This week on Above The Fold, I'm in NYC catching up with my new friend and fellow startup nerd, Adam Simone—co-founder of Leaf Shave and Smoosh. We get into what it really means to build product-first brands and why having strong opinions might actually be a founder's best tool.We talk about his mechanical engineering background and how it led to building a shaving brand that doesn't suck, and why their second brand, Smoosh, turned into a surprise hit with a totally different audience.Adam breaks down the chaos and clarity of launching two brands with one small team, why TikTok turned on them (lol, truly), and how staying product-led keeps the vision clear—even when the market throws curveballs. If you're trying to scale something meaningful, juggle two brands, or just need a reminder that not every decision needs a focus group, this one's for you.Listen now for insights on product development, startup reality checks, and the joy of building weird stuff that works.

Lusine - “Dreaming (feat. Asy Saavedra)" from the 2023 album Long Light on Ghostly International Records Seattle-based producer Jeff McIlwain — aka Lusine — returns with his ninth full-length, Long Light. The album takes its title from a lyric in the title track, written by collaborator Benoît Pioulard: "long light signaling the fall again," reflective of the artist's now 20-year career. “Music making is a struggle and you have to have a ton of patience,” McIlwain shares in a press statement. He adds, “There's this sort of paranoia where you don't know what is real, it's an age of high anxiety and there are all these distractions. It's like a fun house mirror situation.” Across the eleven tracks on the album, McIlwain's signature loops are as mesmerizing as ever. The LP features guest appearances from Sarah Jaffe, longtime collaborator Vilja Larjosto, the aforementioned Pioulard, and on today's Song of the Day, Asy Saavedra of Chaos Chaos and formerly Smoosh. [RECIPE IN SHOW NOTES] When the cold sets in, it's not a bad idea to load up on garlic. First up, while it's cooking it makes your house smell AMAZING, and second, it wards off colds and vampires! It's also very good cooled and used as a condiment. I took some on a winter picnic the other day and we stuffed the tomatoes into sourdough baguette with ham and cheese. Delicious, easy, made me look like a genius cook! Leftovers will last for DAYS in the fridge. Want more food tips? Check out the 5 Minute Food Fix Instagram. Recipe Ingredients 2 x punnets cherry tomatoes, washed 4-8 whole cloves of garlic 1-2 cups olive oil (depending on the size of your ramekins) optional: A snip of thyme, a bay leaf, oregano or rosemary To serve: Sourdough Toast Ricotta or feta Method METHOD: Fill a ramekin with cherry tomatoes and 1 -2 cloves of unpeeled garlic. A hearty snip of thyme from the garden, or a bay leaf, or some oregano, rosemary. Pour over enough olive oil to cover the tomatoes. Set the ramekins on a tray and then in a pre-heated oven 110-130C for 1 hour+. Serve slightly cooled by smooshing the garlic and tomatoes onto sourdough toast. Simon suggests ricotta cheese but in the pic, I used fetta. Use the leftover cooking oil in salad dressing or pour it over cauliflower florets prior to roasting. Your garlic tomato smoosh will last ages in the fridge if covered in the oil and can be used on pasta, is salads or on crackers. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

[RECIPE IN SHOW NOTES] Here's my amazing recipe for Banana and Coconut muffins! Want more food tips? Check out the 5 Minute Food Fix Instagram. Ingredients 220g sugar 1/2 tsp baking powder 4 manky as heck bananas 1/2 tsp salt 200ml oil (eg., grapeseed or coconut oil) 150ml milk 1 egg 2 tsp vanilla 1/4 cup desiccated coconut optional cinnamon or nutmeg 380g SR flour Method Line 2 x 6-hole muffin trays with cupcake patties. Pre-heat your oven to 180C. Put ALL the ingredients below (except the flour and coconut) into the food processor and whizz until smooth. In a separate bowl, sift the flour. If you don't like lumps of banana (I quite like them but lumps make my kids gag), pour the wet mixture through the sieve, into the flour. Smoosh the last dreggy bits through. Add the coconut to the bowl. Mix everything with a large metal spoon until just combined. Divvy it all up into the cupcake patties. (The whole mix should fit into 12 muffins.) Bake for 25 - 30 mins. Allow to cool before storing them in a sealed, ziploc bag in the freezer. Pull out as needed (eg, when preparing school lunches of a morning!) 25 - 30 mins, 180C. Jocelyn and Ryan are back to close out the summer season with a quick look ahead at fall video game releases (even if Ryan blanked on most of them). Moving into what we're playing, Jocelyn played Cult of the Lamb, while Ryan returns to 2006 with the Destroy All Humans 2 remake. For video game news, the next Dark Pictures Anthology game will be out in November, the PlayStation 5 will be seeing a price increase in certain regions (but Microsoft and Nintendo won't be, for now), and sadly Netflix has cancelled their Resident Evil series.

