wealth 3.0 concept and the new paradigm it introduces for our field of private wealth management and family wealth advising. We talk about how Wealth 3.0 thinking and practices fundamentally differ from the established practices of the past 3-4 decades. The change in mindset and behaviors this future paradigm entails will have a broad and far-reaching impact on the wealth management industry at large, and will outright transform the more niche, specialized, and fast-growing field of family wealth advisory services. Everything from how the industry organizes itself to how it conducts research to how advisors are trained and certified to the language and terminology they use in day-to-day conversations with their ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) clients. The book is a quick and fascinating read, and will likely become an important manifesto, and required reading, for future generations of family wealth advisors. Clients can also benefit greatly from this concept, which can help them evolve their own thinking, their interactions within their family, and their expectations of their trusted family advisors. Enjoy this conversation, and look for the Wealth 3.0 book, which just came out this week on Amazon.
Helping people develop a right relationship with money, particularly the younger generations in families of wealth and influence, is the unique focus of the work done by this week's guest, Kristin Keffeler. As a leading practitioner of family wealth advising called Wealth 360, she supports families of significant means in doing what she calls the “inner work” of money. It's not just about managing portfolios, but developing a healthy life identity around the dollar signs. This may be the most personal episode we've yet done from Warwick's perspective, given his history as the 5th generation heir to a multibillion-dollar media dynasty in his home nation of Australia. The ground he and Keffeler cover here not only offers insights and action steps for families like the one Warwick was born into, but to any family that can benefit from shoring up its relationship to money and their relationships to each other. At the root of finding that health, Keffeler explains, is understanding that the formation of personal identity separate from the numbers on a balance sheet is an important destination all of us must find our way to. In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Kristin Keffeler. Kristin's family's money story launched when she was in her twenties. Her parents and oldest brother started a company, grew it, took it public and sold it, all within five years. In other words, during the period between starting and graduating from college, her family experienced a series of significant wealth events. As a result, Kristin's money narrative got more complex. She was trying to sort out many things like how did she want to define success? Was her current career path good enough? How should she be allocating time learning to be a steward of the family wealth? Kristin was in a big soup of confusion around identity as she sought to understand who she was as an individual, separate from her family contribution. Kristin, MSM and MAPP, is a thought leader and consultant at the forefront of a global shift in family wealth advising, known as Wealth 3.0. She works with affluent and enterprising families, rising gen, and the professionals who support them. As the founder of the consulting firm illumination360 and the Chief Learning Officer for the Johnson Financial Group, she specializes in human motivation and behavioral change, family dynamics, family governance, rising gen education and development, and intergenerational collaboration. Drawing upon her research and years of private practice advising and coaching the rising generation in affluent and enterprising families, Kristin believes that members of the rising gen are uniquely positioned to create significant impact in the world and uses a lens of strengths to help them—and those who guide them—to ignite their potential. Her recent book, "The Myth of the Silver Spoon: Navigating Family Wealth & Creating an Impactful Life," captures this approach.

She is the author of The Dumb Things Smart People Do With Their Money and her most recent book, The Great Money Reset: Change Your Work, Change Your Wealth, Change Your Life*. In this conversation, Jill and I examine the decision-making process that many of us use when considering advanced degrees or certifications. We discuss some of the common missteps that people make in educational investments and identity three key steps that can help us do better. Plus, we encourage leaders to get clear on their goals and outcomes and alternative ways to fund major educational investments. Key Points Every situation is different. Examining your situation is more helpful than relying on an assumption that all educational investments are wise. Identify the precise skills, knowledge, or credential you hope to gain by going back to school and how your career with benefit. Remember that the cost of tuition does not always reflect the full cost such as lost salary or time out of the workforce. Explore cheaper options if they still archive your overall objectives. A cheaper degree from a less prestigious university may meet 95% of the outcomes you want. Consider how your employer may support your educational investments. We talk a lot about how to build wealth on the More Money Podcast, but what happens when you've finally "made it"? In today's new episode with Kristin Keffeler, author of The Myth of the Silver Spoon, we're taking a look at the other side of money and what problems may arise after you've achieved 1% status. Kristin Keffeler, MSM, MAPP is a human capital coach, family dynamics advisor, consultant, and thought leader at the forefront of today's global shift in wealth advising, Wealth 3.0. She's the founder of Illumination360, in which