In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Marlis Jansen. Marlis was one of our first guests and shared her money tales in episode number five. She joins us this week to talk about the HEARTS framework she developed for achieving financial wellbeing. Marlis describes financial wellbeing as possessing solid financial skills and deep emotional intelligence about money, so that we can meet our financial responsibilities, reduce stress and live more purposeful, joyful and impactful lives. We go deep into HEARTS in this episode, which is an acronym for each of the components for achieving financial wellbeing. Marlis Jansen is a licensed psychotherapist who is trained in wealth psychology and a sixth-generation member of a family of stewardship. This combination of professional training with lived experience gives her a unique perspective on the nuances and complexities of owning financial wealth. Prior to founding Graddha, Marlis worked for several healthcare startups and spent a decade as a stay at home mom.  As a product developer in the healthcare information technology space, she designed strategies to maximize trust and safety for patients to help them take ownership of their health decisions. Marlis also served as Director of Business Development and Director of Product Development in a couple of health care startups.  Her experience as a mom inspired her to contemplate how we ascribe value to people and work. Marlis holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from Harvard University, a Master of Arts degree in Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies and a Graduate Certificate in Financial Psychology and Behavioral Finance from Creighton University Heider College of Business. She is an active member of the Purposeful Planning Institute, Financial Psychology Institute and the Financial Therapy Association. She serves on the Board of the Stone Age Institute and, since 2009, has served as Vice President of The Springcreek Foundation, her family's private philanthropic foundation. Marlis speaks French well and is proficient in Spanish and Norwegian. She loves to enjoy home cooked family dinners, hike Mt. Tam with her family and dogs, travel in unfamiliar countries and cultures, and stay up late playing board games.

Should you pay all your kids the same, or based on the market? These are the questions family business leaders confront due to the opposing expectations of the family and the business. Hug of War offers new a path forward. When the competing impulses of the family mindset and the business mindset are embraced as a polarity, leaders transcend either-or thinking and craft better solutions that embrace the best of both mindsets.   With stories that take you into the hearts and heads of real-life family business leaders, Hug of War offers  a bridge to greater harmony in your family, greater clarity in your mind, and greater peace in your heart.  LINKS www.legacyonward.com www.legacyonward.com/hug-of-war

This week, I have the pleasure of speaking with Kristin Keffeler, Chief Learning Officer at the Johnson Financial Group. Kristin is a celebrated author of such influential books in our industry as the recently published Wealth 3.0: The Future of Family Wealth Advising, and The Myth of the Silver Spoon: Navigating Family Wealth & Creating an Impactful Life. She is also the Dean of Family Positive Psychology at the Purposeful Planning Institute. Kristin is passionate about the challenges and opportunities facing the rising-gen members of enterprising families, a subject she covers in depth in her influential book, The Myth of the Silver Spoon. She delves into the topic here, especially focusing on how the strengths-based approach can unlock the rising gen's potential for success, happiness, and impact. She also describes the challenges that are potentially holding back rising-gen members and their parents – the things she calls “clutter” in her book – and offers suggestions on how to overcome them. Kristin also talks about the core theses of her other recently released book, Wealth 3.0, which she co-authored with Jim Grubman and Dennis Jaffee. This visionary book has been widely seen as primarily focused on or aimed at the family wealth advisor profession and its impending evolution, however, Kristin talks here about the clients, the families who are served by the advisor community, and the role they too play in the Wealth 3.0 evolution. She describes how family member education, awareness, and expectations of what Wealth 3.0 is and how it should serve them are critical drivers of the coming change. Kristin also offers some practical tips and tools for family members, including parents and the younger generations. She indicates what parents can do to enable a positive strengths-based engagement and to catalyze the evolution of their family and advisor interactions and processes toward the Wealth 3.0 model. She also outlines the opportunities for the younger generation and the role they can play to bring about and drive the positive, strengths-driven Wealth 3.0 approach of engaging with their family, the family enterprise, and the advisor ecosystem that surrounds them. Don't miss this engaging conversation with one of our industry's foremost thinkers and practitioners specializing in the rising gen and their success and well-being.

