ColourPop's Vivian Weng talks omnichannel evolution — plus, Walmart tests beauty bars and clinical testing gains steam

Few beauty brands have had an evolution quite like Southern California-based ColourPop cosmetics (20:50).  Launched in 2014 at the height of the DTC era, the brand once released around 40 collections per year. “That's how consumers were shopping,” Vivian Weng, ColourPop brand president, told Glossy. “For a number of years, consumers were looking for the latest launch … and looking to get their hands on limited quantities of something that was very, very specific and timely.”  Flash forward to its eleventh birthday this month and things look very different. “[Beauty shoppers] are looking for newness, but in a different way,” Weng said. “The consumer has evolved, and we're trying to evolve with that community.”  So far, ColourPop's omnichannel evolution has become a case study for formerly-DTC brands: The brand launched into Ulta Beauty in 2018, then every Target store in 2023, and has cut its annual launches in half. “Especially post-Covid, consumers were starting to get fatigued with so many launches,” Weng said. “It felt very cluttered and noisy, and they were looking for more core, hero products.”  But hero need not mean boring: ColourPop's top seller in Target is a $9 body glitter gel ,and its super-pigmented $7 Super Shock pressed eyeshadow is the retail's No. 6 top eyeshadow, Weng told Glossy. The latter is also the first product the company ever made and continues to be its bestseller.  “We like to say that ColourPop is an overnight success story 70 years in the making,” Weng said. That is, the brand was born in Spatz Labs, a family-owned contract manufacturer in Oxnard, California.  ColourPop co-founders Laura and John Nelson, whose father started Spatz Labs decades before, grew up watching the top cosmetics in the country being quietly made in their family's factory. Seed Beauty, the parent company of ColourPop, is also well-known for being the original manufacturer of Kylie Cosmetics' first Lip Kit. However, due to the demand of ColourPop, Weng told Glossy that Spatz Labs no longer contracts for the industry. Weng joined the company in 2022. Previously, she held executive roles at Anastasia Beverly Hills and L'Oréal; she got her start at Goldman Sachs and McKinsey & Co. In today's episode, Weng discusses the brand's strategic evolution, the challenges along the way and the future of the prolific beauty brand. But first in today's episode, hosts Lexy Lebsack and Sara Spruch-Feiner discuss the top headlines of the week. This includes Walmart's plan to test new high-touch beauty bars in 40 stores, the growing marketing opportunity at Formula 1 events, the rise in clinical testing among leading supplement brands and MET Gala highlights.

Marius shares insights on how eCommerce businesses can leverage live chat and chatbots to improve their customer experience, drive sales, and increase customer loyalty. The conversation starts with Marius discussing how Tidio's live chat and chatbot software can help eCommerce businesses improve their customer service by freeing up time for their customer support teams. This, in turn, allows them to focus on more complex queries and increase customer satisfaction. Marius also highlights how Tidio's Magic Wand feature can normalize any customer service tone of voice, which is especially helpful for companies with offshore resources. The discussion then moves on to how live chat can help with lead generation. Marius shares how Tidio's support team has been able to identify leads and send them to the sales team, resulting in increased sales. He also emphasizes that live chat is one of the most underrated customer acquisition channels and that eCommerce brands should not delay instant gratification for customers who are ready to buy. Kunle then asks Marius for his advice on how eCommerce brands can navigate growth through customer success in 2023. Marius recommends that companies focus on turning high-intent traffic into buyers by triggering the right chatbot at the right time. He notes that it's not about bringing more people to your website, but rather bringing the right people and leveraging technology in the right way to get the job done. Overall, this episode is a must-listen for eCommerce business owners and marketers who want to improve their customer service, increase sales, and build customer loyalty. The company was incubated in an accelerator program and took around four months to go to market. The interview also covers Treyd's expansion plans, its target market, and how it differentiates itself from other Fintech startups in the same space. Peter also discusses the interest rates charged by Treyd and how they vary depending on the individual customer's needs and financial standing.  And also cover Treyd's supplier vetting process, which includes KYC and background checks on every supplier, as well as a quality inspection option for new suppliers.  Finally, they emphasize the importance of optimizing cash conversion cycles for eCommerce brands, as it determines how fast they can grow. In terms of industry trends, the CEO notes that the global supply chain is starting to improve after a challenging period, and having multiple channels (D2C and wholesale) is proving to be beneficial for many eCommerce brands.----------- SPONSORS: This episode is brought to you by: Klaviyo This episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses. He shares that it was self-discipline and a positive mindset that paved the way for him. Being able to recognize his mistakes and learn from other successful people's mistakes led him to write his book, Just Keep Swimming. It's a lesson-filled and inspiring episode as you'd hear Kunle and Jim talk about Jim's journey to success, efficient resource allocation, and distribution, getting your CPG brand or FMCG noticed, and tips on establishing a capital stack for entrepreneurs. Chopping cotton at the age of 14, a truck with a loud bassy noise piqued his curiosity until it became his hobby. After a nudge from the universe, Johnathan created Down4Sound, a company with a $20 million annual revenue. On today's episode, Kunle is joined by Jordan Schindler, Founder & CEO of Nufabrx, an innovative healthwear that combines medicine and garments that solve patient compliance. It all started with a pillowcase problem. Jordan Schindler was having issues with his skin and had tried creams, pills, etc. to no avail. His dermatologist recommended that he wash his pillowcases 2 to 3 times a week. For Jordan and most people, that would not be doable. Thinking of how to create a solution to his personal problem, Nufabrx was conceptualized. Fabrics are around us and are one of the most unnoticed but affect our day-to-day living. We wear them, sit or sleep on them, and rub them on our bodies. Nufabrx's innovation created a one-stop shop for our garments and medicine as they create healthwear products that are researched, patented, and created with the best combination of scientific research, customer feedback, and data.  This episode is especially exciting as you'd hear Kunle and Jordan talk about product innovation that will interest not only entrepreneurs but consumers themselves. This is an amazing episode for consumer brands to learn about risk reduction, product research and development, and most importantly, creating better products through customer and expert feedback. ----------- SPONSORS: This episode is brought to you by:  Wayflyer As you continue to grow your eCommerce business, access to growth capital will increasingly play a significant role in achieving and surpassing your financial and social goals. Why should you give up equity or pay high interest rates to grow your business? There is a new way to access growth capital that transforms eCommerce businesses. Wayflyer has shaken the way eCommerce operators access working capital. With a dedication to only DTC eCommerce businesses, Wayflyer will fund you on a fairer “fund as you grow” model, meaning if your sales slow down, so does the amount you transfer back.. There is just a simple fee and the funds you need to grow are deposited to your account instantly. It's worth checking out – Wayflyer.com Klaviyo  This episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses. Alongside those negative intricacies, many brands have cracked the code of influencer marketing and skyrocketed their growth. In 2021, he again sat with Kunle to discuss the changes in the influencer market, and that it is no longer the elephant in the room as it used to be. It's 2022 and it's Cody Wittick's turn to sit down with Kunle and share Kynship's philosophies on seeding and the intricacies of influencer marketing post-pandemic. He also emphasizes how influencer marketing is just like any other marketing tool while adding human-to-human interactions in a digital age.  Cody discloses Kynship's philosophies on seeding and mass seeding especially when it comes to high-ticket items as well as how they work with the principle of giving and not asking. He also dives into the principle of repurposing content across platforms and how the unboxing experience can be a way to convey a brand's story without a creative brief.