Support us on Kofi! (https://ko-fi.com/C0C86NYJW) Have you ever wondered if it's worth breaking the internet? No? Well, today's guest has! Tune in as we chat with Yulia Startsev, a software engineer for Mozilla, and a compiler for JavaScript. We dive into the conversation with who uses semi-colons (and when and why), followed by an anecdote from Yulia about Smoosh and the potential to break the internet. Yulia talks us through the considerations when naming a new JavaScript function, and the promising changes around immutability. We also learn how to remember the difference between the splice and slice functions, and why pattern matching is such an exciting prospect. We hear about the four stages of deciding to change JavaScript, why most programming languages are written in English, and why certain popular functions like caller and colleague were deprecated. We wrap up the episode with a summary of what the array by group function does, who funds the updates to JavaScript, and what Yulia's fantasy changes to the web would be! So, for all this and so much more, tune in today. Key Points From This Episode: Welcome to today's guest, Yulia Startsev, an engineer at Mozilla and compiler for JavaScript. A discussion around semicolons and who's pro and who's against (and who's neither!). Why it's important not to break the internet: a funny anecdote about SmooshGate. The considerations to take into account when naming a function. What's coming to JavaScript: Immutability. Why Tuples are such an exciting prospect and their role in wrap-around vs incomplete infinite grids. How the team understands the difference between splicing and slicing. How Yulia and the JavaScript team come up with new names. The idea behind pattern matching, and how it will reduce the cognitive load on developers. The four stages of deciding to accept a change to JavaScript. Why most programming languages are written in English. Why the caller and colleague functions were deprecated. Array by group: what it is, why it's interesting, and the readability issues it is facing. Things the team would love to add to or change in JavaScript. When Yulia is willing to break the web. Who funds the updates and changes to JavaScript. Yulia's fantasy changes to JavaScript, and why these are far in the future. Where you can find out more about Yulia! Today's picks: from board games to body pillows to YouTube essayists. Put this episode on in bed to help ward off the taxman creeping toward you underneath your blankets! Jaymee and Daren discuss the oddity of referring to crime documentaries as "entertainment", whether or not you can bypass karma, and the mechanics of manifesting a life specific to your interests. Jaymee describes how worrying is like saying to the Universe "Give me lack!", and shares how many times he vividly imagines himself dying each day. Daren argues with an imaginary vegan in his mind, and at the same time falls deeper in love (on air) with the idea of bringing a dog into his life. *Help support the show at: www.patreon.com/mysticalcynical *Leave us a 2 minute voicemail at: 888-4A-CYNIC / (888) 422-9642*Opening music by J. Welcome to season 2 episode 4 of Angel! Bethany, a woman on the run, meets up with the gang after squishing a few bastards with a dumpster. She does that with her mind, which is a great way to squish bastards via dumpster. But, can we connect with her enough to help keep her safe? Does she even need our help? Hopefully Angel can crack the case before a non-bastard ends up squished. Thanks for listening!

