Can we learn from elite and professional swimmers in our sport? I believe we can! And today's guest on Torpedo Swimtalk Podcast shares many insights from that very vantage point. As Janelle Elford, she shared in the dominance of Australian middle distance freestyler's of the late 80's and early 90's, culminating in a gold, silver and bronze medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland. As Janelle Pallister, she coaches alongside Michael Bohl on the Gold Coast working with the high performance swimmers from Griffith University - the likes of Emma McKeon, Kaylee McKeown and Mack Horton to name a few - and is currently on the Swimming Australia coaching team in Birmingham for these Commonwealth Games. She is also mother and coach of up and coming Australian swimmer Lani Pallister, who scored a bronze in the 1500m in Budapest last month. So as you can see, Janelle has a truckload of experience to share with us from a swimming and coaching point of view. She is humble, down to earth and I have a feeling the swimmers she works with admire her perspective.Click on the link to connect with Janelle:InstagramFacebookLinkedInClick on the link to connect with Torpedo Swimtalk:WebsiteFacebookInstagramLinkedInNewsletterLeave us a review

I sat down with Olympic champion and distance machine, Mack Horton. Mack is one of the most relaxed guys I've had the pleasure of talking to, often cracking jokes and laughing throughout the interview. He's also able to laugh at himself quite a bit, admitting where he's made mistakes during his long swimming journey. We dissect and discuss and myriad of topics, including preparing for the 2016 Olympic Games (and his subsequent victory in the 400m free), his thoughts on ISL, distance training with Gregorio Paltrinieri, why he won't be swimming the 1500 competitively anymore, and his reaction to Sun Yang getting handed an 8-year doping suspension. The Tokyo Olympics were scheduled to open last week before the pandemic pushed them back to next year. Australian Olympic Swimming champion Mack Horton would've been racing this week, defending his 400m Gold medal from Rio. It would also have been the first Olympics without a Sun Yang drug cloud hanging over it after the Chinese swimmer was banned for eight years after tampering with a drug test. He joins us on today's show as our very special guest. In today's news headlines: Three-week-old baby infected with coronavirus in Melbourne NICU cluster Top lawmakers refuse to #RaiseTheAge Black Lives Matter protesters say they'll cancel today's rally – on one condition The ACCC's world-first case against Google In today's Briefing we ask Mack Horton: How time out of the water was harder than the postponement of the Olympics for him? What was it like not having a pool to train in during lockdown? What's the new sport he's fallen in love with? What is the physical and psychological impacts of not training? How different the Olympics might look in 2021 in a pandemic world? What was his podium protest really about at the Rio Games? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
