In the palace of the Duke of Mantua in 1607, composer Claudio Monteverdi presented a ground-breaking “musical fable” to a select group. The music may sound Medieval to our ears, but it was truly modern at the time, and proved itself an early Baroque masterpiece. Four centuries later, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo is still in the repertoire, tugging on the heartstrings of the audience members who long to see the master-musician Orpheus rewarded for a devotion to his beloved Euridice that takes him to the very depths of hell. Claudio Monteverdi rockar! Han var en nyskapare som gick längre och var bättre än alla andra samtida kompositörer när han skrev L'Orfeo världens äldsta opera som fortfarande spelas regelbundet. Tillsammans med Sara Norling, programledare på P2 Live, pratar producenten och programledaren Britta Svanholm Maniette om operans födelse, Monteverdis genialitet, mytens Orfeus och olika klangvärldar i den tidiga operans första, stapplande steg.

L'Orfeo, by Claudio Monteverdi, debuted in 1607 in Mantua Italy, and is considered the first opera ever performed that continues to be performed today. The opera is based on the Greek legend of Orpheus, and tells the story of his descent to Hades and his fruitless attempt to bring his dead bride Eurydice back to the living world. This show was recorded live on July 16, 2017 in the KHOL Studios at the Center for the Arts in Jackson Hole WY.

The Tale of Orpheus will be performed at the Meat Market Theatre in North Melbourne, 7-8 September 2017. In this podcast, Jane Davidson (Artistic Director) and David Greco (Orfeo) discuss Monteverdi, emotions and historical music performances. Monteverdi the radical: Sara Mohr-Pietsch marks the 450th anniversary of the birth of composer Claudio Monteverdi with an investigation into his life and music, exploring what made him a modernist and a radical in his day. Sara visits the three important cities in which he lived: Venice, Mantua and Cremona, to discover what shaped him as man and musician. She interviews performers Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Ottavio Dantone about their personal perspectives on Monteverdi, and academic Ellen Rosand discusses the latest research into his music. Venice: Justine Rapaccioli, Assistant Choral Director at San Marco talks about Monteverdi's prestigious role there, and Ellen Rosand discusses Monteverdi's style in his last operas and how that relates to his earlier music. Mantua: Sara visits the church of Santa Barbara at the Palazzo Ducale, where Monteverdi was employed by Vincenzo Gonzaga, and sees a fascinating document relating to the first performance of L'Orfeo. Cremona: Sara heads for the city of Monteverdi's birth to find the connection in his music with his early life. She visits the Museo del violino, and takes a look at Monteverdi's birth record. Plus John Eliot Gardiner reflects on how Monteverdi's music has been a cornerstone of his career, and gives his thoughts on the freshness and originality of his operas today.

Die Mezzosopranistin arbeitete mit Dirigenten wie Enoch zu Guttenberg, Helmuth Rilling, Armin Jordan, Alicja Mounk, Paul Goodwin und Constantinos Carydis und war Gast u.a. beim Rheingau-Musikfestival, den Internationalen Festwochen in Stuttgart, dem Osterklang Wien und dem International Festival of Music in Bath/England. Martina Koppelstetter ist eine gefragte Interpretin für zeitgenössische Musik. Sie war wiederholt Gast bei der Münchener Biennale für modernes Musiktheater und trat bei Konzerten der Reihe „das neue werk“ des NDR in Hamburg, beim A.Devantgart-Festival und bei „musica viva“ des BR in München auf, sowie bei den Tagen für Neue Musik in Darmstadt und Witten. Sie gastierte am Stadttheater Klagenfurt, Theater Ulm, Tiroler Landestheater und am Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, München, dem Sie von 2003 bis 2007 als Ensemblemitglied angehörte. Dort war sie u.a. als Dorabella, Hänsel, Suzuki, Orlofsky, Nancy und Frau Reich zu hören und arbeitete mit Regisseuren wie Claus Guth, Doris Dörrie und Katharina Wagner. In der Saison 2012/13 debutierte Martina Koppelstetter an der Opéra National de Montpellier mit „What next?“ von E. Carter und „Jetzt“ von Mathis Nitschke, sowie als „Fili“ in Händels „Acis and Galatea“ am Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, Paris, und dem Theater an der Wien. Im Sommer 2015 u.a. erarbeitete sie mit Mathis Nitschke dessen interaktive Kurzoper im öffentlichen Raum „Viola“ in der Titelrolle, im Rahmen des Festivals „pasing by“ in München. Eine Fortsetzung dieses Aufsehen erregenden Konzeptes bildete „Katharina“ im September 2016 im Rahmen von „München dezentral“. (katharina.mathis-nitschke.com). 2017 wird sie in nun die „Maya“ im gleichnamigen Werk des Komponisten verkörpern. Eine enge Zusammenarbeit verbindet die Künstlerin auch mit dem Ensemble für Alte und Neue Musik Così facciamo. Hier war sie als Herzog Polinesso in Händels „Ariodante“ und als Sorceress in „Dido & Aeneas“ von H. Purcell zu hören sowie als Messagiera und Proserpina in „L'Orfeo“ und als Ottavia in „L'incoronazione di Poppea“ von C. Monteverdi. Mit dieser Partie war sie zuletzt 2016 u.a. im Münchener Cuvilliéstheater zu erleben. Zu ihren Einspielungen zählen die „Petite Messe Solennelle“ von Gioacchino Rossini, die „h-moll-Messe“ von Bach, „Der kleine blaue Bergsee“ und „Peter Pan“  von Wilfried Hiller (Deutsche Grammophon) und eine Reihe von Liedaufnahmen mit Werken von R. Schumann, B. Britten, R. Spring und J. Sibelius beim HR und BR. Martina Koppelstetter arbeitet als Gesangspädagogin u.a. beim Münchner Mädchenchor und hat eine Dozentur für Ariengestaltung im Masterstudiengang Musiktheater an der Bayerischen Theaterakademie inne. Behnaz Aram är modeskaparen som skapat kollektioner för Whyred och H&M:s märke & Other Stories.Nu är hon aktuell med sina kläder till Norrlandsoperans uppsättning av Verdis Rigoletto med narren Rigoletto i rött getskinn. Liksom tidigare arbetar hon ihop med ljussättaren Linus Fellbom och regissören Kristofer Steen. De tre har blivit en tight grupp som känner varandra utan och innan efter bland annat La Bohème på Norrlandsoperan och L'Orfeo i på Wermlandsoperan. Vi har en mörk estetik, litet morbid, viktoriansk och så tar vi in komik i det, säger Behnaz om sättet att tänka när trion skapar sina föreställningar.
