What does it actually take to perform at the highest level - not just once, but across a career? Luke Darcy sits down with Cate Campbell, four-time Olympic gold medallist and one of the most respected voices in Australian sport. Cate doesn't just talk about the wins. She reflects on the dream she and her sister Bronte cooked up as children in Malawi, the surreal experience of becoming an Olympian at 16, and what it meant to carry the Australian flag at Tokyo. But she also goes somewhere far more honest - into the parts of elite sport that rarely make the highlight reel: identity, failure, body image, team culture, and what it means to figure out who you are when the sport that shaped you is finally over. Cate also shares what real resilience looks like, why the most powerful shift in Swimming Australia was moving from valuing performance to valuing people, and the three pieces of advice she'd give any young person chasing a dream. Cate and Bronte recently launched their podcast, Campbells and Co. Check it out here. We are privileged to have Cate as part of our Aleda Connect community. In this episode, we talk to Cate Campbell. Australian Dolphin number 665 debuted at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 at the tender age of 16. The teenager won two bronze medals at those games, and that was only the beginning. In her 16-year career in the pool, Campbell won eight Olympic medals – four of them gold – and breaking seven world records (her record for the 100-metre short-course freestyle still stands). The 33-year-old retired last year, and has since gone on to explore new fields including commentary and coaching – as well as opening up in a very brave and vulnerable way about the loneliness and depression she dealt with throughout her career. Now a mental health campaigner, Campbell is currently learning how to man the phones as a Lifeline crisis counsellor. She speaks to Good Weekend senior writer Konrad Marshall.Lifeline: 13 11 14See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Cate Campbell competed as part of the Australian swimming team at four consecutive Olympics and has a haul of eight medals (four of them gold) to show for it. But this time around, she's at the Paris Games fulfilling a very different role. On this episode of Something To Talk About, Cate joins host Sarrah Le Marquand poolside from Paris to talk about the bittersweet experience of shifting from athlete to commentator, and how her experience as an Olympic athlete gives her a unique appreciation for the hard work on display. Cate lays out why she believes the gender parity on display at the 2024 Games will inspire a new generation of athletes – both men and women – and shares her very personal and unique perspective on that race between Mollie O'Callaghan and Ariarne Titmus. She opens up about the bittersweet feelings she has about missing out on the competition this year, the inspiration she draws from Australia's female athletes – who are currently leading the country's medal tally – and her realisation that watching from the sidelines is a tough gig: “This spectating business is hard.” Cate also discusses her plans for the future post-retirement, and why they're likely to involve the 2032 Olympics in her home state of Queensland. Cate Campbell is part of the Nine Network's Olympic commentary team. You can find more from Cate Campbell at @cate_campbell. The Olympics sparked several replays of an Australian swimmer, Cate Campbell, being interviewed on what I think was an Australian TV news show. In a prior competition, she had beaten out the Americans for the gold medal. The interviewer asked her what it was like. She ranted on about how glorious it was because she detested the Americans using a cowbell to motivate the team and hated the chant of the fans, “USA, USA, USA,” which she mimicked in a sarcastic tone. Let me repeat: her team won. She was a sore winner. If you're a world-class athlete and you can't take the pressure of people rooting against you in favor of their teams or motivational techniques used to un-nerve the opposition, maybe you have some serious esteem problems. If you don't want to endure the pressure of the limelight, don't walk into it. I've been to Australia 19 times, I have friends and clients there, and I find Australians to be “in touch,” personable, and have a great sense of humor. It's when we take ourselves too seriously when we feel we shouldn't have to be subjected to boisterous fans, that our fragile egos are exposed. The same day the interview was first aired, the Australian women won the 4X100 meter relay, and the American men won their 4X100 meter relay. The Australians and Americans at the pool congratulated each other in good sportsmanship. So here's to you Cate: Bong, Bong, Bong, Bong…..
