The weather outside is getting frightful, but the fire is getting oh so delightful...Or that's how these show notes would have started if we actually recorded a holiday episode. Instead, we recorded an episode about Made-For-TV-Movies and what it would be like if we made those into video games. Just to be clear, no one picked the Made-For-TV-Movie you wanted them to. Nope, not even that one. Kyle is created the worst (best?) ever modern farming sim. Andrew wrote a script. Todd's main character has a lot of names and that's really all there is to remember about his answer. n today's episode, we'll be saving the quote unquote "films" created for viewing from your naugahyde couch -- in a countdown of the 10 most memorable MADE FOR TV MOVIES of the Gen X era. We very specifically used the word MEMORABLE for this countdown, not BEST, because 'good' can mean so many things when we're talking about TV Movies -- it could mean so bad it's good. It could mean so bad we'll never forget it and here we are 40 years later talking about it. From disco dancing and cheerleaders to nuclear war and incest, TV movies never failed to deliver the content we loved to talk about at school the next day.Follow the PCPS on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter & TikTokSupport PCPS on Patreon. Amanda runs the podcast and site Made For TV Mayhem and has done a large number of disc commentaries, most recently for the excellent TV Movie PRAY FOR THE WILDCATS. She has also lectured all around the world on the subject of TV movies. Her book "Are You In The House Alone: A TV Movie Compendium 1964-1999" is both an essential resource for fans of the form and a very entertaining read. Here, we talk about the origins of the TV Movie, the creative forces behind the best ones, and why they were an important outlet for some very talented women. We also take a moment to discuss the episodic television show CHARLIE'S ANGELS, since our History Of Television screening on that subject was so rudely canceled in light of the current crisis. Finally, Amanda offers some recommendations of Made For TV movies available on Amazon Prime for streaming. Here are Amanda's recommendations for streaming TV Movies, though you will find many more films for your watchlist mentioned in the discussion, so take notes as you listen.BORN INNOCENT (1974, D. "The first TV movies were also just as likely to be adapted from literature, short stories, and successful stage plays, as they were original works for TV. Many of the familiar writers, producers, directors, and actors from dramatic anthologies continued their careers into TV movies. Young actors on their way up in the industry as well as older actors looking to extend their careers turned to TV—and TV movies—as a way to work their craft. And, the best of the early TV movies continued to tell small, internal stories—with close-up shots of characters faces." In this 30-minute podcast, author Joanna Wilson explores the history of Christmas made-for-tv movies from the earliest dramatic anthologies, to what is arguably the first made-for-tv Christmas movie—1964's Carol for Another Christmas (written by Rod Serling)—through the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s to today's made-for-tv Christmas movies, which are numerous and spearheaded by Hallmark's prolific yearly output. Joanna Wilson is the author of Tis the Season TV: the Encyclopedia of Christmas-themed Episodes, Specials and Made-for-TV Movies. She has been researching AND writing about Christmas on TV for nearly 20 years. Wilson is finalizing the updated, 2nd edition of the encyclopedia which will come out next year in 2020. She is the author of Triple Dog Dare: Watching & Surviving the 24-Hour Marathon of A Christmas Story, The Christmas TV Companion, and Merry Musical Christmas: Vol. 1: The Best Musical Performances in Sitcoms and Dramas. Often maligned and disparaged, made-for-tv movies from the 1990s have gotten a bad reputation. The biggest critique is that they always portray women as victims. As a child of the 1990s (I was born in 1989), I grew up on these made-for-tv movies that usually aired on the Lifetime Network. As an adult, I wanted to revisit two of these films, in particular, and see what they had to offer. I share my analysis in this episode. While both films--"She Fought Alone" and "Lying Eyes"--have problematic aspects to them, I think they also contain some important messages about violence against women, rape culture, and toxic masculinity. I'm not just interested in how these films portray women but in how they portray men. These films make visible the violence against women in our society and they show the subtle and not-so-subtle ways in which men harm women. In the end, I argue for the value of looking at these made-for-tv movies in a complex and nuanced way. Consider making this podcast sustainable by supporting it on Patreon.