“Creating a morning routine can help anyone .. waking up a little bit earlier in the morning, it doesn't have to be 06:00 obviously it depends on what commute you've got but just having some time for yourself and moving in the morning before you go off and start your day is so important, and can change the trajectory of your day.” Beth Carr aka Flourish with Fig is back for a special long form episode of The Practice of Health! Definitely have a listen to her experiences on food cravings on episode 15 of the podcast. Fig is a Holistic Health Coach and life enthusiast! Like me, she is in her final few months of study at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, and since we can begin coaching 6 months in, has now started working with clients to support and encourage sustainable changes towards a happier and healthier life. Her mission is to educate, motivate and inspire people to live fuller and better on a daily basis by helping uncover what nourishes and energises you bio-individually. Fig believes health is a personal, ever-changing journey to be enjoyed, not a destination to be reached, and wants to empower you to have fun exploring your own fascinating body and mind as we evolve. Fig has been on a health journey of her own and I'm excited to have her share her own experiences in this podcast. We dive deep into cold water swimming, building positive habits in the morning, the contraceptive pill, and how Beth found her calling to become a health coach. Make a donation to Unity Center of Norwalk "Inspect What You Expect" Rev. Shawn Moninger @ Unity Center of Norwalk CT (5/30/21) You can see this talk and others on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/c/UnityCenterNorwalk Last week's message from Rev. Shawn "Change Happens…when we commit to a spiritual practice." Hey U-nity, When we commit to a spiritual practice, lots of changes take place. Some are subtle and some are like dynamite going off without your permission. New Thought writer Emilie Cady (Lessons In Truth) wrote of an experience we call “chemicalization.” Chemicalization is what happens when we introduce new ideas to old ways of thinking. Often our lives go SMOOSH in one way or another. What is the spiritual practice you have committed to? Have you committed to a life where you actually desire to hear the Voice of Spirit guiding you in thoughts of Love and Intelligence? Or have you made the illusion of a spiritual commitment, but are still busy telling yourself and God what is wrong with you and the rest of the world that is revolving around you? If you have done the second, are you puzzled as to why life is still so hard? That may sound judgmental, but I know from personal experience the difference between the two and I know that when I truly desire my relationship with God and as a God-being my life is easier. When I assume that God is on my side and I am willing to follow the guidance for love, forgiveness, peace and joy, then I am confident that Good is present no matter what seems to be going on. Now, sometimes, when I make that commitment to Love, everything unlike it appears. People may become more erratic and unkind than before. Suddenly there is a shortage of money. My face breaks out. My hair falls out. I gain weight. People I love get sick and people I love die. Or I get diagnosed with illness. Or, the person I hated the most wins the lottery. They fall in love. People I have held judgments towards suddenly seem to be happy when they don't deserve to be happy…especially since I'm the one who made the spiritual commitment! Maintain your spiritual commitment and assume you will begin to see God active and present everywhere, including in places you least expected it. (Like in the people you don't care for.) You will begin to see how your old judgments can't keep God's good away from anyone. When we commit, or recommit, to a full-on spiritual practice change is going to happen and we must assume that this change is Good and “God is active and present in my own and everyone's life.” Become glad that you are suddenly awake and noticing how life is active and an event that affects everyone for Good. Spiritual commitment doesn't mean that life isn't going to happen; it means that we will know what to do with it when it does. Let's give thanks that we in Unity are making this spiritual commitment together. We're all doing it to different degrees, but we are doing it. We have learned that it is safe to do it because God isn't a whimsical old man, but a loving, intelligent presence, active and present in our mind and in our life. Hold on to that thought and make the full commitment so that the full change takes place. It is a change that is Good. Let's affirm together, “The Superconscious Mind is awake in me now!” Grateful for the change, Rev. Shawn

September saw the release of the Trover Saves The Universe soundtrack. The 31 instrumental tracks were composed for the 2019 game from Rick & Morty co-creator, Justin Roiland. The work finds composer Asy Saavedra outside of her comfort zone. Since 2012, she’s been one-half of the sibling duo, Chaos Chaos — though the band’s work actually stretches back another dozen year. The pair released their first single as Smoosh in 2000 when the sisters were, quite literally, children. Saavedra joins us to discuss two decades of making music, art during COVID and the importance new creative pursuits.

Original release date: 12/21/12 Original Episode notes: You likely remember Asy and Chloe Saavedra as Smoosh - two very young and ridiculously talented girls who played with nearly everyone (Pearl Jam, Death Cab, Cat Power, Eels, Bloc Party, you name it) and even appeared on Jimmy Kimmel. Just imagine the behind-the-scenes workings of a family forced into the crazy, late night, booze-fueled and chaotic world of professional touring musicians. Listen and find out about the challenges of learning who famous people are (they didn't know if the singer of Pearl Jam was Eddie Vedder or Eddie Murphy). Find out about the perils of putting fake gum on E's keyboard (is he really as grumpy as people say?). Learn about the difficulties of doing homework on the road, and about sleeping in tents backstage before late shows that were past their bedtime. But, that is the past. We also talk about their recent reinvention as Chaos Chaos, and the impetus behind their new direction. This podcast features music from Chaos Chaos's fantastic debut EP, "S."

