CannCon and Alpha Warrior open with the Rick Chow not guilty verdict out of Columbia, South Carolina, where the gas station owner was acquitted in the 2023 shooting death of fourteen year old Cyrus Carmack Belton. Alpha walks through use of force science, why shooting someone in the back is not automatic murder, and why the sheriff's public statement about the suspect not pointing the gun was political pandering. CannCon pushes back hard. The conversation turns into a wider debate about why people hate cops, the complacency that gets officers killed, and Alpha's reminder that the same cops you berate are obligated to risk their lives for you. The middle of the show takes a personal turn. CannCon lost his stepdad Hayden that morning to cancer. He walks through the final days, the hospice questions nobody wants to ask, and the Meet Joe Black scene that keeps replaying in his head. Then the guys return to the Bill Pulte acting DNI move and connect it to Jacqueline Breger's 2023 Arizona Senate testimony on Sinaloa cartel bribes laundered through mortgage fraud, plus the two ex Sinaloa officials who just surrendered at the border.

This week on Breaking Battlegrounds, we dive into the growing power struggle between Congress and the presidency, the future of the filibuster, and one of the most heated debates in sports today. Jason Willick (Washington Post columnist) joins us to break down his latest piece on military funding and war powers. Should Congress use its power of the purse to limit how military force is used? We discuss the constitutional challenges, the failures of the War Powers Act, and why the current system may actually encourage rushed military decisions—especially when it comes to Iran. X: https://x.com/jawillick Washington Post: https://www.washingtonpost.com/people/jason-willick/ In B's Corner, we tackle the tragic Athena Strand case and the broader debate around the death penalty, accountability, and whether justice in clear-cut cases should move faster. We also get into Trump's lasting political impact, the future of the GOP, and early 2028 speculation—including J.D. Vance and Marco Rubio. DHS Shutdown, Iran War & Texas Senate Race w/ Chuck Rocha

Practically Political

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2026 37:48

Can a progressive Democrat win statewide in deep-red Texas? And what happens when bipartisan political strategists debate everything from the DHS shutdown to gas prices during an active war? This episode delivers both. You'll discover the inside story of James Tallarico's surprisingly energetic Texas Senate campaign from the strategist who helped engineer it. Chuck Rocha—the union organizer turned top Democratic consultant who worked on Bernie Sanders' campaign and Ruben Gallego's successful Senate run—breaks down why this race might be different. He reveals internal polling showing Tallarico leading both potential Republican opponents, explains the 30% of Democratic primary voters with no prior Democratic voting history, and discusses the 12% who switched from Republican primaries. But Rocha also addresses the elephant in the room: can a candidate with progressive positions on issues like transgender rights win in conservative Texas? Before the main interview, co-hosts Ashley Davis (Republican strategist) and Dave Spencer (Democratic analyst) spar over the DHS shutdown with spring break approaching and terrorism chatter at post-9/11 highs. Ashley argues both parties share blame for leaving TSA agents and Coast Guard members unpaid over what boils down to whether ICE agents should wear masks. Dave counters that Democrats have repeatedly offered to fund everything except ICE while Republicans hold national security hostage for leverage. The debate gets heated and reveals the frustration both sides feel about government dysfunction. The Iran war discussion proves equally contentious. With gas prices spiking after Israel's strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure—which prompted Iranian retaliation against Gulf state facilities, potentially reducing Qatar's natural gas output by 20% for years—the political implications are massive. Ashley and Dave disagree on whether Trump can extract himself from the conflict before it becomes a political liability, with Dave arguing the President has become "Netanyahu's vice president" and Ashley maintaining he has a few more weeks before voters lose patience. When Chuck Rocha joins, the conversation shifts to what makes a candidate viable in hostile territory. Dave presses him on whether Tallarico needs a "Sister Souljah moment"—a high-profile break with his party on a controversial issue to prove he's not a typical Democrat. Rocha pushes back, arguing that most voters care less about policy positioning than authenticity and whether a candidate understands their daily struggles with bills and gas prices. He explains why the Obama-like enthusiasm around Tallarico in Democratic circles might actually translate to general election success, unlike previous Texas Democratic hopefuls like Beto O'Rourke. You'll also learn about the new campaign infrastructure Democrats are building in Texas, including the role of social media influencer Carlos Eduardo Espina, and why Rocha believes the combination of an off-year election, opposition party energy, economic anxiety, and a uniquely authentic candidate creates the perfect storm for an upset. The discussion covers whether Tallarico faces an easier path against controversial AG Ken Paxton or establishment figure John Cornyn, and how Trump's involvement could change the dynamics entirely. Chuck Rocha is a senior political consultant and founder of Solidarity Strategies, known for his expertise in Latino voter outreach. A former factory worker and union organizer from East Texas who never attended college, Rocha has become one of the Democratic Party's most sought-after strategists. He's the author of "Tío Bernie" and has been instrumental in numerous successful campaigns including Bernie Sanders' presidential runs, Ruben Gallego's Arizona Senate victory, and now James Tallarico's Texas Senate campaign. Key topics covered throughout this episode: • Internal polling and voter demographics in the Texas Senate race • Whether progressive candidates can win in conservative states • The DHS shutdown standoff over ICE policies during spring break • Iran war implications for gas prices and the 2026 midterms • The Sister Souljah moment debate and party positioning • New campaign tactics including social media influencers • Why the 2026 cycle might be different for Texas Democrats • Terrorism threats and intelligence community concerns • The politics of war funding and Trump's $200 billion request Connect with Chuck Rocha on social media and learn more about his work at Solidarity Strategies.