she specializes in human motivation, behavioural change, and family dynamics, and helps guide affluent and enterprising families, rising gen, and the professionals who support them. Her new book, The Myth of the Silver Spoon, unpacks the hidden traps of inherited wealth and real-life challenges facing those born into affluent families. In today's episode, Kristin shares her story of being a part of a wealthy family and how that impacted her identity and career choices. She also shares what the term "rising gen" means and the most common challenges she helps them face. Kristin also shares why affluent parents need to approach parenting differently and the importance of teaching their kids character-building skills. “We all have a story around money, we all have a relationship to it, and whether it is healthy and conscious and clear or totally submerged in unconscious, is really up to how we were raised, what we absorbed from the messages around us and then how much of our own work we've done around it.” – Kristin Keffeler Connect with Kristin Keffeler: LinkedIn Instagram Facebook Selected links and people mentioned from this episode: Illumination 360 The Myth of the Silver Spoon by Kristin Keffeler The Soul of Money by Lynne Twist Seven Stages of Money Maturity by George Kinder Connect with REIN Canada REIN Canada CEO@reincanada.com REIN Channel Facebook Instagram Twitter [0:42] Patrick introduces his next TEDM guest, Kristin Keffeler. [01:56] Kristin and Patrick get their conversation underway as she unpacks who she supports, why it's necessary and through her research and work what she has found gets harder for wealthy families. [08:07] Dispelling a myth, Kristin discusses the reality for some high-net-worth individuals, or high-income earners, and their relationship with wealth. [10:31] Our “money story” is often embedded in the relationships we observed growing up, and Kristin suggests the work we do around money to gain a healthier relationship with it as adults, is some of the most difficult. [14:47] Kristin observes in the affluent families she works with that often clients either overidentify with their wealth (I am my family's money, I don't know who I would be without it) or underidentify with it (distance themselves, reject that part of their narrative). She advises clients to approach it more like a teeter-totter. Zoom out to understand and recognize the privilege you have, not from guilt but from blessing and figure out your own voice and identity within it. [20:41] Kristin identifies that the work to be done around assessing our belief systems and understanding of money is not unique to the uber wealthy; we all have a relationship to money – healthy or unhealthy. Kristin goes on to discuss the concept of “money clutter” and relays a personal story of how she became aware of it. [28:04] The first thing we need to do in assessing our relationship with money is to pay attention to our overall mindset, the filter through which we take things in. Are we operating from a scarcity mindset or abundance mindset? [29:23] Kristin reminds us that money truly is energy and currency (current-cy). Like a current it can flow to and from us, and our mindfulness around it has an effect. Money wants to be in motion. [32:20] Of the second question we can ask to test our relationship with money, Kristin reframes it from a broad and ambiguous question (what is your relationship to money?) to a deeper embodiment experience. [34:44] Kristin shares what “doing the work” looked like for her to improve her own relationship with money after her husband pointed out the mindset he observed. Books, self awareness, intentionality, and physicality all played a part. [41:43] Building on those fundamentals, Kristin shares another story from her personal life to illustrate her self-observation and development. [44:02] Kristin and Patrick discuss financial dependency in the context of relationship and social constructs. [48:48] Growing up in the same family doesn't always equate to the same experience. Kristin reflects on the experience she had of her family's wealth as the youngest child vs. her older brothers who had a much different lens to view their upbringing. [53:18] Resourceful and independent, Kristin was used to forging her path but at times she felt the weight of her family's financial success as intimidating and a prohibitively high bar to measure up to. Eventually, her desire for larger impact summoned the needed courage to build her own business and the financial rewards as a result. [59:22] Success. Although Kristin could likely find a way to define it for herself in a way that felt go...

We talked about how all parents—especially wealthier ones—can model financial behavior for their kids. She is the author of The Myth of the Silver Spoon: Navigating Family Wealth & Creating an Impactful Life*. In this conversation, Kristin and I discuss a reality that's true for almost every leader: whether we have wealth ourselves, almost all of us interact with wealthy people. We explore some of the myths of wealth to understand the psychological challenges that wealth often brings. Plus, we learn from what works (and doesn't) for wealthy families so that we can have better conversations about wealth in our own families. Key Points While wealth brings resources, it also brings psychological challenges for many people with wealth. More money doesn't equal happiness. Small inheritances can increase happiness, but large ones do not. Many people with wealth find close relationships a bit of a struggle. While our perception may be that the most wealthy are selfish and greedy, more often individuals (especially next generations) tend to under-identify with family wealth. Ground decisions in values that align with a vision of thriving. There's a huge difference in the next generation having a little bit of ownership in a financial event vs. not having any ownership.