166: Blowing It Out Three's company too. It's just the three of us this week, but that doesn't stop us from talking about some great games. Stephen opens with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the 3DS, and man, is it a stinker. Considering the last TMNT game he played was on the SNES, I don't think he had high hopes, but still, it's a title you want to avoid unless you're looking for some laughs or you're a masochist. Then there's Brian, who finished up God of War, but he isn't really to talk spoilers yet until our spoilercast. So, keep a look out for that. Otherwise, he had a bunch of mobile games. Four to be exact: Peak, Smoosh!, Retro Highway, and The Line Zen. I'd describe them, but you'd be better off listening and hearing him do it. All sound good. With Glen Gabriel and Matt Kozar from Breweries in PA Back again in the Beer Busters Podcast Basement, we sat down with Glen and Matt from Breweries in PA, an online resource for exploring the world of craft beer in Pennsylvania. We talked about the impetus for creating Breweries in PA, how it’s changed and grown and where it’s headed in the future. Dan delivered the news, including the much-anticipated annual list of the top 50 breweries of 2016 in the US from the Brewers Association. In Happy Fun Time we invoked the spirit of Bob Barker in The Beer Seller, and Steph handed over the reigns to Rich in a very special edition of Know Your Beers all about how to keep your DD happy. Through it all, we drank a not insignificant amount of beers from across the great state of Pennsylvania.

Once you have your tasks divided out by type, then it’s time to find new pockets of time to accomplish your to-do list! Here are 10 ways I have been able to find more time in the last 10 years: Watch less TV. Limit my time on social media. Turn off my phone notifications. Shorten the amount of time I spend straightening up in the morning. Smoosh household tasks together. Skip household tasks all together on one day each week. Get up early or stay up late. Hire help and use that time on your focused work. Trade a day with a friend or use dates to knock out to-do's. Work faster and accept that done is better than perfect. Listen to this week’s podcast to hear how I did – or didn’t - use each of these strategies in different phases of my life. For all links to all the posts in the productivity series go here:

ast week on SMI Radio, we featured a fun conversation and music from Daydream Vacation, with David Einmo (Head Like A Kite) and Asy Saavedra. Asy spoke briefly about her other project, Chaos Chaos (formerly Smoosh), which involves her sister Chloe. Asy flew into town to perform with Daydream Vacation at The Vera Project this past Friday, and The Anchor in Everett the following night. The next night, Chaos Chaos played a show at The Crocodile. and also appeared for a KEXP session. On this week’s episode of SMI Radio, we take you backstage at The Vera Project for a conversation with Asy and Chloe. The two sisters make their home in Brooklyn, New York, but definitely consider Seattle their other home. They talk about the distinctions between their former project, Smoosh, and how it evolved into Chaos Chaos. David Einmo joins the conversation later on to talk about the new track he’s producing for Chaos Chaos while they’re in town. Also, Asy and Chloe reveal how Hurricane Sandy directly impacted them. In addition, we feature selected tracks from their debut EP. In the second half of the show, you get a triple shot of Christmas spirit from The HoHoHos, Brent Amaker and The Rodeo and Fitz and The Tantrums. We finish the show off with the brand new single from the forthcoming Ben Union record, This Blessed Union Volume II. (Ben Union will play their record release show on January 12th at The Crocodile.)
In this week’s episode of SMI Radio, Dave Einmo visits the studio and we talk via Skype with Asy, who resides in Brooklyn, for a revealing conversation with these two talented artists. Dave and Asy tell the story of how they formed their special musical partnership and their high-functioning bio-coastal collaboration, which results in some infectious ear candy. We also discuss what goes in to making some of their artsy and fun videos (check out some of them here) In addition, you will hear some tracks, including their most recent single, The Mirage, off of their most recent effort, Dare Seize The Fire. Seven Dials is a young talented and creative power trio made up of three siblings – also at the Vera Project this Friday. In the second half of this week’s show, catch the interesting backstage interview with 14-year-old Mia Natas (lead vocals, guitar), Darius Natas (bass, backing vocals) and Damien Natas (drums, piano).
