This week on Above The Fold, I'm in NYC catching up with my new friend and fellow startup nerd, Adam Simone—co-founder of Leaf Shave and Smoosh. We get into what it really means to build product-first brands and why having strong opinions might actually be a founder's best tool.We talk about his mechanical engineering background and how it led to building a shaving brand that doesn't suck, and why their second brand, Smoosh, turned into a surprise hit with a totally different audience.Adam breaks down the chaos and clarity of launching two brands with one small team, why TikTok turned on them (lol, truly), and how staying product-led keeps the vision clear—even when the market throws curveballs. If you're trying to scale something meaningful, juggle two brands, or just need a reminder that not every decision needs a focus group, this one's for you.Listen now for insights on product development, startup reality checks, and the joy of building weird stuff that works.
Is it possible to find a gap in the market and find your own creative ways to authentically fill it? What are some ways to leverage social media interaction in ways that really build loyal, longterm relationships with your customers? Listen in to hear Adam Simone share the journey Leaf Shave has been on and where they're headed next! “And then Doja Cat Shaved Her Eyebrows”{00:05:18} When two engineers get together and are grumpy about a hole in the market, you get a pretty cool little piece of machinery that is safe to put on your skin and shave with{00:11:18} Adam loves to engage with customers on social, and after customers asked and asked for a specific product to be developed by Leaf, they finally were able to deliver and launched it recently{00:17:05} It's easy to use gimmicks to amp up the metrics of an ad or a technique, but it's important to look at what actually worked and why it did to make sure we don't get stuck using those gimmicks{00:22:07} “Stop chasing the views, stop chasing virality, and just focus on educating. And that has been my recipe,” because that is what drives noticeable impact{00:26:19} When you do something differently, you naturally have to explain and educate your audience, which is a point that is often overlooked{00:30:36} Why Adam has basically shaved every part of his body and how that has helped the company is so many ways{00:36:35} Adam shares about two interesting moments, one with Mr Beast and another with Doja Cat's eyebrows, and which one actually drove more impact to their business{00:40:55} Adam and his team have big plans for more incredible innovation-driven products that will be branching out and launching in the near future (and beyond)Associated Links:Find out more about The Visions Summit at RICE 2023 and make plans to meet us there!Learn more about Adam Simone and Leaf Shave.Have you checked out our YouTube channel yet?Get your copy of Archetypes, our newly published 240-page journal. You've all seen the trend when scrolling through TikTok of, "Share your small business so that it blows up!". We often see this promoting small craft businesses or apparel lines, perhaps services like cosmetologists or custom furniture creators. For eCommerce business owners, the road to TikTok virality may seem less direct. On this episode of Link Up Leaders, Francois and Lisa are speaking with Lauren Schwartz, Founder of The Loft 325, to discuss how to make the most of your social media presence and will outline the three creative mistakes that you MUST avoid! --
Lauren Schwartz from California is a thought leader in creating profitable creative strategies for e-commerce brands. Design professional with over 15 years of experience. Over the last 8 years working in digital marketing. Lauren's passions lie in creating top-performing ad creatives. She has personally led the creative strategy for top brands such as Love Wellness, APL, Colourpop, Our Place, and Leaf Shave. She is obsessed with design and creative strategy, and in her downtime, she enjoys teaching others her profitable creative methodology and focusing on DTC Advertising, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and Pinterest. Here's what we covered on the episode: Lauren's Background + E-commerce Changes Lauren says she's always loved art and the digital side of things, more specifically figuring out shopping behaviors - as paid media became bigger she fell in love with that as well which is how she got into e-commerce space One of Lauren's first digital jobs was working at a company where they made point of sale (POS) systems for restaurants When Lauren first started in the e-commerce space, it was all about figuring out the design of websites and email marketing, and now she says it has changed drastically into a social media digital space where everything is very focus on e-commerce and being on your phone How the design landscape changed from a desktop computer to a tiny little phone screen that you hold all day, so Lauren says how she used to design is way different than how she designs digital advertisements today Lauren explains that she doesn't manage the digital ads, she does the design, creative strategy, and works with paid media buyers to deliver the ads for clients Lauren shares that she doesn't have a specific niche, she works with e-commerce in general who are product based How Lauren has to stay up to date on all the trends happening on each social media platform, which is hard to do and she explains how she has to test a lot of things, and sometimes they don't always work out Lauren has set packages she offers and works off retainers because it's important to her that the works with her clients for a long time so she can really understand their brand and help them grow, while giving them the full support they need Within the last year, Lauren has been able to grow and bring some more people onto her team — she has 3 designers she was able to bring on, as well as her project manager Through the pandemic, a lot of businesses realized they couldn't rely on retail and that they needed to invest in their online space — Lauren says e-commerce is just as important as retail With all the iOS and privacy updates, Lauren explains that people in e-commerce realized that they need to focus their creative because it's really important when you're on the social media platforms Creating User-Generated Content Lauren suggests that her clients give their creators a script because 9/10 times when you give them some talking points, you're going to get back better user-generated content Another important thing to think about Lauren says is getting testimonials because people tend to gravitate towards authentic testimonials vs influencers who are “selling your product” Lauren explains that to her, user-generated