York to the podcast and asks him to talk a little bit about the subtitle of his latest book: Harnessing the Power of Stewardship to Elevate the World.   [4:21] David played “slug bug” as a kid, he makes a parallel with looking for and finding examples of stewardship in the world.   [5:50] Though we use and hear the word a lot, stewardship is rarely defined. David offers the working definition he came up with in his book as well as the opposite of stewardship: consumerism.   [8:36] Transcendence and investment characterize stewards, David talks about the ill-perceived trait of entitlement and shares his experience in a five-generation vineyard in Verona.   [11:49] Stewards have a unique perspective on the relationship with the past, present, and future. David shares the four key building blocks of stewards.   [13:55] David dives into the notions of equality of opportunity and cost versus value. He also touches on the four Ps: purpose, preparation, perspective, and participation.   [18:35] The insidious problem of snowplow parenting and the problem of perceived entitlement.   [20:11] The three critical questions David poses to help families surmount the biggest issues surrounding wealth transfer.   [25:16] Entrusted is right in the middle between entitlement and enslavement; Steve and David break down how to keep the balance through rights and responsibilities.   [29:04] David's reading recommendations and his advice for advisors.   [32:12] Steve thanks David R. She is the author of The Myth of the Silver Spoon: Navigating Family Wealth & Creating an Impactful Life*. In this conversation, Kristin and I discuss a reality that's true for almost every leader: whether we have wealth ourselves, almost all of us interact with wealthy people. We explore some of the myths of wealth to understand the psychological challenges that wealth often brings. Plus, we learn from what works (and doesn't) for wealthy families so that we can have better conversations about wealth in our own families. Key Points While wealth brings resources, it also brings psychological challenges for many people with wealth. More money doesn't equal happiness. Small inheritances can increase happiness, but large ones do not. Many people with wealth find close relationships a bit of a struggle. While our perception may be that the most wealthy are selfish and greedy, more often individuals (especially next generations) tend to under-identify with family wealth. Ground decisions in values that align with a vision of thriving. There's a huge difference in the next generation having a little bit of ownership in a financial event vs. not having any ownership. In today's episode, I am very humbled and delighted to interview someone whom I both admire and respect, Susan Bradley. Susan led me to a very specific training she created called the Certified Financial Transitionist® (CeFT®).  As I have mentioned in a previous podcast, I was searching for a training that would complete my personal and professional experience.  Susan's training has provided me with scientific theory behind life transitions and in my case, grief. Through Susan's training  I have completed the trifecta of personal experience, professional experience honed with scientific theory to garner tools to help clients with the personal side of money.     Susan is the founder of the Sudden Money® Institute (www.suddenmoney.com), which began almost 22 years ago as a community of practice seeking to better serve their financial planning clients by developing process and tools for the personal side of money and for clients going through transitions. This think tank created the Certified Financial Transitionist® (CeFT®) designation, and a division for training and certification called the Financial Transitionist® Institute. Susan has served on the FPA's National Board of Directors, currently sits on the National Football League's Players Association's Financial Education Advisory Board and serves as the Dean of Transitions for the Council of Deans of the Purposeful Planning Institute. She is seen and heard frequently in the national media, including NBC's Nightly News, CNN, NPR, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. She is the author of Sudden Money: Managing a Financial Windfall (Wiley 2000), and her TEDx Wilmington Women talk is called, “Change launches you into the next great chapter of your life, whether you like it or not.” It can be found here.If you like this episode, please subscribe to be the first to be notified of any upcoming episodes. 66. Thomasina Williams  - Taking Space “There's something about being outside in nature. If you can't go outside, just walk around the floor..movement. It's in our bodies and we've got to somehow get that anxiety and that tension out of our bodies.” Guest Info: Thomasina Williams partners with families to develop leaders. Working at the intersection of family business, family systems, and leadership development, she helps clients build multigenerational legacies of connected and capable families, who are engaged stewards of their resources. Clients have described her as their “high-beams,” lighting the way and guiding them through unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory. An accomplished lawyer and philanthropy strategist, Thomasina is the founder of Sankofa Legacy Advisors. Her signature work gathers and guides Family Enterprise Women ( “The F.E.W."TM) to propel their leadership and legacy to the next level. Regardless of whether they own or work in the business, she helps them live into the fullness of who they are, simplify the complexities of family, and navigate the challenges of combining family and finances.  Thomasina was the first consultant Wells Fargo Private Bank hired to come in-house and play a leadership role in building a new line of business to help its ultra-high net worth clients navigate the family relationships side of wealth. Thomasina goes beyond conventional approaches to help family members individually and collectively understand the relationship systems that drive their ability to sustain wealth and well-being across multiple generations. As a result of working with her, family members begin to see and explore possibilities they had not considered previously, leading to increased self-awareness, stronger family relationships, and reduced family financial risks. Learning about the “shirtsleeves-to-shirtsleeves in three generations” phenomenon, by which 70 to 90 percent of families lose their wealth by the end of the third generation – and realizing that her own family was among these alarming statistics – fuels her passion to help families beat the odds and build enduring legacies. Thomasina is an advisor to advisors within her field. She serves on the advisory board of privately held Purposeful Planning Institute, and on the board of nonprofit Galliard Family Business Advisor Institute. Beyond the field of family advising, she is a member of the advisory board of privately held Enterprising Women magazine, and is in the processing of transitioning from the board of nonprofit Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute to the board of its new for-profit subsidiary. Favorite Quote: "Those to whom much is given, much is required."   R.O.G. Takeaway Tips: Take Space for ourselves and others. Questions we can ask ourselves: Is this something I want to respond to now?   What might be the other influences and broader context?   How can I interpret this situation with generosity?    Give ourselves and others space and the benefit of the doubt. Simply assuring client families that other families struggle provides significant client service. In some circumstances, an advisor who has no particular expertise in conflict management will be able to help the family over a small hurdle. What you will learn in this episode: Why Thomasina chose to move into the field of family dynamics and legacies after moving to New York to pursue her passion in philanthropic work Why there is a global phenomenon where a generation builds wealth, the next generation adapts to the wealth, and then the third generation loses it and has to rebuild Why a lack of communication within a family often leads to a loss of wealth, and how Thomasina's own family is an example of this trend Why society needs leadership right now, and how family businesses can step into that role and demonstrate leadership for their communities Why the information we take in has a drastic impact on our mindset, and why it is important to practice self-care before trying to take care of others Why business owners should be proactive in having important conversations about money and finances with their children to help maintain intergenerational wealth What key steps family business owners can take to help second- and third-generation business leaders prepare themselves to take over the family business Why bringing family members into a family-owned business who are underqualified for their role is a widespread problem Why setting up a “family governance” plan is a good step to take, and why business founders sometimes have trouble letting go of their control Why transition planning is the responsibility of both the outgoing and incoming generational leaders, and why planning should address the needs of both groups Resources: Website: www.sankofalegacyadvisors.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/thomasina-h-williams/ Additional Resources: Website: sharonspano.com Book: thetimemoneybook.com Events