Finding Hope in the Deepest Pain   What happens when the unthinkable becomes your reality—and yet you still choose faith? In today's deeply moving episode, Leslie sits down with Hope Hooton, a courageous mother, advocate, and follower of Jesus whose life changed forever in May 2024 when her two children, Alec and Lydia, were tragically killed during court-ordered visitation with their father. In the midst of unspeakable grief, Hope has chosen to trust God and use her voice to protect other children. Through her testimony, advocacy, and new memoir releasing today, Hope reminds us that even in devastating loss, God's presence can still be found—and that purpose can rise from the deepest pain.   Key Takeaways Recognizing the Red Flags of Abuse Looking back, Hope can now clearly see the warning signs in her marriage—manipulation, gaslighting, emotional control, financial abuse, and power struggles. Abuse rarely starts dramatically; it often unfolds subtly over time. Naming these patterns is the first step toward protecting yourself and your children. When Systems Fail to Protect Children Despite documented domestic violence and severe mental illness, the court granted Hope's husband unsupervised visitation with their young children. This devastating decision highlights a heartbreaking reality many mothers face: the family court system often prioritizes parental rights over child safety. Faith That Holds in the Darkest Night After losing her children, Hope's life as she knew it disappeared overnight. Yet in her grief, she clung tightly to God's presence—spending time in prayer, journaling, and meditating on Scripture. Proverbs 3:5–6 became her lifeline: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Turning Tragedy Into Purpose Hope refused to allow her children's story to end in silence. Through her social media platform Hope In The Pain, she shares encouragement, faith, and the reality of walking through grief with God. She also hosts the Voices Against Filicide Podcast, raising awareness about domestic violence, the abuse cycle, and cases of child homicide across the country. Honoring Alec and Lydia Through Advocacy Hope is now working with Arizona lawmakers to create stronger protections for children in custody cases. Her advocacy is helping bring critical attention to how family courts handle domestic violence and mental illness when making custody decisions.   Resources Mentioned Hope's New Memoir is Available TODAY (March 9): There's Still Hope: A Journey of Adversity, Tragedy, and Unbreakable Faith Arizona Legislation Honoring Alec & Lydia Arizona legislation HB2995 has already passed the Arizona House of Representatives and is now moving forward to the Arizona Senate. This bill, referred to as The Alec and Lydia Act, aims to strengthen protections for children in family court cases by ensuring judges receive training in domestic violence, coercive control, trauma response, and mental illness when making custody decisions. Please join us in praying that this legislation passes the Arizona Senate, helping protect vulnerable children and families across the state. The GOP should be able to field very competitive candidates in Arizona, but Kari Lake is not one of them.Next, they wonder whatever happened to the guy who is apparently still the president.