content is real people showcasing your product in an authentic way and explains when people are scrolling through their feed they don't want to be served ads so you have to use user-generated content in a way that looks very native to each specific platform How Lauren creates custom thumbnails for user-generated content because that converts better than a random image — she also explains that they give a lot of guidance to their creators when it comes to talking about and shooting the product so it looks native Some brands that Lauren thinks are doing a great job when it comes to being in the online space is Ritual, a vitamin company and Magic Spoon, which is a keto cereal company Connect with Lauren on her website, the loft 325.com or on Instagram and shoot her a DM, she is always willing to answer questions Links mentioned The Loft 325 Connect with Lauren on Instagram Like what you heard? Episode Notes We live in a consumerist society. Our economy operates (and frankly relies) on the fact that all of us are ferocious consumers of products. In this episode, I am sharing with you my top 10 tips to reduce your waste. I've been using these tips during my zero waste journey and has helped a lot to reduce the amount of waste that we create. Let's take just a little step back for those of you that are new to the concept of Zero Waste I've written an entire blog about Zero Waste and explain where the term comes from and how it changes into a movement. That’s the long answer about what is zero-waste the short one is to send Zero Waste to landfill. When it comes to making choices whether you buy this apple or that banana. Whether you use your produce bag or whether you just chuck it in your normal handbag. If you eat a plant-based diet or have meat regularly in your diet. All of those things are really more of a personal choice and I don't think it is my place to judge anyone for the choices they make. As a design professional for over 15 years now, Lauren has personally led the creative strategy for many businesses, including top brands like Love Wellness, APL, Colourpop, Our Place, and Leaf Shave. In this episode, Lauren shared a ton of value in creating profitable ads online. She talks about the importance of a creative strategy, ad campaign testing, and free tools that can help you create ads even with your phone. One rule of thumb she shared today is that you should be able to explain your product to a 5-year old. Are wondering what her other tips are? this week on the Make It Right podcast Adam Hahn, CEO of Leaf Shave leads us through his journey as he brought his alternative to the disposable razor “from idea to manufactured”.
A mechanical engineer by trade, co-founder Adam Simone worked for medical technology companies before bootstrapping his sustainable razor brand, Leaf Shave. After the acquisition of his first company, and a year of product refinement, Adam took his experience creating medical-grade tools to develop the refillable, plastic-free Leaf razor. Leaf Shave’s hero product combines the form factor of a disposable cartridge shaver with the durability of a double-edge safety razor. Adam still works for a surgical tech company but hopes to take Leaf Shave full-time, for now, he’s focused on creating great facial instruments and growing the small consumer brand on its own strength. On this episode, Adam talks about making well-designed tools (3:21). Adam tried to shoehorn a consumable business model — it didn’t work. He shares how he and his co-founder Adam Hahn found value in a focused core product (10:30). Adam talks about building brand loyalty (12:32) and innovating distribution strategy with retailers, like Package Free Shop (20:44). Adam shares why they decided to fulfill in-house and how they found a great overseas manufacturing partner (24:42). Lastly, Adam talks about robots, regulations, and applying conscious consumerism to build the Leaf Shave brand (40:40). On this episode, Adam talks about making well-designed tools (3:36). Adam Simone is the co-founder of Leaf Shave, an online, direct-to-consumer brand that designs & sells modern, beautiful, sustainable shaving razors for men and women. Adam spent the first decade of his career commercializing medical surgical robotics, until his (now cofounder) Adam Hahn approached him at his desk one day and proposed an idea that would aim to revolutionize the shaving industry. The two Adams then ran a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2016, and fully launched in 2018. www.leafshave.com
Our guest today is the founder of Leaf Shave, a company that is changing the way people get a great shave at the best value. Crazy birds, without any further ado, I would like to welcome Adam Simone. Episode Highlights[01:18] How did your sustainable journey start? [02:50] There is an amazing organisation called Leah Lizarondo (https://www.linkedin.com/in/leahlizarondo/) and she has built a network backed by technology and the goodness of people that has rescued more than 4 million pounds of food, and they do this by cutting off perfectly good food that would end up uneaten and in landfill and connecting them with people in need of food. [03:22] We won’t stop until we have replaced every disposable plastic consuming razor on earth with a Leaf razor. [04:51] The history of shaving is quite interesting it dates back thousands of years to when early humans were using tools and shells and even things like sharp teeth to remove hair from their head and face. It is not a new invention. [05:11] Double edge razors which are what many today would kind of consider classic shaving tools that perhaps your grandfather used or maybe you have dabbled with in your sustainability journey. Those were invested and patterned more than a hundred years ago by and some people don’t know this but by King Camp Gillette. [06:34] What modern razors brought to the table over safety razors is a comfortable easy shave with multiple blades and a pivoting head. What we lost was the quality and the durability of materials. [11:56] We want that who when someone holds it, because it is a high-quality tool and something that I think people should be happy to own. because it is quality and it will last. [12:13] It has a lifetime warranty. If you have any issue ever drop us a note. [12:20] To keep our customers happy, we are learning a lot. We are still very young we have only been commercially available for about six- month ones as of the recording here, but we are in our next production of razors right now and we continue to learn and improve and listen to our customers. [13:14] We have got three more finishes coming in our next production run. [13:50] Maybe like four years ago I bought a pack of hundred of them for $11 and I am still using that pack.
