Bethany Zill is a familiar face at White Stallion Ranch and her love of ranching is obvious in this edition of the Cowboy Up podcast. Bethany grew up on a ranch in North Dakota and is part of a 5th generation ranch family. Alan Day was raised at the Lazy B Ranch in Arizona with his sister Sandra who went on the become the first female Supreme Court Justice of the United States Sandra Day O'Connor. Bethany created a film about the Lazy B with the help of first-hand stories from Alan Day. Bethany's film has been nominated for 2 awards in the upcoming Tombstone Film Festival because she was able to coax stories out of Alan about growing up on the ranch, cloud seeding and conversations with God. Americans from President Joe Biden on down have paid tribute to the late Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor since her passing on December 1, 2023.  Most of the tributes and memories have understandably focused on her time on the court. Jolyn Young grew up in the “real” northern California—the forgotten area at the tip-top of the state with small towns, extreme poverty, and about 40 miles to the Oregonian mountains. In a childhood defined by a subdivision, she decided she wanted to be a cowboy, and two years out of college, she saw that dream through, taking a job at a Nevada ranch in the search f of horses, cattle, and the wide-open range. And that's where she fell in love. But when a baby-to-be suddenly spun her wild romance into a very practical marriage, and one decrepit ranch trailer home led to the next, Jolyn found her young family desperately seeking stability in a transient lifestyle that moves with the seasons. First with one child to care for, then eventually with three, Jolyn fought profound loneliness, finding comfort in writing and company in her camera. The author of the new memoir “Never Burn Your Moving Boxes,” Jolyn joins Russell and Alan to talk about it all!

 Every October 4th, we celebrate World Animal Day and the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. To honor the animals we love, we are re-running one of our favorite past episodes about pets. If you're an Arizona cowboy, those animals include horses and dogs, as well as a bobcat named Bobby, a hawk named Sylvester, and two javelinas named Sandra and Ann. 

Arizona Highways has been going strong ever since it launched back in 1925. Jeff Kida, the magazine's photography editor, knows what it takes to get each publication just right. During his chat with Russell and Alan, Jeff explains how he chooses photos and how he has had to adapt over the years to the ever-changing landscape of publishing and photography.

The Lazy B ranch sits on two hundred and sixty square miles. Most of it is scrub brush, and it's been in the Day family since 1881. When Harry and Ada Mae Day had their first child, a baby daughter, they travelled two hundred miles to a hospital for the delivery and brought her home to a difficult life. The four-room adobe house had no running water or electricity, and there was no school within driving distance. You would think with such limited resources, the little girl's future might be limited. But Harry and Ada Mae were determined their children would have the best education possible. They subscribed to metropolitan newspapers and magazines, and read to their child hour after hour. When her daughter was four years old, Ada Mae began her on the Calvert method of home-schooling and later saw that she went to the best boarding schools possible. One summer they took their children on a car trip to visit all the state capitals in America west of the Mississippi River. When young Sandra was ready for college, she went to Stanford University, then on to law school, and eventually she became the first woman justice to sit on the Supreme Court of the United States of America. So the word for today is – invest in your children. And be willing to start small, otherwise you won't start at all. Instead of dwelling on what you don't have, use what God's given you and He will bless it. Stand on this Scripture for your children: ‘Though your beginning was small, yet your latter end would increase abundantly.'

Elise’s guest today is Alan Day -- author, owner and operator of the first sanctuary for wild Mustangs, and Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's brother. As a third-generation cattleman and rancher, Alan’s upbringing branded him a cowboy from the day he was born. Growing up on his family’s historic 200,000-acre Lazy B Ranch cemented his love for the land and for horses. And his love for books and a story well-told led him to become the best-selling author that he is today.   Ranching and the cowboy life is — as he says — in his blood. So, after graduating from the University of Arizona, he returned to manage the Lazy B for the next 40 years, along with his two other massive ranches (in Nebraska and South Dakota).   Alan embodies all that is good about the American West's cowboy code — putting in a hard day’s work, not quitting until the job is done, never complaining about the hand you were dealt, being good for your word, being a good steward of the land, and putting your horses’ needs and well-being before your own. Its been a good week! I have plenty to be chuffed about but when it came to doing the pod today I got frustrated and annoyed with my self.  Ive realised a few things about my self that REALLY need to change and today is the first day of doing this!  Im not even sure what todays pod is about but hopefully some of you out there share some of my frustrations and can relate to my feelings... Aug. 30, 2014. Sandra Day O'Connor, H. Alan Day and Lynn Wiese Sneyd appear at the 2014 Library of Congress National Book Festival in Washington, D.C. Speaker Biography: Sandra Day O'Connor made history when she became the first woman on the U.S. Supreme Court in 1981, following her unanimous confirmation by the U.S. Senate. She served on the court until 2006. In her home state of Arizona, O'Connor had been an elected official and the first woman majority leader in the nation as the Republican leader in the Arizona Senate. O'Connor will appear with her brother, H. Alan Day, and his co-author, Lynn Wiese Sneyd, during which she will interview them about their book, "The Horse Lover: A Cowboy's Quest to Save the Wild Mustangs" (Bison Books/University of Nebraska Press). Speaker Biography: In his memoir "The Horse Lover: A Cowboy's Quest to Save the Wild Mustangs" (Bison Books/University of Nebraska Press), H. Alan Day recounts his mission to find a sanctuary for unadoptable wild horses previously warehoused by the Bureau of Land Management. His efforts resulted in the Mustang Meadows Ranch of South Dakota, the first government-sponsored wild-horse sanctuary established in the United States. In "The Horse Lover," Day recollects both his frustrating and adventurous times on the ranch, and he ultimately reveals the valuable lessons of loyalty, perseverance and hope that he gained along the way. Day is the co-author of the best-selling memoir "Lazy B," written with his sister, former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
